Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

that like your ta da emojis. Keep on keeping on. Be good to yourself. Ditto you zoo

Flushii thank you - often to finish second coat of walls today. Went with a white lampshade in the end but it looks interesting as has two layers. Was worried about the navy darkening the room when on. I do ache after all the painting yesterday. I may need to stretch before starting today. God bless ds - he's so grateful and excited.

FreakyForestier · 22/11/2020 07:33

Sorry off not often. Feels like often. Yay to pulled pork sing. I have a little tree like bush in my garden that I put Christmas lights on ed so I do like yours. No flying being done here as stuff everywhere!

foxessocks · 22/11/2020 08:23

Gah, I've just lost a whole post Angry

Anyway I'll just leave the links here and come back later and try again!!

Totally devoid of motivation today. Bah. Don’t even want the pointy stick.

TheUpholder · 22/11/2020 10:40

Glad the pork worked Sing

Lovely lights ED

Also really need to paint Zoo. I don’t have the excuse of sore joints. I just can’t face the mess, and I hate painting.

Yesterday I achieved nothing else really (still haven’t done the returns Blush). However, we went to bed with the house tidy, having had a healthy dinner and a lovely afternoon of Xmas films and playing.

Ta da:
✅ breakfast, dishes
✅ beds made
✅ s & s upstairs
✅ wiped extractor fan panel things with elbow grease ready for DH to attempt to fix it
✅ both of us showered and dressed
✅ LOL
✅ sausages out of freezer for tea

To do:
⬆️ home bleurgh (today and tomorrow)
⬆️ Make soup for lunch
⬆️ ironing
⬆️ SORT PARCELS
⬆️ do some planning for the week
⬆️ check last week and the coming weeks missions to see if there’s any I fancy doingunlikely

KCC - any takeaway will do here. We are in a small town but it’s a tourist place so there are lots of takeaways and restaurants. My favourite is probably an Indian, but we are a couple of minutes from a chippy. Lots of the restaurants near us are doing takeaway during lockdown and we are trying to resist!

Ooh yes Sing I meant to suggest mustard powder too. We just put a teaspoon of that in our pulled pork.

Bowerbird5 · 22/11/2020 11:04

😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣
The boudoir.
You should see mine. I can barely move. Last time I felt I was getting somewhere. Ahhh! Runs away screaming.

KCC we have a couple of takeaways about five mile away but not very good. One of the Chinese takeaways used to be good but the owner is now in Birmingham and it has gone downhill since her niece left after finishing her Masters in Economics. A shame as they were both lovely. Make the best Lemon Chicken and also Singapore noodles but the rest isn’t so good. DH has found another which is in a rough area but we have had food twice and it is good. You just need to be alert. Wallets, handbag, purse and the Spar has been robbed a couple of times last time by knife point.
We had fish and chips on Friday. We don’t often have a takeaway because of distance a lot would be cold by the time we get home. They use boxes at the Fish shop.we ordered two haddock and one chips. I still could eat all the fish so had the rest at lunch. It was delicious.
There is a good Gurkha takeaway in the city. Pizza is no good so we sometimes buy supermarket frozen ones.

That sorry you are having a difficult time.

Freaky great work. I need to paint our dining? Dumping room before Christmas.

Sing I know how you feel. Pointy stick needed here but not yet. Sounds like the shoe racks we used to have. Stained and stacked by back door. There was one in outside loo but I think DH might have used it for kindling which is annoying because I kept loo rolls on it and some toilet cleaner.

Zoo arrgh to forgetting shopping. At least you had to go out again and not just for that. I am trying to keep a running list. Need to get organised and have one to look at with regular stuff .

Sorry now have forgotten the rest oh Hazel hope you get your meal cooked. I forgot to take mince out. It will need to be main meal tonight.

Not much flying yesterday.
LOL x2
Wiped down kitchen several times.
Baked made egg man a cake as he gave us lots of apples. Made banana cake as bananas going black. Have I already written this I think I have sorry. DH found Christmas jigsaws so wiped and sorted those into order.

Washed up x3
Made bed
Went into room of doom. Arrrggghhhhh!
Builder didn’t turn up yesterday and not here yet. 🙄

Right need to get cracking.

foxessocks · 22/11/2020 12:33

I feel the same about my bedroom bower it's always cluttered and a mess, can never seem to get it looking how I want it! So I end up ignoring it 😄 I must try better this week!

I can't believe it's already lunchtime, haven't achieved much at all...
Ta das
Dishwasher on
Washing on
Dh popped to shop for a few bits
Dh dusted downstairs
I made some vegetable soup
Helped dd with her maths homework and heard her read
Watered all the house plants (because I noticed one was really wilting Blush

Time to make lunch I think. This afternoon I might make some more soup as the first batch will probably be gone at lunchtime, I didn't make enough 🙄. Also would like to make some cakes or something, thought about doing mince pies but not sure I feel like making pastry today, I prefer cake baking tbh! We'll see. Also some housework would be good, everything is looking very untidy 🤦‍♀️

Thanks for all the KCC comments, some delicious sounding takeaways!

HillsBesideTheSea · 22/11/2020 13:39

Sing if you want mustard like the enlgish mustard you can get gluten freee varieties in a number of the free from ranges. However it has a shorter life span then the powder so be aware of that when chosing

I have the mega grumps today. Blush,

Stilllivinginazoo · 22/11/2020 13:44

kcc we don't eat takeout as lil zoo gut doesn't cope higher fat levels and no one particularly likes it,incl MC d,KFC etcBlush

Tada
*Wash on
*Cats fed
*Harpic lav
*Bag up recycling that's empty itself all over front path/path of street(only couple bits outside gate) before neighbours start moaning
*Sweep mud from under shoe rack
*Tidy under dining table

Lil zoo fancies brekkieand typically what we didn't have so muffins trail heron foods to acquire itpop in Waitrose whilst there for d.f yogurt>cold but sunny,I'd hoped bit fresh air and gentle walk might help loosen my joints

Stilllivinginazoo · 22/11/2020 13:46

*muggins,notuffins!

SingToTheSky · 22/11/2020 15:03

Thanks for the mustard advice! I’ll bear that in mind. It’s one of those things we barely use but in trying to cook a more varied menu we are trying to build up the store cupboard of that sort of stuff. I must get a pack of sticky labels and keep it in the kitchen with a sharpie rather than scrabbling around for a biro to scribble the date on a tiny space on the jar 😂

We watched two episodes of bake off today but still have this week’s to watch before the final on Tuesday so if anyone else is watching, no spoilers please 🥺😂

I have done absolutely fuck all today except a brief stint on the exercise bike and booking some tesco deliveries for after Christmas. Now the others are home I should make a start on my new course though! That would be a far better use of my time than lazing on the sofa while the others watch Spider-Man

SingToTheSky · 22/11/2020 15:04

Any thoughts on what else to use English mustard for would be appreciated 😂 I don’t really like mustard in its own right and usually use the grainy one in salad dressings.

I do the same, put mustard powder in cheese sauce, also cheese scones and cheese straws, it brings out the cheesiness!! It keeps ages too.

I don't like mustard so we never buy a jar of it (dh likes it but isn't really bothered, not his favourite!)

OP posts:
foxessocks · 22/11/2020 16:19

Ta das
Tidied kitchen, wiped all the sides down
Tidied living room, took most of the toys upstairs
Tidied our bedroom, put all the dumped clothes away
Put all the washing away
Another LOL
Dishwasher on again
Made chocolate cookies (kids chose them over mince pies , dh wasn't happy though although I notice he has already scoffed a cookie)
Dh has hoovered upstairs and made ds bed up
Dh has put 2 X doors on today and moved all our towels etc into the new cupboard, he is exhausted!

Going to start dinner in a minute, chorizo and broccoli pasta bake tonight.

Can't believe it's Monday again tomorrow, where is the time going Confused

sing exercise bike on a Sunday is above and beyond as far as I'm concerned Grin

OP posts:
Stilllivinginazoo · 22/11/2020 16:44

sing I agree with foxes re exercise bike!add mustard powder to cheesy sauces(Mac n cheese/cauliflower/broc cheese/pasta bakes),savoury scones and breads.i guess would work in savoury muffins too.i only buy powder as keeps ages and we not a "table condiment" family(nothing is really.ds hates ketchup with a passion, lil zoo not bothered and it causes reflux dd2 n I,brown sauce isn't anymore popular and D's hates vinegar too)

Well I ended up trailing dd2 half hour over nature reserve in exchange would have help me in n out bath so I can shower/wash hair and put bins in big bin for tom.we get back n she has massive panic attack once I in shower so bins still not done n I don't want to now I'm.clean n in my snaffly pjsSad
I have ,however washed my "best bedding" in rose wonderland Mrs hinch limited edition bold and used matching lenor.it smells lovely fresh from drier(not too strong, soft rose smell)
I see boudoir is on cards for this week,so I may post a pic of my snaffly bed after I've tidy up the bombsite around it a bitBlush

Feeling bit fed up and couldn't used energy spent on walk to do chores and sort bins myself.oh well...must ring doc tom(little chance get thru on a Monday, but heyho) and see if camhs did add the possibility of anxiety calmer to dd2 AD script

Flops in naughty corner with bags ransoms and BOURNVILLE CHOCOLATE FINGERS(VEGAN) I GOT AT HERON FOODS FOR £1.i hear sainsbo and Tesco have them too.at last cadbury fingers lil zoo and I can have

HillsBesideTheSea · 22/11/2020 17:29

Apparently pens and stationery are like bobby pins and hair bobbles... HmmConfused

SingToTheSky · 22/11/2020 17:32

Aww I’m glad you found the bournville fingers!

Would the cheese sauce thing work with actual mustard? Or does it have to be powder 🧐

I have started my course! Feel quite good about that. Much as I did get my first one finished, I would really like to do this one without getting behind and stressed out, and needing an extension. They do know I’m trying to fit it in around a whole lot of stuff but still, it would be great to not need it! At least this time there’s no assessed practical element which is what made me really anxious last time.

Unfortunately Cagletini has had another late nap 😰 so that’ll mess up this evening. Sigh. CBA with anything else today really (have done some laundry), might read for a bit now.

SingToTheSky · 22/11/2020 17:35

Can DD2 do things before the walk next time zoo? I have to do that with DD1, she will take an inch and run a mile if I do my half of whatever bargain first. So frustrating. I obv have total sympathy for the panic attacks etc but there must be some way she can help you 💐

FreakyForestier · 22/11/2020 17:37

Did not know that about mustard and cheesiness. What a great tip. Almost have the room ready for the joiner. Just a shelf and door frame and door to paint. Carpet has been cut with Stanley knife and sliding door dismantled. Screws were a nightmare to undo but it's done. Steak and wine now 🍷🍷🍷🍖

FreakyForestier · 22/11/2020 17:39

All rooms upstairs a nightmare so boudoir week is cancelled in my house.

TheUpholder · 22/11/2020 19:08

DH often stirs a dollop of mustard in with his mash Sing. I didn’t know about the cheesiness thing either but will give it a go.

Foxes you’ve been busy today!

Grrr at lack of bin sorting Zoo. I’d love to see your pretty bedding. I love a nicely made bed.

Enjoy your steak and wine Freaky

Hope you’re feeling a bit less grumpy Hills.

Ta da:
✅ downstairs all dusted, hoovered and mopped
✅ sticky yoghurt finger smears wiped off living room window
✅ toys basket sorted in living room
✅ supermarket trip once DH got home to get some alone time and scoff a chocolate bar in the car
✅ shopping put away
✅ another LOL
✅ clean laundry away. Well. Dumped in the correct area.
✅ soaked fruit ready for making Christmas cake tomorrow.
✅ made sausage and mash with DH. Scoffed. Tidied kitchen and set of DW

About to bath DD and do bedtime, then do some planning of what needs to be done in the next few weeks. Baking, ironing and a quick clean of upstairs to be done tomorrow, as well as a walk as I did the shopping while DH and DD went out today.
