The Organised Mum Method

Does anyone fancy joining me in following the organised mum method?

Back to work tomorrow after the summer off (work term time only) and need to get on top of a house work routine after struggling this last year or so to stay on top of things.

I suffer with anxiety and can easily get lost in my mood without structure and I like what I saw on the website. Will probably tweek the method as I go but it's a good structured plan to kick things off.

I work odd hours around the kids being at school but have a clear hour each day to dedicate to this. Plus I am sick of losing my weekends to playing catch up when I could be doing nicer things with the kids!!

Four of us in a 4 bed semi which is clean, just full of stuff that comes with having kids. It can get pretty messy!

Have done the odd bit of decluttering over the summer which has made a bit of a difference!

Looking forward to having a house that doesn't embarrass me on the odd occasion a guest arrives unannounced Blush

Well done everyone, so much impressive bootcamping. I feel like anything that gets done is progress!

Today all Level 1 jobs done. I do hall, stairs, landing and utility room on Wednesdays so have done everything there except mopping, which I about to start. Feeling good that it hasn't taken me til 5pm to get round to it all like usual!

I do need to sort the washing and put away once it's dry but that won't take too long hopefully.

BookishOwl · 12/09/2018 10:33

Mopping done and I'm enjoying a cup of tea.

For me personally, one of the best things about TOMM is it gives me permission to stop here as I've done what I need to today. Okays there are other things I could do but they'll get done in time so I don't need to feel guilty about stopping now

hodgeheg92 · 12/09/2018 12:40

Done the hallway and level 1jobs apart from putting the washing away. Also took the baby clothes to the charity bin, just a bit later than you summers!

Think I'm going to do the bathroom after lunch, I'm not doing very well at one thing in there a day and whilst I have some time I'll add it to Wednesday.

SummersB · 12/09/2018 13:47

BookishOwl I know exactly what you mean with having the permission to stop, rather than having a guilty conscience for not doing enough!
Still cracking on with the master bedroom but got sidetracked by the oven. Well pleased with the result!! Will post before and after pics, even though it shows just how disgusting I let it become Blush

Wow, oven looks amazing Summers

Gammeldragz · 12/09/2018 15:12

Beela same here, I'm no where near done with bootcamp but every little I do feels good and I know it will get there.
Food shop today took up the morning, after lunch I did another section of the living room. Including moving heavy sofa and cleaning/mopping under it. Cleared computer area.
Just one corner and the dresser left to do now and I'll have a whole completed room!
Have also done a load of laundry. Looking forward to being able to do the actual method!

Longtalljosie · 12/09/2018 16:50

Hall done today - which is great as our hall was getting really messy as I concentrated on the other rooms. Now it’s just the kitchen which is awful! I know just what @beela means about feeling zen though - I did Flyladt before and unless you stick with it the place only improves slowly. I need results now!

raisedbyguineapigs · 12/09/2018 16:50

I caved because I couldn't even get to grips with the house after the Summer, so I got my cleaner friend to do a deep clean. I did the phase 1 tasks this morning and my aim is to use tomm to keep on top of it.

Littlechocola · 12/09/2018 17:10

raisedbyguineapigs That’s what I need although they’d have to get through all of the crap first Grin
I’ve done nothing today at home as everyone was asleep when I left at 6. I will do level one jobs when I get in at 8 but nothing else zzzz

ponygirlcurtis · 12/09/2018 17:16

Looks great SummersB - that is on my list of jobs to do. And mine is worse than yours Blush

I am being thwarted in my Level 2 jobs by the fact that I am mid-new bathroom installation and after the house being sparkling on Sunday it is now covered in stoor and dust and I have boxes of bathroom kit everywhere. So back to square one at the weekend.

But I did do living room day on Monday and shined places I had never thought to shine. Check my shiny handles!

Gammeldragz · 12/09/2018 17:18

Finished the other corner after school run, so living room is done. Although now the stairs have a pile of crap waiting to be rehomed. But still, I have a finished room! I even vacuumed and mopped the downstairs hallway and vacuumed the stairs. Knackered now though and I still have to cook dinner, finish homework, bath kids... It never ends!
DH is currently butchering sheep on my dining table though so dinner is delayed!

hodgeheg92 · 12/09/2018 17:20

pony girl Very shiny handles! And look at that oven Summers! I was thwarted by a whiney baby this afternoon so my dreams of cleaning the bathroom were dashed. Oh well, watched some rubbish tele and played with her instead.

californiascreaming · 12/09/2018 17:34

Summers - great oven. Its my kitchen task for tomorrow - keep putting it off! Must remember to wear old clothes tomorrow as I always seem to splash it somewhere and ruin something...
And yes yes to previous poster - I'm sure this is kind of how my mum kept organised at home - must ask her next time we go see her, and we definitely had a forerunner of meal planning - you could tell the day of the week by what meal it was!

doleritedinosaur · 12/09/2018 20:09

Ahhhh those handles are so shiny.

I’ve been trying to find the pink stuff so I can attack my oven again & I can’t find it anywhere local.

Only managed level 1 stuff so far today as had a scan for baby & spent most of the day out but following the other days means it’s not the absolute mess it could be.
Even OH did some cleaning & tidying last night as having clean & tidy rooms meant he could get on with other things.

Going to get stuck into the kitchen tomorrow & finish bedrooms.

Chimichangaz · 12/09/2018 21:40

I'm a bugger for constantly starting a different routine and not following through but this thread has motivated me to really try hard with TOMM! I've adapted it a lot, there's only me and 17yo ds so I don't clean bathrooms daily (every other day) and also don't hoover daily. I've changed the days I do things too, a Thursday is a heavy day for me at work so I do Hall that day instead of (is it kitchen?). I've typed it all out on a spreadsheet as I'm a bit of a geek and I also like crossing things off lists...I've added other daily stuff too such as getting clothes and lunches ready, doing admin and finances, ironing etc. I was home from work a lot earlier today and I've spent 2 hours cleaning which covers me for yesterday when I did none Confused

I went to bed at 9 and have just felt so zen. I even ignored the stairs which need hoovering as I know I'll do them tomorrow Grin

Can't wait for a weekend not spent cleaning my house from top to bottom!

welshmist · 12/09/2018 22:56

Finished the bedroom today, all cupboards, wardrobes and drawers sorted. Some stuff for the bin, some for charity. Lots of empty hangars now. Tomorrow will make a start on the kitchen cupboards, under the sink is overflowing with bottles, so will take my time with that one. Then move onto drawers and cupboards.

quackingduck222 · 13/09/2018 08:20

3 days in and I can’t believe how clean my house is.

I’ve changed the days around a bit so bathrooms were yesterday but it took 30 mins each in the en suit and bathroom but that’s ok as I’m starting to see the more I’m on top of it the easier it will be.

Can’t wait for kitchen day today. I know it will take longer than 30 mins as I want to give everything a good scrub down but that’s alright as by Friday the whole house will be gleaming.

Steala · 13/09/2018 08:55

Me too! I'm looking round my bedroom, hall and even living room and thinking there's not an awful lot to do. Bathrooms, kitchen and especially kids' rooms are another matter entirely.

hodgeheg92 · 13/09/2018 09:03

Feeling a bit defeatist today. Hallway was lovely and sparkly when I first left the house yesterday morning but by the evening time it was a dumping ground again. Was up in the night lots with the baby and just had to listen to her screaming while I rocked her to sleep for half an hour, currently stuck underneath her now she's finally asleep.

I've seen the pink stuff in Robert Dyas and Dunelm if you have either of those dolerite

Neenook · 13/09/2018 09:08

I've done the bedrooms and am on bathrooms today. Aiming for two loads of washing too. Having to adapt slightly due to shifts but I think once I'm on top of everything I should manage at least level 1 jobs daily. Then can catch up on the rest on days off...

SummersB · 13/09/2018 10:19

ponygirlcurtis loving the shiny shiny handles! (love the username by the way)
hoge and all the others who have small DCs, I take my hat off to you for getting anything at all done. My youngest DS is 9 and the others are teens, and I still struggled and mostly failed to stay on top if things during the summer hols. You deserve a medal!
I will carry on with the master bedroom today and do another run to the dump/charity shop. Also need to do shopping etc so I don’t think I will finish the bedroom today. But I’ll try!
On a side note, is anyone else a member of the TOMM Facebook group and knows what the problems are that Gem has been having? I am getting the impression there has been some online criticism/bullying towards her but I can’t for the life of me imagine what people’s problems with the method might be? Surely you either like it or you don’t, in which case you just don’t follow it? But I might have gotten the wrong end of the stick there.

JessicaPeach · 13/09/2018 11:33

30 mins done in the kitchen for me today! I was tempted to do a bit longer but it will all be done in the end. I was a bit naughty and didn’t do level one first so about a third or so of the time was taken up doing what I should have already done really.

Bought myself a new sonos yesterday under the guise of being able to have the playlist easily accessible in every room. A weak excuse but I’ve got it now mwah ha ha ha

JessicaPeach · 13/09/2018 11:35

The problems Gemma has been having are because she’s getting some backlash from the ‘hinch army’ after she said people shouldn’t be mixing chemicals (something Mrs hinch is a big fan of) This has morphed into ‘shes jealous of Mrs hinch’ blah blah. I don’t think they are in competition (in my eyes) at all. I like Mrs hinch but she just cleans the same clean things over and over again, Gemma is helping me get stuck in and tidy up properly so I can start cleaning things that are already clean too 😂
