Fledglings prepare to fly their lockdown nests and jump into July - join us for the July FlyLady thread

Welcome all fledglings, newbies and lurkers to the July 2020 flylady thread, where we try and follow flylady’s system to keep our homes in order and our lives organised. We are a friendly bunch and like a bit of a natter, amongst posting our ‘To Do’ lists for accountability and celebrating our ‘Ta Da’ lists no matter how long or short. No fledgling is left behind, just jump in and join us wherever you are at - whether you are a lazy slattern living in chaos or a fully certified domestic goddess wanting to keep up the motivation. Most of us flit between the two depending on the day. The threads tends to be a supportive corner of MN, and we readily provide listening ears for woes and rants when needed.

Flylady is a system based around morning and evening routines, with babysteps to get you started and a daily focus, such as planning and family fun day. There’s a weekly home blessing (or ‘bleurgh’ as we prefer) which is a basic clean to keep the house ticking over, with short bursts of decluttering or deeper cleaning in weekly zones once you are ready. Flylady also suggests short missions each day. Feel free to adapt the system to make it fit in with your life.

Link to the launchpad is here (I hope) and the baby steps are here. From the launchpad I like the ‘flight plan’ for a reminder of the routines, and ‘sneak peek of the week’ for a list of the week‘a missions. You can sign up for emails, but be warned, you will need to regularly declutter your inbox!

As thread leader for July I have taken possession of the thread pointy stick —> for anyone in need of a sharp prod of motivation, but I’ve also set up a chilled quiet naughty corner, complete with comfortable day beds, a gentle sea breeze, and unlimited fruit platters, ice creams and cocktails to any fledgling who is in need of rest and recuperation or is just on strike. No partners or children allowed.

I’ll also try and keep the ‘keep calm corner’ (KCC) going. Originally introduced by our lovely SC, it’s a little daily dose of respite we’ve been using to help us get through these strange times.

I’ll do my best to keep us all motivated and flying throughout July. On work days I may appear with the larks, or not crawl in until the end of the day so apologies in advance if I’m late with links.

We start tomorrow in zone 1 (hall, porch, dining room). Here’s the missions. Habit of the month is ‘swish and swipe’ which is a daily 2 minute wipe of our toilets and sinks. Tomorrow is anti-procrastination day where we tackle those tasks we’ve been putting off.

Anyway, enough waffle, July we are coming for you! shortly, I’m just checking the naughty corner is ready

Yes Marvel films are fun and Pirates of the Caribbean, I'm guessing they have seen most of the Harry Potter series.
Just wanted to echo that Covid is very scary. I live in Scotland and everyone I know is still being careful.
I have noticed in America there are people called the Long haulers affected by Covid for months after being infected, many in their twenties and thirties. It is a nasty illness.

KTCluck · 25/07/2020 05:35

Happy Saturday everyone. I’ll just pop in with links before I get up and tackle the busy morning, but probably won’t be back today.

launchpad - family fun day today (Mam and Dad fun time in our house, although I’m sure DD will also be having fun with her GP). Last day in zone 4 if you do zone stuff at the weekend.

KCC - playful penguins

Marta I remember the biting baby days. Ouch.

Enjoy your weekend fledglings.

Stilllivinginazoo · 25/07/2020 06:42

Ed well done, mines very much still work in progress
Lane eeek
Meg gorgeous bin

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 25/07/2020 07:13

Hmm suppose i will have to wait and see re the flu vaccinations. If they give it nasal at gp though i imagine they will in schools too. Dc1 is too old and healthy to get it at the GP.

Yesterday i cleaned out a really awkward cupboard in my kitchen. That has taken me 3 years to do Blush

What's a magic corner? We only have one corner cupboard and it's just a plain cupboard, we keep all the stuff that rarely gets used in it (fondue set etc). My parents had carousel shelves but they broke under the weight of stuff on them.

Mine is an absolute twat to clean Angry

We also have a carousel one, i may clean that today

LaneBoy · 25/07/2020 10:19

I’ve always liked the idea of a magic corner! But maybe not :o we have a weird L cupboard but it’s used for medicines. I need to replace and sort the trays (with labels! 🦋) on the bottom shelf at least (the top is all DH’s).

It’s been a long morning. I made the toddler lunch at her request, around 8.30 :o (just gave her cream cheese crackers, cheese and salad bits) followed by breakfast at 9 Hmm. I’m feeling like I could be a bit productive today... maybe... but I need a push, so a list it is:

PO3.1
❗️Start doing Latin on Duolingo (and write down vocab)
❗️Move yesterday’s laundry along and put a new LOL on (so tempting to put those as two separate tasks!)
❗️Start new bin bag and put smaller rubbish bags in, collect other rubbish

EasilyDelighted · 25/07/2020 10:20

I had to google image that. They do look like a PITA to clean.

Bowerbird5 · 25/07/2020 10:33

I used to have a carousel one in the other end but now it is just a cupboard but we have a new one near the sink and I love it. It is super duper and strong. Didn’t know what to put in it so it just has random stuff. I need to sort it out properly. We used to keep the boxes of cat food there. Now there is room for a bread machine I think. Must measure. DH isn’t keen but I think he would love it. He eats much more bread than I do. I have a sandwich at lunch and that is usually all the bread I have per day. Occasional piece of toast.

That is a great bread bin I could have done with that when the kids were home.

I got most of those jobs done yesterday and I was out in the garden a lot as it was gorgeous. Potted up new plants. Picked blackcurrants for about 1 1/2 hours. I had the radio with me.

Boudoir corner isn’t finished but I found a box to declutter and did most of that last night.
DH really enjoyed his walk so he was in a very good mood. We had cold fish, scallops and salad for tea.

Ed thank you for the great photos of the allotment and for your honesty. I do like yours more like mine would be. I shall get a photo of our messy bit. We’ve got the garden tidy rather than the house but some bits are tidy. Kitchen and bathroom. Sitting room is fairly good just the sofa is a bit messy. Stuff we were bother looking at not put away.

Lane DS2 was our climber and DD a bit. DS 2 used to climb on the dining chairs then the table and went through the hatch to kitchen once he was about 12/13 months. I had to have the chairs lined up around the room.
DD did the stair gate so we took it down then.

Right better get to it.
Don’t have a plan yet. Some of boudoir though.

Cherry 🍒 waves to everyone.

squanderedcore · 25/07/2020 11:03

I have a total bastard corner cupboard, created by someone who purported to be a builder and knocked together our (extremely cheap) kitchen when we moved in. (I use the term 'kitchen' loosely as he managed not to include any drawers or shelves Hmm.) The cupboard is so deep and dark and low that its virtually impossible to see its contents, never mind retrieve anything from it. You should hear the swearing when I need a pie dish.

Not quite caught up yet. KT thanks for the KCC link - I’ll keep the tab open for when Cagletini needs distracting! She loves bubbles. And who doesn’t love penguins? My dad used to call me penguin (because I like fish but I can’t fly) 🐧

Thanks for all the film recs! I’ll def ask DH and DSCs about marvel ones - not my thing apart from Ant Man (so funny) and I liked Dr Strange. Ohhh kid who would be king - I have seen about two thirds of it. We went to a free schools screening (except no schools had booked so the entire audience was home edders :o) but DS got scared so we ended up waiting for the others in Starbucks. Shame as I loved it! Bedknobs and Broomsticks was a favourite here for years 💕

It’s Zootropolis here meg but I think it’s Zootopia in US? Similar to the philosopher’s vs sorcerer’s stone I guess. I love that film but it wasn’t watched so often as they’ve moved out of the Disney phase now really and Netflix definitely means we don’t use DVDs as much! I want to properly sort our enormous collection while it’s being used less - when we do want to watch something we can never find it!

Just going to do the next laundry as per my previous list - other bits finished but the drying was still damp so that delayed me. Then:

PO3.2
❗️Tidy and spray clean old sensory play tray as the lentils and cereals have been there ages 😳😳😳
❗️Print confirmation for Decathlon order
❗️Quick workout

EasilyDelighted · 25/07/2020 13:03

Mine still like Zootropolis and Inside Out every now and then. Also DD likes the live action Beauty and the Beast.

foxessocks · 25/07/2020 13:05

Sorry I'm so behind with the thread! I don't have one of those cupboards but we do have a very annoying corner cupboard that wasn't made very well so things drop down the side never to be seen again 😂 can't wait for a new kitchen!!!

Today's ta das
Went for a morning walk (I've been trying to do this every day rain or shine, rain today so nobody else in the family wanted to join me!)
Dishwasher on
Washing on and hung up
Made cherry cookies and cherry yogurt / cherry yogurt lollies...we had some cherries to use up Grin my hands are now stained purple, should have used gloves Shock
Gave dh a lift into work to collect some bits and bobs
Dh has fitted the lighting in our new upstairs cupboard , it's amazing I wish I could have a bigger version for a walk in wardrobe (no chance!)
Hoovered the kitchen, including the mats and round the corners
Took lots of rubbish round to bins / compost heap
Collected up a lot of the splosh pouches ready to post back (this is one of those jobs I put off and put off!)

My mother in law is visiting this afternoon but I'm resisting tidying up like crazy, sod it!

squanderedcore · 25/07/2020 13:10

A head torch would definitely help Megiddo Grin

I haven't caught up properly either! Many thanks for links though KT! Hope you enjoy your weekend too! (Your Fri list was brill btw!)

Our bread machine which usually lives in the office (don't ask) is currently living in the hall Hmm as is my K-mix (but at least the latter is sort of hidden). Dh thinks this is completely normal Confused.

A French friend of mine who lives in a very sleek house has long kitchen counter tops with lots of plug suckets. Her kitchen machinery such mixers etc live behind mini-garage doors so you just have to pull 'em up and everything is ready there, clean and plugged in, and ready to use. After use, they go neatly back in to their indiv space. I am green with envy!

Lane I thought of you last night as we ended a long and celebratory day (it was dd's b'day) watching Joe Hisaishi in Budokan on You Tube (dd's choice) - the Studio Ghibli 25 yrs anniv concert.

We ate out at lunch time and a really lovely friend of dd's very kindly baked her a cake so I didn't even need to do that! (Will be making a cake for her outdoor sd "party" (if it goes ahead that is) though.)

Had a disgracefully lazy morning so far and have only made and served breakfast, emptied dw, done some on-line banking and re-fed the wms so far. Owing to a bit of hard graft over the past few days, downstairs is actually looking reasonably respectable (well as respectable as it comes with scratched old furniture and fading paintwork) so I am focusing on the first floor today. It's a lovely day outside though so going for a long dog walk now to blow away a few cobwebs.

Love the cartoon Merry Grin can very much identify! Grin

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Makes note to self to order flu jabs

LaneBoy · 25/07/2020 14:52

Ohhh sc I didn’t even think to look for that sort of thing on YouTube I’ll definitely have a look. I love Hisaishi’s music. There was meant to be a Ghibli concert at the Albert hall I think, I didn’t book as that was when I was starting to hear rumblings about the pandemic :( does she have a favourite? Mine is probably the legend of Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke :)

I am lazing for a while having done a workout and a teeny bit of housework. DD2 is lazing in front of Peppa. I should really clear up all the beads - she wanted to play with them earlier so I stuck a few spaghetti sticks in plasticine so she could thread them. She enjoyed that for a while before scattering the remains, at least.

I’ve not actually watched any of the live action remakes ED 😳 the originals were the soundtrack to my childhood (the ones I had on VHS I watched constantly) and I just can’t get my head around them not being the same IYSWIM? I hated the Alice in Wonderland remake so I think that put me off. My DSCs have unlimited cards so they watch pretty much anything at the cinema, including most remakes, but DSS is refusing point blank to watch the new Mulan if there’s no Mushu :o 🐉 (I don’t have strong feelings either way on that one though as it wasn’t one I grew up watching).

LittlemissAWOL · 25/07/2020 15:36

Hope you have a fab time for your anniversary KT.

This morning's efforts haves mainly been in the garden.
🌷 made DC noodles for breakfast. DH thought I'd cracked but DS2 helped me put the shopping away and asked so 🤷‍♀️
🌷 dishes
🌷LOL
🌷 quick clean of both cars (just inside)
🌷 then cut front and back grass, cut hedge and swept drive. This was all of us not just me.
🌷 made sandwiches, yogurt, apple and biscuit for DC lunch
🌷 first LOL on line next one in.

We're now at the park. Have had a lovely walk around in the sunshine, seen the animals, DC played in playground for a bit and they're now running round the maze. Was going to get them an ice cream but the que is massive!

Just sent DS for a bath too - he and DH got drenched on their shopping errands! And it turned out the shirt he’d taken to keep warm was, in fact, a pyjama shirt. He’d seen it in the handmedowns the other week (he went through them alone) and as he doesn’t wear buttoned jammies he assumed it must be a normal shirt. 😳😂

I am going to have a nap I think.
