Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

I have whizzed round the house and I think I have collected all the decorations. I have decided that there is one (a light up reindeer) that I don't like so that's going in the charity shop pile.

I am just organising the decorations into bags to put away but already I can see the cupboard that they live in with the trees is really tidy ,and while we have a reasonable amount of decorations they, they fit really well. This is because I decluttered that cupboard and the decorations in November / December. I am really looking forward to getting them out again in 10 / 11 months time as they're so organised now!

I am struggling with a pottery reindeer dd1 painted in Center Parcs when she was about 3. She did a terrible job as most children would and I tried to paint over it. I haven't got it out for the last two Christmases and it could live in the cupboard forever not taking up much space. But should I just throw it away? She wouldn't even remember painting it. I hate the waste but if I don't throw it away and we keep it for 20 years it'll turn into a 'We can't throw that away we've had it for 20 years item!' and just as I hated throwing away my childhood teddies that my mum kept for 30 years and gave to me about a year ago when she was decluttering maybe I'm creating the same problem for dd1!

Cupoteap · 05/01/2018 18:48

I've been slacking but hoping to make up for it this weekend!
Good luck everyone!!!

HellonHeels · 05/01/2018 19:43

Bin the pottery reindeer! It's occupying space, rent free.

I've decluttered 2 sets of grotty curtains :-)

HellonHeels · 05/01/2018 19:44

Need to take Christmas stuff down tomorrow.

StealthNinjaMum · 05/01/2018 19:56

Thanks hellonheels it is in a bin bag.

Chunkymonkey123 · 05/01/2018 20:02

Good decision on the reindeer!
I read a tip from someone that they took a picture of the painting/craft their child had created with them holding it then you can bin it guilt free but still have evidence of it if you want to reminisce.

MajesticWhine · 05/01/2018 20:23

Fantastic idea @Chunkymonkey123

Gibble1 · 05/01/2018 22:45

Not so much gone today. A carrier bag with 3 pairs of shoes, a pair of trousers and a shirt and a wetsuit.
Also took my bf her Christmas cards that were piled up at mine and her beauty and the beast slippers that I bought her.

PenelopeFlintstone · 05/01/2018 23:12

Photographing their stuff is a great idea. If it's pictures/paintings and you wish you still had them later on not likely lol then you can print them and frame them. Just like you never shredded them! Grin
Gibble1 - that's heaps of stuff.
I've been out the front doing the verandah but it's getting too hot and it's only 10am! It's set to be 41 degrees today (in Fahrenheit = Bloody hot Grin).
I'll give it another couple of quick bursts and then I'm going to stay inside and do the floors for the other thread I'm on (January Cure). I'm not trying to promote it; I just keep mentally merging the two!

PenelopeFlintstone · 05/01/2018 23:14

This is from Fb.

Gibble1 · 06/01/2018 11:33

Haven’t heard of the January cure thread. Might go and lurk.
My dining room table is buried under piles of tat again.
I sorted out my towels 2-3 years ago and we have blue towels for us and navy blue older for when the kids go and do water activities. So why oh why do the flipping towels that I have kept separating to get rid of keep appearing on my sodding table? They are going to the ragging place. Grr!

CarysMa · 06/01/2018 11:39

This thread has inspired me to clear out the clutter. My kitchen and sitting room aren't cluttered but our bedrooms are all just bursting at the seems.

Great idea to photograph the artwork you feel bad about chucking!
I used to be so afraid of throwing out something I'd later need, but if that happens, if I regret ONE thing, I'll still have all the cupboard space I didn't have before and I can order a towel or a pair of jeans from next to arrive the next morning, if necessary, so I shouldn't fear throwing out three bags of old stuff that might contain ONE thing I regret throwing out.

PenelopeFlintstone · 06/01/2018 11:43

Haven’t heard of the January cure thread. Might go and lurk. Jump in, Gibble. I started the thread and it's only Day 4, and very quick to catch up at this stage.

StealthNinjaMum · 06/01/2018 12:32

What does the January cure thread involve? I'm tempted to join but maybe it will just stop me from clearing up the paperwork. I probably should focus on actually finishing that job even if the house is less tidy.

Up til about 2 last night tidying. Came downstairs this morning feeling really pleased with myself. I threw away lots of papers and bits that had been sitting around and put children's CDs in boxes. Some of those need to go to a charity shop but I put them in a drawer last night as the spare room charity shop pile is so big it upsets me! I also sorted out candles and tea light holders. My dining room drawers are so much less cluttered now I can see things I like and don't use (like candles) so I should be able to use them now. (If I don't they'll go to the charity shop!)

Chunkymonkey123 · 06/01/2018 19:29

I was doing so well but then DH has had a major hoarding induced freak out when he saw that I was trying to get rid of some horrible cheap wine glasses that have been in the utility room for 8 years. The fact that we have more than enough lovely wine glasses is not the point apparently as they may come in useful at some point in the future. I can’t argue with him when he’s like this as his arguments make no sense but then he does have genuine anxiety problems.
Apparently he is on board ‘reorganising’ but not decluttering which is annoying as I had a load of things I wanted to get rid of but will have to stick to things he won’t notice for a couple of months 😡

HellonHeels · 06/01/2018 20:10

Emergency solution chunky - break the glasses in a freak episode of clumsiness.

HellonHeels · 06/01/2018 20:13

I've decluttered the Christmas cards into recycling, set aside 2 christmas decs for the chazza, managed to pack the rest up more neatly so I can bin two empty boxes. Final declutter of the day: DBoyfriend made snowballs with last of the Christmas advocaat and cocktail cherries Xmas Smile

MajesticWhine · 06/01/2018 20:30

@Chunkymonkey123 I feel your pain, my DH is the same. Keeps everything just in case. I have no qualms about removing things without him knowing. A bit like going through kids toys while they're at school Grin

Betsy86 · 06/01/2018 20:57

Good work stealth!! I love it when i get a late night energy burst tend to get so much done!!
Annoying about hoarder husbands though gahhhhh glad im single at times like this only myself to argue with lol.
Defo rig the box of glasses to have a unfortunate accident in the near future...

Done quite alot today declutterd handbags off top of wardrobe and loads of random bits in my bedroom and random toy boxes. threw out 2 bags of rubbish one of recycling and put 3 big bags of ‘carboot’ stuff into my storage cupboard.

Realised i like how things looks when not cluttered, but hate the getting rid part. So now the cupboards empty of xmas things anything that needs to go has been instantly going in there. I plan to get it all out price it up for a carboot to the first one i can get to in spring and anything not gone goes charity shop on way home. Feel like if i tey to make something back towards something nice to do or savings for dd then its worth it and can talk myself into letting go.
Just have to hope i get round to actually doin the sell and bot just having a packed cupboard for years lol x

Gibble1 · 06/01/2018 21:46

I had a look and can’t find the January cure thread 😕.
DSis came today so we decluttered more of the bubbly bits of food and I sent her home with her bag and cool blocks.

mybrainhurtsalot · 06/01/2018 21:52

Here’s the link, Gibble:

I’m lurking on several threads hoping to get inspiration to sort my house out.

Smile
PenelopeFlintstone · 06/01/2018 22:46

Sorry Gibble1, I didn't see that you couldn't find it.

StealthNinjaMum - it might possibly distract you as you seem to be very self-motivated and generally going great guns. I personally don't mind the 'push' of two different threads. Saves me having to come up with anything!

abitoflight · 07/01/2018 11:29

Yesterday I was busy with DC but did manage to take a book to charity shop (puppy training - she's not a puppy anymore) and empty freezer of out of date vegetarian products that DD obviously didn't like so more organised freezer space
Today will be financial printing and filing of invoices ready for tax return

PenelopeFlintstone · 07/01/2018 12:08

abitoflight - A book is a thing, so it counts :)
I didn't exactly get one thing out, but did arrange today for someone to take a piece of furniture. It's being picked up tomorrow but I'll count it for today and make sure I do another item tomorrow too.

SandAndSea · 07/01/2018 12:46

I'm still going steadily.

Following my cutlery drawer extravaganza, I decided this morning that I really don't like the teaspoons either so they are going too. Ditto some old toiletries.

The paperwork mountain is now back on the dining room table, ready for sorting and I'm about to finish some diy which I started months ago.

I'm also doing the 30 day yoga with Adriene thread - decluttering stiffness, hunching and podge. Feels good!
