We’re still here!

For 4 threads a group of mumsnetters have been getting rid of just one thing a day. We’ve been throwing out, selling, recycling and giving our stuff away.

But we're still not finished.

Newbies are always welcome to join us. Just get rid of one thing each day and come back here to discuss your progress and get support when it gets hard.

I have been forcing myself to do something every evening this week. I emptied a large box that has been sitting on the kitchen floor for about a year. It has been bugging me recently as it is preventing me opening some cupboard doors fully. Some of its contents went out, other bits have been put in carrier bags which take up a lot less space. The box itself went to the recycling site along with the large one from the landing I emptied at the weekend. I also emptied a wine box that had been sitting in the kitchen since last Christmas. It was a present, and although we have drunk most of the original wine, I have been putting odd bottles in it throughout the year. But, I discovered that we actually had enough space to empty it into the bottom cupboard that we usually keep wine and bottles of soft drinks in. So, that box has been hoovered out and is waiting to go in the loft. It isn't as substantial as some of the wine boxes I have, so might become a charity shop box rather than a storage box. I also chucked out more paperwork, magazines and some smaller empty boxes into the paper recycling bin for yesterday's collection.

Well done purplefrog. Isn't it amazing how we can just live with and around something like a big box? It's wonderful when it's gone.

I have had a good day. Not done all my list but I have some children coming over for a playdate after school so I might see if I can call it movie night and stick them in front of the TV while I do a pizza and popcorn and run around finishing my list. I have done loads today. Lots of filing and shredding. I have put one top in the charity shop pile but I have a boot full of stuff to go to the charity shop again.

I know. It's amazing how you quickly you begin to accept things as normal and not question them. Each time I've gone up to bed this week I've got a surprise when I've seen the newly-created space down my side of the bed. I've realised I had been edging past things for months...

StealthNinjaMum · 09/11/2018 17:58

TV on. Pizza on. Children sitting still while I whizz round finishing my list. Dh is out tonight so hopefully I can get dc to bed early as I am unusually motivated.

Decantered some bubble bath into a soap bottle. We don’t have a bath and it is too thick for showering with but just right for pumping onto hands. Got rid of the bottle.took the paper out of 24 exercise books from school. And will use it for quiz nights and the used bit for lighting the fire. Have two jigsaws ready to go to two litttle boys at church for Sunday.
Cooker and dishwasher and worktops!

TidaQuel · 09/11/2018 22:53

I joined you all a while ago but have failed pretty miserably so far....... I did manage to chuck a stash of old papers and brochures a while ago, sold a few bits of clothing and I have a big bag for a charity shop.

I also sorted a bag of ‘prize’ type bits to donate to the school’s Christmas fair.

Tomorrow I will sort through some more bits. I need to stick to one place to try and make a visible difference...... on

oopslateagain · 09/11/2018 23:33

OMFG I just did the cupboard in my bedroom!

It''s a big walk-in and was literally hip-deep in bags and boxes and stuff that I'd just chucked in to get it "out of sight".

I have a bag of socks that I need to pair up (and probably bin half of), a bag of bras and tops that I shoved in there when I piled on some weight and were too good to bin, a bag of gloves/scarves/hats for the winter that I'd forgotten all about and a bag of clothes that need repairing that have been there for years so they're in a rag-bag for the charity shop now.

The cupboard now only has things that were supposed to be there, and I can walk in it!

The cat is pissed off. She liked to sleep buried in the big pile of crap.

RaspberryBlonde · 10/11/2018 08:46

Sounds like a good job oopslateagain, hope the cat gets over it soon though, hell hath no fury like a pissed off cat!

I persuaded DH to help me go through our big storage cupboard in the dining room last night and managed to clear enough space to put away the new plates we bought the other week that have been living on the dining table. There's a bunch of spare glasses (8 cheap champagne flutes that were bought for a party last year and some spare everyday glasses) that can go in the garage until we next need them, plus a water jug that we will never use which can go for regifting. Also managed to bin a couple of bits. The cupboard is still full but it's progress. At some point though I do need to convince DH that we don't need a three tier system of wineglasses!

Also trying to sort out our regift pile, we have a couple of birthdays coming up plus donations needed for DD's school Christmas fete but DD's birthday is early December so at best it's going to be one out one in!

Hope FiL is behaving himself GreenWillow...

Well done oopslateagain I need to do my wardrobe at some point. There's a shelf I can't reach unless I stand on a ladder and it's very disorganised - boxes on scarves, loose shoes. One of those you open the doors and await something to jump off the shelf landing on your head.

GreenWillow I love your update! That's so funny. My inlaws are great most of the time but I wouldn't want them too close.

Last night I was quite industrious. I tested loads of biros - some were from companies I worked for fifteen years ago - and lots got binned. I also went through christmas decorations and some angels made out of toilet rolls have gone! Hope dd1 doesn't remember them.

Feel incredibly guilty about how much stuff we don't use. I have taken 10 boxes, numerous bags to charity shops and tip know me by now as I did about 6 trips on one day. We have still not finished! I spent Friday sorting and still more to go. I am not particularly spendy but the amount we have in the house is beyond stupid

SandAndSea · 10/11/2018 19:18

Today's item is a tatty, old throw. I have replaced it but I'm still counting it as it's such an improvement.

hormonallyspeaking · 10/11/2018 20:34

I hope you don't mind me joining! We moved into a flat and had a baby in September and since then crap seems to be piling up. I'm hoping I can start small and make a difference.

Today I gave away some free samples of laundry detergent, a box of washing pods that gave me and DP a reaction, three extra bottles of anti bacterial spray that I'd be saving for some reason?

Finally chucked lots of socks with holes and sorted through baby clothes that no longer fit. Some books have been set aside for donations. I have a signed first edition of The Fault in our Stars that I've been keeping because it's signed, I'll be honest I read it and didn't like it all too much so don't know why I've kept it.

Now I just have to figure out what to do with the baby clothes. Do charity shops take baby clothes? It seems like a silly question but I have no idea.

PenelopeFlintstone · 10/11/2018 22:15

Yes, they do, HormonallySpeaking.

SandAndSea · 10/11/2018 23:44

Welcome, @hormonallyspeaking! And well done on a good start!

bumblebee39 · 11/11/2018 00:42

Brought lots of new storage containers file boxes etc. Today can't wait to have a really good sort out.

Threw all the junk from under the pram away and sorted out the changing bag. Threw away my DDs hoody which the zip has gone on and I'll never get round to fixing.

Also threw out an old washing up sponge and sorted out my handbag.

Good day but could be better!

KittyB52 · 11/11/2018 07:52

Morning all!

While I was waiting for the kettle to boil yesterday, I sorted through some bits of paper and card in our ‘crap drawer’ in the kitchen. For some reason, we had kept the paper instructions you get with dummies and bottles - DD is almost 20 months, I think we know what they do by now. Grin

I delved into the ‘coats wardrobe’ and found several pairs of shoes I’d forgotten about - all still with the labels on. Blush Have photographed them for EBay, listing today, if they don’t sell this week, they are going to charity shop.

I’ve also sold a few things from my craft stash. Just need to work up the energy to list some of DDs clothes. I might bundle stuff together to see if they sell that way.

Nail varnish didn’t go to the tip, as DH ended up not going. I will compensate by going through my make up and chucking some bits. I’m also going to look in my undies drawer as there are bras and pants that need chucking too.

So far, today's items are another pair of jeans and a shell. I hate it when people take shells etc from the beach so I'm going to take it back to the beach asap.

I've also binned a glass jar and lid - the type I normally keep. And, I caught myself washing up an empty handwash container, you know, "just in case I need it one day" !!!!! It's now also in the recycling.

I've been thinking recently about digital clutter as I have thousands of unread emails which I need to delete at some point. I've just accidentally deleted all my phone's shortcuts - it feels like a start! Grin
