Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

Today's items:

An off cut of carpet
Bits of cardboard and polystyrene
Some plastic bag/wrap

We've had a few deliveries and have been doing up the house. Off to buy paint tomorrow Smile

I think my weekend goal is going to be the bedside tables. Drawers are used as junk drawers so it will be nice to have them decluttered and fit for purpose. What do you all keep in your bedside tables? Is there any 'must haves' that you like to fill them with?

Penelope good point. I hate cleaning brushes more than painting and have been known to throw them away rather than clean them

Today I worked really hard but once again have a house in chaos. I suppose you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs!

I have sorted through some of our millions of children's books and grouped together toddler books, Winnie the Witch, books with CDs, Octanaughts etc and started to sell them by theme. No interest yet so I have piles on our landing making a mess. I did however put a few toys/ jigsaws for sale and have some interest. Let's see if it actually leads to an emptier house...

Well done MajestyRoyal it's good to actually get rid of things. It's an interesting question about bedside tables because ours are junk drawers too and I want to see what is in those of tidy people. In theory they would contain underwear and makeup but in reality they seem to contain instruction booklets, phone boxes, wires for gadgets, old mothers day cards, books, buttons, tangled jewellery, random rubbish.

I don’t have bedside drawers. Only the one chest of drawers which has now gone so just using the floordrobe until we can get the new one delivered!
Horrid news with another child the same age as mine has died on a crossing in our town. Kind of ground everything to a halt and made me want to hold my babies close and not let them out of my sight.

How sad gibble things like that do put things into perspective.

I have had a normal weekend day - dc trashing the house I spent so long tidying yesterday. I have managed to put a few things in the rags pile - tights, dh's belt, a pair of childrens trousers. I have also put some wellies in my car - for the shoe recycling bin - and sewn a name label on a new school coat for dd2 so I can get rid of the old coat.

Someone also picked up a toy from a Facebook sale.

Tomorrow we're going to visit mil so I am going to try to tidy and shred some papers tonight just so I can do tomorrow's thing as we won't be at home much.

A little update: the 'towels cull' seems to have been a success. my daughter's floor is much better - still a proper tip but without 10 towels added in.

I did cull the plates, bowls and cutlery too; down to about 6 of each for four people. I think it's a success too but I didn't finish completely because I didn't cull the mugs and they are still all over the place.

There are lots of identical stripey mugs, but also a few non-matching. The plates and bowls were 3 identical sets, and because they were the same the kids haven't worked out what I've done! Yesterday, DD asked me, "How many of these did we buy?" Obviously confused by there being no clean plates in the cupboard but not sure why. She's messy but a real sweetie. Grin So, in summary, I'd better do the mugs today.

Plus 7 things of course.

7 things: 2 chipped mugs into the bin, 2 more to the charity shop, one large broken bead doorway hanging curtain which I thought I might fix one day, another worn out pair of plimsolls, ikea handle and school art item. All gone. Smile

And we now have only 4 mugs in operation, but more stashed away if I can't find one for my morning coffee.

It sounds like you're all doing really well! Star

In the last few days, I've sorted out my mortgage which has been weighing heavy on me for quite a while. It feels like I've cleared a LOT of mental clutter. I've got papers all over the dining room table again but it's only for filing and shredding so not a biggie really. It's such a relief to have got the paperwork done and sent! (Fingers crossed it all goes through OK.)

I've now got another bra to throw and I'm building up to sorting out my 'tea' cupboard. It's quite big, with allsorts in it.

I love your updates Penelope I imagine confused teenagers scratching their heads, not realising sneaky mum is hiding things from them.

Well done sandandsea it is a relief to do paperwork. We have another paperwork pile in the hall (fortunately not the mountain it was a year ago) and as most of it is dh's I intend to put it in a carrier bag and hang on his study door.

I have had a really productive morning updating my diary, trying to get workmen in to quote to do various jobs on our house, and generally organising the next couple of weeks before dc break up for easter (can't believe we are at easter already!)

I am currently writing a list for this week as it's when I don't do it that I end up doing the bare minimum. I absolutely need to get the dining room sorted as it has mountains of rubbish on it at the moment and I am going to carry on sorting out toys and selling bits - or giving them to charity shop when no one wants them.

First time posting but I need to say how much I love this thread and how much it's helped me.

Thanks everyone!

My house is starting to look so much better. Almost finished all the excess clothes. Going to move onto old DVDs and CDs next

Sorted out the airing cupboard the other day. Lots of towels now gone to charity shop for pet towels. Also remembered the tip of folding the duvet cover to the size of the pillowcase and put duvet + 1 pillowcase in the other one. Even a king size duvet fits. It works, and much more tidy.

Threw out an old baking tray, dead batteries, about 379178492 nail files and some old chargers and wires that I can't figure out a use for.

I tipped out one toy box. Four more things gone as it’s just a quick pass to remove crumbs ( and a errant mummfied satsuma 🤢) and a few bits back in their home. 32 things gone in two days, boot is full but not at the tip yet....

I think I’m going to get rid of 400 things this month to kick start me. It sounds a lot but I can do this.

That's 10, yes 10 bags of clothing gone. All DS's baby clothes sold on to new people for their new baby boys. My head feels so much clearer it's actually insane Grin. Made a list of more things that need to be sold. Hoping to get rid before this month ends and then April will be focused on making use of my storage and figuring out a place for every little thing in this house. Any money made from selling old junk can go towards new clothes for me.
