Fledglings Flying Frightfully into October

A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Another one here who has to remind her teen that whatever is on her fork goes into her mouth entirely - it's not for biting chunks off.

It's amazing any of us have kept our sanity Grin

Evening all, apologies for forgetting links this morning, it slipped my mind.

Not much happening here today, it has rained ALL day.

Went to Sainsburys for a few bits, including some shampoo etc for emergency aid to the Greek refugee camp which suffered a fire recently, dropped to collection point on the way home.

Took DD to swimming.

Cooked dinner.

Made packed lunch for tomorrow.

Several LOL

Now watching football. DS is very happy indeed, in fact over the moon, with the score (with apologies possibly to Chic and a few others?).

Flare up day and I definitely want to curl up and shut the world out. Done no planning or my to do list - woke up feeling like a train had hit me Hmm

Going to post my list in case I don’t get back to MN later, then I need to print some history stuff for DD1 and get on with planning for DS. Going to make it more of a chilled/free project type week learning wise partly because I want to see if I can balance things a bit better because he’s struggling with the loneliness now (this is NOT how home ed used to be for him at all and I’m really sad for him and angry at the stupid virus), and also because I am freaking the hell out about the next week. I’ve said yes to too many things and have other things that need to be attended and it’s all just happening at once and I. Want. To. Cry. Everybody needs things from me.

ta da
🧲reading - almost finished book
🧲paid for dancing
🧲looked into parkour prices, grumbled about them
🧲LOL, grumbled about the fact that WM shredded my sports bra
🧲got DS to do his laundry
🧲got Cagletini’s clothes and nursery bag ready for tomorrow

Hi all. We had a subway today, it was lovely. I haven’t had a subway for a while. Also, DC’s dad hasn’t contacted me for about a week. I messaged him yesterday to see if he’d like to come over and see the kids and he didn’t reply. Then I asked if he’d have the kids from nursery one day in the week as I have an appointment meaning I can’t pick them up from nursery, DM has said she’ll do it but I thought it’d be nice for him to have the kids. It’s so frustrating! He does this every time he gets a new girlfriend and I feel like next time he tries to come back in our lives just telling him to do one. Sorry for my rang, I’m just really frustrated!

zoo I can’t believe people at school like Leo DiCaprio, he was my crush at school!.

Your day sounded lovely up and your spice drawer is amazing!

Well done on the running mog, that’s brill!. Enjoy your silent house tomorrow.

ED a lot of my family are very happy with the football, the group chat has gone crazy.

sing I’m sorry about the flare up, that’s really shit. I hope you can have an easier week. Is there anything you can cancel for next week to ease the pressure?

Further ta da
🧲replaced screen protector on phone
🧲ordered skirt for DD1, and a pocket money purchase of a hoodie, plus added Christmas present for DS
🧲added a load of tasks to Habitica in the hope it would make me do stuff this week
🧲arranged meeting time for tomorrow
🧲pretty much planned the full home ed week for DS, and added some notes to the next couple of weeks too
🧲filled in weekly plan sheet from diary, told DH how much it was stressing me out and we talked over it all and I feel a bit better

So, slightly more optimistic about the week ahead. Need to sleep now. DD1 still awake Hmm

Mc3209 · 04/10/2020 23:58

I am very impressed with Halloween themed name changes!
Lovely spices drawer Up! I shall be sorting mine this week.
Pumpkin your ex sounds like a royal pain in the ass. Very, very frustrating.
Mog Go you with the running! I wish I was a runner. Sadly I am not. Always envious (in a good way) of people who run.

Ta da:
🎉Morning routine
🎉Kitchen cleaned. DH decided to make bread today and there was an almighty Armageddon once he was done. I DLMS when I saw the flour all over the place and pretty much every pan we own being murky. I also DLMS when he plonked next batch of dirty dishes in the sink instead of unloading the DW and putting them there.
🎉Aquarium water change and maintenance X2
🎉Upstairs and downstairs vacuumed
🎉Bathroom blitzed
🎉Face mask done. I should really do those more frequently than once in a blue moon.
Good night, everyone! May tomorrow be a start of a good week xx

HauntingHazel · 05/10/2020 03:27

So my day didn't go as planned. I was on the Skype call with my mum when my 2nd workplace called. I was supposed to work today and I had forgotten to check the schedule during the week 🤦‍♀️ so I quickly ended my Skype call, rushed around and showed up 30 minutes late, but worked an extra 30 minutes in the end as we were busy.
So having said that, my ta das are not very impressive!

Ta Das:
🎃 Dropped DS off at a friend's house
🎃 Submitted grocery pick up order
🎃 Skyped mum for maybe 10 minutes
🎃 Started on cheese and onion pie (keto friendly crust) which I had to abandon, I was making it for my lunch.
🎃 Called DH to make sure he could pick up groceries and DS
🎃 worked 6 1/2 hours at my 2nd job
🎃 Finished cheese and onion pie that's now cooking in the oven.

I just have to finish cleaning up the kitchen, and maybe attempt some ironing after dinner. It ended up being a good day, even though it didn't go as planned. I've missed working at my 2nd job, they had to cut hours so I wasn't scheduled in September at all. My feet hurt though as I'm not usually on them that much at my main job.

Stilllivinginazoo · 05/10/2020 05:56

hazel put those feet up
Mog well done on the run.enjiy peaceful house today
Up epic listStarnice spice organising
Pumpkin when DC are older the can work out who matters.lil zoo given up bothering and dd2 gets mad at self if responds then he don't keep things going.as long as mum's consistent they be ok,but it's still crap and frustratingFlowers
Sing hope you feel a bit better today
Wellieslavender bath sounds like great way soothe days frazzles.i don't need/want continuous gravy, but custard idea makes me want slab warm ginger cake and stewed pears with it!
Ed hope D's isn't hell on earth to wake this morning
MC don't blame you LS over that level of mess.was the bread Worth It?

Up and about to attack the day

foxessocks · 05/10/2020 07:08

Morning everyone! Just checking back in again. Will hopefully catch up later. Need to get moving, been up since half 6 but haven't actually got further thank making Brew

EerilyDeleted · 05/10/2020 07:28

Morning all,

Foxes welcome back.

Hazel - hope you are fast asleep.

Pumpkin - our family whatsapp has been very, very silent, they all support either Man U or Blues. Grandad did ring DS to talk it all over though.

Happy Monday everyone.

Thanks for links ED. Determined this month to keep up with the zone stuff and missions. My bin cupboard really needs a clean and it looks like there’s no excuse given it’s today’s mission Sad.

Enjoy your day to yourself Mog. I have one on Friday. I very much need time to myself regularly or I LMS. Well done on the run!

Hope you are all feeling a bit better Bower, Zoo, Sing.

Angry at ex Pumpkin. It’s so unfair to his DC, but you sound like a lovely Mum.

What a stress with work Hazel. That happened to me one years ago and I’ve never got dressed so quickly Grin

Waves to Lisette, Wellies, Mc, Stressy, That, Dancing, Cineraria, Croissant, Foxes, Merry and SC if you’re reading. Apologies if I’ve missed anyone off the list today.

Ta Das:
🙌🏻 beds made/curtains open
🙌🏻 s & s
🙌🏻 LOL
🙌🏻 Breakfast for DD and calories counted breakfast for me
🙌🏻 mince out of freezer for lasagne
🙌🏻 finished off DH’s half-arsed effort at sorting the kitchen last night Hmm
🙌🏻 opened a new regular savings account with bank. I’ve got loads of different pots with monzo, but it turns out there’s a faaaar better interest rate with my main bank. Need to pay in monthly though and it’s locked away for a year Confused

To do:
🐦 finish cup of tea
🐦 get me and DD ready
🐦 dust and hoover upstairs
🐦 clean bathroom
🐦 prepare self for bin cleaning
🐦 clean bin cupboard
🐦 run hoover and mop over living room and kitchen again Hmm
🐦 wrap and deliver another birthday present
🐦 ironing for the week
🐦 some exercise
🐦 make soup for lunch/work, banana loaf to use up manky bananas, lasagne for dinner and overnight oats for 3 work days
🐦 pack nursery/work bags

In amongst that lot there’ll be a walk with DD (looking like a wet one) and she’s requested puzzles and colouring in. That I can manage!

Best get moving then

SingToTheSky · 05/10/2020 09:31

Morning all. DD1 surprised me by asking to stay home. I did tell her the other week when she agreed to stick it out that when she really needed a “mental health day” she could have one, but I wasn’t expecting her to ask for one so soon TBH! She’s usually determined to go in even when ill or upset. Hmm. Anyway she’s got back out of her uniform (must make sure it’s not left crumpled on the floor Hmm) and joined DH on the nursery run. Will get her doing homework during the day too, she’s got a few bits due on Friday.

One of my meetings was cancelled which is good in one sense as it leaves more time for the play date. But not sure when we can rearrange for. Also I would have gone swimming this morning if I’d known, but then being this achy I’m not sure if I should anyway. Yoga tomorrow.

Bowerbird5 · 05/10/2020 09:38

Morning,

Zoo didn’t answer before as I was very tired and wanted to read your post again to give it full attention. At least with the diagnosis you DS will have more attention and EHCP from the school but I understand your grieving for what might have been. I imagine you have seen the aeroplane trip to a different country letter. I remember the first time I read it I was on placement at the Special School. He sounds like he has some lovely qualities from your posts. Glad to hear you are making time for yourself. A little time each day is to be recommended.

Lovely times pumpkin cherish them. You will look back on that photo and smile.

Good to see you foxes
Hope you got some rest Hazel
MC you should have walked out and left him to clean up his mess. I hope the bread was good.

Mog impressed about the running. Not something I couldn’t get into. I tried at 16 as I was going to zone cross country but I didn’t like it. It was cancelled due to the river we were going through was flooded and too dangerous. Our own cross country was bad enough. No H&S those days just turfed you out of minibus and you ran back to school through barb wire fences, cross the beck, it was rough, over grown land.
I have an old ligament injury now that flares up with any prolonged running. I can see how it relieves stress though.

Didn’t get on yesterday
But
Had long lie in.
Watched Mass online- I got really stressed the week before as there was such a lot of people. Going to go to Friday night and watch online on Sunday.
Made Jamie Oliver’s meatloaf. Added some red pepper that needed using. It was delicious. DH liked it. Yeah. Recipe was for 12 but just divided by four. Going to suggest it to BF as she has 12 for lunch in normal times.
Chopped up peelings for hen, they loved them. 3 eggs.
Read my book.
Watched a bit of tv.
Made a sandwich for tea and DH had a sandwich and my sausage roll. Washed up.
BP down slightly.
Finished book. Good twist at the end.
Watched the Agatha Christie.

bower this might seem thick, but if decide it by 4 how long do you cook it,and in what size dish/tin?(D's loves meatloaf but I'm put off making loads of it as there's only two who would eat it)

foxessocks · 05/10/2020 13:15

Goodnesszoo your school runs are harder than mine, I sympathise!! Mine is about an hour round trip maybe a bit less when I'm walking on my own but I do only have to do it twice!

So today I have decided that despite how crazy busy work is, i am going to make sure I get up from my desk at regular intervals and use that to do some flying! Because if I was in the office I'd be stopping to chat to someone / answer phone / make tea so it's no different, I'm more productive from home anyway as last week's time in the office proved 🤦‍♀️

I never really get to stop on a Monday otherwise because technically I use my lunch break to collect the kids!

Ta das
School run / nursery run
Washing hung up and another load on because the sun came out! Don't get me started on the fact dh lost the shed key and so I had to break into the shed to get my pegs 😂
Dishwasher
Rubbish out / bins out
Booked flu jabs
Found lasagne in the freezer for my lunch
Some washing put away

Finishing eating now and then back to work, hopefully be back later!

Stilllivinginazoo · 05/10/2020 14:21

Picked up dd2
Grabbed vitality spread as we had run out on route
Lunch
Put away last bits on side from sorting silverfish cupboard
Lunch
Washed up
Walk D's back to school, having set up computer for D's online maths lesson

Home again, started pouring just as I walked up our street...

I have 40 minutes,then off I go again!
Want finish tidying my baking cupboard before then
