Fledglings Flying Frightfully into October

A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

TheUpholder · 12/10/2020 08:15

Well done on digging yourself out Tidy. Music and podcasts sound like a good idea.

Hope today goes well for DH Sing

Sympathy for the leak Mc. I hate coming across house issues. Hope you can get it sorted ASAP.

However would we manage without peppa pig Bramble?

My DM had that huge pram for us Wellies, wish she’d kept it (although not exactly easy to store!) They don’t make them like they used to! I’ve never had roasted pepper on my Sunday lunch but I’m thinking it could work.

Zoo yet again your ta da list has amazed me and made me want to spring into action.

Good attempt at the list despite others ruining your plans Hills

Ta Das so far:
✅ beds made
✅ s & s downstairs
✅ DW emptied
✅ LOL on
✅ weigh in. Wished I hadn’t bothered.
✅ cats and people fed
✅ mince out of freezer for bolognese

To do:
🙄 get me and DD dressed
🙄 tidy, dust and hoover upstairs
🙄 Proper bathroom clean
🙄 ironing
🙄 work and nursery bags packed
🙄 soup made for lunch, bolognese for tea, overnight oats prepped for next few days
🙄 exercise

DD has her MMR today Sad, and I need to book her flu spray. I’ve also promised a trip to the park and some painting. Best get moving...

MogTheShriekyCat · 12/10/2020 08:18

Morning fledglings. I doubt I'll ever be able to keep up with all the posts!

School run in 15 minutes then into a fresh week of hell at work...(I love it really, but Mondays are always intense)

HillsBesideTheSea · 12/10/2020 08:38

Some mornings start with the words FUCK! ITs 8:20!!!!! Shit.

and i was planning on being so organised too.

Bugger.

This week is going to be intense to start with (hopefully settling down to a sensible level later).

Have a good one Fledglings!`

Oh dear Monday mornings.
Just wondering if they were scammers wellies.
What a morning!

Hills
Have you recovered yet?

foxessocks · 12/10/2020 10:47

Everyone is having one of those days I see!! Glad it's not just me, dd forgot to take her banana into school with her and I wasn't allowed to hand it to the TA on the door so she told me to find one of dd friends and give it to them. So there was me and ds desperately trying to find someone we recognised to give it to all of the ones I know well had gone in already 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

My hip is also really hurting again and its slowing me down considerably. And I'm meant to be playing badminton tonight not sure that's going to happen.

I've got my teeth whitening stuff in so no tea or coffee for me Sad (but yay to white teeth I guess! I wanted to do it so can't complain can I 😂)

Ta das
Washing hung up
More washing on
Dishwasher on
Rubbish out
Bins out
Sides wiped

Plus I'm also working all day

Hope everyone's Monday improves and if not have a Brew on my behalf!

Lisette1940 · 12/10/2020 11:02

🏡 started home bleurgh. Sheets changed yesterday. To do: empty bins, swish and swipe, quick Hoover, ironing. Also DH birthday cake to make and his favourite dinner. Am working all day so will have to squeeze in cakebaking. Luckily it's just a Victoria sponge, his fav. Must air house as well. Leaving zone cleaning to tomorrow when there's more time.

SingToTheSky · 12/10/2020 12:15

I hope everyone’s day is improving! Mine was ok so far despite a bit of a rush to get to nursery - clearly clothes being ready doesn’t make much difference if Cagletini is still asleep at 8.15! 🤦‍♀️

Meeting my assessment partner was good, we ended up chatting for an hour 😂 her house looked beautifully tidy and coordinated. Haven’t got much HE work done of course but wasn’t expecting much.

Now at the park post nursery as usual despite the rain... DS slipped on the slide and now has a split lip 🤦‍♀️

DH has had the procedure thing, all he’s told me so far is it “did not go well” 😣 but then he has been discharged (home in an hour) so it can’t have been a total disaster at least

SingToTheSky · 12/10/2020 17:52

Sigh. It begins. Just had phone call from nursery. Cagletini needs to self isolate until Wednesday next week as they’ve had a positive case at the setting. Apparently it’s just her who needs to SI not the rest of us. Luckily we don’t need the childcare for work!

DH had an awful reaction to the injections, crying shaking etc - not like him at all. The doctor was apparently really shocked by the amount of pain it caused, and said it may indicate that the procedure isn’t going to be successful 😣 he’s got a diary to fill out for a week.

EerilyDeleted · 12/10/2020 19:08

Oh no Sing on both fronts. Your poor DH Flowers

OP posts:
foxessocks · 12/10/2020 19:10

Oh sing what a day you guys have had Sad hope your dh is okay

Ta das
Finished work
Tidied living room
Tidied ds bedroom
School run
Got dd to tidy her room
Put some washing away
Hung more washing up
Dishwasher back on
Tidied after dinner
Swept kitchen floor
Sent message to family member whose husband has been very unwell

Decided not to go to badminton, my hip is actually feeling a bit better but I've had a headache all day so don't much feel like going anywhere anyway.

I was thinking of doing some pilates stretches for my hip but I seem to have found the sofa now Grin

Lisette1940 · 12/10/2020 20:12

Oh no sing. I'm so sorry to read that. Your poor dp. I hope Cagletini remains well.

Foxes Best to rest if your head is sore. Gives the hip time to recuperate too.

Ta da: bins, room tidy, ironing, opened windows, made cake, cleaned fridge, rotated the never ending laundry, tidied Ds's wardrobe. Worked from home.

Am thinking of a walk if not raining too much.

AlexTheHalloweenCat · 12/10/2020 20:26

Sing Hope your DH is ok and hope your little one is ok too.

I love reading the thread, I'm struggling to keep up. Hope everyone had a good day. It's turning into autumn and I'm missing the summer. I feel like hibernating which isn't doing wonders for my not so healthy eating. Still trying to shift all the house/DIY jobs that I never did when we moved in, exciting things like polishing the tarnished door knobs (apparently flour, salt and vinegar works, and lemon and salt makes them shiny).

Bowerbird5 · 12/10/2020 20:27

Oh dear sing what a shame on both counts. Your ass. Partner probably tidied up because she knew you were coming. I usually sprint clean if know someone is coming.

Wellies that’s good it was just strange not to go from yours to there’s.

Foxesthat seems strange. Surely better to take it rather than have you wandering around playground looking for someone. Parents are kept at the gate at my (old) workplace. Back like the old days when I first went there.

Ta da
Stripped bed.
Sheets and pillow cases in 2x LOL
Made bed up with ones ironed last week.
Collected up laundry from yesterday for basket but didn’t wash it as weather 😝blah.
Fed hens.
Cleaned basin and loo.
Cleaned mirror
Cleaned shower screen and tray.
Washed up after lunch.
Loaded dishwasher for night.
Researched Christmas present for DS1
Ditto for DS2

We are in the medium plan so far but surrounded by high level east and south and Scotland to the north. So it may change but means we can go to collect the tiles tomorrow yeah!

HillsBesideTheSea · 12/10/2020 20:54

Sorry to hear that DP is doing so bad with his procedure. Sing and Hope that Cagletini gets through the isolation well and healthy

Today has been insane. and I was so tired i dumped all the pasta into the sauce that I am allergic to. So fed everyone else and trying to figure out what to eat for tea

Forgive me if i dump and crash. Tomo is a really early start with a crap ton to be done before the end of the day. Roll on wednesday and a planned day of paperwork.

ta da
dry work tea towels
fit a week's worth of work into a short day to enable cover this week
hour and half over time due to above
Finish parcelling up parcels
Swear at forgetting card for one - it got send will have to send a message instead
take to post office
pick up fish tank water
drive hour to big supermarket for clothes and food shop
stop at hobby craft for picture frame and felt for stair basket
ring hospital for pre-op check list completion
make tea
unpack shopping - be delighted ds pleased with new clothes and school shoes. He has strong feelings about his shoes and clothes
Shower and change clothes from being outside.

Should probably do more but it is an early start for the pre-op covid test so i think i might just curl up and try for an early night. Then i need to make sure i have prepped all my allergy friendly food incase I don't get negative and end up stuck in isolation in my room. The people here would not know what they could feed me without running the risk of an anaphlaxtic shock reaction. So it is better they just take a tub out of the freezer, ping in it the microwave. And I am rather fond of white bean and ham soup --no one else likes it so i dont have to share WinkGrin

Not much happening on flying front today.
Ta Da:
🎉Morning routine
🎉Hoovered downstairs
🎉Finished sweater for DH
🎉Finally sorted the button for DH's shirt. A 5 min job and I have no idea why I procrastinated on it for ages.

Plumber has been today and no leak was found. Good news I guess. But still no explanation for the musty smell or why the wet patch on the carpet is not drying out. Will shampoo the carpets this weekend (with one of those rented RugDoctor contraptions), then will finally buy the washing hoover for general upkeep.

Lisette1940 · 12/10/2020 22:36

That's a puzzle MC 😕

HauntingHazel · 13/10/2020 05:10

So much to catch up on!
zoo we do eat pumpkin, but from a can! I can't be bothered to try to salvage the meat of the pumpkin.
I will post pictures after carving and painting the pumpkins, as well as my nails, when I get around to doing them 🤬
I was off work today due to it being Columbus day, it went entirely too fast for my liking. But I did get some things done.

Ta Das:
🕷 3 LOLs
👻 2 batches of truffles made - dark chocolate and peppermint dark chocolate
🕷 Skyped mum
👻 Halloween decorations brought in from the garage
🕷 Put out some of our decorations - in the house. We haven't done our outside decorations yet or our cobwebs
👻 Took DS to football ⚽️ practice, last game is tomorrow night
🕷 Went out to eat and spent way too much money. It was good though.
👻 Cleaned up kitchen
🕷 Rotated DW
👻 Clean clothes put away, other than the ironing pile

Finally sitting with my feet up. This evening I saved the dog from choking on her treat and threw away the rest of them as that was at least the 3rd time this week.

mc that's a little worrying about the water, are there any pipes under the carpet right there? Hopefully it's nothing but that you also find out where it's from.
Sing Hopefully cagletini is okay. A bit weird that the rest of you don't have to self isolate though. Is it possible DH can pull through and the treatment actually works?
I know I missed a lot of you on here so 👻👋 to everyone
