Getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge Part 5

StealthNinjaMum · 01/10/2018 17:18

We’re still here!

For 4 threads a group of mumsnetters have been getting rid of just one thing a day. We’ve been throwing out, selling, recycling and giving our stuff away.

But we're still not finished.

Newbies are always welcome to join us. Just get rid of one thing each day and come back here to discuss your progress and get support when it gets hard.

@StealthNinjaMum - YANBU. Buyers are amongst the biggest load of CFs I've ever met.

StealthNinjaMum · 03/11/2018 11:20

Thanks GreenWillow I just feel irrational that I would rather give something away for free now rather than this person who offered money!

Have hoovered one room and instantly the house looks better. I am feeling like today is going to be a good day.

More clutter clearing today, following a shopping trip with DP. I think our house must be quite dark because, whilst we were out, I suddenly noticed that his jacket was really worn. It's now been replaced and 2 bulky, old ones are going out. (I'm going to try to sell one; the other is too knackered.) Also going out are a jumper and belt - both too worn to keep. He's also been moaning about his jeans so I think they'll be going too but he's still wearing them at the moment.

oopslateagain · 03/11/2018 20:38

Not a good week for decluttering, I've had a rotten cold and cough and CBA to do anything much. I did throw away all the rubbishy Halloween decorations that we've had for about five years, a big carrier bag full of past-its-best cobwebby stuff and paper bunting. (I did keep the plastic spiders!)

I've sorted magazines, I now have all unread magazines in a huge pile (I really mean huge, it's over 2 feet high). I wish I could just throw them out or donate them but I haven't read them and it seems such a waste. They're craft and cooking so don't really go out of date. I need to curl up on these cold winter evenings and actually read them.

SandAndSea · 04/11/2018 09:32

Change of plan... Apparently, our local homeless people are in desperate need of warm clothes so I'm giving DP's jackets etc directly to them. (No CF buyers and no CF Charity CEOs pocketing the profits.)

RaspberryBlonde · 04/11/2018 10:34

Went away for a week over half term and fell off the thread. Need to read through and catch up as you all seem to have been very busy!

The bag of toys I sorted out to get rid of 6 weeks ago has not been missed so will be chucking that once DD is back at school tomorrow.

Gibble1 · 04/11/2018 13:17

I’ve just got rid of an inch deep pile of paperwork and have more to go on the fire later.
I’m having an admin in my pyjamas day today so hoping to get lots done!

PawneeParksDept · 04/11/2018 13:29

@SandAndSea

I hear you.

The charity shop I volunteer in has left me with a lot of qualms

I wish there was a better way.

ememem84 · 04/11/2018 14:34

Dsis took some DVDs today. Yay. Have put up some pictures so have decluttered the floor.

Have unboxed ds’ toys and have tipped them all into an under bed storage box. It fits right under our couch. So can be put away neatly when we’re not using it.

bumblebee39 · 04/11/2018 14:45

Sounds like Lots of you have been doing this for a while but I am going to start today.
Yesterday finally cleared out my older DCs room and contributed a lot of broken toys which went out with this mornings bin.
I seem to be buying a lot recently as kids have grown etc. But not getting rid of the old stuff. Also need to make some space to hide Xmas presents!

Today I am getting rid of a few very significant items from my home: my ashtray and lighters. Time to quit for good and I'm less likely to go back if the paraphernalia is also gone. Not even a toke shall pass my lips.

I will also be sorting out my medication when DCs go to bed and getting rid of anything I no longer take. I will drop it into the pharmacy when I next get my repeats as I know it can't go in normal waste.

I am also going to start throwing away old magazines and newspapers, but cutting the bits out I really want to read or that have puzzles I like because that's why I hold onto them.

Then this weeks agenda is: anything that reminds me of my abusive ex, sort out my food cupboards and start chipping away at it.

I want to get clutter free so bad. One thing a day definitely sounds doable! I don't want DC3 to be born into a cluttered house and know another DC will bring its own mess etc. Anyway.

So out with the old, in with the new, but reduce overall!

SandAndSea · 04/11/2018 14:56

Welcome, @bumblebee39!

bumblebee39 · 04/11/2018 15:50

Thanks @SandAndSea xx

ememem84 · 04/11/2018 15:58

Just ditched a load of cardboard boxes into the recycling.

Put ds’ books on his bookshelf, emptying the box they were in. Took two pairs of shoes out of their boxes and popped them into the shoe tub.

Unpacked some lovely jo Malone candles which were given as house warming gifts. Threw the boxes away.

Have listed a pair of shoes on eBay.

Am currently decluttering a box of maltesers

Annasgirl · 04/11/2018 15:58

Very busy day yesterday. Cleared out and reorganised my main food cupboard - so neat and tidy now. I also decluttered and reorganised my "messy press" which contains all our medicine, vitamins and stationary!! So nice to have both cleared. I also managed to clear off the kitchen counter and put in a space for charging phones etc and keeping sunglasses and paperwork.

And I put four old electrical items which no longer work into the boot of my car to take to electrical recycling. can't move to-day though.

StealthNinjaMum · 04/11/2018 15:59

Welcome bumblebee39. Some of us have been on these threads for over a year. Don't let that put you off, my house (life maybe) is a million times better and I am teaching my family and me better routines.

That said I am about to have the usual Sunday afternoon rant scream about my family throwing their shoes and coats and swimming kits down in the hall way so the first impression of my house is that it's a rubbish dump.

Today I bought a 6 foot Christmas tree. I don't know whether to keep the other two. They're only 4 ft 6. I thought I'd have a tree in the dining room, one in the sitting room and one on the landing. Dh thinks we already have too many Christmas decorations but it's a relatively big house. I don't know whether to give one to charity or keep all three. The new one will have to go in the loft.

Today's item is a pair of child's wellies and a chair that someone is hopefully going to collect.

I need this thread in my life! Baby on the way and house is so cluttered 😭. Today so far I've burnt some junk mail - used it to start a lovely fire. DH is not on board with decluttering. If he doesn't watch out, he might find himself getting decluttered 😂

bumblebee39 · 04/11/2018 16:10

Well if this counts my skittles habit is going to make this easy!

StealthNinjaMum · 04/11/2018 16:11

Chair has gone! It's been sitting in the Room of Doom for about 8 years. Yay!

Welcome firstbornunicorn. My dh wasn't on board, his parents never throw things away (they just buy more sheds in the garden to store things in), but slowly he has come on board and chucked a reasonable amount of his own stuff away. It will get better.

ememem84 · 04/11/2018 16:13

bumblebee yes. It counts. The box wouldn’t fit in the cupboard. So it needed to go. Haha!

Oh , I have a Cookery folder /book that I started when I was 18yo (I'm now 52! ) I cannot remember the last time I used it , either I know the recipes off by heart or I can get them online.

I have a frying pan that sticks , I need to get a replacement for it . It's massive though so I'll miss it , but I was scraping pancakes off it last night so it's blotted its copy book.

Bag of random clothes to go to the Charity shop and a pair of DH boots.

DD winter bedding , I treated her to a new set so once I get into the attic to retrieve it , that can go too.

ememem84 · 04/11/2018 21:18

Just cleared out my jewellery box. Gone are the icky earrings which make my ears hurt. Gone are the cheap ne klaces which turn my neck a bit grubby.

It now looks tidier and neater. I can see what I have. Love what I see.

StealthNinjaMum · 05/11/2018 10:57

Well done you GreenWillow giving clutter back to owners.

My toy has hopefully been bought by someone for the asking price. I am so glad I did not sell it to the cheeky person.

I have started on a big to do list for today. Lots of admin, the house is a mess and I need to do 3 or 4 loads of washing.

I have put one child's jumper in the charity shop pile. That pile is huge so I am going to put some bags in the car again and add some toys that haven't sold on Facebook for a few weeks. I also have to throw away a bag that used to have a child's chair in it except dd1 broke that chair years ago and for some reason I have been looking at that bag hanging neatly in the cupboard under the stairs ever since and not chucked it out!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow - I'd like to announce that I can now walk all the way around my bed without falling over anything...

Me too! That was my major accomplishment this weekend. I emptied a large box that had been sitting between our bed and the wardrobe. Some bits went beside the tools in the loft, other bits went out. I then hoovered out the box and put in it the remaining pictures that came from my Mum's house when we sold it. That meant that the really large box they had been sitting in on the landing has now been flattened and is ready for the recycling site. I cleared the floor right round the bed to hoover, and put things back neatly - I hope to sort out more of the remaining stuff there this week. I can't get over how much space there is beside the bed now. I also washed and dried a few large shelves from a cage that had been stacked on the landing, and they have been packed up in cardboard and put in the loft together with the fish tank and hood I tackled last weekend. I took the opportunity to give that part of the landing a much-needed clean. I also got round to cleaning the bathroom and downstairs toilet, including their floors which have not been done for ages a little while. In the process of doing that, I finished off two of the almost-finished bottles of cleaning solutions sitting on the windowsill of the downstairs toilet.
