August already?! Time keeps flying like the Fledglings!

Hello and welcome to the (slightly early) August Fledgling Thread! Join us for housework chat and a ridiculous amount of non housework chat too.

We follow (supposedly) the FlyLady system, which helps you gradually build up a set of routines. This month I won’t be putting regular links on, but there will be regular references to whatever the current zone and daily focus is. Please ask if you need any further info!

Here are some links to get you started (but don’t sign up for the emails as you’ll get inundated!)

www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/ - a set of little tasks to gradually add to your day - some are a bit twee so pick and choose what you want!

www.flylady.net/c/sp.php#missions - this updates weekly with a set of five specific tasks for the weekly zone - worth checking for ideas! I will try and remember to remind us what zone we are in. It changes on a Sunday and we will be starting with Zone 1, the entrance/porch/hallway, and dining room if you have one.

www.flylady.net/c/lp.php - this contains links for most other things so is a good place to check if you don’t know where to start

It looks like the focus of the month for August is LAUNDRY - getting into the habit of a full load washed, dried and away each day.

Also I was bored a while back so I put together a little glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.
KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done. Oops.

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash.

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

Cherry Waves - borne of a typo of “cheery waves” this is now - to the extent my autocorrect just changed it again - often how we sign off. You may also see it in emoji form! 🍒👋🙋🏻 (😷 for socially distanced waves!).

Haughty Corner - this is from a typo of the naughty corner - the virtual hangout spot where we hide from housework and eat virtual snacks.

Future Friend or FF - the idea (apparently coming from The Organised Mum Method) of doing something to make life easier for yourself in future. Includes things like choosing clothes for the next day, getting bags ready etc.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally, for any Fledglings old or new who are trying to lose weight in lockdown, here’s our new body clutter banishing thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weight_loss_chat/3975886-Body-Clutter-Be-Gone-The-Fledglings-Weightloss-Thread?pg=1

I’ll stop waffling there. Welcome one and all, a huge thank you to KTCluck for steering us through July while also working, and away we go for August! 🍒👋

Sing happy birthday to DS!

I love cinnamon too, especially at this time of year. I wish I could eat cinnamon rolls still as they are so tasty. I'll have to find a recipe for some that I can eat 😋

MC I find all my recipes on Pinterest, pin.it/4V2TEV1 this is my favourite white cake recipe. I have also made this cake, it has a recipe for Ganache on it too. The 2nd time I made it I didn't melt the chocolate all the way so it was lumpy, but if you follow the recipe and melt them all the way it is really good (and very rich) pin.it/CCUIOTM

Evenin’ all. Feeling very sleepy thanks to the early wake up call. Bowling was fun and we did end up having Pizza Hut :o some things never change (except all the weird virus related rules of course)

DS is busy with his bestie and I’ve been keeping myself busy with more home ed planning.

TaDa
did the ironing!
sewed on a button
washed up
had two glasses of champagne on number 27's lawn (he's had a novel published)

Yesterday I decluttered half a bag of dried cranberries, half of the bag of pecans S2 didn't want to use in his baking, the scrappy bits of shop-bought pastry from when flour was hard to buy, and the last of the tin of golden syrup (for popcorn it's easier to use the squeezy bottle). It was delicious, but would have been better if I'd chopped the pecans. The American recipes all used them as halves, but they tended to form a crust on the top and should have been mixed in more with the sugar-butter-egg filling.

The last couple of weeks we've played Mah-Jongg on Sunday evenings (S2 has become fond of Family Tradition) so I imagine we'll do that again.

ToDo
lay table
wash up
take sandwich stuff out of freezer

ToMorrow
make S2's sandwiches (he's off out romancing again)
email administrator (yes that was on Friday's list)
clean something

MrsTidyHouse · 30/08/2020 21:11

Conquered the laundry pile, tried to come up with a better rota. Picked a jug of brambles. Will mix with a blob of plain yogurt for a healthy snack. Very heavy head cold, which is threatening to settle on my chest. Off to my bed now.

Hazel thank you, I will look that up!
Meg that's quite a list, very impressive.
Tidy I hope you feel better soon.
Merry you've reminded me I need to fix a button on DH shirt. Was supposed to this ages ago..
Sing happy birthday to DS! Sounds like you had a fabulous day 🙂

Bowerbird5 · 30/08/2020 23:19

Belated happy birthday to DS Sing.

Merry I have also been mending.Putting new elastic in three skirts. No. 1 almost done but more complicated than it looked as it had been sewn in a couple of times. Going to try in daylight outside tomorrow as it is navy and hard to see. It is old but will do me for around the house in winter. My mum used to play MahJongg when she was a young nurse. She never taught us.😟 glasses of champagne very nice😁

MrsTidy I hope you feel better in the morning.
Hazel those cakes look delicious. I have Pinterest but have never looked at recipes...until today😆
Zoo yeah I had pizza in Bristol with hummus on but on top instead of cheese it was delicious. I have made pizza at Pizza Express and they put more tomato on theirs than this one had. It was a bit dry and we were at DS2s so no chance of any in his cupboard. Beer yes, pizza topping no! I might some next week. I used to be good at making them.

2Princes hope you are ok. I trust you are keeping busy with those darling boys.

Meg great list you must be exhausted. I hope Megahound is ok.
Mmmcurry sounds lovely.
We had frittata.

I have done nothing except make my bed, fed chickens twice, fed husband twice, a bit of repairing and dried up and swept the kitchen.
DH asked if I wanted to go for a drive today so we went right up in the hills and onto the moors. We’ve been in three counties in one afternoon😁 fantastic views as it was fairly clear and it was dry. We were going to take a flask but DH thought it wouldn’t be such a good idea on account of what goes in must come out🤣 so I took two club biscuits.
We didn’t stop but we went through some lovely little villages.

Right 🍒👋 to everyone. I am going to read and then sleep.

SingToTheSky · 31/08/2020 01:30

Ta Das:

🍁 3 LOLs.

🍂 Front room cupboard sorted out, space made on a shelf to put all my nail stuff together.

🌻 Sideboard sorted out, taking my nail stuff out of there. Moved a few things around and took out seasonal decorations that need to go into the garage.

🍁 Put newspaper down in the sideboard to put the shoes on, to get them off the floor. DH still refuses to put his everyday shoes in there, but he's okay with his 2nd pair going in the sideboard.

🍂 Threw away a big bin bag full of random crap we no longer want or need. Most of it was broken controllers, keyboard, empty boxes from replacement controllers and phones we got back in March. I also threw away a bunch of nail polishes that had seen better days, I would guess at least 20 bottles. I did hold onto some although I really just do gel now.

🌻 Got a big box started for our yard sale. Still not sure if we'll be able to have one this year now, if not I'm sure I'll find a tonne more between now and then. As I'm setting up the yard sale I take a look at the stuff to see if I really want to sell it or just donate/ throw away the items.

I did find 4 throw cushions that I was going to cover, but I've wanted to do that project for about 10 years now and still haven't done any of them. I put them in the box. There's nothing wrong with them but I'm tired of having no space and not finishing projects.

🍁 I also cut DSs hair! It has been getting long and he likes it really short. I didn't go as short this time, but it'll do for a couple of weeks before I can get him in to have a haircut. I am now itchy all over, we did cut his hair outside, with the wind blowing, and I'm sure I got covered with his little prickly hairs!

Stilllivinginazoo · 31/08/2020 06:17

tidy hope you feel better today
Meg great list.fingers X furry boy eye is ok
Hazel fabdecluttering!
Sing bless him, sounds like a lovely birthday

Been up a while,I was cold and rather go back to sleep I thought get some cleaning done in peace!will post tada when fix zoolets breakfast

Lisette1940 · 31/08/2020 07:38

We have cleared the garage! The old paint tins need to go to a different recycling point so that's for another day. We have a plan of action now for the front of the house. Sadly my back garden furniture has rotted - one chair and the garden bench are okay. I ordered a patio bistro set which I can put on the cleaned patio. I am really looking forward to sitting out with a cup of tea. Have a great week fledglings.

Stilllivinginazoo · 31/08/2020 07:49

Good work Lisette

Tada
Fed cats
Harpic lav
Wash on

Kitchen

Wipe sills
Clean tiling

I just noticed I was so concentrating on remembering personals,I didn't tell you why I pop in mid cleaning...a hot air balloon was literally basket level house across the street.i could see the people in it and the whoosh of fire alerted me to them being so low!!we are on a hill and they set sail back into the clouds as drifted down the street.view must've been beautiful.bet the set sail at sunrise and were dawn chasing

TheUpholder · 31/08/2020 07:51

Hi everyone. I’ve lost two posts since Saturday. Third time lucky hopefully Hmm.

We’ve had a bit of a laid back weekend to be honest, but it’s been nice.

Saturday:
✅ downstairs dusted, hoovered, mopped and tired
✅ downstairs loo cleaned
✅ couple of LOLs including DD’s bedding
✅ DD’s bed remade
DH and I headed out for an early tea while DD was with DM, and finished the day with a glass of wine

Sunday:
✅ DD’s bedroom, our room and dressing room tidied
✅ upstairs dusted and hoovered
✅ bathroom cleaned
✅ DD’s feet measured. One pair of sale boots I’d put away now fit, but possibly not for long. Tried to order a bigger pair and some wellies. Can’t find anything I like in her size. I’m finding my usual Go-tos for basic like next and Asda have much less choice than normal and seem to have lots out of stock in the size I need. May have to brave the shops Hmm
✅ assisted with the roast, cleaned up afterwards
✅ a walk after lunch to tire DD out
✅ started my autumn planning (my planner has a goals section every 3 months). 3 main aims are back roads healthy weight, better self care (eyebrows are wild Blush) and getting small bits of DIY done that we’ve been putting off for a while. Should probably get somebody to look at the wet patches appearing in the hallway that we’ve been ignoring for months years I suspect it’s from the roof.

Today:
📌drag self up
📌 weigh in Envy
📌morning routine
📌strip and wash our bedding
📌ironing
We are visiting relatives this afternoon and will hopefully get some sun in their garden

It was Howl that discovered the lovely Christmas planner I think Meg. I just bought it, because I have no willpower

Seems like there’s been lots of DIY stuff going on. That’s still flying in my book.

Glad DS enjoyed his birthday Sing. We do cards and presents in our bed, breakfast and dinner of choice for the birthday person, plus a birthday banner. I decorated my first proper cake for DD’s second birthday and I was quite proud of it (a lion), but we have a family friend who does fabulous cakes and she loves doing them so I left the last one to her.

Welcome back mog

Hope you’re feeling better today Foxes

TheUpholder · 31/08/2020 07:52

Well done Lisette Star

Wow Zoo! That’s not something you see every day!

Stilllivinginazoo · 31/08/2020 08:49

up my eyebrows now resemble that of an unkept meadow
Asda cancelled loads stuff it had ordered (after half was made) and refuse pay given covid drop off sales.our local Asda George is very sparse at mo,even school wear is not to usual abundance levels

Now to go buy milk as D's finished and said nothing, now wants more

Today's plan
Whip house into vague semblance of shape
Menu plan and food shop
Plan D's school work given LEA still not provided provision for beg sept, and we have no input from school to be challenged until paperwork's singed mid month
As it's cooler I may bake today.noticed some fruit purees languishing in fridge from dd2 brace days,so may use those as sub for mash banana and make a loaf

MogTheSleepyCat · 31/08/2020 10:18

Morning all, there are some great lists on here.

Zoo you are just as productive and as early-rising as I remember!

Jigolo - this might sound weird, and possibly offensive (but not meant to be!) - did you used to post under a different name that involved an animals hairy behind?! (I never like to state old names explicitly in case the poster doesn't want to be identified). She was also incredibly skilled in the DIY department!

Up I haven't had my eyebrows threaded since pre-lockdown, hopefully will get them done today. Its such a simple thing, but always makes me look and feel so much better once done.

Lisette nice work on the garage, we sorted ours a few weeks ago and got rid of so much rubbish - God knows why we kept most of it!

MrsTidy are you feeling better? Well done on the laundry conquest.

Sing glad your DS had a good birthday. Has anyone volunteered for the September thread yet?

Lisette1940 · 31/08/2020 10:20

Thanks all for support re garage and garden. I am not a natural outdoorsy person and I think with family issues over the last few years we have neglected the garden in order to keep everything else going. I did not have much mental energy. We have some indoor work that needs doing but with the pandemic I'm holding off and concentrating on the garden.

I have to look to see if we have a bank holiday. My workplace works through bank holidays!

Lisette1940 · 31/08/2020 10:22

Nah - next holiday is end of September locally.

MogTheSleepyCat · 31/08/2020 10:32

I have rummaged through my laptop and found my 'Flylady Thread Leader Master Document' so I can do the September thread if nobody else wants to?

Thanks, I'm feeling much better but now my leg has stopped working Confused I'm hobbling around the house, I think it's a pinched nerve (from my googling!)

Just made a plum and ginger cake 😋 but decided that was quite enough standing up so dinner will be a takeaway! (Dh would have cooked but he's painting and wants to get on)

Did a bit of work and might do some more shortly. Dishwasher has been on multiple times.. washing is out. I just need to put some things out on my doorstep for the food bank (we have a new local food delivery which will also collect for the food bank thought that's such a good idea!) , put some laundry away. Dh hoovered and dusted whole house yesterday thank goodness.

Feel like I've missed such a lot on the thread recently I will really try and keep up, problem is I'm always on my phone and I can't scroll back easily so sorry if I've missed major goings on!
