New home for the new year - still getting rid of one item a day part 6

Here we are again!

Little by little a group of mums netters have been decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day. Whether we eat it, bin it, recycle it, sell or give it away we are slowly tidying our homes.

Is this the thread where we finish? Probably not

As usual newbies are welcome to join us. We get rid of one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress and get support when it gets hard.

Keiki - do you have a local sale room? We filled the car, seats down, with boxes of 'bric-a-brac', curtains, a pine shelf unit and blanket box, leather travel hold all, etc and minus the sale room costs made just over £100.
I have another load to go, more furniture, a standard lamp (£2.00 for PAT testing), 5 boxes of unwanted ornaments, 3 boxes of toys.

Anything that doesn't sell a charity collects.

vroc81 · 18/02/2019 21:42

Have been visiting dm today and no time for sorting so i emptied some definitely not edible jam out the cupboard and a couple of other old food things before putting the bins out for bin day...

Keiki · 18/02/2019 21:43

That sounds brilliant Pippa! Would be ideal for clearing relatives house too. I shall investigate. In the meantime I've listed the items on gum tree. Fingers crossed. And given DP two bags of baby clothes to give to his friend tomorrow. No money but less stuff is always good!

Getting less done now the baby is awake more and today I really need to do some cleaning!

SandAndSea · 19/02/2019 12:25

I discovered a box of receipts and packaging for Christmas presents yesterday - DP had hidden it at Christmas and forgotten about it. So, that's on my list to go through today.

I'm also charitying a nail tool kit and sorting out my baking tray/saucepan cupboard.

SandAndSea · 19/02/2019 14:05

So, it turns out that if you store your baking trays, frying pans etc on their sides, they take up much less room and are much easier to access. I've managed to fit more in the cupboard and clear more things off the side! How did I not realise this before??

KarBB · 19/02/2019 14:40

@SandAndSea Yes! We discovered this a while ago and it's amazing.

KarBB · 19/02/2019 14:41

2 big bags to charity including an old coat and 5 pairs of shoes...

Well done IWill!

I cleaned the bathroom and in doing so binned three tubs of cleaner that didn't work as I wanted (inherited from relative), used another up and binned a mouldy shower mat.

Gibble1 · 19/02/2019 19:46

Haven’t posted for ages. Haven’t caught up with thread either. Have got rid of 2 carful toctip yesterday and sold a bed!
Right now (!) have just collected all my clothing together to Kondo 😱 wish me luck 🤞

SandAndSea · 19/02/2019 20:38

Oo, well done, @Gibble ! And welcome back!

SandAndSea · 19/02/2019 20:39

Urgh! Tagging fail.
@Gibble1 .

SandAndSea · 19/02/2019 20:51

I've been looking at my saucepan area which has tended to be a bit chaotic and it turns out that I've got 5 too many lids. No wonder! Having rearranged the trays etc, I now have room to store the saucepans with their lids on. I'm going to keep one spare lid as it fits a frying pan. The rest are going, along with a frying pan and a jelly mould which I've never used.

WoogleCone · 19/02/2019 21:56

Welcome back gibble!

Today I sorted some old sewing stuff out that I was given from grandmas house, emptied the bobbins which DD thought was hilarious (she's basically a cat) and cleaned out my sewing box so everything fits nicely. DD was still interested when I finished so whipped up a little draw string bag that she picked the fabric for. That's a few remnants used up and gone!

Also painted the inside of the drawers while she was at nursery. There's a little paint left and they may need another coat so will have a look in the morning as DH has the day off too. DM also visiting tomorrow so I can show her the progress (grandma was her mum, who's house the drawers came from).

Oh and baked a cake to use up the eggs! Today was a good day :)

Keiki · 20/02/2019 14:13

More cleaning today so my only offerings are a pair of trousers in the bin and a couple of small tins into the charity bag.

Gibble1 · 20/02/2019 16:31

I did my clothes last night and have taken to the clothes bank 3 huge bags full of clothing. Wardrobes are nicely cleaned out and shoes put in tidily.
Phoned DH and said we need to do his tonight and he is in a right monk about it- said he did his recently etc etc but I need to get in the cupboards and wardrobes and clean them as mine were full of carpet moths and a shawl I had knitted has actually been eaten by the chuffing things.
Am all caught up on thread and although it’s still early, have had a bath and put jamas on as I have a rotten headache.

MotherWol · 20/02/2019 17:27

Small bag of stuff to the charity shop today, including an awful Peppa Pig soft toy that doubles as a massive rucksack. I pity the parent who gets pestered into buying it! It’s DD’s birthday next week so a bit of pre-emptive decluttering is in order before she gets new stuff. It’s stemming the flow of new stuff in that’s half the battle - I want to keep it decluttered and tidy as I’m putting all this work into it!

I finally got a bag of uniform to the second hand uniform shop. It must’ve been waiting to go for months. Other than that decluttering is going very slowly at home. Although I’ve made good progress at work - and cleared out lots of old paperwork.

SandAndSea · 20/02/2019 21:06

I did some much needed shredding today. That's about it.

StealthNinjaMum · 21/02/2019 09:23

Sorry I need to catch up.

Oubliettebravo does your dh just leave those bottles lying around? I have a slight problem in that dd2 saves bottles for arts and crafts and when she goes to bed I have to hide them in the room of doom (she will find them in the kitchen bin!) but she is a child! Divorce him!

Thatsnotmybaby I agree, decluttering is such a big part of my life I rarely remember what I've thrown away. It's good though - it's habit.

Good news about the hoover cupboard greenwillow!

Motherwol that really made me laugh, I can picture a child desperate for the Peppa Pig rucksack. I am so glad that my dcs are past the Peppa Pig stage.

I have been doing the usual chucking out receipts, bits of paperwork etc. It's difficult to focus on an area while dc are home for half-term so I don't have high expectations. As GreenWillow said the house is much easier to deal with. My house is never more than 30 minutes away from being 'guest ready' (assuming the guest doesn't go upstairs) and sometimes 10 minutes away.

My main area of improvement is actually me. I have signed up to online dating, a handsome man has 'favourited' me and I have messaged him but apparently men on old are really awful so there's every possibility he might never reply!

Anyway it's got me thinking about my wardrobe and my clothes as potential 'date night' outfits and I don't have many. I am wondering if my style is very boring and if I need to be younger. I have tidied away the clothes that are now obviously too big as I have lost 23lbs and I look at a really awful wardrobe. I reckon if I threw away everything that didn't give me joy I'd only have 5 outfits. So my aim is to operate a one in one out system quickly and buy some new outfits that I love. This is easier said than done and I have spent hours online shopping and bought nothing!

Oo, Stealth ! How exciting! I like Pinterest for wardrobe/style ideas. Before I discovered it, I used to save loads of bookmarks which I hardly ever looked at again as it just didn't work for me. Now, I have lovely boards of ideas, which are organised and super helpful. If you search for 'capsule wardrobe' you might find some ideas which are in line with a clutter clearing mindset.

My house is never more than 30 minutes away from being 'guest ready' (assuming the guest doesn't go upstairs)

Grin This made me laugh. Mine's much the same. I keep meaning to do more on the bedrooms but, you know, life and all that.

Today, my items are nameless things from dishwashers past and present. Quite a wadge of them which were stored in the kitchen just in case.
