New home for the new year - still getting rid of one item a day part 6

Here we are again!

Little by little a group of mums netters have been decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day. Whether we eat it, bin it, recycle it, sell or give it away we are slowly tidying our homes.

Is this the thread where we finish? Probably not

As usual newbies are welcome to join us. We get rid of one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress and get support when it gets hard.

Thanks @chloechloe - I have just done the quiz and I am a fellow “cricket”. I definitely leave things until I have the tiime and energy to do them “properly”, and the jobs just get bigger and bigger so never get done.

MrsNezbit · 09/02/2019 10:06

Out - a long cardigan that sheds too much to be worth wearing, a load of outgrown baby clothes and a big old statue that no longer sparks joy

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/02/2019 14:54

Couple of DH old work shirts to go ( he has replaced with 4 new ones)

I need to sort through DS clothes, I'll get him to try on the clothes and see what still fits him (he grows like a weed , something that fit him last month can be wagging round his ankles next month Hmm )

We've had a few (blissful and necessary) child free hours today so two big black bin bags have been filled. Some books, clothes and miscallenous stuff. It took two hours to deep clean the upstairs, including the bathroom and hall/stairs as well as decluttering 3 bedrooms which I didn't think was too bad. All cupboards and drawers are now supremely organised. I still feel like we could have less stuff but I appreciate I may be more obsessive about this than most as I know, in reality, we are quite reserved when compared to others . All bed linen changed and washed too so tonight once the kids are in bed I'm going to have a long soak and pamper session then sink into nice fresh bed linen. Bliss! Day off tomorrow with DH and the kids then on Monday I'm going to gut out downstairs. No rest for the wicked!! 😂

chloechloe · 09/02/2019 19:45

How’ve you got all that done in 2 hours 433, amazing work!

Today we’ve got rid of a toy that decided to stop working after the batteries had gone. I’ve also done another kitchen cupboard.

WoogleCone · 09/02/2019 20:21

Hey everyone!
Sorry been pretty quiet, been Ill for the last week or so so been getting home and going immediately to bed haha. Heading there momentarily in fact!

Over the past week though we've managed to sort quite a bit of recycling (council are bring us new bins soon which will now include plastics which is awesome!) I quickly bashed out some cupcakes to use up the eggs and a load of fiddly sprinkles and bits from the cupboard which is much clearer now.
DHs work colleague had a baby so bashed out a quick pram blanket with some leftover wool from the SIL project. That's wrapped and ready to post.

So less decluttering and more just using up stuff this week, will try harder next week! I'm setting my sights on the middle wardrobe!

gassylady · 09/02/2019 21:40

Tip run today lots of cardboard and old broken DS console my nephew left here.

SandAndSea · 09/02/2019 22:18

Today's item: a ceramic pot. I was using it in the bathroom but have decided to put those things away instead.

PenelopeFlintstone · 10/02/2019 10:06

Today's items were from DD's room: several pairs of knickers, a bag of rubbish, a bag of recycling. Also, a bag of clothes moved from her room to the ebay/charity bag.

Great progress WoogleCone! I was fully expecting this weekend would be one of those exhausting messy ones; DH is away and it’s just me and DD. But amazingly, the flat is tidy, we’re both fed, and we even had fun!

A few outgrown toys have made it into the charity bag, and I’ve got a copy of The Joy of Less from the library to keep my decluttering motivation up.

SandAndSea · 10/02/2019 22:38

@MotherWol - Please let me know how you find that book. I was thinking of getting it.

I've been a bit slack on all this recently so I'm going to try to do a bit more this week. That's the plan anyway.

PenelopeFlintstone · 11/02/2019 01:39

Using up stuff is surely the best kind of decluttering, WoggleCone Smile It's gone but wasn't wasted and no sunk costs to mourn.

GreenWillow - it sounds like it's all coming together. Yesterday, I printed the TOMM schedules for the fridge but now I'm going to go and Google "Simply Clean' Smile

This morning I threw out an unravelled shower pouffe, or whatever it is that they're called.

DS was 3 yesterday so more things in than went out but did declutter a pair of his outgrown jeans and a dress that I don't wear

WoogleCone · 11/02/2019 10:41

Thanks motherwol & Penelope, I hadn't thought of the cost aspect so that does make it feel a tonne better!
It's in the post now anyway so off the kitchen side!
Just got today at work and then I can have three days off, DD is at nursery tomorrow afternoon so will aim to tackle that wardrobe then. Might look at the pantry cupboard later as DH isn't home til 9pm tonight so I can make a mess haha

chloechloe · 11/02/2019 11:40

Good bashing woogle! That’s so lovely that you can make homemade baby blankets so quickly! You’ve encouraged me to bash out some muffins this afternoon!

Your posts make me laugh so much willow, I too would be outraged by that half an arsing centimetre!

I’ve finally got together and sent off all of the documents, forms and photos needed to sort out our residence permits pending Brexit so that’s finally done. Thanks Boris.

We have the PiL visiting at the moment who came armed with Kinder Surprise eggs - I loathe the plastic junk inside these things. I dread to think of the impact on the environment in producing such tat. They’ve also brought a bag of bath toys for the baby - another pet hate of mine. I wonder how much of my life is spent rinsing the soap scum off and squeezing the grimy water out of them. Sigh.

PurpleFrog · 11/02/2019 13:36

I have also been trying to use stuff up. Last week I worked my way through a box of porridge sachets that I have been avoiding all winter. I have realised that there is quite a lot of stuff in the kitchen cupboards that I pass over and take something else in preference, both in terms of food and cleaning products such as washing powder etc.. I have decided that there is no point in keeping stuff just in case I run out of the things I really like and can't get more... so either I have to use it up... or it gets chucked.

On Saturday I emptied 2 shelves in the kitchen which hold bottles and cans. I cleaned the shelves and dusted the older bottles, and checked all the dates. There are now 2 out-of-date cans in the fridge for immediate use.

I put one more item on eBay last night and sold another. I have checked the contents of 2 more games - one will go to the Charity shop and I might eBay the other. Tonight I intend to sort out a bag to drop off at a Charity Shop on my way to the Post Office tomorrow.

I also washed the faded bedspread and an old pair of jogging trousers which will go in a new textile recycling bag.

gassylady · 11/02/2019 16:15

Not much going on here. Two bags dropped into charity shop- one originally buy split into two to make it easier to carry. More old work journals into paper recycling

SandAndSea · 11/02/2019 16:51

Today's out: a make-up bag. It's been well loved but is so worn now, it's passed saving.

I was hoping to do more today but have been too busy.

Keiki · 11/02/2019 17:07

I don't feel like I've been very productive over the last few days, but today I've thrown a few things into a bag for the charity shop - a cushion, a couple of books and a few other random bits. Also sold a couple of things on eBay that I need to post tomorrow.

gassylady · 11/02/2019 18:04

Sudden burst of enthusiasm, a drawer in bedside chest sorted. Lots of pop socks unearthered not a single pair intact 😬 good haul for the new rag bag

WoogleCone · 11/02/2019 18:34

Thank you chloechloe Smile it only had one colour change so was quite an easy one - I think I've attached a pic, hopefully it'll work!
I'm totally with you on being brought bags of stuff too - everytime DHs gran visits us or PIL there's a new bag of crap one of the cousins or aunts have passed along for DD. It's lovely they're thinking of her but it's so much and unnecessary.

Well done on the kitchen clear up purplefrog, I love the fresh shelf feeling haha. I've not long since gotten home but thinking I will tackle that cupboard I've been meaning to do.

That sounds plenty productive keiki! I had a look on eBay at sold prices for wedding dresses similar to mine and I think I could sell it (albeit for a fraction of the cost) but I have nothing else of worth!
I read somewhere that people buy empty perfume bottles on eBay too so I looked that up and it's true! You can sell an empty bottle for £2-3. I've got a couple coming to the end so will try make a bob or two.
Makes me wonder what other weird things people will buy and if I have any!

WoogleCone · 11/02/2019 18:35

The pic didn't attach lol, trying again!
