Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

I'm doing well this weekend. I'm having a minor bowel op on Tuesday (week off work!) so I'm in anxiety overdrive sorting and binning.

Sparrowlegs248 · 29/10/2017 20:01

Unexpectedly good day today. Bloody cat brought a mouse in and sethe it free which resulted in so easy stuff being moved about. I took the opportunity to give two items to a neighbour, binned a few, 4 coats to homeless project, and a couple of things in the car to drop off at a friends . No sign of the mouse...

ArcheryAnnie · 30/10/2017 08:13

I've finally finished a huge stack of shredding old paperwork. (Did it in front of the telly with one of those multi-blade scissors from Tiger - I do have a shredder, but it's a bit of a pain and too noisy to watch telly to!) It's freed up an entire drawer of a filing unit.

SandSnakeofDorne · 30/10/2017 08:31

Ok, half-term over I need to get back on this! Everyone is doing so well. I'm going to start on a doom cupboard today.

Good luck with the op meglet, at least it's motivating you.

Hope the mouse turns up notta

Hi everyone!

Can I join in please? I'm messy and the house is full of stuff I've intended to donate or sell or pass on to someone. I am aiming to start small and just get rid of one item a day for 10 days and then up it to 2!

How do you all keep the momentum up? Do you get on a roll with it?

StealthNinjaMum · 30/10/2017 15:29

Hello ArcheryAnnie I've just seen you on a style and beauty thread so I must confess I spent too long on mumsnet today.

I have done some shredding and filing and got rid of some old newspapers and magazines. It amounts to quite a large sack of papers but the room doesn't look any clearer! I also sold some dressup outfits on Facebook so hopefully if the buyers turn up tomorrow that'll be more stuff gone.

Good luck tomorrow meglet.

Steely I have been doing it all year and apart from now

ArcheryAnnie · 30/10/2017 15:35

StealthNinjaMum I've been doing a lot of difficult emails today so have been rewarding myself with Mumsnet posts in between! So i have also been spending too long today, but eh.

In other news, I've started up a fresh "clean rags for the Red Cross" bag after going through the sock drawer, mending ones that were mendable, and winnowing the ones that weren't.

CandyMelts · 30/10/2017 15:59

Under the bed today, not too bad as we got a new bed 3 months ago.

Dilema - do I sell/get rid of my horse riding stuff? I've not done it in years, would always love the idea of getting back into it but would mean sacrifices for the cost of lessons. The gear is pricy though so if I ever did I'd have to buy new boots etc - what it I make a new friend who wants me to go riding!? Grin saying that I had a bad sporting accident recently so helmet required pursuits are not good for me.

I need to get rid don't I...

Sparrowlegs248 · 30/10/2017 16:37

Candy I have tworked ponies and a horse, the horse is out onow loan as I also have a 2 yr old and baby........ I lost my old thoroughbred a few years ago and still have most of his stuff, and loads of kit for me in about a size 10/12......(is too small....) I'm getting round to the idea of getting rid . Gave some stuff to a neighbour and some to a friend today.

Medwaymumoffour · 30/10/2017 21:03

Everyone is doing really well, it’s helping to motivate me. My items in total so far this month is 107 but most of that was given to me by my friend for my dd. My out items are 354 so I am allowing myself to feel cautiously happy that’s real ( if unnoticeable) progress!
I got six nice kids items from a charity shop today but again feel confident I can find four books, one toy and one toddler dress to go out in there place

steely everyone finds things work differently but I love setting targets. Then hitting the targets makes me want to keep on. I am looking forward to getting rid of more things in November now

Sparrowlegs248 · 30/10/2017 21:08

The mantle piece in my bedroom is visibly less cluttered! I can see at least two items to put away properly tomorrow and onew to bin so they are easy wins already!

StealthNinjaMum · 31/10/2017 12:45

A good day in the sense I got rid of about 5 carrier bags worth of old papers (it's dustbin day) and took some books and CDs to the charity shop but I haven't done any decluttering. I might spend the day decorating the house for Halloween as dd2 loves Halloween.

Sparrowlegs248 · 31/10/2017 13:33

Did the mantle piece items first thing and just delivered a couple of things back to my mums . Small things but it all counts

TaylorTinker · 31/10/2017 14:32

Well done all you are inspiring me to chip away too.

I have put more books to the charity shop today as I was passing. Only two but I'd been keeping them because they were "special". They were large hardbacks that DH and I had given each other as Christmas gifts many years ago. They were on subjects we are interested in, yet we never really enjoyed them and now never look at them. It's a relief to have them gone at last and I have about 20 cm more bookshelf available!

Namechanged from Baker candlestick maker. My paper clutter is still on my mind: Archery Annie those scissors would be useful..

I need to do a blitz somewhere as the two books are all I've done since last posting.

SandyDenny · 31/10/2017 14:45

I've been busy and this fell of my TIO but back to trying to keep on top of stuff again.

I've done a big bag of rubbish, a smaller bag of clothes recycling and have a halg filled charity bag. Going to tackle some toy shelves now.

megletthesecond · 31/10/2017 15:13

I don't have an excuse to not blitz this now. I've just had a minor bowel op so will be convalescing (sp?) at home for at least a week. Gumtree/ shpock / Freecycle and the bin here I come.

Sparrowlegs248 · 31/10/2017 21:26

Just doneed a bit more. Really not much just ten minutes downstairs, couple of little bits thrown out and some more put away . I'm getting into the swing of this!!

Imy a tidy person by nature but unfortunately my husband is a bit of a hoarder, it used to really bug me when I'd tidy all my stuff up and clean and the place still looked a tip and I guess years of it has rubbed off and less time has resulted in me just not doing so much .

StealthNinjaMum · 01/11/2017 11:25

ArcheryAnnie TaylorTinker a friend told me her way of getting rid of paper. she said she puts much of it in water as the ink runs so it's not readable. I might try this although I am still in love with my amazing shredder. Having shredded maybe 12 inches of papers I think I have got through most of it.

Big achievement today. We have accumulated tonnes of Halloween decorations that went in two boxes. Today I took down our decorations and spent a couple of hours sorting throwing them, throwing scruffy ones away and organising them in food bags. I got them down to one box!

I am also about to put a Christmas tree up. It sounds stupid but our first Christmas presents are about to be delivered and rather than put them in my Room of Doom I thought I would wrap them and put them under the tree and it would look tidier! I still have a load of paperwork that I'd like to do in the Room of Doom so I'm not going to decorate the tree yet - but I can at least get the presents put 'away'. I have also found a big bag of Christmas cards, I buy them every year without looking at how many I have and then I never write any so I am intending to write them this year and post them on 1st December to at least get rid of that clutter and be organised for Christmas too.

Sorry for people who hate mention of Christmas this early!

ArcheryAnnie · 01/11/2017 11:53

StealthNinja I did that with our Halloween decorations about three weeks ago - whittled the amount down by a half (my DS is older now and a lot of them were aimed at younger children) and we put the rest on Freecycle, where they were snapped up my another mum planning a Halloween party! It's very satisfying to have only one massive box rather than two.

TaylorTinker · 01/11/2017 14:07

I think I chucked a couple of Halloween bits yesterday but we had gone down to just one box anyway.
I have a small bag of "clean rags" that I'll count as today's item. I was really happy to find a charity shop that took them!

I'm chucking bits of paper in the recycling right now (in dribs and drabs, from 2014!) that don't have names on or that I can just tear the corners off, the water idea might come in handy for more detailed documents!

TheGrumpySquirrel · 01/11/2017 16:09

DH has bought a fugly kitchenaid from about 1736 from the charity shop 😭 in return he has promised to declutter the cupboard above the fridge and store it and all his baking things there... we shall see!

Medwaymumoffour · 01/11/2017 16:31

October was a success thanks to this bread. 356 out and 113 in but the majority of the in things was given to me by my friend.

Did 40 minutes today and another 47 things out. So almost a quarter of my target on day one. Must keep this up as it’s making zero difference to look at

Pandoraslastchance · 01/11/2017 17:26

I dropped 2 carrier bags of dvds and 2 carrier bags full of books off at the local charity shop. Got my next load waiting by the front door (dont drive)

Also got rid of two bin bags of my clothes that I didn't wear and persuaded dh to get rid of a bin bag of his stuff as well.

I just need to find homes for things like the basket with hairbrushes and hairbands etc in it as well as my curlers etc.

SandSnakeofDorne · 01/11/2017 19:58

Finally started again and got rid of a whole bin bag full of stuff!
