Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

sing we often agree to these things as she's already in a spin,in hope she will come down a few notches and be able to do X,y,z...

SingToTheSky · 22/11/2020 20:25

Ah I see. Is there stuff she could do in her less panicky times, like on a regular basis? Sweeping, hoovering, washing up etc?
Tbh one of the reasons I get mine doing more chores now is so they have less time on screens 😳😂 but it’s good for them long term too.

I am very unmotivated still. In one of those endless scrolling moods myself actually. DD1 is currently giving Cagletini a bath 🥰 not hair washing though I’m not sure that would be a wise idea 😂

I should do some reading. I haven’t remotely prepared for tomorrow though.

Not really Up people offering to help and then not doing anything has not helped the mood. People requesting things to be made and then saying but can't you when they were handed the recipe book did not help my mood. Children bringing school uniform out for washing AFTER the laundry has been done was only saved by the fact I had a specials load of trouser that it could get thrown in with. Boxes falling out of the loft and shattering not great neither. Some days are just those kinda days. Just going to chalk it up to the grumps and hope that tomo is better.

If not there is always coffee and the raisin bread that i made today.

HillsBesideTheSea · 22/11/2020 21:05

ON a plus note some things did get done and I found the sewing machine power cable so that is a massive plus!

Mc3209 · 22/11/2020 22:30

Oh Hills that sounds tedious. Let's hope the positives mark the turning point for the better.
Woolly those Christmasks are fabulous! The one with a sausage dog is my favourite 😊
Sing it's the weekend, well allowed to be unmotivated.

I am feeling pretty much back to my pre-pregnancy self (not counting the spare weight 🙈). Feels so good not to be pregnant! Even though I did enjoy it in a way. Can't believe DS is 1 month old tomorrow.

Ta da:
🎉 Kitchen deep cleaned, including clearing the fridge from ancient leftovers, and cleaning inside the microwave.
🎉 Upstairs, stairs, and downstairs hoovered
🎉DH cleaned the bathroom
🎉Utility room cleaned
🎉LOLx2 - washed, dried, and folded.
🎉Aquarium maintenance X3
🎉Bedroom dusted and surfaces cleaned
🎉Beds stripped and made
🎉Small room cleaned
🎉 Christmas decorations up! I love festive mood. I am pretty much done with Christmas shopping too, just few small bits left like stocking stuffers and the likes, and cards still left to do.

I felt like I needed to do a thorough house clean to reset the lack of flying over the past month. Now I feel I am back on track. Now collapsing into the bed.
🍒👋 to everyone!

SingToTheSky · 22/11/2020 22:39

Amazing masks!!!

I have barely moved since my last post 😳 but I have finally decided a couple of Christmas things.

I am finding it tricky to decide for DH’s older DCs though - they are young adults and have all flown their various nests during the pandemic (DSS and his GF moved out of her parents’, and DSDs found a flat together). Along with everything else going on it partly seems right to be even more sure that presents will be used and not frivolous etc but also don’t want to be really boring/overly practical!

Bowerbird5 · 22/11/2020 22:52

Love the Chrismaskss Woolly were they ? Quilting sizes or larger pieces to start with?

Tonight made chicken breast with those Japanese breadcrumbs that someone made something that sounded yummy and everyone wanted the recipe. There was a recipe on the back of the pack so I made that. I put half the water in the sauce as it seemed too much and I might have misread tblsp for tsp on the soy sauce. The sauce was lovely. The chicken was yummy and I lazily used Tilda rice. We had mushrooms as a side serving. Panko was that the name? If you were the fledgling that put the recipe up I want to try yours now we’ll did intend to but I started too late to go rummaging. Was it Oct or September? I know it had garlic in it. Are there different breadcrumbs as just one type on shelf? Anyway thank you DH really enjoyed it and so did I and it was filling. I have some for tomorrow whereas DH scoffed all his.

Not much flying as it is Sunday

Made bed.
Washed up.
Cleaned out chickens.
Fed chickens.
Looked up Lakeland sale a few bargains and money off some planned presents. Loo brush about £15 new design not regular loo brush. I might get one as toilet duck ‘wet wipes’ are hard to find.
Made list.
Made tonight’s meal and tomorrow’s.
I sorted a fewbits too.
Washed up and loaded dishwasher with the rest.
Wiped work tops.

Going to read my book for a bit.

Kirsty’s homemade Christmas is on again. I like seeing all the crafts and cooking. Those puddings looked yummy today.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 22/11/2020 23:13

Evening all,

I woke up at 5 for about an hour but did manage to snooze again till about 8 which was nice, DH brought me a cup of tea. Them off to Sainsburys for click and collect plus pick up a few extra things in store and home to unload it. Found something was missing so had to phone helpline for a refund, they were polite and efficient.

DD swept leaves in the garden and pressure washed the path. Then we spent an hour or so going over one of his school assignments. DH and I went to a local garden centre to buy more fairylights, it was nice. Then a roast dinner, Strictly and a quickly made pineapple upside down cake.

Mustard - I do keep powder in, but don't use it often, mainly in salad dressings. I live the little tins and save them. I have a jar of English mustard for ham sandwiches, roast pork, sausages and burgers. I use Dijon a lot too, always put a heaped teaspoon in cheese sauce. Also, for cheese on toast - grate the cheese finely, add a teaspoon of dijon mustard and just enough milk to hold it all together. Toast one side of the bread, turn it over, spread the mix on and grill till bubbling. I did it yesterday with Red Leicester and it was delicious. You can put the same mix over a chicken breast and bake, best done in small dishes as it does run off a bit.

SingToTheSky · 23/11/2020 00:19

Ooh totally trying that for cheese on toast!

I can’t be bothered to go to bed. This is not a good sign 🙄🤔 I’ll try and leave the house tomorrow. Promise. 😳

FlushiTheSnowman · 23/11/2020 00:45

Hiya! Hope everyone’s well, sorry I haven’t been on much today. We’ve had a bit of a lazy day, we watched nativity and I cried. Kids are in bed now and I’m getting ready for tomorrow and the week beginning. No actual housework has been done other than the washing up, wiping surfaces etc so I won’t bother to post a list. Right, I should get off to bed now. Goodnight everyone.

Thank you zoo he’s gorgeous, I love my cats. You’ve got loads done today, I’m really in awe of your lists. I hope DD is feeling a bit better.

I’m sorry you didn’t get much sleep THAT!

Aww I hope he enjoys it freaky, it sounds like he’s really appreciative of it!

Your day yesterday sounds lovely up

glittery thank you! I love a good Christmas cushion, I hope you can bring yours back to life. I love the masks they’re fab.

bower ooh I love banana cake. We have Christmas jigsaws here, then send them over to my mom who frames them they looks lovely.

sing well done on starting the course, good luck to you with the rest of it!

That’s does sound really tedious hills

I’m glad you’re feeling back to your old self mc and happy 1 month birthday to your DS for tomorrow.

HauntingHazel · 23/11/2020 04:08

mc a month old already?! Time flies! Well done for getting back to pre-pregnancy weight.
Well done to those of you who have got outside Christmas lights put up already. We are putting our tree up on Friday, not sure what else though. I do put Fairy lights up throughout the house (other than the bedrooms and bathroom).

Today I was busy at ILs house:
🦃 Turned oven on to self clean for a couple of hours
🍁 Dusted dining room and living room
🦃 Vacuumed entryway, dining room and living room
🍁 Rearranged furniture in dining room ready for Thanksgiving
🦃 Put Thanksgiving decor out
🍁 Finished cleaning oven

When I got home (after 5:30pm) I was shattered and feel asleep on the couch for an hour. Then had to get up and start on dinner. DD and DH helped cook and DH and DS helped me clean up the kitchen afterwards. Rotated DW and wiped countertops down. I'm currently on the couch again.

🍒👋 everyone. Sorry for lack of more personals, I'm having a hard time focusing on who said what.

Stilllivinginazoo · 23/11/2020 06:03

foxessocks · 23/11/2020 06:58

bower was it this recipe? www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/crunchy-garlic-chicken if so that was me!
I think panko breadcrumbs are made from crustless white bread, possibly that you cook first to make crispier??! I'm not really sure. I usually just use normal breadcrumbs that I blitz up myself using old crusts we don't want 😂

Back with links in a minute I really need to get in the shower!

Morning lovelies Brew🥐🥞🧇☕🧃

Up at 6ish with dc5 shortly followed by dc4. Just dragged dc1 and 2 from pits. Dc3 doesnt need to be up yet.

I have some uni work i need to do today. Sad

HillsBesideTheSea · 23/11/2020 08:10

Morning that

I set the coffee machine to wake me with a gentle start at 7am. Only i forgot to check whether the clock was on BST or GMT so duely at 6am the coffee machine made me coffee. At least I had had chance to wake slowly before teen dropped the bombshell that his only pair of trousers were still in the washing machine and not on radiator as he was told to do. Hopefully they survive the tumble dryer. But as they are do not tumble dry that could be an interesting one.

There is a grown up up and fretting this morning. I am staying away from the blunt spoons because my temper is short and I really on the best of days can not be dealing with pointless fretting. Get a fucking grip dude How he has a high stress position he does well at I will never know.

Good mornings to all of you. A fly in fly out kinda day. I keep promising that I will keep up with the thread, and then fail miserably. Sorry.

Mc3209 · 23/11/2020 08:16

Morning everyone!
Hazel I wish I was back at pre pregnancy weight. I got my energy levels back and I can breath easily again, and not get out of breath when walking uphill. Woo hoo! I am feeling so much better, but I still have 14 kg to lose. I am calorie counting and walking with the pram for exercise. Will start more intense exercise in about 2 weeks. I am very skeptical that my post pregnancy pouch will go back to its original shape...
That may the day bring you plenty of energy. Sending plenty of coffee your way! ☕☕☕
Zoo impressive list as always, especially for this time of the morning!

Mc3209 · 23/11/2020 08:20

Cross post Hills. Well, it's a consequence for their actions lessons for the teen. They will have to make a do with 3/4 length trousers then, if they couldn't take them out to dry yesterday!

HillsBesideTheSea · 23/11/2020 08:26

And the other adult is up fretting about an online shopping order that contains a substitution (one we can use)

Send coffee and patience?
Tia

Bowerbird5 · 23/11/2020 09:07

Thanks Foxes that sound like it. Try the recipe on the box if you like Chinese type sauce I put less water in as it sounded a lot. We liked the result which was a thicker sauce.

Sing don’t know how much you want to spend but Lakeland have some Cottage Delight gifts in their sale. Food often goes down well I find.

Hills might have had to say that Kevan the teenager expression and voice... “ Am I bothered?” Hope the day improves.

That how you get some time today...nap time maybe...for uni work.

MC. A month already 😳 it takes longer with SC to lose it as major op.

Stilllivinginazoo · 23/11/2020 09:21

hills I'm afraid patience and sanity ran out loooong before the loo rolls did in shops and stock levels have not returned

Oh go for the blunt spoon approach with CAMHS. They are the worst. We'll start a bail fund and failure of care and safe guarding by actually causing harm on the part of CAMHS i have strong feelings about camhs they aint pretty and will probably shock the doc on wed
