New home for the new year - still getting rid of one item a day part 6

Here we are again!

Little by little a group of mums netters have been decluttering our homes by getting rid of one item a day. Whether we eat it, bin it, recycle it, sell or give it away we are slowly tidying our homes.

Is this the thread where we finish? Probably not

As usual newbies are welcome to join us. We get rid of one thing and come back to update everyone on our progress and get support when it gets hard.

Previous thread is here

I'm currently in ds2's room and I'm aiming to get it all done today if I can stop taking breaks

I've already sorted out a nest of wires that used to belong to ds1 but had been shoved in a box to "sort out later" about 10years ago Blush

Some general rubbish and broken toys in the black sack destined for the bin. A charity puke of dress up costumes and a pile of washing to take down stairs but still so much more to do!

StealthNinjaMum · 12/01/2019 14:51

Good luck oubliette.

I just made the first of two chest of drawers for my bedroom as stbexh is taking 3 horrible ones. We have lots of storage already, much is empty but the wardrobe was rammed as was my underwear drawer so I'll be able to reorganise things. My clothes that don't fit and summer clothes now have a home and my 8 pairs of socks have a home. So far the only thing decluttered is dust behind an old chest of drawers and a single pair of socks but it will be lovely to be organised.

Finally got the Christmas decorations box up in the loft (it had been cluttering up the space in front of my wardrobe)

Did some tidying up in the garden, cutting back branches and weeding

Wrangled some glass bottles out of DS room then scarpered in case I was lost forever

Got another Charity Bag through the door (nothing to put in at the minute but I might do some wardrobe culling )

MsAwesomeDragon · 12/01/2019 15:31

I didn't do much this week as I was insanely busy this week. But on Thursday I did have a child tell me "X used to have a house like yours, but you know, tidy" which was a bit gutting.

I'm doing well today though. I've gone through our lightbulbs (I know, weird place to start but I had to replace a bulb so thought I'd organise them while I was there). I've replaced the 5 bulbs that had gone and we hadn't bothered replacing, so now my kitchen, hallway, landing and dining room are so much brighter (there's more than one bulb in each room, we weren't just sitting in the dark). I got rid of 3 boxes of old bulbs, the non energy saving ones, that we'd inherited from the previous owners of the house. And a box of bulbs that don't even fit any of our light fittings Hmm

I have just taken delivery of a new bookshelf that I'm about to build. It's for the living room, behind the sofa, to put MY stuff on (dd's toys have plenty of designated storage, as does all of dh's stuff, but my stuff has never had places to go). I'll be able to put textbooks and work items on there so I know where they are and where to put them back. It will empty at least one box of Doom, as those things will either have a new home or they will go out. I'm very motivated today because I'm trying to avoid writing reports

Mokepon · 12/01/2019 17:15

I'm going to catch up properly with the thread later but today...
Peg bag
Sweetie tin
Some old toys and clothes so 2 more bags for the charity shop.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/01/2019 17:45

I bought some gorgeous brushed cotton bedding last week, washed it (took for -bloody-ever to dry Hmm ) put it on the bed .

I said to DH "did you appreciate the lovely new bedding"?
He said "I didn't notice"

The TURD Shock

MsAwesomeDragon · 12/01/2019 18:08

70 that is horrific! How can he not notice nice new bedding?

gassylady · 12/01/2019 18:35

Just some more work journals today and some more socks and some ribbon for the textiles recycling

MsAwesomeDragon · 12/01/2019 19:09

My shelves are now built. They are looking all clean and bare without anything on them yet. I'll sort the box of Doom once DD is in bed, and put all my work stuff on the new shelves. It's making me happy just thinking about it Grin

Betsy86 · 12/01/2019 19:20

Culled some random bits in kitchen cupboards and going to eat some xmas nibbles later that are still in the way...
few odd socks some random packaging in bin. Have bagged up a black full of old clothes and couple of boots off dds that she never wears and are taking up space on shoe rack and should be selling that stuff to a regular buyer i often manage to sell bits to once dds grown out of it.
Theres alot in the bag but it’s no good to us im happy to get a tenner for it! That should be gone by tuesday im classing that as this weeks declutter effort!
Everyones doing really well it seems :) envious of the new drawers and shelving mentioned :)

StealthNinjaMum · 12/01/2019 19:38

How lovely awesomedragon, how sad is it that we are here Saturday nights arranging things on / in new furniture? I am loving my new furniture, my clothes will be so well organised.

I have also put a onesie in the charity shop pile, it was a present for me years ago.

MunchMunch · 12/01/2019 20:12

Well I can now see the floor in ds2's room!
Still not finished though, thrown out 2-3 black bags of rubbish, broken toys, tat, stained clothes etc, 2-3 bags for the charity shop and some of DD's monster high dolls and castle to photograph for eBay.
His bed is piled up with things to put away but I'll leave that until tomorrow as I'm now stiff and tired.

MsAwesomeDragon · 12/01/2019 20:16

It's not sad stealth, it's happy Grin. Maybe I'm starting to be a proper grown up now? I'm almost 40 and have an adult child (as well as a smaller one), so I suppose it's about time I grew up.

I've got a car load for charity shop /tip run again tomorrow. Between cardboard boxes, books and clothes dd2 has grown out of the get rid pile grows rather quickly.

pippistrelle · 12/01/2019 22:33

Not much left the house today, although a couple of empty cardboard boxes went in recycling. These were boxes for electrical appliances that I'd kept just in case there were any problems, and they needed to be returned: they'd been in the cupboard for seven months.

I did do lots of general tidying and cleaning though, including rarely cleaned things like doors and shower head, so you could say I removed dust, grime and limescale.

WoogleCone · 12/01/2019 23:34

Evening all

Just got home from work so I'll keep it brief as I'm tired haha.

Textiles all bagged up and ready to go, 4 bags worth. DHs stuff not done yet either so more to go.

Some cardboard in the new big Wheely bin being collected on Thurs.
Other recycling out of the kitchen.

Made a list of everything we want to achieve whilst on annual leave next week. Just 4 more shifts to go before I can sit down for a while!

SandAndSea · 13/01/2019 00:02

I've just finished a big admin job and am so relieved to have done it! I'm too wired to sleep so am heading for wine, chocolate and the tv.

I've also just discovered that my diary for this year is already falling apart which is so annoying! I'm going to have to buy another one and re-enter everything.

It sounds like you're all doing really well.
Well done, everyone! Star

Mumof1DS · 13/01/2019 01:23

Wow you've all been so productive over your Saturday! @70isalimitnotatarget, well that's just rude, how can he not notice new bedding?? I love new bedding days Smile

WoogleCone · 13/01/2019 08:34

I found some old stuff similar @mumof1ds, I did get rid. I'm really not sentimental though! I have a few keepsakes from bits and bobs but they're confined to 1 box and no more haha.
I have a rule that if I don't care to look at them and I don't care to display them then theyre gone.

Very tired this morning, I need to stop doing late shifts, they're killing me slowly! Boss said he'll swap one night a week with me so I just need to sort the other one. Back there in a couple of hours so my decluttering efforts will be small today. Perhaps I can do a kitchen cupboard while cooking later!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/01/2019 09:05

I decluttered some random Christmas chocolate into crispy cakes.
My 18yo decluttered some of them down his throat Wink

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/01/2019 09:06

Oops he's 19yo ( he keeps telling me how "Adult" he is- and even grown-up-sons need crispy cakes Grin )

OublietteBravo · 13/01/2019 11:21

I threw out some bottles of hair products this morning. All of them had been hanging around for 3 or 4 years, most of them were almost empty. I bet DD doesn’t even notice that they’ve gone.

I think I need to do a first pass through the bathroom drawers/cupboards next.

How on earth do you dispose of coat hangers? We seem to have hundreds of the damn things. Mostly flimsy plastic ones with a metal hanging hook, which obviously came free with clothing purchases.

I give all my unwanted coat hangers to my mum for the charity shop she volunteers in. I don't know if all charity shops need them or if it's just hers for some reason (maybe they recycle them, they have somebody who buys all toys no matter how crap for recycling/repurposing so possibly the same man takes coat hangers). Could be worth asking a couple of charity shops if they take them.

I've taken 25 children's books and a black sack of children's clothes to the charity shop today. I also took a boot full of cardboard boxes for recycling. Then I stopped and did something more fun :)
