Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

This is the thread for me! (Sorry haven’t read it all yet). We are moving abroad early next year and I have 3 months to clear out everything (including furniture) in our 4-story house! We are not shipping anything just going to take a couple of cases so I have to be super ruthless. Thank you for inspiring me to get on with it.

ZeppelinBend · 25/10/2017 23:05

Oh my goodness Enter, that would be so hard to whittle down to what you want to keep.

Productive day. I cleared out a cabinet in the dining room and has now been moved to the upstairs hall - nearly put my back out manhandling it up the stairs. Thinking of possibly using it for for bedlinen. A bag of books is ready to leave to the little lending library at our train station. Chucked the liquidiser part of my mixer that has been sitting broken in a cupboard. Had originally thought about fixing it but since bought a nutribullet and forgot it was there. Sorted out tupperware.

Tomorrow I want to get through the dvds. Know dvds are a bit old fashioned now but I would hate to get rid of my favourites. Dc's I dare say there's a fair few I can bin because they've scratched them (the horror, I'm so particular about my own) or grown out of them.

megletthesecond · 25/10/2017 23:09

Marking my place. I cannot go into Xmas season without a brutal clear out.

I am back on the wagon.
I had the house to myself yesterday evening and went through a bookshelf and weeded out some books that I really had been hanging onto for sentimental reasons. I have another group of books I have to look through and decide on. The shelf looks good! I plucked out a toy from the cupboard (in its packaging!) that's surplus to requirements. Some of the other remaining toys and craft stuff might go on freecycle. I hadn't thought of that so thanks ArcheryAnnie!

So a carrier bag is ready to be dropped off in town.

Did a little of the sheaves of paper: easy out of date info and I no longer keep all the bills beyond the last quarter. My current paper is mostly under control but the backlog is menacing..

Medwaymumoffour · 26/10/2017 17:29

enter that sounds like a hard challenge, I would need a lifetime to do that, not three months! But it would be so freeing too. Good luck!

Right went through the shoes today and only 26things to go and I have hit my 300 target to smash the original 200 I wanted to get rid of this month. I can do it right? There’s still a few days left!

StealthNinjaMum · 26/10/2017 17:39

Have had a bad few days. Since Friday I have only got rid of one top and I've been too busy to do anything else with dc on half-term. Dh is out tonight and I am hoping to do more filing and paperwork tonight if I can get the dc to bed early.

medway that is fantastic, of course you can do it.

Last week I sorted through dress up costumes and have several witch outfits I can see on local Facebook site. Will try to do it tonight.

Enterthedragons · 26/10/2017 22:56

Good work medway, you’ve got this!

Took photos out of 20ish frames today and listed them for sale. Sold 2 tennis rackets and balls plus a bedside table (buyer picking it up tonight). That’ll do me for today!

Medwaymumoffour · 27/10/2017 00:19

21 things to go now. Four days left! I’m going to sort youngest sons pjs and underwear out as there has to be easy wins there. Also his T shirts as he’s got a few hand me downs so about 40 thshirts im sure. That’s my goal tomorrow, as soon as I get up I’m going to find those 21 things and go to the charity shop and dump straight after. Then it’s just two bags in the boot for my friend and nursery.
Not sure what target for next month? Another 300 might be too high but I shouldn’t stop either.
I’m counting the Christmas items in then getting rid of that number of items in Jan. I want to be clutter free by this time next year ( no small task with four young kids!)
Keep going everyone!

Sparrowlegs248 · 27/10/2017 00:40

I'm struggling get a bit with a poorly toddler and baby but I did take a couple of broken (fixable) book to be glued back together to grandads (ds faves ) and also a bag of books that I've not read nor ever likely to, to give to a family member who's laid up after an operation .

I'm starting slow atm and hope to speed things up once pre school starts and I get a bit more time.

I am though doing a bit more as I go alonget, just little bits back in their places so it does feel better

Was your target 300 for the month medway? If so bloody well done!

Sparrowlegs248 · 27/10/2017 00:41

Great idea re counting Xmas items in too.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 27/10/2017 10:29

Dumped a load of things at the charity shop today (had been in the car boot for a while). Also gave away our slow cooker to a friend as we don’t use it enough

Sparrowlegs248 · 27/10/2017 10:59

Taking the broken toaster to the tip.

Medwaymumoffour · 27/10/2017 14:38

Yippe! Massive bag of pjs and underwear ready to go. Amazingly I also had baby clothes in these draws, 2-3 pants for my five year old! No wonder I couldn’t close his draws. I looked again for 4-5 clothes and despite doing it last months I still found some bits. They must have been in the wash so it just goes to show I am not clearing draws as the sizes need changing properly.
I’m so happy! I will count up and report back later. Doing the sorting first thing helped to.

boredofmyoldname · 27/10/2017 14:50

How have I not found this thread before?!

I'm in, love a good de-clutter in the run up to Xmas. Also need to get this house back in order as I'm sick of "things" being everywhere.

I made a start this morning by emptying my small porch aka shit corner... Have dumped a little tikes rocker that we've had for 10 years, a Christmas tree, 2 broken plastic boxes, some muslin squares and a broken dolls pram! Now to sort through the boxes of DVDs/CDs and stepper/weights that I've found!

StealthNinjaMum · 27/10/2017 16:21

I have sorted through some children's books and got two bags ready to go to the charity shop.

I also binned a pizza express voucher that expired in 2014. It was sitting in a pot (one of many) in which things like vouchers and loyalty cards are thrown into. I am slowly getting rid of these things and putting the useful ones in one place but they really do seem to get all over the house. I'm sure dh just empties his wallet onto a window ledge and never returns to the pile of crap.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 27/10/2017 16:40

Yes.. my DH does the same. Empties pockets or bag and leaves a pile of clutter until they are everywhere. Drives me potty!

StealthNinjaMum · 27/10/2017 18:02

The pot it was sitting in was papier mache one made by a child. I can't remember which child made it (obviously at school or an activity not with me) and how old they were so I'm wondering if that means I am allowed to bin it!

Medwaymumoffour · 27/10/2017 19:54

ninja make a mental note of the pot, think of it as in the maybe list to go next month. Then next month it will be on your mind when you think of things to get rid of. This works for me, tricky things I procrastinate over I mentally shelve as it’s so easy to get stuck on a item. Next month you will have had time to think.

347 things out so far this month! Whoop whoop! I’m so happy! Will keep going over the weekend and November’s target is 150. Once I’ve said it that’s it. Must hit my target next month then Dec I’m going to do one thing a day, count in the Christmas presents item number and that number is January target. By Feb I hope to see or feel a difference in my clutter levels.
Dh has painted the house, it’s all coming together but there’s a long, long way to go still

Sparrowlegs248 · 27/10/2017 21:30

Well I went out and forgot to put the toaster in the car. Came back to find a neighbour had left a bag of books for dc, they are nice books and dc1 loves books but bloody he'll now I've got to find a home for them!

I'm impressed at 347!!

megletthesecond · 28/10/2017 14:59

I've pulled my suitcase of cd's out of the cupboard and I've binned a handful of shockers. If I was organised I'd be burning the good ones to my laptop now will do it after the news headlines have finished.

boredofmyoldname · 28/10/2017 15:05

Went into the kitchen this morning with the idea that there was nothing in there to get rid of... A full bin bag later it's (mostly) clutter free!

Also managed to get 2 bags of clothing out from under the stairs to head to charity shop and a bag of jackets for the community jacket donation rail!

Farontothemaddingcrowd · 28/10/2017 15:49

I need this thread. I took some old carpet and rugs to the tip last week and I have two big bags of old broken toys etc to get rid of this week.

GoGoGazelle · 28/10/2017 20:18

2 bags to the charity shop and one christmas jumper bought. I need to keep note of ins and outs this month - DD's birthday so sure to accumulate lots.

StealthNinjaMum · 29/10/2017 14:17

Thanks medway for me decluttering is just like chipping away at something. So one day I chip away at the kitchen, then I might chip away at something else and then return to the kitchen three weeks later. Each time I throw something away that I perhaps wouldn't have done the previous time. I am intending to throw the paper mache thing away when I am sure that dds won't find it in the bin.

Feeling a bit depressed as despite my best efforts the house is a mess after a week with dds off school and I have done next to nothing.I have thrown away about 3 items of clothing with holes but tomorrow I'll rescue them from the bin to put in a charity shop 'rags' bag. Weirdly I am definitely suffering withdrawal symptoms from the lack of decluttering. I had got into a nice routine of doing something every day. I will miss the girls when they're at school tomorrow but can't wait to get back to filing the paperwork.
