Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

Minimal today. 2 more bottles and 2 mugs printed and in my work bag for tomorrow.
Threw away a cardboard box full of stuff into the recycling and at least a carrier bag full of broken bits into the bin.
New door is in. Needs work to make the frame look good as it required a fair amount of adjustment and part of the ceiling had to come down around the lintel but not sure if he’ll do that or DH. If it’s dh, it’s going to be next year.
Tiles are sitting in the kitchen waiting to go on tomorrow. Then when I get home from Cubs, I have to help DH shift oh so much stuff into the hallway ready for the carpet cleaning on Saturday.
I’ve told him to film it cause I find it very therapeutic watching carpet cleaning 😂

SandAndSea · 14/12/2017 16:26

I've done loads today! The decorator has been to eye us up and is starting this weekend (weather allowing). So that should be done in time for Christmas. I've got everything now for the job and also been to the dump and the charity shop (2 big sacks!). My car boot has never looked so clear! I've also done a big shop and I've now got all the Xmas groceries, apart from the fresh stuff which we'll get locally.

I've also ticked another maintenance job off my list. (It had been on there for over a year.)

The doom room is still (largely) spread across the dining room table but I have cleared a few boxes and piled all the paperwork boxes together. So, it's moving!

I think eBay has reduced seller fees so I'm going to be biting the bullet on that soon.

Gasp!

Having a slow day today. Have been sorting through pillowcases, trying to decide which ones to throw - not the most interesting of jobs. Have decided to store spares in matching pairs from now on. That's interesting, isn't it? (Zzzzz....)

One thing worth noting though - in comparing all my pillowcases at once, it's very clear which ones are worth buying and which aren't. I won't be so quick to buy a Tesco set again. Wilko and John Lewis (Jonelle) have lasted well though.

I think I've got someone coming for the printer soon, which will be great. I'm sick of seeing it.

Also plates - not too impressed with IKEA - they haven't lasted well at all, compared to others. Am going to have to buy more to replace them.

Building up to saying goodbye to a much loved, cuddly toy. I've been trying to interest the cat in it (new cat bed?) but she's not at all interested. So, it has to be done.

SandAndSea · 15/12/2017 17:39

Keep coming across the same bits and bobs which I've been not throwing out for decades, like beautiful, vintage, cot bedding. Is there a market for such things? If so, would it be worth my time trying to sell it or should I just charity shop it? Dilemmas...

StealthNinjaMum · 15/12/2017 19:41

Well done SandandSea. I had another day procrastinating over selling things. A woman didn't turn up to collect something I was giving away for free which is annoying.

I had a major declutter of my bedding about Easter time but didn't quite get rid of everything. I am about to try to sell some bedding tonight or tomorrow. I have a few toddler bedsets but they seem an unusual size and not available in many shops any more so might be hard to sell. It would be a shame to have to give them away as rags because they were expensive from places like Great Little Trading Company and John Lewis and I really loved tucking my toddlers up in them. I also have a double bed bedding set that I love but the colours don't match the room so I will try to sell them tonight or tomorrow as well. I am hoping that people want to buy my bedding to spruce their house up before xmas.

I put on a CD I bought in a charity shop today and it didn't work so I suppose my one thing I am getting rid of today is that!

Gibble1 · 15/12/2017 21:17

One extra thing that I managed to get rid of today was some left over floor tiles. Kitchen man was in fitting the tiles and I asked if he tile the step and he said yes.

SandAndSea · 15/12/2017 22:32

Thanks, Ninja. Smile

Well, the vintage, cot bedding is in the charity sack! Whoop-whoop! I considered dying it for cushion covers but realised it wouldn't work. I then looked around the house whilst thinking of it and realised that it really isn't 'me'. There's actually a good reason it's been stored away for years - I don't really like it! I just like the idea of it, which isn't the same. So, it's going, which is great.

The printer has also left the building!

The cuddly toy is still here though. Hmm

SandAndSea · 16/12/2017 11:39

It's Saturday! The loft is open and it's ALL GO!! StarXmas SmileBrew

Gibble1 · 16/12/2017 17:36

3 boxes of tiles removed from the house. 15 stuck to the wall 😁
Carpets have been cleaned and look much better now.

Betsy86 · 16/12/2017 23:34

Well done sand&sea and gibble good work. Hows the loft??

I also procrastinate over selling things i get on my own nerves looking at same bags of stuff Angry

SandAndSea · 17/12/2017 13:44

Hi all! All good thanks, Betsy. And, well done, Gibble.

Did quite a bit yesterday. Put more on freebay and half-filled another sack. Started sorting some papers too - not too much tbh - it was a bit overwhelming. But, the dining room table is now almost clear!!

I've really got to get some more done today to make room for the tree so must dash! How's everyone else doing?

SandAndSea · 17/12/2017 13:46

PS Have dyed my hair this morning - that counts too, right?! Grin

Betsy86 · 17/12/2017 20:20

Doing your hair definitely counts after all ur decluttering a packet of dye from your life Grin
Glad your making good progress!!
Got my friend to put some stuff online to try and sell as i dont do social media but not moved yet i should of done it sooner to close to xmas guess most people have bought toys now darn.
Still have same bag of clutter sat in my front room honestly its been there soooo long its become like a ornament lol. Dont know why im so attatched o it could easily charity shop it etc i guess but keep thinking ooh it might sell or someone i know might want it but no still sat there untouched.
I did go to the tip today tho wahoo took a load of cardboard and all the rubbish out my bin and more id created as bin days after xmas now so wanted to free up abit of rubbish space! Love going to the tip with actual rubbish/recycling im jus no good at decluttering things that are decent!!x

StealthNinjaMum · 18/12/2017 13:46

Well done, you're all doing so much better than me.

So Friday, I mentally got rid of a CD (obviously it's still in the house!)
Saturday, we went to a party and we took a bottle of mulled wine that's been hanging around for a couple of years with our other alcohol. Dh and I never drink a whole bottle of wine in one go so just had no use for the mulled wine but I know the party host used it.

School has now finished so it will be hard to get much done but I did go through a box of stuff in the baking cupboard. I threw out some gone off icing and some birthday candles. I also had some unused banners that say 'Happy 4th birthday' so gave them to a friend with a younger child. This has cleared a space the size of a shoebox.

I also wrapped up some presents yesterday using paper I hate that has been hanging around for about 5 years. I bought it from Ikea as it was really cheap. I probably have about 8 rolls of wrapping paper and I have realised this and not bought more. I am trying to wrap up more as I go along now so in future I will only need to own a couple of rolls.

SandandSea was your table full of the doom room stuff? I can't believe you have cleared out your doom room I am so jealous. My room of doom still looks like someone took a three foot high pile of papers and a very strong fan and blew them all over the room. I might stick a dvd on later and do a bit more tidying while dds watch a dvd.

SandAndSea · 18/12/2017 15:08

Ninja - yes, we had emptied almost everything from the spare room into the dining room. I have to say, there is more to do (eg loads of paperwork) but I've broken through the fear barrier, which is great.

My downstairs is currently an utter tip (temporarily) but, the tree is up and the presents are all wrapped. I've decided to pause most of the clutter clearing now, in favour of cleaning, tidying and laundry in preparation for Christmas. I like the house to be all lovely for then so we can all relax as much as possible. I've got a sack to take to charity now and I'm going to include the freebay stuff just to get it out of the house. I've also got a Christmas garland which I'm taking back cos it made me feel sad. Grin

Well done, everyone for all that you're doing. It's all sounding great!

Betsy86 · 18/12/2017 16:10

Well done with the progress even shoe box size clearout id better than nothing!! And you put banners to good use!
With wrapping paper i had alot that i got really cheap before but have use it over the last 2 years as pass the parcel wrapping paper as i had nicer stuff for presents and it wasnt getting used up!
I am on my last roll of all paper now that will go this week.
Cant lie though hate paying full price for xmas wrap etc so if i see any dirt cheap ones after xmas i will be restocking lol. But alteast used up what i had!
Had abit of a clean round today not achieved much gave out some xmas cards so one bag gone lolx

StealthNinjaMum · 18/12/2017 16:20

Thanks betsy it just feels such slow progress and because it was inside a cupboard it makes no difference to the tidiness of the house! Now DC are home the house is a tip and yet we have less clutter than we have ever had. I know it will end one day - just not soon enough.

Betsy86 · 18/12/2017 20:10

I know the feeling you tidy something nobody else can see and feel like haven’t got anywhere. Atleast when you open that cupboard it will feel more organised!
I was putting away clean washing got to last item and the wardrobe rail collapsed totally annoying and left the whole lot in a heap.... its still there!

Gibble1 · 18/12/2017 23:07

Today I got rid of 3 bottles and 1 mug. I also had orders for more mugs today.
Decluttered 6 packets of liebkuchen (sp?) and a large bag of crisps. They came in and straight out.
Finished off a roll of wrapping paper. Will finish off another tonight or tomorrow as it’s DS’s Birthday tomorrow.
DDs decluttered to Berlin for a few days.
Am off work until Friday now. Hope to declutter some doors and handles as new lounge and dining room doors will be fitted tomorrow.
I absolutely MUST get some cleaning and washing done tomorrow as we are drowning in mire.
We have bought some pretty Christmas items though and they are on the fireplace.
Oh, also decluttered a lamp from the lounge. DDs claimed it for her room though.
Sounds like you’re all going great guns 😁

SandAndSea · 18/12/2017 23:37

Aww, never mind, we all have setbacks sometimes.

I know I said I was pausing but it turns out I'm kinda on a roll at the moment. DP was watching First Dates tonight so I thought I'd sort out my box of ribbons and bows (etc - for wrapping presents). I threw out quite a bit of weird stuff. For some reason, I had collected quite a few, very small, plastic bags and a broken ping pong ball!! At the end of it though, the same box went back to the same shelf, looking just the same. Smile It looks nice in my head though.

I have also discovered that I have a penchant for boxes. I have 6 lovely ones currently stacked on the stairs - hovering between the loft and the bin. It's a tough call. (Truth is, it would be 7 but the cat took a liking to one of them and I folded.) Grin

SandAndSea · 18/12/2017 23:39

Gibble, we cross-posted. Sounds like you've done well.

SandAndSea · 19/12/2017 00:44

I've just remembered what the broken ping pong ball was for!! It was to make bath bombs!!! Phew! (Not crazy - YAAY!!)

Gibble1 · 19/12/2017 08:39

Sand, hahahaha! Bath bombs. Did you ever use it though?
Ds’s Birthday today. Gave him part of his gift. A projector with the cables to connect to his phone. I don’t think I have ever seen him look less impressed 😕 and yet he went on and on about having one.
Anyhoo, wash no.1 on. Many more to do.

StealthNinjaMum · 19/12/2017 09:52

Betsy that happened to dd1 - her wardrobe rail collapsed think she was swinging on it like a monkey. It took a couple of weeks for dh to put it back up so I decluttered her clothes. It did us a favour.

Laughing at the broken ping pong ball. My house is full of weird plastic bits that might have a purpose. Increasingly I am throwing them away.

I wrapped more presents last night and now only have 11 rolls of Xmas wrapping paper! Think that will lat for another couple of years.

I had a minor victory after my depressed post yesterday which put things into perspective. Dd1 has an 11+ tutor and I forgot he had arranged to come round yesterday. He knocked on the door and there was no time to do the mad tidy up. To my delight the hall and dining table, where he sits with dd1, were clear and he just walked in and sat down to tidiness and no clutter. This is some clutter on a sideboard in the dining room (papers and stuff) so I'm not in a perfect house but compared to last year I'm very happy. Today I am going to tidy bits of the sideboard and maybe the cupboard under the stairs.
