The Organised Mum Method

IcanDorisIwillDoris · 02/09/2018 15:35

Does anyone fancy joining me in following the organised mum method?

Back to work tomorrow after the summer off (work term time only) and need to get on top of a house work routine after struggling this last year or so to stay on top of things.

I suffer with anxiety and can easily get lost in my mood without structure and I like what I saw on the website. Will probably tweek the method as I go but it's a good structured plan to kick things off.

I work odd hours around the kids being at school but have a clear hour each day to dedicate to this. Plus I am sick of losing my weekends to playing catch up when I could be doing nicer things with the kids!!

Four of us in a 4 bed semi which is clean, just full of stuff that comes with having kids. It can get pretty messy!

Have done the odd bit of decluttering over the summer which has made a bit of a difference!

Looking forward to having a house that doesn't embarrass me on the odd occasion a guest arrives unannounced Blush

We've got guests this evening, so today will have to be a bit more bootcampy so that the house is presentable. Everywhere is a bit of a mess, so I need to get up and do some work.

Littlechocola · 13/09/2018 13:51

I did nothing in the end yesterday as was out of the house from 06:00 to 22:00.
I’m hoping to be home by 20:00 today so I can do level 1 jobs at least!
If not I’m off tomorrow.

welshmist · 13/09/2018 13:56

Weather was glorious so went out, kitchen can wait.

Booksandpens · 13/09/2018 14:40

Downstairs is almost ready, just need to mop the floors after the school run. Stairs that were clear yesterday need sorting again, and hopefully I'll have time (and energy) to sort out upstairs a bit.

BookishOwl · 13/09/2018 14:47

I'm a bit poorly so had asleep this morning but still managed to do the kitchen for 30 minutes (floor hoovered but not mopped but I can live with that under the circumstances).

Level 1 all done except bathroom (I'll wipe round while kids are getting ready for bed) and laundry is still in dryer so will put away after school run

Feeling good that I can still feel I've done useful stuff.

mrsm43s · 13/09/2018 14:51

Well I'm heading towards the end of the first week of TOMM. So far so good!

I do find the timescales pretty unrealistic. Even the daily routine - there's no way I can put on a load of washing, clean and wipe down two bathrooms and hoover the downstairs in 15 minutes - however clean the starting point, that takes me 30 mins at least. (And I'm not even including bed making in that, as we do ours when we get up, and I'm not making the kids ones for them!) And the daily stuff like "bedrooms" - hoover/dust/change bedding etc - fine if you have one bedroom or maybe 2, but we have 5, so no way can I do that in 30 mins. Plus there's lots of rooms she doesn't account for on her plan - dining room, study, utility etc, which I'm having to add on to other rooms (e.g. kitchen and utility on a Thursday, Sitting room and dining room on a Monday, Hall stairs landing and study on a Wednesday etc. I reckon daily I need 30 mins for the daily routine, plus 45m to an hour for the target area.

Strugging to find the time to fit it in on top of full time working - my house certainly looks cleaner for it, though!

DH hasn't quite grasped the daily clean. On his days, he didn't do it because "you only did it yesterday!" He did his target areas well enough though :)

JessicaPeach · 13/09/2018 14:54

Mrs M you don’t need to clean them fully, just give anywhere that needs it a quick wipe and maybe do the loo one day, sink the next day. Same with the bedrooms, if you have a big house then just do what you can in the 30mins and start where you left off next time its bedroom day

Longtalljosie · 13/09/2018 19:43

My kitchen is bootcamped. It took ages because DD2 was off school with a temperature but got there in the end... I’m out of the house tomorrow so no bootcamped bathrooms but I’ll continue on Monday I think. The kids bedrooms look even worse compared to the rest of the house now!

hodgeheg92 · 14/09/2018 06:20

I managed to get the surfaces and hob cleaned yesterday - my knobs come off the hob and I hadn't realised! Saw Gemma do it recently. It looks cleaner than ever now.

Not sure how much I'll get done today with a poorly baby but will try. I made my own Friday focus lists so not sure what today's is meant to be but for me today it's nursery and spare room, which may be similar to the method cos I didn't change all of them.

mrsm43s · 14/09/2018 09:50

Well it's kids bedroom day today, and as my kids are teens I don't (won't) take responsibility for sorting their drawers or decluttering etc - my involvement in their rooms is limited to making sure they tidy them and doing the once a week clean and hoover which was done on Tuesday. So today, I cleaned my daughter's bedroom carpet, which desperately needed doing.

Have also done the once over of the bathrooms, beds are made. No washing needed today as I did several loads yesterday as the sun was shining. So I just need to whip around downstairs with the hoover, and then I'm done for the day! I don't even need to cook dinner as DS is making chilli con carne in food tech today (using a full 500g mince,so enough for the whole family!)

And all before 10am. I'm definitely finding this plan is helping me get on to things rather than putting them off!

SummersB · 14/09/2018 10:23

JessicaPeach thank you for clearing that up for me. Never heard of Mrs Hinch but mixing chemicals is just daft!
Got about half the master bedroom done yesterday, plus another skip/charity shop run so am quite pleased. Worked last night, first of four shifts so I don’t think I will get much done but I’m hoping to do just little bits in the bedroom again in the afternoons and perhaps finish it off by the end of this stint of night shifts.
Happy cleaning everyone!

mrsoutnumbered · 14/09/2018 10:37

I don't think I need to do Friday focus today - we're still clutter free as we only moved a few months ago, and I tend to do under beds and stuff when I do the weekly clean on a Tuesday.

I do love TOMM. To me it is the right amount of cleaning. Not going bonkers and disinfecting things that really don't need to be disinfected, not going over the top with chemicals. Just a normal level to make a family home functional.

Ollivander84 · 14/09/2018 11:16

Not much done yesterday as felt awful Sad
Managed to change the bedding

Working 8am - 10pm today so no time for anything, on the plus side I can't make the place messy!

GrimSqueaker · 14/09/2018 12:38

I've had a week off - my head's all over the place this week so I'm on a "barely functioning" footing and need to just shove my head under a duvet and ignore the world. House isn't bad anyway regardless of having laid off things for a week so it'll be OK to pick back up on Monday morning and just carry on regardless.

I need to back off the FB group though as the competitive cleaning shots are not having a good effect on the pressure I'm putting myself under on various fronts at the moment though and I'm fucking sick of hearing about sodding zoflora

Littlechocola · 14/09/2018 15:08

Level 1 and 2 jobs completed. I was on a roll and enjoying my music so emptied the pantry too. 2 black bags of rubbish in the bin!

comeagainforbigfudge · 14/09/2018 15:26

Ive totally fell of the wagon. Trying to gey back into it by bootcamping living room. Its not going well ie nowt done.

Im distracted by instagram vids and the fb group. Although i think thats what's starting to demoralise me as the before pics look pretty much identical to the after 😭

But i went to aldi and bought my fave chocolates that i will bribe myself with.

Oh and a mooch around the poundstretcher and i picked up that "pink stuff" for 80p, might as well give a whirl thinking next time i do oven. Which wont be for a while as only did it last week

Littlechocola · 14/09/2018 16:26

This is why I’m not looking at before and after pics. I know I’m doing well because I’m doing better than before! My house may not be great but it’s getting there and it’s better than before.

beela · 14/09/2018 16:50

I'm at the end of bootcamp week one. I had a long day at work yesterday so I have just done the kitchen now, and will do the bathroom while the dc are having their bath later (they are little enough to a) bathe together and b) like it when I'm in there too!). I'm also going to retidy the rooms I did earlier in the week. It's not dirt that's our problem, it's clutter Blush

I've still got 2 bedrooms, the dining room and the play room to go. But they can wait until next week.

Is it ridiculous that this is making me feel empowered?

Littlechocola · 14/09/2018 17:12

@beela definitely feeling empowered here!

GerdaLovesLili · 14/09/2018 17:18

ballseditupforever · 14/09/2018 17:58

I've joined his. Damn b slot of you. More time looking st pictures of other people's clean houses than cleaning my own.

Ollivander84 · 14/09/2018 19:16

I am acting oddly Grin
45 min break between jobs and I wanted to sit down with a brew
Instead I loaded the washing machine, did a load of handwashing bras, disinfected my stupid mouth guard that I've been meaning to do for ages, put the juicer in a cupboard instead of annoying me on the worktop, emptied the bins, put the recycling out, wiped the kitchen tops and microwave Confused

redeyes1 · 14/09/2018 19:16

Am a little worried that I've become addicted to Gemma's instagram Blush I keep checking for new stories.

On the plus side, my house is so clean and tidy, I'm loving it. I thought I was organised before, but this is a different sort of organised and clean. I feel like I am allowed to stop when I've done the jobs for the day Smile

doleritedinosaur · 14/09/2018 19:23

@beela not ridiculous, I feel the same.
It’s so much easier to clean & tidy & move on to other things.

It’s my birthday today & had a hectic week plus a busy weekend so I focused on getting downstairs bits clean & tidy.
Downstairs cleaning cupboard is organised with caddies now & found extra products so glad I’ve done it now.

It’s been such a non stressful week as the house has stayed relatively clean & tidy.
All the level 1 stuff has been done today & things are going away or getting done there & then.

Haven’t done much of the organised Christmas yet but we already have wrapping paper from january sales & cards.
All the school dates are in the calendar as well.

I feel much more relaxed & not rushing around all the time.

Is anyone going to get Gem’s book?

Littlechocola · 14/09/2018 20:05

@doleritedinosaur happy birthday!
