New home for the new year - still getting rid of one item a day part 6

Here we are again!

Little by little a group of mums netters have been decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day. Whether we eat it, bin it, recycle it, sell or give it away we are slowly tidying our homes.

Is this the thread where we finish? Probably not

As usual newbies are welcome to join us. We get rid of one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress and get support when it gets hard.

Previous thread is here

4 pairs of trousers and a skirt into the charity shop bag. I think I can probably lose a handbag too. I’m pretty sure I’ve not used it in 5 years, so there is obviously no need to keep it.

gassylady · 13/01/2019 20:38

Three unwanted gifts sold on eBay today so will post tomorrow will try and fit that tip run in as well to get rid of some cardboard

Gibble1 · 13/01/2019 23:57

I’m back from holiday and illness. Will catch up with thread tomorrow.

I've also done my tea cupboard, chucked some of it and moved the rest of the contents onto a cute tray with my canisters. I've put the herbal teas out so people can see them and if they're not gone in a month (I'm very patient!!) then I'll throw them. DH insists he like a jasmine tea every now and then so I'm going to move it onto the pantry shelf where we keep all the Chinese sauces and other ingredients. This means my tea cupboard, shelf actually, remains free for a new purpose.
Also out: freezer cup thing, pair of earrings which didn't clean up. I did go through all my jewellery and cleaned it and paired up earrings. I've got a few odd ones left but I'm hoping to find them down the back of our bookshelf bed - it's a two-person job to move it. I've put all the odd ones in one place.
I did also do the underwear drawer - 3 pairs out.

Betsy86 · 14/01/2019 07:23

Been awake for what feels like hours just cleaned the fridge and now playing race the recycling men they ate due anytime now and iv got a nice pile of extra bits to go in the bin.... also want to reclaim my bin soon as its emptied as I ordered new boxes and there so clean and lovely with nice new stickers on and i know there going to get swiped not a loser or a over protective bin owner at all lol

WoogleCone · 14/01/2019 09:24

Morning everyone.

Got a little tidying done this morning but felt quite harassed for the majority of the morning, I'm actually using work to chill out! One thing did make me smile though was getting a fresh teatowel out to discover DH has Kondo'd the tea towel drawer 😂

Might declutter the office at work today, it sure needs it!

Will check in later if I manage anything at home x

StealthNinjaMum · 14/01/2019 10:12

greenwillow sorry to hear it's a tough time of year for you.Flowers

Yesterday I found some age birthday cards for children that are younger than mine. I put them in the charity shop pile as I don't know anyone with toddlers or small children. I have a greetings card drawer which I should probably organise.

Today I am doing admin, online shopping and tidying my bedroom - putting clothes in my chestd of drawers. We have a massive 40 inch tv in our bedroom and stbexh is taking it so among other things I'll be buying a projector so I can have bedtime movie nights with dds but not have an ugly TV cluttering my dressing tAble.

My bedroom is possibly the worst room in the house (other than the room of doom) and I can't wait for dh to go so it can be clutterfree and my relaxing sanctuary.

Well done everyone. Still waiting for decorators. More baby stuff in. Got rid of a couple of cardboard boxes. And some shower gel that I started last July! (I'm not dirty, I started switching to solid soap last year so use that on many days!). Took some old paint cans to the tip. Considering putting some of DCs Christmas presents in the charity bag already, they are clearly not being touched and I doubt they will be missed. DC has far too much stuff and plays with only a small percentage of it. Would this be too mean?

PurpleFrog · 14/01/2019 13:38

In the past week I haven't done as much as I had hoped. I have mainly tidied and organised rather than got rid of stuff.

I still haven't sorted out any new stuff to sell - however, I did get my two large bundles of magazines sent off. That has meant that the large pile of knitting magazines that was sitting on top of the Billy bookcase in our bedroom has now gone inside the bookcase.

On Saturday I moved the random stuff off the top of the units in the living room. It was mainly dog toys that had been confiscated when lumps were bitten off them. I have not chucked any yet, but have a Tesco Bag For Life stuffed full of dog toys to be sorted. Blush The unit that has the broadband router on top has been dusted, the taller one will have to wait until I can move the stuff on the floor to be able to get a chair or steps in to reach. I also (almost) cleared the open shelf on the taller unit. I found some things at the back I had completely forgotten about including a pair of tall glass candlesticks that I received as a present but will probably never use. They may start the next Charity Shop box. I also sorted out a huge pile of receipts that DP had shoved into one of the drawers. I am not ready to sort out financial stuff yet, so am just filing it into the correct years for storage until I reach that point.

On the food front, I have finished the second out-of-date box of coffee pods. At some point soon, I need to go through the freezer and see what needs to be used up there. We never seem to have enough free space for everyday stuff.

RaspberryBlonde · 14/01/2019 14:18

Keiki I am wondering the same thing about Christmas presents, there are a couple of things which haven’t been looked at since they were opened. It does feel mean just to charity shop though, especially as some were given by family who will ask about them.

Purplefrog that sounds a pretty successful week to me!

Glad some the poorly people are on the mend. There’s a nasty bug doing the rounds of DD’s class which I am praying we avoid. Sorry to hear that you’re having a tough time GreenWillow

Cupboard rearranging in the kitchen is done so all the low down things are baby friendly. I am also pleased to discover we are not the only house with a tea cupboard! Suspect there is a lot of out of date stuff lurking. I also found one of DH’s ‘quick tidy up’ stashes in a drawer which needs sorting although most of it looks binnacle, hoping to do that later. Very much one item a day here still!

gassylady · 14/01/2019 15:15

Sounds like lots of progress on many fronts. Projector rather than large TV sounds great for family viewing.
I’ve done my eBay posting, dropped the cardboard at the tip. Also found lots of old lightbulbs and transformer plugs with no matching items to take too. Still no visible difference in many rooms

Mumof1DS · 14/01/2019 16:31

@gassylady i understand that disappointment of no visible difference! I'm thinking that if it focus on one room at a time it might...

Nothing achieved yesterday with a poorly DS. Let's see what tonight brings, if anything! Hopefully get rid of a good few bits from the loft.

reallyanothername · 14/01/2019 19:43

I'm more or less back in the land of the living after the worst cold in the world ever last week.... today I sorted through my youngest sons clothes ready to pass on to his cousin

StealthNinjaMum · 14/01/2019 20:17

The projector is a really cheap £60 one and only really works in darkness so is a rare treat for me and dds and it is a bonus that it is tiny and can fit in a drawer. I am stupidly excited.

I took a load of clutter in my bedroom and created another bloody box of doom. I found two teeth. Not sure which child they belonged to but I feel strangely attached to them. Please tell me to throw them out. There was also a clock someone bought dd2 for Xmas. It comes in a big box and I have brought a hammer upstairs and when I put it up it'll be a big box gone.

Hi everyone. I have been decluttering one thing a day this year so far and plan to continue. Old duvet covers, books gifted, using Freecycle and chucking rubbish. So far on track. Smile

bobgoblin · 14/01/2019 21:31

I haven't managed to do much for the last few days unless decluttering my emails counts. I had two years worth of emails in my inbox and I finally got to the end of them today. Now I just need to organise the ones I've kept into folders.

However, DH has finally got on board with the decluttering. He filed or shredded his own paperwork. Then did the same with a huge bag of paperwork that had belonged to FIL - he never threw anything away so this was a big job. He also put a coat and a pair of trousers in the textile recycling. He was even talking about sorting out the garage and getting rid of things from in there Shock. At the moment he is snoring loudly on the sofa and it's taking all of my willpower not to declutter him right now!

We had a charity bag through the door last week so the charity pile has gone in there and will leave the house tomorrow. I am going to try and sort out our bedroom over this week. It's very untidy which is stressing me out.

OublietteBravo · 14/01/2019 22:08

I only managed to get rid of some old (broken) hair bands and a random rosette. All of which were floating around in the box room gathering dust. Still better than nothing though.

PenelopeFlintstone · 15/01/2019 04:11

I'm going to look back through the thread for inspiration and find someone to copy Grin

Mumof1DS · 15/01/2019 06:49

Not much achieved after work yesterday. DS still poorly, so only managed to declutter an old gift bag and a hanger from DS' room - one of those annoying full body type hangers where you get a top and trouser set.
This was in between mopping up Envy #notenvy. He's definitely reached that point where it no longer smells like baby sick and just proper sick instead Envy

pippistrelle · 15/01/2019 09:06

Oh dear, Mum of1, I hope there's less vom in your life today.

My progress has stalled due to having friends staying with us at the moment. In fact, I had to bring a new duvet into the house as we didn't have enough for everyone. So I'll have to find somewhere to stash that when they've gone.

But I next have my eye on the baking cupboard. I know I have stuff in there that can go. I'm itching to get at it.

PenelopeFlintstone · 15/01/2019 10:10

One ugly top to charity shop bag. Way too big. Don't know what I was thinking when I bought that! Actually, I was probably thinking, "That's cheap. It'll do." I'm trying to be more discerning these days Smile

StealthNinjaMum · 15/01/2019 11:17

mumof1ds poor little thing, hope ds I should feeling better.

Last week I went through some papers and schoolwork and put it in a pile. I'm going to spend an hour shredding that pile and doing filing. A bank statement arrived today so I will file it TODAY!

Hello everyone! Mind if I (re)join you? I’ve been lurking on the thread and may have posted on it a while back but then life and work got in the way!

I’m now on mat leave with DC3 and am determined to declutter the house this year. Both DH and I are actually pretty minimalist but having 3 under 4 means we’re inundated with stuff mainly bought by family for the children.

My current plan is to work through each drawer and cupboard on the ground floor in turn, starting with the kitchen. In this way I’m forced to deal with the various drawers of doom which need desperate attention rather than going for the easy wins. So far I’ve done 6 drawers / cupboards including the dreaded spice cupboard. Only 18 more to go in this room - not sure how there are so many as it’s a small kitchen!

I too keep opening my drawers to admire how lovely they look!

Can’t remember who it was who has got their DH voluntarily Kondoing tea towels but I’m very impressed!

reallyanothername · 15/01/2019 13:51

The pile of paperwork that sits by the front door has been sorted today and a swift declutter of the kitchen sides including throwing away some plastic cups that are no longer fit for purpose

MotherWol · 15/01/2019 16:21

@mumof1ds with the trophies, if you're not sentimental about keeping them, you could put them on Freecycle? Or possibly if there's a local am-dram/theatrical group in your area they might want them as props?
