Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge Part 5

StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 17:18

We’re still here!

For 4 threads a group of mumsnetters have been getting rid of just one thing a day. We’ve been throwing out, selling, recycling and giving our stuff away.

But we're still not finished.

Newbies are always welcome to join us. Just get rid of one thing each day and come back here to discuss your progress and get support when it gets hard.

@IWillWearTheGreenWillow - Where I live, we can recycle plastic so I would bin the tape and recycle the cases.

I've just ticked off a boring admin job which has been hanging around.

Last night, I promised myself I will finish my chair today. It's been seatless for over a year. I have all the stuff, I've just got to do it. (I don't want to do it.)

StealthNinjaMum · 07/11/2018 13:47

keiki sorry for your loss Flowers.

bowerbird you're getting rid of your kitchen? I would love a new kitchen - if only to have to declutter it and design it with extra storage. (And no see through glass doors that you can see the clutter through like I currently have).

green willow are they like proper films or just things you've videoed yourself? If they're films you could see if anyone wants them on free cycle or Facebook. I'm lucky, my charity shops take them. I also still have two working video recorders so my children watch my childhood videos. I have a pile of about ten home recorded videos, I mentioned this earlier on the thread, and I'd like to copy them into digital because some might be rare / unusual 1980s Top of the pops and live aid and stuff.

Having a break from upholstering. It is far from my forte. I just have to keep telling myself it will definitely look much better with a seat on it.

The good news is that I am finally using up the bag of wadding, fabric and 2 packs of upholstery pins which have been hanging around for years.

RaspberryBlonde · 07/11/2018 16:55

New kitchen sounds exciting bowerbird.

Sandandsea however much upholstering is not your forte I would have no idea where to start!

Keiki you have reminded me I have a big bag of batteries for recycling. Unfortunately I will have to hang on to them for another fortnight as the collection was this morning.

Today's items were some old nappy cream which had split and an empty cab of deodorant which did some reason had been returned to the bathroom cabinet Hmm

SandAndSea · 07/11/2018 18:03

Finished the chair!! Woop-woop!!! Grin

@IWillWearTheGreenWillow - Haha! No, I can't even begin to guess. He certainly sounds very trying.

I'm not sure why I put it off so much tbh. I think not wanting to mess it up is part of it. It wasn't enjoyable for me either - lots of broken pins - it gave me the rage tbh. I'm utterly relieved it's done though.

bumblebee39 · 07/11/2018 20:53

Well threw away a perfectly good toilet roll after DD drowned the whole bathroom having a bath so that's one thing down... Also declutterd a cream cheese and box of crackers earlier... Better day tomorrow...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/11/2018 21:25

Set of bathroom scales - they vary wildly depending if they're on carpet or tile.
DH bought some new state-of-the-art digital ones so the old ones can go.

I'm going to go through my kitchen baking ware sometime . There are things I haven't used for ages (but if I do get rid of them, you can bet I;ll need them Hmm )

StealthNinjaMum · 07/11/2018 21:39

Ooh Greenwillow your FIL sounds annoying fun.

You should do a live thread update of his complaints. My mil - who is generally lovely but a bit lacking in social skills - always insults my food or any processed food in the house. Processed food pretty much includes everything even stock cubes and marmelade as mil makes her own stock.

Is he staying over? I think he's going to say the bed is too crumbly.

Thanks @Stealth @IWill

Tonight I sorted out another 4 inches of paperwork for recycling and 1 inch for shredding. Also a couple of books for the charity shop.

Well done everyone.

ememem84 we also have the formula scoops in our cutlery drawer - why? Am going to bin them NOW.

Yesterday I took a bag of clothes to charity shop and another to H&M to claim a voucher which I didn’t get to use as the jumper I wanted was reduced to a tenner anyway. Win!

Whilst cooking tea last night I found a few packets of dried goods past their sell by date and chucked a few packets of stuff with about a teaspoon of food left in. This meant I got back loads of food bag clips.

I have my eye on my make up and nail varnishes for this weekends clearout. I am putting off dealing with my craft stash as I know how much money I’ve spent on it and it’s making me sad I can’t seem to sell it. I know I am being daft - I might harden myself to the idea of chucking stuff by the weekend. Maybe...

Keiki · 08/11/2018 09:48

IWill it helps that I can take it into work, where the shredder can take about 20 pages at once so it's actually quite fun to do. Doing it on a little one at home that keeps overheating is a chore I agree. Done mine this morning. Does it count twice? Once for sorting it out of the folders, and once for actually getting it out of the house? Grin Blush

SandAndSea · 08/11/2018 11:07

So far today, I'm getting rid of another pair of jeans. I'm hoping to do more later.

LavenderBush · 08/11/2018 11:16

Greenwillow I don't suppose your FIL could be the one thing a day that you get rid of? You could try the charity shop...

SandAndSea · 08/11/2018 11:49

And another pair of jeans.

DP and I have a deal in which, when he realises his clothes feel bad, rather than continuing to wear them, washing them and then forgetting to charity them, he takes them off and charitys them straight away. It's actually working! I think it's because he's been experiencing good results with all the clearing - he can see what he's got to wear much easier now and must feel better in himself wearing more uplifting clothes. (In the past, he wasn't that interested but I think he can see now that it's worthwhile.)

I've also decluttered some ingrained wax drips from a wicker place mat, by baking it in the oven.

Good luck IWill

I spent another hour and a half doing filing last night. It seems to be never ending! Second load of washing of the day on already.

bumblebee39 · 09/11/2018 07:35

Got a suitcase full of paperwork in the bottom of my wardrobe which I have to sort today and need to sort out DDs clothes when she's at school.

Got rid of an old battered suitcase yesterday and got one more to go... Just need to sort out what I'm storing in them, one more to go and one so it's usable (or I can hide Xmas presents in it although I am planning a trip before then).

Going to do my whites with strain remover and anything that comes out stained is getting put on the scrap heap.

Got a busy day, lots to do! Yesterday was hectic so didn't get much of a chance but today it's my no1 commitment!

Hatstand · 09/11/2018 09:52

Back after a lengthy absence, I've managed to gift the spare highchair and some books. A big stash of giftbags has gone to the charity shop. And my regift pile is slowly turning into a Christmas present pile!

StealthNinjaMum · 09/11/2018 10:07

GreenWillow don't worry for as long as I have clutter in my house the thread will be alive! I couldn't possibly tell anyone in real life about the amount of clutter and mess I have.

I have been quiet recently, mums net hasn't been working on the iPad but they seem to have fixed that. Also I'm plodding on getting rid of paperwork and crappy bits of plastic where I see them. Yesterday I put a load of non facebook sales items into a bag to go to the charity shop. I opened a craft set I was giving away and discovered a child had already removed half of it so I took it apart. Some bits are in the craft drawer and others are being recycled.

I have just done a big list of jobs for today. Lots of admin and clearing surfaces that are a mess again. Also I am going to iron a summer dress that has been hanging in the utility room since August! I haven't been in the room of doom for a week - my big project is to clear that by the christmas holiday. By clear I mean just get it to a stage where everything is tidied away and you can see the carpet and maybe use the computer.

It sounds like you're all doing really well.

I've got a jumper going out today and I'm doing a tip run.
