Hello and welcome to the (slightly early) August Fledgling Thread! Join us for housework chat and a ridiculous amount of non housework chat too.

We follow (supposedly) the FlyLady system, which helps you gradually build up a set of routines. This month I won’t be putting regular links on, but there will be regular references to whatever the current zone and daily focus is. Please ask if you need any further info!

Here are some links to get you started (but don’t sign up for the emails as you’ll get inundated!)

www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/31-beginner-babysteps/ - a set of little tasks to gradually add to your day - some are a bit twee so pick and choose what you want!

www.flylady.net/c/sp.php#missions - this updates weekly with a set of five specific tasks for the weekly zone - worth checking for ideas! I will try and remember to remind us what zone we are in. It changes on a Sunday and we will be starting with Zone 1, the entrance/porch/hallway, and dining room if you have one.

www.flylady.net/c/lp.php - this contains links for most other things so is a good place to check if you don’t know where to start

It looks like the focus of the month for August is LAUNDRY - getting into the habit of a full load washed, dried and away each day.

Also I was bored a while back so I put together a little glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.
KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done. Oops.

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash.

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

Cherry Waves - borne of a typo of “cheery waves” this is now - to the extent my autocorrect just changed it again - often how we sign off. You may also see it in emoji form! 🍒👋🙋🏻 (😷 for socially distanced waves!).

Haughty Corner - this is from a typo of the naughty corner - the virtual hangout spot where we hide from housework and eat virtual snacks.

Future Friend or FF - the idea (apparently coming from The Organised Mum Method) of doing something to make life easier for yourself in future. Includes things like choosing clothes for the next day, getting bags ready etc.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally, for any Fledglings old or new who are trying to lose weight in lockdown, here’s our new body clutter banishing thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weight_loss_chat/3975886-Body-Clutter-Be-Gone-The-Fledglings-Weightloss-Thread?pg=1

I’ll stop waffling there. Welcome one and all, a huge thank you to KTCluck for steering us through July while also working, and away we go for August! 🍒👋

Hello everyone!

Welcome Alex Smile.

Yay for Kallax excitement Grin.

I am ashamed to admit it but I hate Toald Dahl books Sad. I admire the writing enormously but always found them terrifying as a kid and still do as an adult. Weirdly his non-fiction work doesn’t scare me. I devoured Boy and Going Solo as a teenager even though there are som graphic descriptions of medical procedures etc in them. And he has a beautiful but very sad piece he wrote about measles. But the children’s stuff about witches etc terrified me. Have met very few people who can relate to it Blush! DH loves Quentin Blake illustrations and. I have bought him a few cards over the years with them on but can’t look at them myself for long as they scare me making me think of the books ConfusedHmm.

Assuming you all want me on the thread still after that embarrassing confession I shall carry on...

mummy Flowers

KCC: yes MC you have reminded me about pregnancy vivid dreams. I don’t usually remember my dreams and generally sleep very deeply but have been having dreams about work and school during the pandemic. Just processing things in my head I think. Dreams and sleep are absolutely fascinating.

Had a really lovely day seeing our friends and their children in a country park. Lots of space to socially distance and we took separate picnics. DH and I did home bleugh when we got back then we had fish and chips from the chop shop. Which actually was disappointing but still lovely to have takeaway iyswim.

Cherry wings to all. Thanks for KCC and thread leading Sing.

TooStressyTooMessy · 08/08/2020 21:24

Somehow missed a load of posts. Meg, I LOVE that pinboard. Upholder fair play to your DH for ploughing on. Totally get you in the mind map, the mental load and the guilt Sing.

TooStressyTooMessy · 08/08/2020 21:25

Aaagggh so many typos. Roald Dahl obviously .

SingToTheSky · 08/08/2020 22:32

TBF stressy the books are pretty dark! Reading them as an adult I was a bit 😱 and the caglets refused some, they never liked the witches and the reason I took so long to get round to watching the bfg is because they hate that too!

ta da
😑reading (finished one book and started another)
😑scary mind map of life crap
😑sorted iCloud storage for me and DD1
😑put command towel hook up in downstairs loo
😑discussed some rules with DD1
😑helped bathe Cagletini
😑spoke to author and arranged phone call for tomorrow which I now have forgotten the time of
😑checked marking for first assignment - pretty good overall! Out of 8 questions I have a little bit to add on one question, and one to retry.
😑edited Tesco

ta didn’t
❌have a proper discussion with DH
❌actual housework, decluttering etc

Morning

Will this heat ever end?I'd somehow got into my head worst was over yesterday, but forecast saying hotter today, even hotter tom and still to hot for my liking til Thurs/Fri

Thoroughly fed up I visited ultra long range forecasts

THATbasicrebelBITCH · 09/08/2020 07:01

That would be a nice time for snow 🌨☃️❄

Highs predicted here of 23 today

We had a family thing yesterday, and have another today. I just want to sleep!

Have been looking at this Green Homes grant that is being brought out in September and am definitely going to apply. Is anyone else?

TheUpholder · 09/08/2020 07:30

Morning

So yesterday afternoon ended up being spent on the beach, followed by tea and a g & t in PILs garden. Safe to say there was no further flying achieved and DD slept like a log! It was a really lovely day, first proper summer holiday-type day I can remember for a long time.

This morning I got up early while the other two were snoring away. I’ve set the DW off and cleaned the benches while waiting on the kettle to boil. Shuffled through to the living room hoping to manage an episode of something in peace to find DD sat staring sleepily at me on the stairs. Nearly spilt my cuppa in shock. We are now cuddled up with toy story instead.

We are planning a much slower paced day today. Gammon for lunch, a walk, maybe some gardening, and I’ll try and fit the home bleurgh in before it gets too hot.

Welcome Alex!

I haven’t looked into that properly That but will take a look.

foxessocks · 09/08/2020 08:24

toostressy no, I totally get it! The BFG is scary, dd hated it the first time I read it to her and this time we skipped a few bits at the beginning because I wanted her to read the dreams bit where it becomes lovely! I hated the twits when I was young, I still don't like that one much, dd and ds love it though. Also, agree with sing when I went back to them as an adult I was pretty shocked at some of it!

Does anyone:s kids like David Williams worlds worst children? Dd has that book and that was quite horrible I thought!

It's too hot, haven't slept well and the kids are driving us round the bend. Was meant to get an early start for Kallax sorting but I'm still in bed Confused trying to ignore the kids.

SingToTheSky · 09/08/2020 08:47

Morning all. I think the most exciting thing that’s happening here today is that tesco is bringing nice food! 😳 No idea about the weather but I don’t think we will be doing anything. Covid bus timetables cancelled the Sunday service.

I’ve been fielding strops from grumpy toddler 🙄 as she didn’t want to choose anything to watch after one DVD didn’t work (I really need to go through them TBH) but then didn’t want me to choose anything either, until I suggested a random looney tunes disc (Daffy Duck/Porky Pig) when she suddenly cheered up.

🦆🐷🦆🐷🦆

So it’s Sunday which means no missions, and you need to do something to renew your spirit.

We are also finally moving into zone two - the kitchen! So declutter in there, if anywhere. I just realised it’s now a month since we did quite a lot in ours... hmmm, still an improvement but it’s definitely not as tidy as it was last time!

KCC inspired by my look through the DVD books earlier - any favourite films from your youth that aren’t really known about now? Two of mine are:
Gay Purr-ee, about a country cat (voiced by Judy Garland!) who wants to see Paris. I watched it endlessly, loved the songs. Hoping to introduce it to Cagletini soon but she declared this morning she doesn’t like cats 🤔😂
The Legend of Lochnagar, which is about some tiny people, and is introduced by (maybe narrated by, can’t remember) Prince Charles.

🐷🦆🐷🦆🐷

Had a very lazy day yesterday which helped me feeling less 😥 stressed.

I washed the sitting room and dining room windows outside.
Snipped off dead heads from pots and baskets.
Planted up some herbs.
Made salad for lunch.
Watered the garden.
Made tea.
Washed up several times.

The rest of the time I did declutter for 15 mins. Then read my book lazing in a deck chair.

Slept well.
Going to online Mass.
Going to marinate lamb shanks for slow cooking later.
Read in deck chair.
Put recycling in shed.
Try to find homes for stuffon dining room table.
Make tea Morrocan lamb shanks. .

Sorry. Welcome Alex.

KCC- can’t think of any that weren’t well known . The original National Velvet was a favourite. There wasn’t DVDs or video tapes in my childhood and I didn’t watch television much. We were outside a lot.

Oh meg DH loves the court jester! He had mentioned it and then I found it on DVD for him one Christmas. We used to do the whole “Get it? Got it! Good!” thing with DD1 🤩

Right this lack of motivation is embarrassing. List time. First I’m making the most of having the TV so I’m watching one episode of the Middle. DH quite likes it too so it’s nice to watch it with him.

PO3.1
❗️Order my meds online
❗️Make amendments to my first assignment (add a small bit to one question and retry another)
❗️Finish chapter of current book

The court jester was a film my dad loved
I loved pinocchio as a child, but it's not dated well

Stilllivinginazoo · 09/08/2020 12:09

AlexTheLittleCat · 09/08/2020 12:38

Thank you for the lovely welcome!

Ta da:

  • thrown some shoes away
  • pottered around in the kitchen tidying whilst looking after slightly feral small children who are all after the same toys etc

This week I need to clean the windows, please tell I'm not the only person who doesn't get around to it?!

SingToTheSky · 09/08/2020 12:55

List 1 sort of done, but I was really confused as to what exactly the bigger question wants so I did the other amendment, emailed my tutor to ask her, and then wrote a load of notes for the rest of the next assignment (five mini essays).

PO3.2
❗️Healthful lunch and meds
❗️Print maths sheets for DD1
❗️Quick go on exercise bike

Alex You’re not I do mine when I notice eg when you can’t see through them properly. I will have to re do the front one because it looks filthy. I definitely washed it yesterday but by last night yuk. There are a lot of tractors back and forth at the moment.i am going to use Mr Muscle tomorrow.

Answered an email that I hadn’t got around to but has been on my mind but always at the wrong time if you know what I mean. Pleased with self now. Been to Mass online. Bit patchy at the beginning and a bit in the middle. Our church is at full capacity 60 normally can squeeze in 300 on Christmas. Only time it is full. Easter fairly full. So I can’t go if I wanted too. 60 people too many for me just now and I know most of them so not an in and out situation.

Sing Wow go you!

I also loved Danny Kaye as a kid. Can vaguely remember that film. We used to watch films that had Grace Kelly and Rod Taylor who my mum once went on a date with. She said he was more handsome in the flesh and she loved Grace Kelly. We weren’t told anymore details.

Right going to have lunch.

No flying here except washing up and cooking later.

Bowerbird5 · 09/08/2020 13:43

Fly lady has lost the plot. Nipped in to see sneak of the week and it is all about kids cleaning 🧹🤣😂

SingToTheSky · 09/08/2020 14:08

Ugh the afternoon is dragging.

Alex definitely not just you with the windows 😳 it was on our regular chore chart earlier in lockdown but for various reasons that eventually fell by the wayside 🙄

DD1 is evidently in a hard done by mood. She’s still convinced she does waaaay more than DS but actually she does far less now because she’s not home as much! She’s not bad really, she doesn’t complain or refuse etc I just hate the (subtle) attitude. She wasn’t happy about having to store more of her stuff in her room (was getting her to declutter a Kallax basket that really shouldn’t be in the living room) and had to point out she has far more space to herself than the rest of us! I still need to print her maths but after that it’s up to DH to push her through it because I am in no mood (and I’ve already helped DS with his as he was struggling a bit).

Need to clear up from lunch, sort out the toddler, check DS’ work and print maths before I can do another list.
