Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

Ahh I have found my people. I’ve made loads of progress with books and CDs and we had a paperwork fire last year. Although now I have another pile to deal with. My DH is the worst hinderance as he leaves little piles of clutter behind him wherever he goes 😫 anyone know how to deal with this? Receipts, keys, coins, work paperwork ... then he’ll make another pile somewhere else! He’s also in charge of the kitchen which has no system and he keeps buying gadgets (juicer, pasta machine, vacuum bagger..). We also have a pile of various random crap under the kitchen table that I need to deal with.

Medwaymumoffour · 19/10/2017 20:44

My husband is as bad as me for clutter so I feel your pain. Maybe suggest as your haveing a declutter he might like to join you in the challenge?

Bad day here. Me and friend swopped equal quantities of clothes so I fear that was decluttering neutral.

I went late night Christmas shopping which in theroy was ok as I’m clearing out partly to deal with the Christmas influx - but primark pulled me in with their Aladdin’s cave of tat / wonder and I fear not everything was needed or a present

I’m beyound curing. I’m doomed! But I have some nice presents I guess

TheGrumpySquirrel · 19/10/2017 20:54

My DH is good at big clear outs.. terrible at the everyday basic not leaving his crap everywhere !

GoGoGazelle · 19/10/2017 21:05

I've handed more kids clothes on but then bought more for me. Going to have a wardrobe cull tomorrow and charity shop things that make me feel fugly.

StealthNinjaMum · 20/10/2017 08:45

peppa hope your creation of a box of doom went well. I still have lots of piles of papers but no boxes of doom.

Yesterday I went through our Halloween decorations box and sorted out costumes to sell or take to a charity shop. youngest dd is currently squeezing into a toddler outfit - she is 6. She will not be happy if I get rid of the outfits.

medway I just put dh's stuff in a box. He is more of a hoarder than me and I am hoping to set a good example that he will want to follow! We're slightly lucky in that he has a study so I have started to put his post and things in a carrier bag and hung it on the door handle of the study. Once it's in there he can do what he like with it. I do sometimes shred his post but only when it's stuff that is obvious sales so he gets catalogues sent to him from screw fix, shirts companies, BT / Sky. He doesn't know I shred these things and would probably be annoyed if he did.

Yesterday I didn't do much (other than sort through Halloween stuff) just shredded a few papers.

Today I am going through another drawer in the bedroom.

CandyMelts · 20/10/2017 14:42

Fridge and freezer done today, doesn't feel like proper decluttering but it's good to do. I feel a domestic goddess with a clean fridge Smile

ArcheryAnnie · 20/10/2017 15:01

I have piles of random crap to do, but made myself feel a bit better by weeding out half a dozen books from the bookshelves, and half a dozen DVDs.

One side result of this current attempt at decluttering is that I am putting things where they are supposed to be, so eg, next time I need a picture hanger/allen key/torch/whatever, I can go to the giant box of picture-hangers/allen keys/torches/whatever, and not buy a new picture hangar/allen key/torch/whatever.

Medwaymumoffour · 21/10/2017 13:50

Oh dear six things only out in the last two days. Dh has however thrown out four bin bags from the boys room as he’s painting. No idea what was in there, possibly for the best that way.

Mil is staying tonight and we’re still running around like headless chickens trying to tidy. How nice would it be not to have to do this for every visitor? I’m hiding crap everywhere! Then it’s all in the wrong place to be sorted.

Sigh still I’m getting close to my 300 target which is a great start!

squiggletea · 21/10/2017 17:02

Medway, that is why it’s taken me so long. At least visitors focus the mind!

Half term now so a chance to get ahead again. Although, washing aside, it’s not looking as bad here.

Even though it’s term time we have finished renovating some furniture. We experimented with moving other furniture which looks great in its new home. 2 new pieces of furniture now not needed!!

Also got rid of 2 bookshelves and a small table along with some of the contents.

StealthNinjaMum · 21/10/2017 18:07

A bad couple of days. Yesterday I was going to go through my tights drawer as it has lots of light brown / tan tights that I never wear. In the end I couldn't throw them out as I convinced myself I might wear them haven't in the last five years All I threw out was one single holdup stocking that I wore when I was expecting dd1 10 years ago! I also shredded some papers.

BasinHaircut · 21/10/2017 20:21

Finally got rid of DH’s old video games today. Had tried to take them to the local video exchange a couple of times previously but it’s closed down I think as it’s never been open when we’ve tried to go.

Took them into the shopping centre today instead and he got a £27 credit note for a new game so he is quite pleased with that.

And I’m quite pleased the bag has finally gone!

New boiler went in today too and is quite a bit smaller than the old one which means there is some additional cupboard space which I’ve used to store laundry stuff instead of it being on show all the time.

BakerCandlestickmaker · 23/10/2017 09:05

We have been away visiting family at the weekend and had visitors over so we have been sorting through clothes but nothing has left the house!

Like someone said upthread though, I am sorting stuff and getting it put away quicker as a side effect of my new motivation.

I am swapping over my youngest's clothes right now Medway, so I know the drawers and closet are about to be refilled! As the clothes get bigger the storage needs to as well.

My kids are beyond the toy stage and (apart from the stuffed toys..) we have a half cupboard to empty out which will be an easy win. We have said we will take them to the charity shop or dump next weekend. I suspect that half will be "too good" to part with for my DH.

Paperwork is lurking in the background: I know I have stuff going back to the 90 s!

Sparrowlegs248 · 23/10/2017 11:48

I just came on here to start a thread like this. My ail is one thing a day got rid of or found a proper place for. My stbxh is a semI hoarder and it's driving me potty

ArcheryAnnie · 23/10/2017 12:29

@BakerCandlestickmaker if you are looking to get rid of kids' stuff, particularly craft stuff, which isn't as-new to sell on ebay or takie to the charity shop, I've found freecycle (or freegle) really good for getting rid. I made up a big bag of carefully-sorted craft stuff - stickers, pencils, paints, crayons, colouring books, etc - from my DS's room (with his permission) and put them as a job lot on freecycle and they went like a shot! As long as you are very clear about the condition, you get a good response, and it makes you feel a whole lot better about getting rid, when you'd feel a bit guilty about just binning useable stuff.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 23/10/2017 12:45

I had a pretty successful Sunday and got about half the kitchen done. My DH keeps buying more pans etc but I’ve made him get rid of some others. Went through a ton of papers and got rid of more old CDs (and tape cassettes!!)

Feel like we don’t have enough storage - especially for things like tools and diy equipment. So I need to look into a new shed which will take a lot of the out of the house.

Only downside of decluttering is that it reveals how much more you really need to do!

Sparrowlegs248 · 23/10/2017 14:02

My plan is one thing a day no matter how large or small. Today, a broken night light and some random carrier bags. Yesterday I did a lot of papers and magazines and put some stuff away. 2 small children make it impossible to get on! . We have 4 sheds which are literally full to the brim. You can't set foot in them . Not my stuff. And the loft is apparently unusable or else a lot could go in there.

Sparrowlegs248 · 24/10/2017 09:05

I listed some baby things on fb, cheaply. Sold 2 so that's a couple of things gone. Going to take it all to charity if not sold in a couple of weeks.

Put so easy things back in third rightful places (things that Have seems to prefrontal uttering rooms up rather than being in cupboards etc).

There's already an improvement by day 3 and I feel so much better .

I've found a 30 day declutter chart that I might try too

CandyMelts · 24/10/2017 21:29

Nottalotta I'm following Clutterbugs 30 day decluttering challenge on YouTube which gives me a good start each day.

Today was 'junk drawers so I've done the sideboard. Few bits for the car boot pile, 43 champagne corks Halloween Blush I've put on FB marketplace as they seem to sell for crafts.

However I found my stash of alcohol miniatures, I used to fly weekly but would be driving so stashed them for some mythical future purpose. We never drink spirits at home, in fact I don't drink at all right now & don't think I can sell them as think there's rules about selling alcohol. Hmmm

Sparrowlegs248 · 24/10/2017 23:23

Just had a quick look, is it the woman with kermit the frog budgie? Crackers!!

I'll try and attach a pic of what I found

Medwaymumoffour · 24/10/2017 23:46

I think I will try clutter bugs next month. Again not much done here. More stuff coming in for Christmas but I’m telling myself that’s ok.

My newly cleared wardrobe has created a nice fresh dumping ground 😰 so I need to keep revisiting it. Tomorrow I’m going to do my bedroom again and aim to get rid of two bags full.

Stuff for charity is still in my boot but I did take some more outgrown bits down to the nursery as spares.

I’m starting a new charity bag and it can only be counted towards my target IF it goes into the boot as I think I’m also recounting - once when it goes into the bag and again when I put it in the boot!

Feel like a bit of a failure right now

BakerCandlestickmaker · 25/10/2017 10:11

I have had a stalled week plus I've let clutter accumulate through "flopping" in the evening.

I am thinking of it like giving up smoking: you get better at it each time you climb back on the wagon.

Sparrowlegs248 · 25/10/2017 13:09

Struggling today, two poorly kids, third night no sleep. Casting get around for something to chuck out. Although I'm delivering a couple of things I've sold so think that counts for today!

BakerCandlestickmaker · 25/10/2017 13:12

Medway you are well along the way to your target this month. Keep going.

My youngest is now showing a definite preference for some clothes over others. I've definitely overbought in the past and inherited plenty of clothes from family. The number of items is getting edited down.

ZepellinBend · 25/10/2017 13:24

Checking back in. Haven't been able to do much over the last week as ds has been recovering from a small op but most days I've chucked out at least one item of clothing.

Back to it from today. Have a birthday and half term to contend with over the next week so might not be entirely successful but I shall try. I love that smoking analogy Baker, hope it's true Smile

CandyMelts · 25/10/2017 20:43

Keep going team, everything out the house is progress.

My linen cupboard is now a thing of beauty, I keep looking at it Blush
Even hoarder husband happy as the old towels etc went to the local dog rescue.

Bathroom done too today.
