Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

I love this thread, I’ve been slowly reading it over the last week and it’s been encouraging me to clear the house out. You’ve all been doing so well, I’m very impressed.

I have dropped a car load of clothes off at the clothes bin, two bags to the charity shop and I’ve been sorting through my cupboards.

Trying to be ruthless but I find it hard to give away books etc that I’ve been given as gifts. I’m also hampered by my DH who is a bit of a horder.
When we moved house we had two lorries, one for the house and one for his garage/shed. Had to clear out a box of random free gifts from the petrol station while he was out or he would refuse to let me get rid!

Betsy86 · 03/01/2018 20:51

Had a little declutter in kitchen felt mildly energetic after work and school so declutterd a bag of stuff out of the cupboards.
Trying to find the energy to do some bits upstairs and watch tv at same time but now i have led down and found some choc its not looking promising lol.

Gibble1 · 03/01/2018 21:06

DH took down all the Christmas decorations today so this evening we put them back in the loft. Then had to spend a good long while decluttering a ver tiny very angry cat from the loft. Poor DH nearly fell out of the loft and she has left bruises all over him from biting and scratching him. The dogs then broke through the stair gate and came up to check out the noise. That made her even more mad.
She has now taken to DD’s bed in a massive strop. Bloody fluffball!

BendoverK · 03/01/2018 22:08

I have decluttered my paperwork. Got rid of old outdated stuff as I filed the most recent paperwork. Got rid of a large carrier bagful.

PenelopeFlintstone · 04/01/2018 02:06

Could you get a special mug printed with an embarrassing baby picture of your daughter? Maybe she wouldn't use it? Ha ha. Grin
Gibble1 - that cat!! ShockGrin
Chunkymonkey123 - welcome Smile
Betsy and BendoverK - sounds like good progress.
I've just put two more carrier bags of clothes in the car for next time I'm in town. That's me for the day! Now, I have to go to the January Cure thread and do my jobs on there.

PenelopeFlintstone · 04/01/2018 09:11

Sorry, me again. Out the door: kids Clark's boots I've had for selling for about 10 years!, a computer box which I was keeping so that when I upgrade I can sell the computer in its original box Confused. Who thinks like this? And why??

SandAndSea · 04/01/2018 10:21

Me!! Grin (I love boxes!)

Hi everyone! I'm back and building up to tackling the paperwork mountain. Also trying to sell a few bits. Sounds like you're all doing really well!

abitoflight · 04/01/2018 10:28

Shameful waste of cereal found today. I never have it so looked in cereal cupboard when putting something new away
Unopened box from use by mid 17, 2 other boxes part used and 3 bags part used granola/muesli
They are getting one cereal each from now on
But I do have an empty shelf now
My attic rooms cold but I need to go up there as having bedroom done (inc plastering) later in month so will need to relocate all wardrobe contents. I will have to sort out upstairs storage wardrobes so DH and I have some storage there for a couple of weeks Sad

StealthNinjaMum · 04/01/2018 11:19

SandandSea I loved BendoverK's comment I have decluttered my paperwork like it was really quick and easy to do! BendoverK I am very jealous it is going to take me weeks to do the same! There is another thread at the moment about paperwork and some had something like one box file for a family of four (I may have got that slightly wrong but it was amazing anyway).

I took the tree down yesterday and started sorting the decorations in bags according to their colour. I was so busy doing housework I didn't get rid of anything but will get rid of some paperwork today.

Betsy I tend to watch TV on the iPad so I can do housework/ declutter and move the iPad around the house as I do it. If I physically sat on the settee or chair to watch TV I would never get up!

SandAndSea · 04/01/2018 11:30

I'm so keen to avoid my paperwork that I've sorted out my cutlery drawers! For over 10 years, I've had 2 cutlery sets, one of which I don't even like. It's going! (Apart from the teaspoons which are always useful.) Also going are various duplicates (bottle openers etc), cake toppers (Santas etc), knackered knives and medicine measuring things. I've been clutter clearing for years but had somehow missed all this. Anyway, my fave cutlery has now been promoted to the top drawer where it will be properly enjoyed! (Cue: self-satisfied sigh.)

Chunkymonkey123 · 04/01/2018 14:50

who keeps boxes

We do! Are you meant to keep boxes? We always do in case they break (mainly electrical things) and you need to send them back, but do you need to send them back in the original box?! If not I can recycle them. The thought makes me very nervous though.

SandAndSea · 04/01/2018 15:12

I'm still basking in the joy of my newly arranged and sparklingly clean cutlery drawer! Grin

But, not to be distracted, I've also got rid of a load of lightbulbs (for lights we don't have) and my old eye-shadow - the new one arrived today so the old has to go!

Tidy2018 · 04/01/2018 15:40

Hello. I think I've found my tribe! I was looking for somewhere to report any daily decluttering / organising / tidying successes, and this looks like a good place.

There are so many types of clutter for me to deal with. I want to focus on just getting started and keeping going.

SandAndSea · 04/01/2018 16:13

Welcome, Tidy!

OhNoFuckADuck · 04/01/2018 16:40

Can I join in please?

I seem to have finally found the impetus to make a start...
planning to have a read through for top tips but for now I've managed to get rid of

  • two bags of ring binders that "might come in useful" and haven't in 6 years are now in the bin
  • ancient TV that definitely doesn't work is now in the boot ready to go to the tip.
  • nothing yesterday but did bleach the grotty grout around the bath so it is now gleaming - I was getting gassed so didn't manage the whole room but plan to get that finished today. Life can only feel better with a grot free bathroom!!!
Gibble1 · 04/01/2018 17:56

Back to cubs tonight so am taking an Ikea bag full of cubs stuff to be filed away in my storage at the Hall.

StealthNinjaMum · 04/01/2018 20:39

Ooh boxes. I keep them too but like chunkymonkey feel nervous about getting rid of them.

My loft is almost empty apart (the tidiest part of the house!) from cardboard boxes as I hate keeping clutter there. I am a bit obsessed with keeping every box as I am convinced I will either sell the item or return it because it's broken and every couple of months I go in there to remove boxes of items I've sold or am intending to sell. When dc leave home I'm intending to just keep lego, playmobil and some of their books so always keep lego, playmobil boxes. However someone pointed out to me that if there's a fire in my house in the loft it would spread from one end of the house to the other so I have been actively getting rid of them recently. chunkymonkey that thought convinced me we don't need so many boxes lying around.

There are still lots of boxes but i have been getting rid of boxes of old or cheap electrical items that we probably wouldn't get fixed. I'm aware the dh has a computer box and I am going to recycle that but I am obsessed with being burgled so won't leave a box like that outside on bin day so need to pull it apart and recycle in our cardboard recycling place on a sainsbury's car park.

No decluttering today but I did question dh about his multiple deodorants in the bathroom. He refuses to use a spray Lynx that I must've bought by mistake (he likes roll on). So today and for the foreseeable future I will be wearing boys deodorant until it is used up. It's weird but today I sat with the kids and just smelt like a man I quite liked it

MajesticWhine · 04/01/2018 21:39

Grin @StealthNinjaMum - I quite like wearing men's deodorant too - don't tell anyone.
I am slowly accumulating more clothes for eBay or charity shop. Even 7yr old DD contributed a onesie bless her.

DH has terrible hoarding tendencies (like I do) and he took a dressing gown out of my chucking out bag and hung it back up again saying it would be "useful". We had words about it.

Betsy86 · 04/01/2018 22:02

LOL to the deodorant but well go for it its there to be used up in the name of decluttering!!
I sat up late last night decluttering 2 large boxes of shoes i never wear sly scraper high etc considering i barely go out and normally wear flats dont know why i have so many. Had most of them for years but when looked through was alot i would defo never wear. Kept some of the newest ones and kept done summery sandals etc i intend to use this summer until they fall apart so i can get rid lol! But did fill a black bag of shoes to go which is good for me!!

Boxes, thats one thing i dont hoard not sure why but soon as the items out the box goes. I think if was a tv ot something expensive i might keep box for a month or so but after that its going. If you are taking a item back for a replacement tell them they can keep the box off the replacement if they get funny about it but i think alot of places mow know people aren’t always going to have the box.
I also did read that spiders find cardboard easy to climb and live on and well that put me right off lol!
Saying that i do have about 10 build a bear empty boxes that came with my xmas deliverys and are untouched feels a shame to throw them my dds not really intrested in turning them into bear houses i might just add them to carboot pile as they do sell quite well on ebay etc oddly enough.

How was cubs? Yay to taking dome stuff there to store x

StealthNinjaMum · 04/01/2018 23:16

majestic I had four dressing gowns, all about 20 years old, and I took great delight donating one as rags to a charity shop. It was so scruffy. Now I only have three. I've never bought any - all were gifts. I also have four pairs of slippers - all gifts as well.

Betsy I just hate throwing things away that have nothing wrong with them. I'm really annoyed dh won't use it. It's quite fancy in that it has a knob to turn on the flow of spray or not. I haven't used a spray deodorant for years so maybe women's ones do that too but it took me two minutes to work out how to spray myself!

Spiders? Yikes

Betsy86 · 04/01/2018 23:24

That does sound like a fancy spray! I would use it aswell is a waste to just chuck it away!
I know i was reading some tips on minimising spidersnot that it helped and it said to store things in plastic boxes as spiders find it hard to climb those but cardboard is easy. Grim!
I got rid of thee dressing gowns a while ago and i still have 3 how flipping ridiculous!! I kept one thick one a shorter one and a summery lightweight one!
I gad others as gifts over the years but was crazy having so many so i rag binned the oldest ones x

Tidy2018 · 05/01/2018 00:45

I've done Hardcore tidying and sorting ever since the weekend. Everything got very untidy from about the beginning of November, just and no more keeping my head above water until the end of term. Even bigger messes and piles of stuff accumulated over the holiday, and now I'm concentrating on getting everything in the room it belongs in.

One immediate pile of school-related paper needing attention asap is now on my desk. A mess of toys, comics, and sundry bits and pieces all over the table. This can be sorted tomorrow. Some outgrown clothing and shoes bagged up for donation. Understairs cupboard is straightened up. Lots of decluttering to do whenever there's a few quiet minutes.

PenelopeFlintstone · 05/01/2018 01:09

I've done a kitchen corner cupboard today: out has gone 2 slow cookers without lids, a pressure cooker, broken plastic steamer, and other bits and pieces. The cupboard shelf and base look extremely grotty but it doesn't wash off, so I'm going to get some pretty contact paper and cover them up.
I've been keeping those slow cookers in case I find lids for them. The reality is we don't really like the food they make. After reading today's MN slow cooker thread, I decided to just ditch them. I love my tidy cupboard.

StealthNinjaMum · 05/01/2018 10:52

I have been tidying decorations. Just when I think I've finished I spot another one. I am throwing away a white fake snow mat that sits under the tree as it's really scruffy. House feels really bare now, I miss my decorations.

PenelopeFlintstone · 05/01/2018 11:04

I forgot that I also culled my cutlery drawer. I hid all the extras in the back of a saucepan cupboard, for barbecues and other times when I might need a few extras. The drawer is better though.
