Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

Yesterday's random item was a mini frying pan from aldi's aisle of joy that doesn't work on our induction hob. Today is a bag of outgrown kids clothes to pass on.

Back on it....usual blitz approach for me. Good loads of stuff at least 6 bin bags. Aim is to do the little and often once I have broken the back of it. I cleared the kitchen a few weeks back and keeping on top of it.

Still need to attack my wardrobe to day - havent been able to open the doors for months as so much other crap had migrated to our bedroom.

My husband did it with me yesterday as I am still recovering from surgery. It was v effective - I made the decisions and he just loaded the bags - or he challenged me when I was holding on to something. Also all this shite isnt all mine - it is "ours" and the result of a very big, busy family with too many other life-changing events taking our focus over the past decade. Realised that this is the first time he has been involved and done this with me. I am aware that is also an emotional issue for me. I feel v ashamed of the mess - but I didnt address it and created it.

But coming out of the dark and clutter is wonderful.

Haven't been doing much the last couple of days, bar my nail varnish box which got sorted through.

Today did under the sink cupboard and a unit, binned a few random bits. I was looking for the household candles as we have an amber (so far) weather warning approaching and wanted to make sure I had some should we have a power outage. Can't see me moving much from the house over the next couple of days, will get stuck in and blitz the kitchen then.

Yes four kids! Two with SEN and in specialist schools but only my Austict son feels like really hard work. My youngest is out at nursery Monday, and Thursday and Friday mornings so it’s no excuse.

I sold seven things on eBay, but then bought seven off FB! A bit mad with myself as I was supposed to be not buying anything. It’s the size up for my dd so tonight’s aim is get all her next size up things out and photo them to see if she has enough so I don’t over do it ( that’s a problem for me I get bargins to put away and forget I already bought tons of the same before)

Took advantage of the good weather to get some work in the garden done. Cut back a load of ivy that's getting out of hand and creeping towards the shed. Threw away a few broken pots and bits of old wood.
Had a bit of a sweep in the bathroom and chucked some half used bottles of perfume I don't really wear anymore. There's a basket of random junk in there that I need to go through so I might do that before bed.
I've got a box to go to the charity shop, so I've put it by the front door to go into the car tomorrow morning.
I've been ignoring the paperwork Mountain, focussing on the easy stuff. I will do something with it this week.

Cleared the wardrobe - donated another 4 bags this afternoon. Feels glorious. Just a little pile of clothes to sort tomorrow and my bed room will be done....this only took 2 afternoons and it has caused me distress for years.

Here I am again, still going through paperwork. I have shredded more stuff and filed stuff. It's never ending.

i thought I was very good about weeding our bookshelves - I do get rid of books that I don't think I'll read again - but I have looked around at the stacks and stacks and thought, no I can do better!

(I like having books around me, but even if I got rid of a hundred overnight, it would barely make a dent.)

fresh I know how you feel, I really need to tackle my wardrobe area again. I dump stuff in front of it which means I can’t get into it. I then hang my clothes off of the wardrobe doors. It’s insane!

stealth I bought a mini garden insinarator in b&q for £9.95 yesterday. I’m going to do a Bon fire for halloween / fireworks night. Got some wood so will roast marshmallows and do sparklers with the kids then dump my filling into it afterwards!

freshprincess Sounds like you've been busy. . I have been ignoring my paperwork for years and have done maybe a tiny fraction but I feel so good. Today, as I filed, I was comparing gas and electricity bills as a new years project will be to switch suppliers. Even if you just do fifteen minutes a day it will be really satisfying.

Decluttered both my freezers today. I seem to have gone through a phase in March and April this year of buying packs of English muffins when I eat about one a month.

Stealth - motivational pep talk kick up the bum definitely appreciated.
So last night I grabbed a huge armful of paperwork whilst waiting for dinner to cook and managed to weed out a carrier bag full of stuff.
On the plus side I found the sheet of park run barcodes I laminated at work and lost weeks ago and a cheque I need to pay into the bank.
It's still a tip but I feel better that I spent 15 minutes productively.
LAGatta - you made me laugh. My freezer broke a few months ago so I had to chuck it all away. I had 2 packets of English muffins as well. Can't remember the last time I had or wanted one.

medway that's really good value, I hope your paperwork burning is more successful than mine.

Today I am going to take three bags to the charity shop that I put in the car about a week ago, do another hour's paperwork declutter and I might tackle some bedroom drawers. I started them earlier in the year but as with most things I never finish! I will do a bit more today.

I take a note on my iPad of all the stuff I throw away and today it's 3 big recycling bags of paper that I have decluttered in the last week ready for the bin men.

I'm so silly. Went to local town just to drop bags to charity shop, paid for parking and discovered boot was empty. I must've dropped them off last week.

Back at home I emptied a Box of Doom. Haven't filed everything, there are piles of papers everywhere but I'm getting there. Will tidy my bedroom when dc are in bed.

I’m flagging now. I have tidied my dds room. It’s tiny. Smaller than a bathroom but only a few things out. Still trying to cram everything away in her room is near impossible so it needs another pass another day

I haven’t got rid of anything yet this week except a small stack of recent paperwork from the kitchen. Schools stuff mainly. Not sure why they have to send home so much paper, Its like a second job keeping on top of it all.

I have a couple of hours tomorrow afternoon but need to go shopping and get a card and gift for a party for DS on Saturday so not sure I’ll get time for decluttering too.

Me please!

I've just moved house. I got rid of loads before I moved, and am now sorting and chucking / beating/ taking bits to charity as I unpack. It's such a liberating feeling to see and feel the difference. I'm hoping that having a lot less is going to make housework a lot quicker and easier too.

Keep up Medway how many more things do you have to chuck out? I find I rarely finish a room but each time I tackle it I get a bit more ruthless. I have a natural resistance to getting rid of things but as I get of some stuff it seems to be getting easier as I realise I don't miss the stuff I have already got rid of. We have to change habits. As you know I have 20 years (at least of paperwork). I started out by shredding lots of Orange phone bills from the 90s - and it felt odd to shred a bill - but yesterday found myself shredding the phone bill from last month!

Having said that I am struggling to do too much at the moment. I am just unusually busy catching up with friends and viewing secondary schools for dd1. I was too tired to go through my bedroom last night so will try again tonight when dc are in bed.

I have got rid of 222 things so 78 to go.

I have a few more bits to recount for my friend which is my sons entire 4-5 wardrobe so let’s hope it’s 78 things!

I’m filling too while I gather up my will to live. Found 2014 paperwork on my pin board and a May Jojo catalogue in the kitchen. Oh the shame!

Report
StealthNinjaMum · 18/10/2017 20:11

Ha ha, just 2014! May 2017? I aspire to only have 2014 things lying around.

I keep finding the most ridiculously old stuff just lying around. I emptied a drawer in my bedroom today and found more paperwork and loads of rubbish. I filed and shredded the paperwork and thew away lots of junk - buttons and small stuff so probably not even a carrier bag full - but I do feel better now it's done. I also found a tiny tooth. I have no idea whose it was. Should I chuck it away? I can't, it belonged to one of my babies

Welcome bitoutofpractice and cmh123

30 items of clothing in a box for my friend today. Mind you she’s giving me clothes too so I’d better keep on sorting and clearing

Haven’t got rid of anything today but I have managed to fix the curtains that have been hanging down since about Easter.

Had some everyday bits and bobs to get done today so no time for deculttering. Am going to try and tackle a kitchen cupboard later though so I feel like I’ve done something today.

Welcome new declutterers, sounds like there's some good progress being made. Paperwork is the worst...

Bit slow here as I'm not well and had some rough days and life admin took priority.

Now done days 3 and 4 of clutterbugs October challenge - dishes & bakeware (only had 1 tin to get rid of which DH begged me to keep even though he bought it for yorkshire puds but now claims it doesn't work and has a better one. His reasoning: "it's the perfect size for tartets" ffs, we've never made a tartlet in 10 years together. ) and utensils done today.

Report
Peppaismysaviour · 19/10/2017 19:21

Now the possible future need for a home baked tartlet is an excellent reason to keep a pan! Haha he is one of us

Welcome to new hopeful declutterers. I haven't been on for a few days and walked past a charity shop without taking a bag of stuff in so I am clearly slacking. You have all remotivated me (my phone was insisting I meant demotivated, it seems to know me) so after bed time I plan on going round entire house for paperwork and getting it all in to one massive box so I can start on box of doom!
