Fledglings Flying Frightfully into October

A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Well last night i came across not one but two jobs being advertised by my LA so that has cheered me up. I will apply for both. They are nearer home for me and a slightly different path to current job but fit well with my degree and experience so 🤞

Hypopressives are a specialised breathing exercise which helps to strengthen core and pelvic floor. It's not something you can just learn from youtube videos or whatever, it needs to be taught by a properly trained person, we have one locally, I did a course with her a couple of years ago and we have continued in a small group by zoom through lockdown. I suffered with prolapses following childbirth so this is important for me, but it's good for anyone.

EerilyDeleted · 17/10/2020 10:43

That's a lovely thing for your mum to be able to do Wellies.

morning. not feeling clever this morning.

foxessocks · 17/10/2020 12:37

They were indeed real sticky buns, it was so ridiculous, dh thought it would be a nice treat to have a sticky bun for breakfast so he put them out for the kids. The kids didn't want sticky buns and instead of just saying that they lost the plot. Both of them at the same time. Crying because we gave them a treat 😂 dh got the hump and ate one of the sticky buns from the children's plate and then they cried more because that was their sticky bun 🙄. Then everyone went off and sulked. And we still haven't eaten the buns (apart from the one dh ate which he said "wasn't worth it")

And guess who was the person to actually buy the sticky buns for the whole family to enjoy this weekend?! Yep, me!

foxessocks · 17/10/2020 12:45

Sounds good about the jobs that

The day hasn't really got a whole better, the kids are in really bad moods today Confused we went for a bike ride because that's what they wanted to do but then dd sulked because we hadn't gone the route she had planned (that she didn't tell us and ds couldn't do on his little bike anyway!) Then they argued over who would go to the shop with me on the way back as I needed help carrying a few things.

We have had delicious bacon sandwiches for lunch though so I'm feeling happier now!

Ta das
Dishwasher (dh)
Washing hung up and more on
Bike ride / family race in the park as promised Grin
Dropped a book off at the little book swap place in our village
Picked some books up (which the kids argued about obviously!)
Went to the shop. Twice, because I forgot the bacon.
Made lunch for the kids
Dh made lunch for us

Need to drink my tea and eat my sticky bun (!!!) so I can put my teeth whitening stuff in this afternoon because I really think I will want a glass of wine this evening so can't do it then!

TheUpholder · 17/10/2020 15:05

Happy weekend everyone!

Hope at least you enjoy the bun Foxes Grin

Well done on getting through the assessment Sing, that would have been my worst nightmare.

Welcome Witchy

Those truffles look amazing Hazel.

It’s taken me a while to catch up this afternoon so please forgive lack of personals to everyone else.

Small ta da list so far:
✅ beds made
✅ s&s (DH did downstairs)
✅ LOL
✅ DW emptied
✅ breakfast made, consumed and cleaned up
✅ hob wiped
✅ sticky fingerprints cleaned off living room window.

We got dressed quite early this morning and headed straight out to the nature reserve before the forecast rain hit. Managed to cajole DD into walking the full circuit round the lake by craftily heading ‘to the park’ in the wrong direction (it’s about a mile and a half so added to ruining riot in the park for half an hour she should sleep well tonight!). We collected some autumn leaves and then headed home for her to glue them while I made boiled egg and soldiers for lunch. DH did a snack run to the shop and is now snoring on the sofa while DD plays.

Still to do:
✅ hang wet washing up
✅ dust, hoover and mop downstairs
✅ declutter a big pile of DD’s artwork. I always feel awful binning it but she produces far too much at home and nursery every week to keep it all.

Sing it’s the free Photobooks app I use. You can add captions to every page. The free ones are pretty basic, but I’ve had no complaints over quality, and you can pay extra to spruce them up.

foxessocks · 17/10/2020 15:45

It was very nice bun up but definitely not worth all the aggro Hmm

Ta das
Teeth whitening
Rhubarb loaf cake in the oven - no idea how it will turn out!
Put washing away in dd room
Hip stretches

Hi all. Just shoving my list on here that I forgot last night. Thanks for all thoughts re assessment and photo book! Will catch up properly later, I’m behind on the thread again.

ta da for yesterday
🎨showered/moisturised
🖌LOL
🎨made plan for the day and finally printed
🖌got DS started on work
🎨made some notes for my assessment
🖌DID MY ASSESSMENT 😅😅😅
🎨wrote most of my other assignment answers on paper
🖌zoom therapy with DS
🎨remembered to get DS to zoom Scouts!
🖌entertained toddler

I actually left this post halfway for about an hour. Clean forgot. 😂😳

We’ve been talking about routines, chores etc, it does feel very much like a Rubik’s cube. Just sorting some laundry now and then I might tidy up the boodwa a bit because otherwise we have no hope of getting the wardrobe up otherwise

SingToTheSky · 17/10/2020 17:05

I didn’t mean to use otherwise twice in one sentence!

I’m still sitting among laundry so I think it’s power of three time.

PO3.1
❗️Put all laundry away that can be put away (hanging stuff just gets piled up for now)
❗️Bit of tidying in boodwa (probably including stash and dash) for at least one episode of Modern Family
❗️Make sure last couple of weeks’ HE plans are retrospectively up to date with what we actually did, and put a rough outline in next week’s

apumpkinaday · 17/10/2020 17:59

Hi all thanks again for your lovely messages, you’re all a great support!. I’ve been keeping myself busy and decided to sort out the kids room, DD got bunk beds a week ago so Her room was a mess whilst I sorted them out but now they’re done I got a few bits and bobs for both of them from the attic that I’ve been putting away for ages so I’ve made their bedrooms all nice and cosy, pics attached.

mc I remember them days of getting the whole house sorted, now I have a 3 year old and 1 year old and it’s a shit tip!.

zoo your celebration sounds lovely, I am really excited to say goodbye to grandad in a proper way. I know he will be so happy we’re celebrating him and not mourning him. Sorry DS had a wobble.

Sorry your day didn’t get off to a good start foxes I hope you enjoyed the rest of the evening though

Thanks ed the timings have worked well, but I do wish we didn’t have to isolate for 2 weeks.

That sounds really great THAT

Pics look fab pumpkin :)

I haven’t started on my list as DH had to go to the shops. Totally crashed energy wise so hopefully after dinner (DH just got back and is making it) I’ll manage to get on with it

Mc3209 · 17/10/2020 21:03

Wellies I know what you mean about clarinet parps :) I have been getting into boogie boogie piano recently, but I am struggling to dissociate my hands to play it properly (working on it....). But it's my go-to pick me up music these days.
Pumpkin I like what you've done with the rooms! I bet your little ones love it.

Right. Ta da:

  • all carpets finally shampooed. What an effort that was! Almost dry now, so can start putting the house back together.
  • Cooked dinner
  • Cleaned kitchen
  • LOL
  • S&S bathroom
  • Aquarium maintenance x3

Now I am sitting on the sofa and I ain't moving.

I am researching slow cookers and crockpots as a present for my mother (who is not into cooking at all). Any recommendations? Looking for something small (3 quart ish) and relatively simple to program.

Stilllivinginazoo · 18/10/2020 06:13

pumpkin gorgeous pics
I thought I posted t time yesterday, but clearly it disappeared

Ended up taking all zoolets on walk as sun came out despite traipsing town and back(3+ hours) sun obviously then hid in clouds, but it was lovely crunching through autumn leaves together!

I got the melting snowmen from Aldi after saw recommended on one my insta accounts I follow(1.99 his tummy is full marshmallows so once he melts into hot milk he is complete hot choc drink!)
Dd2 said was delish (top squirts vegan cream from can)
Lil zoo had d.f salted caramel hot choc with the cream n mallows
DS declared it "wasn't cold enough for hot chocolate"....

Lil zoo was complaining dizzy spells again so slept on me on sofa.think I deffo go need a nap later!

I may push boat and and defrost legs,I may leave them to help keep me warm as hidden under jeans/joggers fulltimeGrin

TheUpholder · 18/10/2020 12:59

I’m in a miserable strop today. DH indulged in a few too many beers before bed last night and so kept me up snoring. Any sort of enthusiasm for the day seems to have disappeared. I’ve had breakfast, done some craft with DD, showered and had a video call with family. Gone back to bed for an hour while DH sorts some lunch. He’s just brought me up a cuppa so I’m going to try and get out my funk.

Zoo your list has motivated me. I think I’ll try one of Sing’s power of 3 lists

  1. up, dressed, make bed
  2. LOL
  3. 5 minute tidy

I have ironing on the radar for later (oh the joy)

Forgot to post the rest of my ta das yesterday:
✅ dusted downstairs
✅ floors hoovered and mopped
✅ got DH to empty his drawer of crap from the dining room sideboard into his big basket of crap, also in the dining room, so I now have an extra drawer for DD’s craft stuff which was overflowing. He decluttered a few bits in the process 🙌🏻

Love the bedrooms Pumpkin, glad you came back to us.

I need to check out these melting snowmen! For a hamper Christmas gift for someone of course, my expanding waistline does not need one at all and I will ensure that no spares find their way into my trolley of course

Mc I have had one of the basic cookworks slowcookers from Argos for years and it’s still going strong. No programming, just low or high.
