Fledglings Flying Frightfully into October

A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Afternoon all,

I wasn't going to post links as it's Sunday, when we are supposed to renew our spirit by going for a walk, having a bath or similar.

However today's babystep is a good one, which is to read Flylady's 11 Commandments link. These are a good summary of the basics plus a few bits of life advice. I particularly like "Don't forget to laugh every day".

So, in order to renew my spirit I have been for a walk this morning by myself, and have got a chocolate cake in the oven.

Shopping has been collected from Sainsburys (click and collect) and put away. Washing is on the line. Gammon is ready to go in the instant pot for later.

Mc - I have an Instant Pot multi cooker which is great but doesn't really fulfill your criteria of simple to operate. Prior to that I had a basic slowcooker from Sainsburys, which literally just had three heat settings and an on/off button and cost about £20. That might be more what you have in mind.

OP posts:
foxessocks · 18/10/2020 13:13

MC my slow cooker was from Tesco I think z years ago, about £20 and just has high, low and warm settings. It's brilliant and has lasted so well! You can usually find then in most supermarkets.

ED a walk and chocolate cake sounds so good!

Zoo great list! Love the sound of those hot chocolates!

Up I know the exact feeling when you're in a slump like that. I hope you got out of it! I do always find getting up and getting a few things off the to do list helps me.

Going to eat my lunch now , be back with ta das shortly!

TheUpholder · 18/10/2020 13:17

Ah ha, thanks ED. I haven’t been wallowing, I’ve been renewing my spirit Grin. Wise words Foxes, I’m moving my grumpy arse.

foxessocks · 18/10/2020 15:51

Ta das
Dh cleaned bathroom
Hoovered downstairs again (cat keeps leaving hair balls everywhere 🙄)
Dh put ds mario kart away finally (it has been in our living room for over a month!)
Tidied loads of toys from the front room
Dishwasher X 2
LOL X 3 (although last load I do still need to hang up)
Dh cooked lunch - sausages beans and chips
Dd cleaned all the stuff on my chest of drawers, put it all back beautifully and dusted it Shock I was genuinely impressed!!
Dd used the feather duster to clean the corners of the living room
Both kids have done some weeding
Ds and dh washed the car
Me / dd changed her bed sheets (which was hilarious because I was trying to show her how to turn the duvet cover inside out and started messing about to make her laugh but then got actually stuck in it and had to be rescued 😂)
Renewed my spirit - laughing with dd and I painted my nails in a colour chosen by dd (sparkly gold obviously!)
Cleaned out my bedside table, decluttered and dusted
Tried to cut up the squash ready for soup but I literally can't get a knife through it Confused am going to have to see if dh can! (hate this because he will probably do it fine and think I'm a feeble female!)
Did a few hip stretches but tbh should have done more, ran out of motivation!
Polished all the mirrors
Made a list of main housework tasks to tick off this week
Teeth whitening

Kids swimming lessons soon so will need to get their stuff sorted in a minute.

I'm not sure whether my new increased work hours will start this week or not but I feel like I've at least managed to get a bit ahead with the housework (although I'm sure this time tomorrow I'll be feeling behind again on account of housework being never ending 🙄)

HillsBesideTheSea · 18/10/2020 15:54

"I may push boat and and defrost legs,I may leave them to help keep me warm as hidden under jeans/joggers fulltime" DEFROST legs Zoo???

i did the renew spirit last night. and feeling a bit better for it. Still suffering from stuffs and procedure so the get up and go is not strong. However, the need for clean clothes is. I would like a more adulty adult to supervise and take over...

Anyone else get cooking fatigue? I am just plum out of food ideas for tea atm. And I have to do the next month's food plan so i can batch cook. i don't want to

foxessocks · 18/10/2020 15:55

Forgot I also decluttered the shoes in the porch finally, summer sandals back upstairs, pairs of shoes the kids have grown out of in charity back, cleaned up one particularly muddy pair of boots. Need to take some stuff to a charity shop because it's building up again.

SingToTheSky · 18/10/2020 16:05

Hills defrost just means shaving, a few threads back I wrote ‘deforested legs’ on my ta da list, and several of us* misread it as defrost so it stuck!

*Including me, despite the fact I wrote it in the first place Confused

I’ve just done a few episodes’ worth of tidying in our room. Got some stuff thrown out and a bit of random crap to shove in the cupboard. Also moved most of our clothes out of the way of where the wardrobe will go. No way are we ready to build it today though. Everything seems to take so bloody long these days!

SingToTheSky · 18/10/2020 16:06

And yes total sympathy on the cooking fatigue. I am just DONE with cooking, not even the cooking actually, just the THINKING of what people will/can actually eat, it’s exhausting and thankless. If I won the lottery the first thing I’d do would be to hire a private chef and never have to meal plan or shop again. Ever.

HillsBesideTheSea · 18/10/2020 16:10

I did wonder if it was something like that. there are several things unique to the thread like that. Thank you for clarifying Sing.

A private chef would take one look at our allergies and go "hell no! good luck with that one". Allergies are the worst and means i am often planning 2 or 3 meals per meal to feed everyone.

Very impressed wellies 😋

foxessocks · 18/10/2020 16:37

Tbf up some days, like yesterday, even when I get up and try and do a few things to get motivated i just feel like I'm wading through treacle and can't seem to make any decisions 🤷‍♀️ I guess sometimes it just isn't happening, a bit of rest and relaxation is always useful anyway!!

TheUpholder · 18/10/2020 16:51

Glad I’m not alone Foxes!

I did drag myself up and completed the power of 3 (with the help of my comfy hoody, that rarely sees the light of day except when I’m poorly or feeling sorry for myself Grin) and as a bonus I also set off the DW and wiped down the benches. The house feels back under control and I am feeling more like myself, but I am back to lazing on the sofa for the foreseeable.

Hills I am with you with the menu fatigue. In our house DH does most of the cooking, but I do most of the shopping and he always wants me to think about what to cook/do the meal planning. I’ve told him I’m on strike today and he has permission to feed us whatever he likes secretly hoping for Indian takeaway. We are in enough in a rut in a thankfully allergy-free non-fussy household. Anyone with any of the above considerations in the mix has my sympathy.

Wellies that is an impressive list for a Sunday and I am drooling at both the lamb and the tart. We do a roast most weeks but neither of us made any sort of effort at the buying of a joint this weekend.

Sounds like good progress in the boudoir Sing

Mc3209 · 18/10/2020 17:02

foxes what a list! You've been busy. Loving the getting stuck in duvet cover story 😂
Wellies it's lamb for dinner at ours today too! It's probably my favourite roast.
Up glad to read you are slowly emerging from the funk.

My Ta das for today are not very orthodox:
🎉Nap on a sofa
🎉Lazy waddle in the park
🎉Ok, I did make lunch - spicy butternut squash soup.

Now I hear the sofa calling, and who am I to resist..

Mc3209 · 18/10/2020 17:10

Also, anyone who fancies a laugh, I can recommend reading customer reviews for Astra Sugar Free Gummy Bears on Amazon (I know, not the most obvious place of comedy, but it entertained me to no end!). Warning, I have a sense of humour of a 7 year old boy though..

Stilllivinginazoo · 18/10/2020 18:12

MC think I've seen that beforeGrin
Wellies that tart looks like I need slither to the table and tuck napkin into top my jammies!!
Up glad you pulled it round.ita hard when you just not feeling it to get it together.well done
Hills it seems sing has explained it for me.totalky get the meal fatigue.currently lil zoo wants "cold picky teas" as tummy plays upshe's dairy free so it mainly which seems revolve mainly around variations of d.f pestos and cheeses, bread of some kind and salad veg.dd2 anxiety so bad she refuses eat anything but her safe foods so it's bread, cheese and if I'm lucky roasted green beans.its hugely monotonous and I'm bored of it all.im truly grateful I don't have the level allergies that are circling your family.if you care to remind me on here (or privately) of what can't be eaten I could try and help think up something?

Lisette1940 · 18/10/2020 20:52

MC I've seen the Gummi bear reviews before. That poor man at the airport 😁. Very funny.

Mc3209 · 18/10/2020 21:18

Zoo and Lisette I am clearly late to the gummy bear review party 🤣

SingToTheSky · 18/10/2020 21:19

I’ve read some of those before too. I am not normally one for toilet humour but they were so funny! I don’t remember an airport one so I shall have another look.

I am pleased I managed some decluttering earlier as the rest of the afternoon was a bit tricky, Sundays are tough for DH as he takes his osteo meds that day. I have at least managed to order some stuff for the Caglets though.

Stilllivinginazoo · 18/10/2020 22:23

apumpkinaday · 18/10/2020 22:51

Hi all! Sorry I’m on so late. It’s been a busy day today. We went to the woods and it was lovely, it smells autumnal and it was very nippy which makes everything cosy. I cooked Sunday lunch and then got my desk ready for online classes tomorrow.

Thanks sing!

Thanks mc, they do love it! DD loves her little reading nook.

Thanks zoo, glad you also enjoyed an autumn walk. I hope DD does well tomorrow and feel a little calmer.

Sorry about DH’s snoring up, my ex would literally need to be held up after a few drinks he just got like a rag doll. It was infuriating!. Thanks for the room love.

ED ooh a walk and chocolate cake sound perfect!

foxes good going on the shoe tidying!

Ooh wellies that looks very good!!

I feel the same about menu fatigue wellies I have no inspiration anymore.

ta da
🤦‍♀️weighed self
🤦‍♀️got Caglets to move laundry on
🤦‍♀️decluttered home ed downloads a bit
🤦‍♀️towel LOL (then DH did another)
🤦‍♀️wiped out WM seal
🤦‍♀️gathered rubbish and recycling in our room
🤦‍♀️put some random scattered toys away (bits of duplo etc)
🤦‍♀️gathered two BRC and hid in cupboard
🤦‍♀️gathered all the hanging-up clothes put aside
🤦‍♀️gathered all the hangers (discarding broken ones) and put aside
🤦‍♀️trimmed nails
🤦‍♀️small top up shop
🤦‍♀️put in Asda George order with some of the basics the Caglets need and a couple of presents
🤦‍♀️did Homestart customer survey
🤦‍♀️pretty much finished DS’ individual home ed plan for the week (well, four days as DD1’s school has an inset day on Friday!)

Evening was nice, as once DS went to bed DD1 came down to do some drawing while we watched two episodes of bake off. I was doing my planning but we were chatting at the same time :) I like times like this, that can’t be planned for as teenage years continue, but sometimes they just happen. :)

Feel a lot more prepared for the week too as the plan is much more complete than it normally has been on a Sunday night. Will finish and print tomorrow. I do need to then make an end of half term “exam” (basically I’m doing a quiz of stuff he has covered so far) and then plan what he and his friend can do - once Cagletini is able to mix again we are squeezing in their joint lessons :o

My main aim for tomorrow though really has to be my course - I just need to power through my last few questions and not overthink them, and submit everything to see if I have any last minute changes. Hopefully I can get out for a bit as well.

I’ve left the iPad downstairs and I’m going to try an audiobook instead of Netflix to doze off to. I’ve got in an awful rut with sleep lately so trying to improve a little and ditch the blue light!

HauntingHazel · 19/10/2020 02:01

zoo Hopefully DD2 settles so you can sleep.
Speaking of meal fatigue, I can get stuck in a rut with the same meals and I dread cooking. Today I am tired. I worked both days this weekend at my 2nd job so I asked DH to "cook" tonight. He doesn't cook so that's me saying let's pick something up for dinner. I know that'll mean eating carbs that I shouldn't, but I just don't have the energy.

Ta Das Saturday:
🕸 Chicken in slow cooker for dinner
🕸 Work 5hrs
🕸 Put cobwebs up inside for Halloween
🕸 Make apple crumble
🕸 Roast 2nd chicken in oven (family came over for dinner, there were 10 of us total so I wanted to make sure there was enough)
🕸 Cook Yorkshire puddings
🕸 Make gravy
🕸 Wrap presents for my nieces (done before they arrived)
🕸 Clean up dinner
🕸 Have nieces open said presents
🕸 Make blondies while game is being set up
🕸 Play game (Mysterium)
🕸 Drank way too much!

Ta Das Sunday:
🕷 Slept in till almost 10am!
🕷 Worked 5 hours
🕷 Swept kitchen floor
🕷 Mopped kitchen floor
🕷 Wiped countertops and cupboard doors down in kitchen
🕷 Cleaned bathroom sink, toilet and floor surrounding the toilet
🕷 Relaxed on the couch and took a little nap
