Hello and welcome to the (slightly early) August Fledgling Thread! Join us for housework chat and a ridiculous amount of non housework chat too.

We follow (supposedly) the FlyLady system, which helps you gradually build up a set of routines. This month I won’t be putting regular links on, but there will be regular references to whatever the current zone and daily focus is. Please ask if you need any further info!

Here are some links to get you started (but don’t sign up for the emails as you’ll get inundated!)

www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/ - a set of little tasks to gradually add to your day - some are a bit twee so pick and choose what you want!

www.flylady.net/c/sp.php#missions - this updates weekly with a set of five specific tasks for the weekly zone - worth checking for ideas! I will try and remember to remind us what zone we are in. It changes on a Sunday and we will be starting with Zone 1, the entrance/porch/hallway, and dining room if you have one.

www.flylady.net/c/lp.php - this contains links for most other things so is a good place to check if you don’t know where to start

It looks like the focus of the month for August is LAUNDRY - getting into the habit of a full load washed, dried and away each day.

Also I was bored a while back so I put together a little glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.
KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done. Oops.

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash.

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

Cherry Waves - borne of a typo of “cheery waves” this is now - to the extent my autocorrect just changed it again - often how we sign off. You may also see it in emoji form! 🍒👋🙋🏻 (😷 for socially distanced waves!).

Haughty Corner - this is from a typo of the naughty corner - the virtual hangout spot where we hide from housework and eat virtual snacks.

Future Friend or FF - the idea (apparently coming from The Organised Mum Method) of doing something to make life easier for yourself in future. Includes things like choosing clothes for the next day, getting bags ready etc.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally, for any Fledglings old or new who are trying to lose weight in lockdown, here’s our new body clutter banishing thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weight_loss_chat/3975886-Body-Clutter-Be-Gone-The-Fledglings-Weightloss-Thread?pg=1

I’ll stop waffling there. Welcome one and all, a huge thank you to KTCluck for steering us through July while also working, and away we go for August! 🍒👋

So sorry some of you are facing more lockdown. I’ve not seen the latest announcements but from what I’m seeing on MN it’s all a bit alarming. I wrote a list last night of things I’d like to try and do to prepare a bit more for a second wave, not just medically but in terms of possible panic buying phase etc. It was such a blur the first time round as when we actually went into lockdown the others were just recovering from ?virus and I was still barely awake :o

I’m pleased I was brave and made it to the pub. Hardly anyone here but I’ll still book online for when I meet friends here as it saves time with the tracing etc. Walking here felt truly tropical meg it’s oppressively hot! 🥵

Thank you sing for the great intro to August and many, many thanks for the thread leading in July from KT.

I woke up at 10 this morning and have been playing catchup all day. arghh.

Currently hiding in the naughty corner with a coffee and a virtual calorie free chocolate covered custard doughnut. You can't get those in real life!

SingToTheSky · 31/07/2020 15:16

Back from the pub. Random question for anyone with Disney+ - is Onward on there yet? I’ve just been browsing the cinema listings and it’s on there and cheap but we may get Disney+ soon. I’m not even that bothered about seeing it, I just want to do something vaguely normal with the Caglets!

Losses to kisses

Bowerbird5 · 31/07/2020 18:06

Hi everyone,
Than you KTC for leading July and Sing for leading August. Great start.

Feeling a lot better today and have had breakfast and lunch today the hollow stomach feeling has gone thank goodness and I lost a couple of pounds😀

Sing we just have normal telly. Disney channel must be awesome. A girl in village used to work at Disney and was in the Grand Parade. Her mum was Disney mad so much so that they bought a house in America so the letting paid for their fares x5 every year.

Can imagine getting confused by name changes unless obvious!

Yesterday I moved all the furniture bar the sofa and box ( can’t move it) and vacuumed and cleaned and dusted all of it.

Today I took every thing out of the inglenook and vacuumed and scrubbed the stone hearth.
Cleaned front door.
Washed up.
LOL and pegged out.
Vacuumed the hall and sitting room.

DH has been walking in the Lakes and still isn’t back.
Only visitors have been police.😳😲

HungryHazelEyes · 31/07/2020 18:08

dancing good to see you back on here. Don't worry about paying every day, enjoy those little ones.

Marta teething is a hard stage to get much done at all, don't be hard on yourself. It seems to go on forever, but it does go by eventually. Don't forget to have some "me time" as well.

zoo I'm really hoping it is just a phase, although it has been going on for a few months now, of not a year.

Meg your sewing shelving looks very neat!

I actually have a ta da from this morning:

🤬 1 LOL put in the washer.

I'm curious to see if my DC do anything with that today, I'm expecting to have to move it to the dryer after work.

If all the chores aren't done for the entire week there will be hell to pay. DD won't be happy with me when I tell her she can't do anything fun with any of her friends. I'm irritated with her for having a major floor-drobe and wearing things multiple times without washing them 🤮 also her hamster cage hasn't been cleaned out for about 2 weeks now, completely unacceptable! The way this week has gone she WILL be feeling my wrath! Sorry about the rant.

Bowerbird5 · 31/07/2020 18:15

Heard at lunch time about the “north west” but later discovered it isn’t all the north west and we are not in it yet! Will consider making sure the freezer is stocked up and that I have enough paint thanks Zoo I have the shed paint to finish that job.

Come inside for a wee while.

HungryHazelEyes · 31/07/2020 18:18

sing onward was on Disney+ I haven't been on there in a while though, sorry I'm no help! It is a very cute film though. I'm glad you were able to go to the pub and enjoy your time there.

bower I'm glad you're starting to feel better

SingToTheSky · 31/07/2020 18:57

Thanks I think I’ll leave it then and hope that some other kid friendly film is out soon! When we do subscribe to Disney+ we can make that a movie night one (and frozen 2 as well). Hopefully the Caglets will sit through these 😂 There are a couple of films I might go and see though, not ones I was particularly bothered about but the tickets are sooo cheap now and with all this rumble of second waves there may not be much chance!

I’m really annoyed. A couple of months ago I did a major piece of anti procrastination and phoned the bank to change some payments, including downgrading my account... two payments for said account have since come out 🤬🤬🤬 he assured me it would be fine and I’ve not had any email or anything to say there was a problem, I can’t find anything about notice periods online (I assumed the first payment might be that) and again nothing was said. I had trouble closing it before so I’m grumpy it’s still not sorted, it’s such a waste of money 😰 I’ll have to be brave and phone them again, and in particular be assertive about the fact I wasn’t informed if there was a reason for it not working. I don’t like being assertive 😳

TheUpholder · 31/07/2020 20:24

That’s so frustrating Sing. Glad you got to the pub for some you time though. Thanks again for taking on August... can I officially hand over the reins, pointy stick and key to the naughty corner to you? Go easy on us with that whip!

Thanks for all the love for july’s thread, I enjoyed it and you were all shining examples of fledglings. I’m definitely having a restful evening tonight, ready to fly through August from tomorrow or maybe Monday Night all 🍒 👋

MrsTidyHouse · 31/07/2020 20:59

Morning routine is going nicely now. Up early, weather good enough today for the endless weeding and sweeping of the front garden, which I quite enjoy, tbh.

Then the usual routine of laundry, hoovering, cleaning the kitchen, etc. This morning I pulled some ancient woodchip off part of the wall behind the radiator. It was all curly at the edges and joins, with gunk and fluff stuck to it. A bit of hoovering, and the room smells better, too. Hung a whiteboard to keep me on track.

Embraced my afternoon slump with netflix and a pile of notebooks, diaries, etc around me while I had my feet up with a late lunch. Trying to contain things more, such as lists, and lists of lists. I think this will stay part of my daily routine, as I lose track too fast otherwise.

Now that the office is tidy, we can do something about the endless procrastination of form-filling. DH is starting that tomorrow. I'll continue with the filing.

SingToTheSky · 31/07/2020 21:35

Cheers upholder!

Pathetic list for today:
👋maths with DD1
👋braved the pub!
👋checked various websites to make plans (or try to anyway!)

Think I feel a bit more human though having had a nothing sort of day. When I was back from the pub Cagletini had a late nap and DH had a doze while I watched Simpsons with DS! There was so much stuff I should have been doing but to that I say 🖕

I know it’s a Fledglings tradition to be shocked at the fact it’s a new month already each time we start a new thread, but surely this is the worst ever 🤣 I mean... AUGUST???

Lots I should get done tomorrow and I need to check out the amazon order (couple of presents for DS) and I may have to have a browse of hobbycraft too 🤭

OP posts:
Doublechins · 31/07/2020 21:48

Evening all.

Spent the morning playing with DS4 with his new toys. DGM came round with his presents so she took the DC out into the garden while I had a mad dash tidy round (still had dishes to do from the day before 🙈)

Then went to Sainsbury's for bits for picnic.

We had a lovely time in the park this afternoon with DGM, DSIL and nephews. Had a picnic. The boys took football and frisbee to entertain themselves and spent ages climbing trees etc. They then went in the maze for a bit then we had a wander round to the playground. Had ice creams. Fed the ducks and DS4 had a ride on the train.

We didn't get back in until around 6 by which time it was too late to put the washing out because the thunderstorm was headed our way.

Just gave the DC rest of picnic bits/birthday cake to eat and we watched a film.

Boys wrote their journals then we sat and watched the storm for a bit before we went to bed.

We have rain forecast for tomorrow am so I'll do what I can In the house then and then in the afternoon we have to put the tent up because the boys are supposed to be taking part in camp at home with scouts. Think we'll also have a BBQ so may not get much washing done again 🙄

merryhouse · 31/07/2020 22:59

well I have a whole load of tadas but we have all yelled at each other over a difference in conversational styles fgs so I'll see you possibly tomorrow evening

Bowerbird5 · 31/07/2020 23:16

Went down to shut summerhouse and discovered it is 20 C still.
DS3 is probably going to get tested as a colleague working in the main area has tested positive. He works at the same place as DS2 who was tested last week because of a customer. They sent everyone home tonight. I haven’t seen DS3 since February I was going to arrange to see him this weekend.

2Princes I meant to say before that I have the flu jab every year and it hasn’t ever affected my asthma. I hope that eases your worries a little.

Picnic sounds lovely. I suggested to a friend that we went for one along the coast and had afternoon tea 🧺 picnic.
Going to do home bleugh tomorrow. I do look at links because I forget otherwise. I do have some in my journal to refer to as well. I stopped doing the journal because I post on here. Just use it for reference and I made my own detailed list following Flylady but taking out some that are not relevant and adding some of my own as I don’t have a porch or laundry room.

Right I am off to read my book.

Bowerbird5 · 31/07/2020 23:17

TheUpholder · 01/08/2020 09:41

Ah Merry Flowers. Well done on the ta Das. They still count even if you didn’t list them.

Princes I also have asthma and get my flu jab yearly with no issues.

Sounds like a lovely day yesterday awol, hope DS4 enjoyed his day.

We all need 🖕 days Lane Grin

I lay in until 9 this morning. It was lovely. Just finishing off breakfast and a cup of tea

✅ beds made, windows open
✅ LOL in and another lined up
✅ DW set off, sink filled ready for breakfast stuff

To do:
📌 hang LOL out when it finished
📌 wash dishes
📌 downstairs home bleurgh
📌 vac and mop under sofas as my zone 5 effort
📌 thorough vac and mop and tidy of hallway for zone 1

We are heading out for lunch with PIL for FIL’s birthday and will probably have a walk in the afternoon, and they’ve asked if they can have DD for tea so DH and I will either cook something fancy or head to a beer garden for a couple of hours.

They other thing I’d like to do today is some planning for August. For weeks I’ve been telling DD we might do that ‘in the summer’. I have to embrace the fact that it is actually now summer!

Have a good day everyone.

Morning all! Welcome to August 😱 we are in Zone 1 today, so do hallway stuff. I can’t work out if it’s just today or if we get a whole extra week?!

KCC - let’s start the month with a positive. What are you proud of yourself for in July?

For me it’s definitely looking after myself with diet and exercise - sticking pretty well to 16:8 and I’ve made a big effort with getting active, doing small workouts etc.

Hi everyone, a newbie here. Been doing a bit of the system in July, now planning to crank it up properly in August.
I am currently pregnant, and in the north of Scotland, so quite grateful for rainy cooler weather. Heatwave hasn't quite reached here yet in its full force.
@SingToTheSky yes to the exercise efforts! I can mainly manage walks at the moment, so trying to get the steps in if the weather permits.

Ok, filter in the hoover changed. Hallway here I come...
