A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Husband had Boots flu jab fiasco today. He booked online and paid but when he showed up after taking morning off work they said online APTS not showing on computer in-store so turned him away. Big IT problem apparently

Oh how annoying. I’m regretting not booking ours the second I saw some slots, no doubt it’s too late for the rest of us, although actually I had a letter inviting me to book one for DS at the doctor?! I should ring them as even if we don’t all get protected it’s better than all of us getting sick. I guess it’s age related - DD1 too old and DD2 too young?

Mog hope you’ve had a fabulous day, well done on the running! I really cherish the time I get in the house alone, it’s much rarer since lockdown - fewer places to go!

Read today that our cinema is likely to close too. Sigh. I went once and the big Caglets did once, but that’s all we’ve managed to fit in, I wish I’d made more effort now :(

I’ve been pretty tired and wobbly again since spending the afternoon outdoors getting A Bit Chilly towards the end. But it was nice to have fresh air and chat! :) DD1 did her maths homework, started dance (poster planning) and revised history, so it wasn’t a wasted day for her thankfully.

I need to go and check my Habitica app to see how I am doing on my To Do List. I’ve still got myriad lists on my notes and reminders apps, but I’m hoping that by shifting a few onto this one at a time with set deadlines etc I can manage a bit more. I definitely need to do more of my assignment though. I’m going to try doing some now even though I’m alone with Cagletini and the Netflix Babysitter! If I wait till later I’ll be too tired!

So yesterday DH picked up DS from a friend's house and the grocery pick up order since I had to work. I walked in the door last night and smelt food cooking. Turns out DD had food in the slow cooker for her. I had my hopes up that dinner would have been ready for when I got home, but really I knew better.

Oh well. I'm back at work today, DS has football ⚽️ practice tonight and I'm thinking I'll just make leftovers for dinner. I'm off work tomorrow so will do more meal prep for the week then.
At work there is a lady in a different dept that is home sick with Covid. She had been in with a fever too so fingers crossed she didn't pass it on to anyone in our office, but only time will tell.

I was going to add personals but now I don't remember who said what! So 👻👋 to everyone

SingToTheSky · 05/10/2020 20:08

I just had to share this.

Brilliant sing - there should be a Fatboy Slim video for it like 'Right here, right now'

Mc3209 · 05/10/2020 20:34

Sing I love the meme 😂 Made me chuckle.
Hazel ah no, that's so disappointing re dinner. Next time make dinner just for yourself, to teach a lesson.

Looks like flu vaccine is the new 'it' thing. I hope everyone who is looking for one manages to book a slot.

Ta Da:
🎉LOL
🎉Living room blitzed
🎉Small room dusted and surfaces cleaned.
🎉Downstairs hoovered
🎉Coffee machine descaled
🎉 Indoor plants watered

Apologies if I forgot any personals.

apumpkinaday · 05/10/2020 20:38

I’m drained today, I don’t know if it’s the stress of DC’s dad, school classes locking down or just general life but I’m just feeling crap. The kids are not long in bed, I’m doing some marking. We made jelly today, I had got a mould so thought it would come out in a lovely shape but it didn’t go very well. Tasted brill though and the kids enjoyed it. Also got some loo roll in the shopping, the only one that was delivered was coconut scented or something (fuming tbh I’ll get thrush now), anyway I walked into the bathroom and saw DS munching on it, I told him to stop and took it away, 5 mins later he was at it again. I asked him what he was doing and he just said “tastes too good”!.

It is super frustrating mc, I don’t understand how it’s the same man I was in love with!. But oh well, the kids have me that’s what they need. I love a good face mask, but like you I rarely do them.

Put your feet up hazel! You’ve had a very busy day.

I’m sorry you’ve gone through similar zoo, it doesn’t hurt me that he isn’t seeing me, I wish I could never see him again. But it absolutely kills me to see my little ones get excited to see daddy and then not have him turn up. But as you say, when they get older they can make their own decisions and I’ll support them whatever that’ll be.

ED They’re all villa supporters on moms side, West Brom or blues on dads and me and my dad are Sheffield Wednesday fans. Moms group chat has never been so busy!.

wellies I don’t think I’d like to be a Liverpool fan after that match!.

Thank you up that means a lot!.

sing I think mental health days are brilliant and should be more widely accepted!. Love the pic!

bower I shall definitely cherish these moments.

foxes I need to get flu jabs sorted but I can’t find any anywhere!

apumpkinaday · 05/10/2020 20:38

A pic would help

MogTheShriekyCat · 05/10/2020 21:11

Evening all, sorry for lack of personals, just time for a list dump:
🏃🏼‍♀️ School run
🏃🏼‍♀️ Drive to country park for next C25K
🏃🏼‍♀️ Trip to Aldi; came back with lots of stuff I wasn't aware I needed 🤭
🏃🏼‍♀️ Sat in garden with chickens so they could have free range time, cat joined me for a cuddle
🏃🏼‍♀️ Cooked dinner
🏃🏼‍♀️ x2 LOL washed and dried
🏃🏼‍♀️ Beds made
🏃🏼‍♀️ DW loaded and unloaded, pots and pans washed
🏃🏼‍♀️ Cleaned kitchen table and work tops
🏃🏼‍♀️ Admin - paid for school trip, returned flu consent, sent some emails
🏃🏼‍♀️ School run

DS has had another very challenging day at school. DH and are starting to get quite anxious and despondent about his future. His needs are not severe enough for a special school, but he is struggling a lot with mainstream. If it wasn't for his incredible LSA 1:1 I doubt we would have got this far. Feeling flat after what had felt like a great day

MogTheShriekyCat · 05/10/2020 21:13

Pumpkin sorry you feel crap. Sounds like a lot of things building up 💐

Mog worrying about DCs is so tough. It can be tricky when a child is in that middle zone.

I’ve had a productive day by my usual standards! I need to sleep though. Yoga in 12 hours and I’m walking there as friend can’t make it. Just realised I need to finish planning what DS and bestie can do together as she’s dropping him off for a bit in the afternoon.

Mog lovely pic. My bantams looked so funny yesterday. They were soaking wet and looked so bedraggled.

Zoo I cooked it for 30 mins then put the bacon on ( I had back bacon I bet the smokey streaky is better) and cooked it for another 30minutes then had a look at it and took a slice off. It smelt ready if you know what I mean. It was from his Christmas book. I just googled and his sounded the nicest from about four I read and I happened to have fennel. I was a bit sceptical about the jam but it actual made the sauce. We have loads of black currant jam as I made some and still have some from 2018.
😬 I’ve had my flu jab.Nurse mentioned it last week as not old enough but DH is. I said GP always gave me one and she asked why. I said because I am asthmatic she said “Oh yes! I’ll just give you one then.”
You’re wondering why I telling this...she is my asthma nurse! 🤣😂
Pumpkin don’t ask me why but my mum used to rinse the mould with cold water first and we always put a little less water. Then sit/ hold the mould in a bowl of hot water for 30 s -1minute. Put the plate on top then tip slowly. We used to make a green one as well and chop it up so bunny was sitting on grass. “ Tastes too good.” 😂🤣hilarious. Don’t tell them on the hoarding thread.

DH and DS3 are both Liverpool fans.😭😭

To all fledglings with teenagers.
My mum used to make me make lunch and tea on Saturdays. I made lunch from the time I was about 11 or 12 which consisted of a salad and a big plate of salami, the variety was up to me. We had a lot of Italians in the area so it was easy to buy from a deli. The others all owed fruit and veg shops including my friend Jacinta whose dad used to chill us a big bit of watermelon on a hot day.
From 14 ( we moved) I used to do all the shopping. My mum didn’t drive so I walked the 1 1/2 miles in We to the butchers, greengrocers, supermarket and newsagent then got a taxi back. Then I would make something for tea. Homemade beef burgers, mince, meatballs etc for 8/9 of us.

ChillerKillerCroissant · 05/10/2020 22:50

That strongly resembles my ironing pile, sing Grin It's on the spare bed ATM, must work my way through it today (although I avoided doing some reading/online training that I need to finish).

Folded laundry today, did more and hung it up. Put DD's soaking wet coat in the airing cupboard to dry, will get that out now (still raining heavily) and will need to iron shirts tomorrow morning as a bit tired and will head to bed early.

No flu jabs to be had here either, DH is on a waiting list at a local chemist even though he should get one anyway at the GP's (diabetes) and even I'm old enough to get one as over 50's are recommended to get one this year - even though the Government just brought this in and chemists/doctors ordered their supplies a year ago. I can see why there are no jabs available just now!

Bowerbird5 · 05/10/2020 23:08

Forgot my Ta Das had to go and do something I forgot.
S&S
Fed hens.
Vacuumed downstairs.
Dusted every surface in sitting room.
Wiped sash window.
Wiped window sill
Did a basket of ironing
Sorted basket of RC.
Sorted through BRC x2 checking through school stuff. I think I took most of it in already but HT mentioned it . They have some of my things. What’s the bet my Buddhist singing bowl is gone. I paid £32 to a Nepalese charity for it.
Fed hens again. Scraps for them. 😂 so funny.
DH did the bin yesterday.
Kitchen is pretty clean and tidy. I will do the dresser and wall rack this week.
Made meatballs from the left over mince from the meatloaf. Had spaghetti and meatballs for tea.
Have some meatloaf for tomorrow’s lunch then going to DS1’s for tea as it is his birthday. He wants a take away - Chinese.

Rested tonight as bp up and pulse rate 109.

Bowerbird5 · 05/10/2020 23:12

Chiller you have to be 65 to have one at GPs here unless other conditions.
Sing that meme made me laugh🤣

foxessocks · 06/10/2020 07:00

wellies I had a corporate voucher which provided me with a link to boots website and allowed me to book that way. I have a strong feeling that like Lisette dh we will arrive and not be booked in!

I'm sorry that you aren't able to get yours, my GP is running flu jabs / nasal spray today, ds has his there . My mum is asthmatic I haven't asked her if she has managed to get one 🤔 if she can't I wonder if I can get us swapped over on mine as I hate to think people are going without. I knew there were shortages but I naively thought people who get free jabs were ok!

foxessocks · 06/10/2020 07:12

I'm guessing I wouldn't be allowed to give my voucher to my mum anyway since my work are providing it it is probably part of my contract I can't pass it to someone else, it's all in my name etc , it seems odd though, surely vulnerable should get them first if there is a shortage? All comes down to money ☹️

Morning all,

Sorry for late links, I forgot Blush.

Tuesday - today's babystep is hotspots. This is a good one, worth reading if you are new to the system.

Our mission today is to scrub our kitchen counters Flightplan for the day is here with all the info you need for planning day, paper clutter, mission.

Bowerbird5 · 06/10/2020 10:25

Thanks ED. Possibly only Zoo that has started already. I just done anti procrastination email.

Foxes Your mum should get one as asthmatics are usually on priority list especially if over 60. Perhaps remind her to ring and check. There was a shortage last year but when I asked I was told I would receive a text. DH has had his text but won’t go. I still hadn’t so planned to mention it to nurse if she didn’t.

Zoo yes we had the bunny. It was a metal mould. When I had kids I bought a bunny mould ( plastic) so they could have it. We made it for birthday parties too. Sorry you were awake then. I was awake about 1.45 for a while but eventually went back to sleep. Great start though make sure you have a nap later. Love the fact you have a dumping crate with lids and no bottom. DH always wants to throw them out. If good ones I squirrel them somewhere else in the hope they will marry up one day. There should be somewhere to send all the Tupperware type stuff. Then somebody could marry it up 🤣and sell for charity.

Wellies might have been a nuisance but you had an excuse to go on here.😁 hope the day improves. That is the sort of thing that would happen to me. DH just stands and laughs. Even when the rose attacked me then he realised he shouldn’t have when my head was bleeding. I had it pruned and tied back recently. It was why we got those two young men here then they pruned lots of other stuff. So worth it.

Right need to do a little of home bleugh as I didn’t do it all yesterday.
Change bed sheets. It was because I had a sheet in the ironing pile. Then I forgot until bedtime then couldn’t be bothered. Naughty corner for me. Leaves 🥐☕️🥐👽☕️🥐☕️🥐☕️🥐🥐☕️🥐
