A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

Sing what a day lovely..poor DH.i really have got everything X he's going to get something positive from these jabs.and hope little cagletini is ok too.
Wellies pleased to hear strange men were incompetent not scammers!
lil zoo couldn't sleep.came to find me at 1,2,3,4 and then fell asleep watch tv 445.i am so tired barely keep eyes open but mustn't go back sleep so close time they up or will feel even worse

So yesterday I tackled all wiring that's tangled everywhere and faced Meyer cupboards.
Meter cupboards fill damp stuff so just binned everything as we're stuff has gone and never been used/bothered with again
Added damp traps and will venture backim next week to wipe out.my strong sense smell couldn't deal with that currently

Then onto wiring
Armed sellotape pen and paper I unplugged things tracing through tangled mess and labelled plugs so if broadband/TV/VCR etc aren't working I know which if I'm taking out etc.taped long trailing wires into little rolled up bits and the it was magically was clear floor!wiped and returned cat tree I really pleased and wish I'd taken before and aftershots!
DS had flu spray.nurse told him might feel ill.hes now fretting he will, and some numpty keeps letting over very loud bangs fireworks at 730pm, transforming ds to jibbering wreck(frightening card and setting numerous local dogs to barking frenzy)

Bit of shopping,Sen support chat and a to do list of f epic proportions to take a run at today

Stilllivinginazoo · 13/10/2020 06:34

foxessocks · 13/10/2020 07:05

zoo sorry still no proper sleep Sad You didn't miss about my hip, I don't really know what the problem is but it has happened a few times now , it just really hurts when I move basically Confused

It seems to be better again this morning though. I still have the headache unfortunately and the dc arguing is not helping 😬

Today I must do some hip stretches to try and prevent it happening again, I also have work AM and could do with doing some baking so we've got stuff for lunch boxes snacks etc .

I must go and sort breakfast now to stop the kids aggravating each other!

Stilllivinginazoo · 13/10/2020 07:09

foxes any particular stretches any good

Inhaled three slices toast and DF flora.vrazed on carbs I at least look less zombie!

Time try convince lil zoo to eat/drinkand check on D's see if he's got any I'll effects of flu spray, which will be "interesting" as all he very slides is feels funny and it's a guessing game to find the symptom.bithering him and treat appropriately...

Dancingtomusic · 13/10/2020 07:43

Sing - hope your little DC are ok.

Hoping your DH is ok after procedure, so sad to hear it was so painful.

Hvnt been reading thread.

Hope everyone is ok.

MrsTidyHouse · 13/10/2020 08:19

Today's To-Dos

Kitchen corner needs a rethink, as it is permanently full of non-kitchen stuff.

Non-kitchen stuff can go in office/cupboard, which is now mostly cupboard now that computer is in living-room.

Living-floor must be cleared by this evening, otherwise the mess will become permanent.

Then attack the paper clutter. Many years ago I tried Flylady's office-in-a-bag method. It definitely worked for a while. Might try that again. Despite computer, tablet and phone, I still have an awful lot of paper.

SingToTheSky · 13/10/2020 08:29

Thank you for all the well wishes! Cagletini is fine thus far. DH is looking a bit better.

ta da from yesterday
🤹‍♀️got Cagletini ready and to nursery on time
🤹‍♀️quick bit of shopping at local Tesco
🤹‍♀️put LOL on (set up last night)
🤹‍♀️home ed
🤹‍♀️zoom chat with assessment buddy
🤹‍♀️collected Cagletini
🤹‍♀️made lunch for me and Cagletini
🤹‍♀️washed dye off DH’s back!
🤹‍♀️vegetated in front of Modern Family
🤹‍♀️cancelled yoga/aqua
🤹‍♀️edited tesco shopping

Feel a bit unsettled about Cagletini having to SI. It is just her according to the rules? But I’d feel guilty knowing that while doing the classes, hence cancelling. Confused Not really looking forward to having to keep her in but needs must. When “auntie” visited she did give her a tenner to spend so I’m tempted to use that for a few puzzles or something in a charity shop to keep her busy.

Loads I should be doing but I feel like hibernating.

apumpkinaday · 13/10/2020 08:34

Hope you’re all okay, sorry I haven’t been on. We’ve had some bad news in the family and am just spending some time processing and caring for another family member. I may not post as much but didn’t want to drop off and not tell you

Pumpkin sorry to hear that. You have such a lot on I hope you get a bit of respite at half term.

MC it could be a hairline crack in a pipe. Are there pipes running under that area?

Zoo shame you have less sleep than usual. Try getting a nap later.

Sing glad DH is feeling a little better. Hope Cagletini is ok. Jigsaws sound a good idea.

MrsTidy paperwork is awful. I still have some to go through but at least now I know I won’t need some of it.😄
Dancing good to hear from you.

ED thanks for links.
Foxes yoga type stretches might help. I had problem with mine a while ago.

👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻👻

Need to go I am getting summoned. We are going to collect the tiles for the kitchen yeah! Thought Boris might have stopped us but her area not on highest list and only the one person. If it stays dry she is going to put them outside to chose.

Short pilates hip workout (I must keep this up!)
Made chicken baguette for lunch

SingToTheSky · 13/10/2020 13:21

I wonder if our get up and gos have all run off together hills 🤔

Pumpkin 💐💕 take care lovely x

Big flat today and glad the HE stuff was partly planned as it really is so much easier to still get stuff done. Cagletini had what I thought was a danger nap at 5 but went right through till 5am! So she will hopefully nap earlier today.

I’m still avoiding everything else I should be doing. 🤦‍♀️🤣

ChillerKillerCroissant · 13/10/2020 13:49

Flowers pumpkin, you know where we are when you need us - we're thinking of you Flowers

Had a large coffee which has helped me to do a bit of tidying and dusting in the main room today. Ignoring one half of the room where DH has some stuff that he is going through to declutter and is doing a fantastic job of it too. Hoping for a tip trip later this week.

I should be working a few days this week so if I'm quiet don't worry, should be back to normal by the weekend! Approaching half-term here, another week to go.

Stilllivinginazoo · 13/10/2020 15:46

foxes will check that later.thank you
Hills/sing I believe a substantial number of fledglings get up and go cleared off on their hols together, and are contemplating due to covid quarantine rules whether to return to us or not....

Well fun day here
Sent lil zoo as school being pissy about authorising absences for her IBS pain.emailex head of learning and vented my frustration at how unsafe it actually us to expect a 12 year old to manage on 11/2 hours sleep and not consuming any water/food between waking at 5 and 430 pm.expectinh her to walk to and from school(best part an hour) and participate in all activities of school life
They email back come get her and book g.p app...
Triage rang and waiting for call back.pretty sure they will throw it back to school to limit hoursand they also need chase up paperwork for ASD assessment
She knows she should drink, her only reasoning is that "I just can't"

Aaaaaargh

So tada
Drop lil zoo
Shop
Wipe shop and put away
Flurry emails with school
Drop dd2
Bring home lil zoo
Hotspot front room
S+s
Make lunch

Ring g.p(in queue 45 minutes)
Explain reception why need app,she feels school issue but as lil zoo has had camhs referral she cannot deny access to advice or is deemed discriminating against MH..

Check with lil zoo my facts of situation are correct and write as bullet points

Message dd2 will have walk self home as doc could decide want to see her in which case would need leave immediately

Not done much else as awaiting callback and I find hard concentrate on things when waiting for a call

Lisette1940 · 13/10/2020 16:02

Poor DD zoo. That would be a very long school day when you aren't at the height of your superpowers.

Ta da: swish and swiped bathrooms, washed kitchen floor. Cleaned bedrooms and rotated washing.

To do: home bleurgh Hoover. Tesco shop online.

Also to do is an autumnal walk for well being 🍂🍂🍂🌿🌿🌿🎃🎃🎃🍂🌿🌿🎃 will bring D's as he's on the Tattie holiday two week break. Kids used to help farmers harvest tatties up here in days gone by at this time 🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔🥔

foxessocks · 13/10/2020 16:34

zoo that all sounds very frustrating , hope you've had the call back now at least!

Ta da
Finished work
Dh has hoovered upstairs
Cleaned bath
S&s bathroom
Sprayed round bath with mould remover and scrubbed off later
Cleaned ds windowsills and tops of Kallax , put bits away in boxes
Sorted some clothes out in spare room, some too small for ds already, some shoes just about right size so have put in porch for him to try
Updated food shop for tomorrow

I need to start doing the paper sorting, has anyone got any tips?? How do you organise yours? I have options of a 2 or 3 box files which eventually could go in spare room or I also have two large storage boxes on my downstairs bookshelf...and I keep changing my mind and moving stuff from one place to another which isn't actually helpful 🤦‍♀️😂
