Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

Happy Turkey Day to our American Fledglings.

Alive. Avoided a&e so far. Feel like utter crap. But SOP for this emergency situation worked so far. And found the offending ingredient is in one of the brands of pain killers that I take. Which explains a fair bit. Thank fully it is not in another brand so taken that one this morning.

Sorry running late.

Dancingtomusic · 26/11/2020 09:03

🤦‍♀️ just lost a really long post. 🤦‍♀️
Here is the short version...

Woolly - would love to see your Christmas dress please🎄🎄. Aww thank you for sharing your recipe, i will share my naan recipe too.

Hazel- Happy Thanksgiving

Tinselette and Sherin- hope your Dc feel better soon.

Dancingtomusic · 26/11/2020 09:04

Hills- glad you are Alive

ExpensivelyDecorated · 26/11/2020 09:18

Hills - glad you are still at home, hope you feel better soon.

Woolly - I virtually never wear tights (jeans and leggings wearer) but a friend posted earlier in the year about the Save Snag Tights offer, so I have got a voucher for a couple of pairs in my inbox. The problem being that I don't really have any winter dresses or skirts, or shoes (I live in ankle boots and trainers). So not quite sure what I will do when I redeem the voucher.

Sherin - hope little one feels better soon. We struggled a bit choosing a name for DC2.

Sorry to everyone who has got complicated families and Christmas prospects. We are thinking we might split with me going to see my parents and DH going to his Dad's, no staying over. His late mum's birthday falls within the 5 day period and we usually all get together but we are 4 households and although I think we'll be tier 2 I think they will be tier 3. Wish they'd get on and announce it.

Right, I have got a lot to do today. House is a mess. Need to go to PO.

SingToTheSky · 26/11/2020 09:39

Yay for a&e avoidance!

I need the pointy stick and fast. I would very much like to stay in bed all day/week/year. I don’t feel sad, just MEH 😑

It may even be a power of one day rather than being so ambitious as to list three whole things 😂

Stilllivinginazoo · 26/11/2020 09:59

Hills glad you still with us!
Woolly yes to seeing the dress
Ed standing joke in these parts I have legs when very occasionally wear anything that makes them visible.i live in jeans and joggers and maxi dresses in summer(unless super hot then dig out denim shorts that come to my knees)

SingToTheSky · 26/11/2020 10:08

Already had panicked text from DD1 that she’s lost one of the fivers her friends gave her (I’m ordering the group gift for their friend’s birthday and said I wouldn’t do it until she had all the money 😬). There’s always something. 🤦‍♀️

Reminds me of Blockbusters sing!

Useful podcast from psychologist Rick Hanson on disappointment around Holidays, Christmas etc this year. open.spotify.com/episode/0qivR5k1BlWdFhv9HpPJ9S?si=3QDO7dEyRSuoTfalgC55MA

ExpensivelyDecorated · 26/11/2020 12:27

Thanks Tinselette - I'll have a listen later. Well, tier2 for us and my immediate family, tier 3 for the whole of DH's family. Tier 3 for virtually all my extended family too. This is going to be a long winter but we will come through, one step at a time.

Tinselette · 26/11/2020 12:30

I really like him and find him very calming.

Bowerbird5 · 26/11/2020 12:37

Late to sleep but slept well.

In boudoir. Stripped bed, dusted top of bedside drawers.
DH is doing jigsaw. We did a bit together and I might of mentioned (a couple of times) must get on and do some jobs. Going to do window sill and two chest of drawers.
Going for a litter pick walk with DH then ironing. Oh joy!

Bowerbird5 · 26/11/2020 12:43

Hills glad you are alive and almost well.

I will have a listen later Tinselette

Just listen to You and Yours about Dolphin who advertised property projects in 🇩🇪 Germany. Lots of British people have invested pensions and savings in it. I can’t believe people put so much money into these scams. A guy on now is owed 1.4m😳

It is unbelievable.

foxessocks · 26/11/2020 12:43

We are tier 3 which isn't a huge surprise.

Despite the gloomy news today I am feeling better than yesterday!! I think my mind is occupied with work today so not dwelling on stuff like yesterday.

OP posts:
SingToTheSky · 26/11/2020 12:58

Tier two for us apparently. Same for my parents. That means I can’t see them doesn’t it?

SingToTheSky · 26/11/2020 13:30

Random question prompted by seeing a thread about Christmas bedding...

Where is good to buy (affordable) cushions, and in particular, standard size for covers?! We don’t actually have any cushions and it would be a nice way to make the living room a bit cosier. I was thinking if I bought a standard size cushion with removable covers, I could then get Christmassy covers too for the winter. I can’t justify the space for actual cushions 11 months of the year but swapping covers would be nice! Sadly I’m not a crafty person so making my own isn’t a sensible option 😂 any recommendations please? :)

HillsBesideTheSea · 26/11/2020 17:03

I would say Ikea normally sing not sure in this covid world any more tbh

Only another 3-4hrs before the slow release should in theory have finished releasing. I think perhaps maybe. Not flying. Will throw food at people and crawl into bed.

SingToTheSky · 26/11/2020 17:09

Yeah. Mind you we are still waiting to see what happens with our current Ikea order 🙁

Watching masterchef with DH at the moment while trying to keep the 3yo awake!

foxessocks · 26/11/2020 19:28

sing not sure about tier 2 but in tier 3 we can meet in groups of up to six outside in a public space i.e. countryside or park ...
Also we have heard today the kids swimming lessons are back on even in tier 3, I think under 18s sports are back on in all tiers?

Sorry I've not been around much this week, today was another full on day.

I do have another meal planning ideas one though for you all, tonight we I did sausages in the slow cooker with beans and veg, I've been using my slow cooker more recently as I can put something in there in the morning so when I'm working late it doesn't matter if dh doesn't get home in time to cook. So I wondered if you all had any good slow cooker recipes or things you do in yours that I maybe haven't thought of?
The sausage one was just sausages chopped up, a bit of tomato puree, a tin of baked beans, some vegetable stock, potatoes, onion and I also put some parsnips and celeriac in. Served it with garlic bread. And the good thing was both the children loved it too!
Other things I do quite often are Bolognese which is delicious slow cooked and chicken thighs in a tomato based sauce sometimes with chorizo as well. I did a bean chilli in there the other day but I didn't like it, it all kind of went mushy...

I'll be back later with links, ds is calling out 🙄

OP posts:
foxessocks · 26/11/2020 19:29

sing obviously I'm assuming tier 2 you can also meet people outside!

OP posts:
foxessocks · 26/11/2020 19:31

Sorry if I'm repeating myself with the recipes by the way 😂

OP posts:
SingToTheSky · 26/11/2020 19:57

Yeah can meet outdoors but I would need to stay there rather than just meeting them due to distance sadly.

Am hugely relieved the gym will be open again.

ta da
💥brief stint on exercise bike

Errrr not sure what else. Fuck all, I think.
