Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

Had a mini-slump yesterday, and now that I'm past it, there's a mountain of tidying and laundry to tackle. Sorted my head out a little yesterday, got perspective back by composing a mammoth email, deleted the addressee and put it in drafts. That was surprisingly cathartic.

So for most of today I'll be in the kitchen and utility, so grateful to have this corner to come to.

foxessocks · 29/11/2020 08:04

Morning!
Really need to get dd doing her homework today, she was completely distracted by Christmas decorations yesterday (can't blame her for that!) She hasn't got loads to do but she picks a task from her list each weekend and obviously she has left the hardest to last which is what we are getting to now Hmm

flight plan
Sunday is renew your spirit day
No missions because it's the weekend but we will be moving into the living room zone and then the entrance, porch, dining room in the week ahead

Bye for now!

foxessocks · 29/11/2020 08:05

mrstidy glad the email writing was cathartic- I have heard that it helps to do that.

TheUpholder · 29/11/2020 08:41

Morning!

Well done for getting out of your slump Tidy

Love the tree Hazel! You’re doing looks lovely too Sherin.

Rest of yesterday’s ta Das:
⛄️ kitchen hoovered and mopped
⛄️ dehumidifier unpacked and positioned. Thankfully I read the instructions before I flicked the switch which said it had to be allowed to settle for 12 hours before turning on
⛄️ bits of financial stuff

DD did her Christmas list (5 items, 3 I’ve got, other 2 she seems to have forgotten about already phew!). Lots of Christmas films in the afternoon. Supermarket pizzas and winecollected by DH for tea.

Today:
⛄️ humans and cats fed
⛄️ DW set off
⛄️ dehumidifier on
⛄️ Washing hung up
⛄️ beef in slow cooker

Just remembered the slow cooker question. We tend to just use our for beef, pulled pork and ham these days.

Today’s plans:
🎯 bath DD (she has weetabix in her hair)
🎯 walk into town to order turkey as DH forgot, and check on DGM at her front door as she’s having problems with her phone.
🎯 living room, hall and dining room dusted and floors done
🎯 list of Christmas things left to get, and Christmas food list
🎯 prep potatoes, veg and Yorkshire pud batter ready for whenever DH is heading home. Hopefully lunchtime!

SingToTheSky · 29/11/2020 10:49

Morning all. I’m a bit bleary eyed having had a lie in, in the end - late to sleep, then I woke up from one of those nightmares that you then go back into when you fall asleep again?! On the plus side, if I was a decent writer I could totally turn it into a dystopian teen fiction bestseller Hmm

Plans for today: be lazy and unmotivated.

Although I am currently enjoying preparing for the December thread!

foxessocks · 29/11/2020 11:35

up I've got beef in my slow cooker today ☺️

Ta das so far today
Finished decluttering and tidying dd bedroom
Finished tidying ds bedroom
Asked nursery school if they wanted some toys that the dc don't want anymore - they do so I need to get that all bagged up for school run tomorrow
Beef in slow cooker
Helped dd with her homework
Washing hung up
Dishwasher on
Dh has cleaned the guttering and is getting ready to do the outside Christmas lights , my favourite part of our decorations!

Just nipped in quickly.
Very shiny Woolly🥇 we’re having pork too which is why I am nipping in quickly I need to go and put it on. Apple and mincemeat tart too.
Builder says he is coming today he can’t keep up with the work bless him. He never advertises. Joiner sent me another joiner whose wife is due first baby in two days time. Not sure about that. Oh have to go.

HillsBesideTheSea · 29/11/2020 14:30

I have lost my to do list. I have no idea what i was supposed to be doing and I have no brain to figure it out.

Hot chocolate and Marshmallows in the Naughty corner anyone?

HazelNuttyElf · 29/11/2020 16:36

bower I hope you haven't had any more dizzy spells. Remind me what you are having done to your house, I have a terrible memory - I'm sure you've already mentioned it, sorry 😞
tidy getting things out of your head like that really can help. Hopefully you can find some healing now.
zoo it really does sound like you need an adjustment done (or two!) It really does make the world of a difference if you can get in.
Sing I hope you do manage to get rest today. It sounds like you need it. How is your DH with his meds now?
Sherin it is now time for us to watch very Christmassy movies, like Elf (which we love in this house). Even though I have watched some movies that were the romantic kind that just happen to be at Christmas time. I figured I should wait until after Thanksgiving for the Santa ones!
foxes I love outside lights, although sometimes they are hard work to get up and down. I caved and got the projector, which does the job, kind of. But I do like to have our snowflake lights hanging too. I'm not sure if I can talk DH into putting them up this year though.
glittery that is a very shiny sink!
hills it seems you are supposed to rest today, especially if you can't remember what it is you're supposed to be doing. If it is important though, I hope you remember soon.

HazelNuttyElf · 29/11/2020 16:54

I do have to work today so not much flying will be done. Although I did clean the bathroom yesterday after my shift. ILs came over last night for dinner (leftovers!) We played Skip-Bo after we ate.
DS is currently at ILs house right now, helping MIL decorate for Christmas as well as SIL.
I do need to get an order for grocery pickup put in, I just have no idea what to get yet. We have lots of ham left so will plan to use that up too.
I'm currently drinking my 2nd cup of coffee (it's almost 10am already).
🍒👋 to everyone. I'll also add some pumpkin pie and freshly whipped cream to the naughty corner, it actually turned out the best I've ever made!

Sherin18 · 29/11/2020 18:05

Hi all, had a busy day today. I decided to put all the decorations up, so got them out of the loft, I also found DD’s old high chair which is great because I won’t have to buy a new one. My living room turned into an absolute bomb site (I’ve attached the picture) and then we settled down and wrote DD’s list (also attached a picture). We printed off some pictures of what she wants and stuck them down, and DD drew her own little picture (the red scribble). I ordered her presents, and then panicked that maybe the baby will come before Christmas so ordered a couple of bits that I could wrap up just incase. We’ve settled down now watching CBeebies. Im trying to make a plan of things to do for the week, I don’t work at the minute and DD doesn’t go to nursery so I find some days we just end up sitting in front of the Tv doing nothing. We can’t go out much because of being in tier 2, but I’m going to look up some activities to do. If you have any ideas for activities to do with an almost 3 year old please let me know!.

Your tree looks really lovely hazel

Well done on getting over your slump tidy

Thank you up! It sounds like your afternoon was lovely yesterday.

Sorry about the nightmare sing they’re awful.

Thank you wooly! I love the shiny sink.

foxes I need to do some outside lights. They’re not really outside as we live above a shop but I put some twinkly lights in the windows. You reminded me I forgot them!.

hazel I love a good Christmas film. There’s still loads DD hasn’t watched so I’ll introduce her to some classics over the next few weeks.

I will be back later as I think I may actually have a ta da list!

Paper snowflakes, cottonball snowmen, toilet roll santas, paper chains

I have an osbourne book somewhere but I think it might be in the christmas box. Will look later when I go into the loft. But those are the ones that I can remember off the top of my head.

merryhouse · 29/11/2020 18:11

I have made pudding and cake and bought a turkey.

We missed the c&c and delivery slots so couldn't order a Posh Fresh turkey, so I picked up a Norfolk Bronze from the freezer section. Standard price £22, Clubcard price £16.50 so with the 10% off Big Shop we've got a 4.4kg turkey for under £15.

I forgot to check the Vitamin D stocks but we've got enough to last till the next big shop. Unfortunately I also forgot to check baked beans and we have one less tin than Saturdays. Ho hum.

I don't like peel or fruit in my Christmas cake either, so I just leave them out. Doesn't seem to affect the finished product! Fruit definitely didn't sink this year: the top is all rough and bobbly. I turn it upside down but might trim bits as well.

Steamed puddings in the pressure cooker as usual, having to depressurise and add more water half way through as usual. Fairly sure it's not the gasket's fault: I think it's never really worked properly from new because I'm convinced the "weight" thingy doesn't sit properly on its mounting. One day I'll order a new mount and see.

S1 tried to arrive on his due date, but I got stuck at 5cm for hours - ended up on a syntocinon drip. Same thing happened with S2 but manual water-breaking did the trick. He was two days over as he had considerately waited till Saturday Grin

Cute toddler over the road is called Ethan.

Two zoom parties in two days - old university friends on Thursday, neighbours on Friday. Drank (between two) one bottle of supermarket mulled wine and one bottle of home-mulled - H said he didn't notice much difference and in fact hadn't realised we'd finished them both! Surprisingly consequence-free on Saturday Grin. Got through a pile of mince pies too, though there were still some left for Strictly.

Today I've lemon-rinsed and hung up the washing I forgot yesterday Blush and gone into the loft to fetch the Advent Ring stuff. Having to use two of the candles that warped one hot summer a few years ago, so that might be interesting.

S1 has managed to get a train ticket for the evening of Christmas Eve, getting in at 10:23. Trying to decide whether we should have our traditional Christmas Eve Tea at teatime or leave it, either till 11pm(!) or to some other point. Maybe New Year's Eve? Suppose it depends what he'll have eaten before he arrives, and whether we'll want to have Christmas breakfast as well. Perhaps we could eat at 11pm, then have salmon and croissants at 11am and dinner at 4ish?

merryhouse · 29/11/2020 18:13

Gah! I mean I don't like peel or nuts in my Christmas cake!

Wouldn't be much of a fruitcake without fruit...

MrsTidyHouse · 29/11/2020 18:41

Clean clothes are in wardrobes, dishes washed.

This morning, I got the legs off DS's old bed with some difficulty, and put them in the sorting room. The bed base is still upstairs; I'm not sure that I'll be able to move it downstairs, but I really want that room completely emptied for decoration. And some of the furniture is surplus to requirements. I've put loads of shake'n'vac on the carpet, and will hoover it tomorrow.

Completed tomorrow's supermarket order. There's also more laundry to pile up for tomorrow.

Stilllivinginazoo · 29/11/2020 18:45

sherin dltk
Activity village
Both offer loads craft/activities for kids of all ages and are broken down into seasons, holidays etc.they were my go to helpers in keeping zoolets entertained when we were home and needed something else to do!

Stilllivinginazoo · 29/11/2020 18:46

I should've added Google before the names

SingToTheSky · 29/11/2020 20:47

Well today was mostly a bust, didn’t leave the house or get any housework done, and although I did finally get some studying done I found it quite sad (it was about all the support processes such as EHCPs and TAFs and given we are now entirely without any of that it was somewhat uncomfortable reading :().

However a lovely dinner courtesy of DH (halloumi fries and creamy mushroom pork) followed by baking with DD1 has cheered me back up. Because LOOK WE MADE A CAKE AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED!!! It’s pretty yummy, I think if I made it again I’d reduce the syrupy bit you do before putting the fruit on because it was a bit too sweet, but YAY! Those who have been on the thread a while will know this is a big deal as I have complained MANY times about my non-existent baking skills. Gradually I am getting more confidence!

Fledglings assemble for the nurturing November thread!
HillsBesideTheSea · 29/11/2020 22:10

I have just completely reorganised my internet bookmarks so they are more logical. This is an ultimate form of procrastination and now I really do have to go get the school uniform washed for tomo.

HillsBesideTheSea · 29/11/2020 22:10

Pointy stick please!

ExpensivelyDecorated · 29/11/2020 22:45

. Hopefully your rearranged bookmarks will save time in the long run Hills.

Sing - well done on the cake! Was it from the Be-Ro book? We do it sometimes with tinned pears rather than pineapple, a real favourite.

Sherin - my DC2 was also due early Jan but came along a week late, which was actually nice in the long term as her birthday isn't in the immediate days after NY when it's hard work organising parties etc.

Zoo your shoulder problems sound very much like mine. I do stretches a lot, I keep experimenting to see what helps, the ones that seem to help the most all have the arm extended out to the side. Either the door frame one or lying on my back on the bed with the arm straight out to the side, palm facing up, then gradually inch the arm upwards wing style (still flat on the bed). But take great care as obviously this is unqualified advice.

I have had a quiet weekend really. Picked up click and collect shopping today with some for a neighbour who has had to self isolate with her entire family. Then went for a walk with another friend. Spent most of the afternoon doing major updates on a computer and sorting out a big backlog of photos that needed backing up and organising into a book. I like doing it but it takes a lot of time, I take hundreds of photos. Then Strictly, phoned my mum, sorted some laundry and heading for bed now.

SingToTheSky · 29/11/2020 23:32

Oooh ED it actually wasn’t, before I got the be-ro I’d ordered a couple from the library and promised to make this a couple of weeks ago. OMG though I looove tinned (autocorrect changed that to tim nerd!) pear - will definitely try that thank you!

The evening has continued to improve - got a bit more studying done (and realised my unit one deadline is sooner than I’d realised but I’m still on track to meet it), I’ve printed out the weekly list for DS and feel so much more relaxed about the week ahead knowing that he now has much more of the responsibility to get through it.

I also laminated some Italian word cards I made and am just taking a break from cutting them out 🤣 building sentences with them is on DS’ list.

SingToTheSky · 30/11/2020 00:01

Sherin I love the Xmas list! Your DD’s name is gorgeous too 🥰 great idea to get some presents for baby just in case.

Top class productive procrastination there hills! Digital decluttering is worth it.

Thank you hazel they aren’t knocking him out since the first couple of days thankfully. On the other hand they’re making fuck all difference to the pain levels. 🤦‍♀️ I think he has to increase the amitriptyline yet again but hopefully the MRI results will be back soon and give some more options.

Right, I have cut out 63 colour coded Italian words. Clocking off for the day. 🍒👋
