Hello and welcome to the (slightly early) August Fledgling Thread! Join us for housework chat and a ridiculous amount of non housework chat too.

We follow (supposedly) the FlyLady system, which helps you gradually build up a set of routines. This month I won’t be putting regular links on, but there will be regular references to whatever the current zone and daily focus is. Please ask if you need any further info!

Here are some links to get you started (but don’t sign up for the emails as you’ll get inundated!)

www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/ - a set of little tasks to gradually add to your day - some are a bit twee so pick and choose what you want!

www.flylady.net/c/sp.php#missions - this updates weekly with a set of five specific tasks for the weekly zone - worth checking for ideas! I will try and remember to remind us what zone we are in. It changes on a Sunday and we will be starting with Zone 1, the entrance/porch/hallway, and dining room if you have one.

www.flylady.net/c/lp.php - this contains links for most other things so is a good place to check if you don’t know where to start

It looks like the focus of the month for August is LAUNDRY - getting into the habit of a full load washed, dried and away each day.

Also I was bored a while back so I put together a little glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.
KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done. Oops.

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash.

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

Cherry Waves - borne of a typo of “cheery waves” this is now - to the extent my autocorrect just changed it again - often how we sign off. You may also see it in emoji form! 🍒👋🙋🏻 (😷 for socially distanced waves!).

Haughty Corner - this is from a typo of the naughty corner - the virtual hangout spot where we hide from housework and eat virtual snacks.

Future Friend or FF - the idea (apparently coming from The Organised Mum Method) of doing something to make life easier for yourself in future. Includes things like choosing clothes for the next day, getting bags ready etc.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally, for any Fledglings old or new who are trying to lose weight in lockdown, here’s our new body clutter banishing thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weight_loss_chat/3975886-Body-Clutter-Be-Gone-The-Fledglings-Weightloss-Thread?pg=1

I’ll stop waffling there. Welcome one and all, a huge thank you to KTCluck for steering us through July while also working, and away we go for August! 🍒👋

Howl it’s not the first time my dream has come true. It was getting a bit scary actually as it wasn’t always nice things.
At the moment she refuses to sell her designs to a company but I think she may have to at some stage if she wants to earn a living. She has taken her website down at the moment while she is travelling. She has printed on fabric and made scarves, teatowels and table runners and would like to develop more and produce wallpaper and curtain fabric. She was interviewed for a work placement for a company that produces fabric for John Lewis, Laura Ashley and others and they liked her designs but she didn’t have enough knowledge on marketing. The other two had lots of marketing but not creative. They didn’t take any and haven’t re advertised. I don’t think they thought it through enough.
It would have been good for her as she would get to travel to European business shows and the idea was that you would build your own product within the company getting the expertise from people there.

This thread has really taken off. I will pop back if I get through to the end before dropping off.

Ta Das today

Gave the kitchen a good clean.
I have done everything except the dresser. I didn’t do drawers as they don’t really need it but did the shelves, wiped all the cupboards, window sill and window, Everhot, washed the floor. Table cleared.

Vacuumed through including down the sides of the sofa and under cushions.
Washed the sitting room window outside and the dining room too.
Cleaned the bathroom.
Cleaned out the hens and gave them new straw. Washed feed tray and water box and re filled.
Put away some clothes but not all as I have to iron some and I ignored the others.

🚀sorted DS’ hair

❌any form of studying 😳🤦‍♀️

DD1 is watching an episode of anime and then I’m hoping to sleep. Must obviously study tomorrow, get DD1 to do chores first thing, and book her next dance classes! Night all.

We are home! Had a really lovely time, the DC all played so nicely and we announced to everyone that we were expecting another boy. Had a really great night. Will catch up tomorrow

Bowerbird5 · 15/08/2020 23:11

Now I have read through I forgotten who said what. Sorry.
It has been lovelyhere. DH got up early to go walking. He did six today and didn’t get back until 5pm. I did lots without him here. I could have done more but I didn’t want to miss what might be our last good day. I am attempting to train the hens at the moment to come out so I can pen them in a movable pen.after three days they are starting to get the hang of it. Getting them back in isn’t as easy.

Sing sorry your friend didn’t make it.
Chic your chairs are similar to mine. We seem to be missing one. Great photo.

I’ve enjoyed my holiday staycation. I’ve read two books, been for a drive to the coast with DH. DS2 came over to show us his new car.

I’m tired but has severe restless leg syndrome and i shouldn’t have had any peppers. And I’m too bloody hot.

KCC - sauce. I do like a sauce! Favourite hmmm not sure. Heinz tomato sauce probably because it is versatile. Homemade pasta sauce tomato and basil. I’m growing basil from seed just now. Sweet sauce got to be chocolate.

For the cream cheese 😫 I can’t have it any more. And chilli sauce fans. One of my cousins takes it to Jacob Join. Two tubs cream cheese put into a round dish. When you get there turn it on to a large plate pour a bottle of chilli sauce over and surround by Ritz crackers. Quick, easy and everyone loves it.
Right need to go to sleep.

TheUpholder · 16/08/2020 08:37

Urgh. Feeing rather flat and unmotivated today. Yesterday went a bit pear-shaped as DD morphed into a tantruming banshee for no apparent reason. By the time she calmed down I wasn’t really in the mood for drinks at my DSis’s but I whacked a smile on and spruced myself up. Had an enjoyable hour or so but gin was going down far too easily and DD was shattered so we thought it best to leave earlier than planned. I’m pleased we did as I would be feeling even less motivated with a hangover.

Ta da:
Drank tea and ate toast in bed brought by DH (who thankfully got up with DD)

To do:
Nowt really. Stick an LOL on. We have zero plans for today.

Do I a) get up, dressed and do something, or b) wallow in my pjs a bit longer?

Zoo’s impressive Sunday morning ta da list is making me lean towards a. Thanks Zoo. I think Grin

You definitely deserve some time off Hazel.

Pup is gorgeous Double

Stilllivinginazoo · 16/08/2020 09:03

I need get laundry under control as piles are reaching critical again in towel and pant departments...

TooStressyTooMessy · 16/08/2020 10:46

Morning all. Just going to jump back in with cherry waves to all and some BrewCake for the naughty corner.

Waiting to pick up DD2 from gymnastics. DH at home with DD1 so I was able to sit in the car and do a calendar check. I have ordered myself some calendar stickers to make it a little less depressing when I put in the details of zoom calls etc.

Trying to get uniform etc ready for back to school. I think my vision of sorting it all out in one go with some good on the telly and wine was hopelessly unrealistic for Covid times so I have resigned myself to doing a few minutes at a time.

Weather coolish and rainy here. It is so different across the UK now isn’t it?

I would wallow KT Smile.

Mc3209 · 16/08/2020 11:34

Morning everyone!
Zoo crumpets for breakfast here too ☺️ i am not even going to try and match your Ta Da at the moment, I am still drifting in and out of bed..
Upholder I'd say go for option b) 🥰 there will be plenty of time to do flying later, that's what I keep telling myself anyway!
Stressy what are the calendar stickers? Sounds like something I will need..

Ta Da so far:

That's it. Then I went back to bed.

But for now, lazy times.

Bowerbird5 · 16/08/2020 12:59

zoo you made me lol😂 re scoutcat. I miss DdS cat dreadfully but I am not getting another.
You have done loads this morning. I am dreading doing my bedroom. It has been done for...I can’t actually remember and involves moving heavy furniture too. I was hoping to do it this summer but washing the curtains will be as far as it goes. I love the paper that is on and haven’t seen anything I like as much. It needs to go with the curtains because I made an old quilt covered and cushion with the same fabric. I have another colour in winter that works with it too. It is like a hessian or linen look in a lavender colour. It is so restful. Unfortunately LA stopped making it. It is really marked on one wall as the stone needs re- pointing. Dan was supposed to come this summer but he is behind because of vivid. It isn’t worth doing until he has finished. By then I might have decluttered boudoir 🥳🤣
It must be awful trying to do it on your own. I think DH helped last time.
I’m not surprised you are tired. Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day!
Sound horrendous having all those workman in at once. We have never had more than two or three. They all work together sometimes so are on good terms with each other. Sounds like you were really unlucky. Breaking things is not on.

I do think the kids could help a bit more when you are attempting decorating on your own. Putting books back etc couldn’t it be their job. Explain to them that they will need these skills for when they have their own house.

Toostressy good to see you. Are you finding it difficult with name changes I am still trying to work out a few? Hmm wine. I might have had a drop too much during the week. One glass too many. Back on the Pimms now as DH bought me another bottle😁

Need to think of something to cook today. I wish I had got something out of the freezer it would have been ok to have the oven on for a roast.
I want crumpets now!

Been to Mass this morning online.

Lazy day on Sundays though I am tempted to do the large pile of ironing. I bet DH has put towels in the basket. Why can’t they take them to the bathroom or airing cupboard. Towels have no business staying in the laundry basket that is mostly ironing. I did sheets a second time this week as it was so hot without being able to open the window that I felt like changing the bed again. The sheets are cotton so need ironed.

Pointy stick needed please whoever has it.

Finished my book yesterday. That was two this week. I have never read a series of books before and I quite like it except I haven’t got the next two. I decided I would have one hour reading after two hours of flying. It is working well I don’t feel guilty sitting in the garden.

TheUpholder · 16/08/2020 13:31

Well I went for option a initially.

✅ beds made
✅ Dw set off
✅ LOL in
✅ clean washing put away
✅ tidied hallway
✅ s & s
✅ showered and dressed

We took DD out on her scooter for an hour and bought sausage sandwiches for lunch.

I have now resorted to option b Grin. The problem is because I’m in a busy tourist area there are so many people wandering past all day. All outdoorsy folk with their kids, beach is packed with families grabbing life by the horns and I feel very guilty when they look in the window and we are wrapped in a blanket watching peppa pig Blush. I love where we live and we are very lucky but it does make it harder to enjoy the odd wallow Grin

We’ll get moving again in a bit - going to visit DGM later while DH does us a roast. Grey and miserable here too, and it feels like we need a good storm to clear the air. I’ve got my last day off tomorrow so leaving my usual Sunday prep until tomorrow. I think washing up after the roast and my normal Sunday night planning will be the extent of any remaining flying today.

Just realised I forgot KCC earlier. I will also eat any biscuit, but I do love those giant gooey caramel/Maltese/smarties etc cookies that you get in the paper bags. Yum.

An hour reading to two flying sounds like a good ratio Bower

Too calendar stickers you say. Now that sounds like something I need.

Hope you’ve enjoyed you lazy morning mc

Trousers are overrated Zoo

SingToTheSky · 16/08/2020 14:01

Afternoon all. Got out for a bit this morning so didn’t post, although being out turned out to be more stress than it was worth and I am now tired, grumpy and unfocused!

🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄
Today is Sunday so do something spirit renewing. We are now in zone 3... that’s the bathroom right? Plus another room of your choice.

KCC I saw this last night and it made me laugh, about sleeping funny.

Afternoon all! The DC slept great and didn’t wake up until 8:30!. So I’m feeling very well rested. However, I’ve been holding off on the flying lately and it has left me with lots to do (see pic). So busy day ahead, will be back again later.

dancing I’ve only done boys shoes so can’t help you there, but my sisters have similar to the ones THAT sent a link for and they last them a while.

sing are you looking for bath toys? Or just fun shower gel and stuff?

That’s a lovely pic double!

That’s a great list meg!

bower that’s incredible that your dreams come true. I’m sorry some aren’t good though. I do hope DD sells her stuff soon it sounds lovely.

Well done on that list zoo!

August already?! Time keeps flying like the Fledglings!
SingToTheSky · 16/08/2020 15:12

Hazel the game of things looks awesome! Something that I reckon even DD1 would happily play - I might get that for Christmas. Can I just check, when it comes to the guessing, presumably one person reads them out and the others guess, so handwriting doesn’t give it away?

Howl any bath related recommendations would be great please :)

I love that dipping idea bower thanks - mmmm ritz crackers, I think they were one of my cravings in one of the Caglet pregnancies. I need to look up a satay recipe as I’ve seen some that include sweet chilli sauce.

I’m so sleepy Confused

Oh Zoo that’s lovely. What gorgeous roses. I bet hammering the fuck out of those nails was pretty therapeutic Grin

Howl it’s amazing how quickly mess builds up when you take a break isn’t it. Nothing a few short bursts won’t sort out though and we all need a break now and then.

Meg you have earned that red wine today. I’m
indulging in a rather nice white which I definitely did not earn. Although I did do a bit of ironing. I suppose that counts.

Sing I forgot to say, we just use good old Matey bubble bath for DD. She loves the mermaid one and it does make the best bubbles.
