Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge Part 5

StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 17:18

We’re still here!

For 4 threads a group of mumsnetters have been getting rid of just one thing a day. We’ve been throwing out, selling, recycling and giving our stuff away.

But we're still not finished.

Newbies are always welcome to join us. Just get rid of one thing each day and come back here to discuss your progress and get support when it gets hard.

I'm jealous of people who can walk around their beds! My bedroom is superficially tidy at the moment because we're having new windows but I really just shoved everything in a box which is sitting on a chair taunting me with its chaos.

As well as a toy being picked up I also put a christmas decoration in the charity shop pile and ddd1 let me throw away a large nativity scene she made I think in preschool. Surprisingly I don't feel attached and I'm glad it's going. I also worked through a load of unanswered emails and deleted about 500.

Gosh, this looks like the thread for me.......
my problem is that I hate waste so always keep stuff until I can rehome it, but I really need to get rid of piles of stuff.
I did have a clear through my wardrobe at the weekend.... but only because I had to take everything out in order to find something that I knew was in there ( a pair of white jeggings, since you ask.... I managed to squeeze into them for the costume party but really they should be rehmed too as they definitely aren't comfortable.)
Is it worth trying to shift clothes on ebay or does it require too much effort for too little return - I don't have much designer stuff (if any...)

ememem84 · 05/11/2018 17:35

marianne try eBay or shpock. I use eBay and have mixed results. But more often than not things sell at the third attempt. Try and get selling deals too. I think there’s a sell for £1 at present. And £100 free listings.

SandAndSea · 05/11/2018 21:03

Welcome, @MarianneAgain! I've had something for sale on Ebay for quite a while (months) now. It was a free ad so I've just left it there. I don't understand what makes something sell really as I've sold all sorts of things I wouldn't have guessed would go so easily and been left with other things I thought would sell. It's a weird old business.

Nothing out today but I have been preparing for tomorrow's 'homeless' collection. I've been sorting and washing and have quite a pile of bulky, winter clothes, which I will be very pleased to be free of. It's at least 7 items so a week's worth of my 1-a-day in one hit and no bastard CEOs skimming off the top! Grin

bumblebee39 · 05/11/2018 21:09

Thrown away all my empty medication packets and boxes today. The ones I don't take anymore will be dropped to the chemist ASAP

Don't know what to do with an old tub of diet pills but I will definitely never take them again worst waste of money ever...

Used up all the veg in the fridge for the stew which meant I got to just throw the packets and minimal trimmings in the bin whereas normally the food would go in the bin after it got forgotten which is a win!

Managed not to buy anything unnecessary today which is progress of kinds...

Will do better tomorrow!

bumblebee39 · 05/11/2018 21:15

Also threw out all the unnecessary crap out the fridge that was iffy instead of holding onto it for no reason.

Going to start a "odd sock bag" and then any left over at the end of the month and unpaired will get binned or reused as dusters.

I am having a clean tomorrow (Hoover, mop, kitchen, bathroom etc.)
But going to start sorting through my paper work after that.

Also sorted out my email inbox which is a win for me!
I am going to stop getting new store cards and throw the ones I don't use too.

Getting excited, love decluttering. Wish there were more hours in the day!

Also decluttering a pouch of roule cheese and a box of crackers shortly...

ememem84 · 05/11/2018 21:18

Haven’t thrown anything away today but I bought a cork board for the kitchen so I can pin things up instead of having them piled up (gift vouchers, calendar, invites etc) so it clears clutter away.

Ooh I forgot. Yesterday I ditched my fave denim shirt (it ripped on my last wear 😭 )and a pair of socks

Bowerbird5 · 06/11/2018 07:14

Hi Marianne, I have same problem plus sentimental about kids stuff and presents people have bought for me.

Have been here for a few days but have been busy. Went through kitchenboards and threw out some out of date stuff. Gave pans to son. Getting rid of kitchen cupboards, shelves, Rayburn and electric cooker and a dishwasher this week.

SandAndSea · 06/11/2018 10:44

4 flyers which have been hanging around for ages are finally in the recycling. I've copied the contact details into my address book so I've got them properly stored if I need them.

MarianneAgain · 06/11/2018 11:54

Took a big bag of glass to the bottlebank on my way to work earlier.... it's not me that drinks the beer / juice but no one else thinks its their job to get rid of the pile of bottles.... need to make another run really as there was too much for one trip.
The trouble with glass is that if I don't make a second trip this week I'll be back where I started by the end of next week: it might be easy to declutter it, but it doesn't stay decluttered for long.

I'm on a roll!

Washing machine and DW are on.
Paperwork filed.
Dining room table cleared and cleaned.
Bra and magazine out.

SandAndSea · 06/11/2018 15:21

Oh and I broke a plate and felt nothing but OK about it! All this clutter clearing is really paying off in lots of ways.

bumblebee39 · 06/11/2018 16:37

Sorted out my purse so lots of old receipts bus tickets etc. In the bin. Also sorted out the kids stuff and threw away all the broken crap.

It's definitely easy to start because there is sooo much to go but know this will get harder as it goes on.

RaspberryBlonde · 06/11/2018 16:57

Oh yes, know what you mean about recycling clutter. We have a box to store it before it goes into the wheelie bin outside and it's constantly full! DH just leaves stuff in the kitchen rather than empty it. Very annoying!

Today's item was an empty box that once held beer. And the aforementioned recycling as it's bin collection day tomorrow. Am a bit lacking in motivation at the moment.

ememem84 · 06/11/2018 19:44

Nothing today but I’ll make up for it tomorrow. Have the next theee days off work so am going to finish the new house organising

Keiki · 06/11/2018 22:36

Sadly a relative recently passed away, so I'll have more of their stuff cluttering my place soon. Seems they were a hoarder but I can't bin bottles and bottles of perfectly good cleaning products and shower gels!

On the decluttering front, I binned a few home recorded dvds, a few official dvds that I have no desire to watch in the charity shop bag, and started sorting through the paperwork folders that haven't been touched for 4 years. 3 folders done, a few pages to keep but mostly shredding and recycling. To be continued tomorrow but feeling productive! Once I.know what paperwork I have left I can get rid of some folders too.

Bowerbird5 · 06/11/2018 23:23

I ate some bread pudding so the plastic can be put into recycling😁

Sorted some magazines to go out tomorrow, two socks, some odd towels for charity shop on the way to work.

Does my kitchen count as it is getting ripped out tomorrow?

Gibble1 · 07/11/2018 00:01

Yes! Thebkitchen counts! Cause you’ll no doubt have reassessed what you need in there whilst emptyingbit 😀

ememem84 · 07/11/2018 07:17

Kitchen counts!!!

DItched some small plastic pots from weaning ds. Too tiny to actually do anything with now and no use to anyone else I know. So they’re gone.

Also 11 scoops from formula packs. Why did I keep all of these?! And one of ds’ bottles which has somehow gone orange. I used it this morning to clean my make up brushes.

Have also ditched a green eyeliner pencil. Why I bought this I never know. It doesn’t suit me at all. So that’s gone.

Keiki · 07/11/2018 10:30

This talk of bottles reminds me that I should probably bin the old teats and buy some new ones ready for next year.

Finally remembered to take the collection of dead batteries in to the battery bin at work.

I do want to buy a new rug for the lounge, the current one is disgusting so one in one out when I find one I like.
