Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

sandandsea that's good news about the bills, I do see that as part of decluttering and have been filing my utility bills.

Dh seemed surprised that I wanted to take the computer to the dump but as I have unscrewed the sides he is now aware it is going.

Gibble1 · 09/12/2017 17:57

Today I have got rid of a cake dome. Only £5 but more room for me and it’s beautiful so I hope she loves it 😁. Am also taking a bottle of prosecco out tonight with me.

SandAndSea · 09/12/2017 18:06

he is now aware it is going

Haha! That made me laugh -it's so familiar. Grin

StealthNinjaMum · 09/12/2017 19:52

We worked out that the computer had been hanging around broken for a quarter of his life! he didn't see why it needed to go and seemed bemused by my determination to dispose of it. Anyway the memory has gone and I can take it to the dump next week.

I sorted out some paperwork and found letters from solicitors about our house purchase today eryri. I think I will probably keep everything relating to this purchase and then maybe throw things away related to the flat I bought before. That was in the 1990s presumably there's no reason to keep them says the woman who has every bank statement since 1980 Dds weren't as needy as usual today so I did quite a lot of paperwork. I will be doing lots of shredding tonight.

Gibble1 · 11/12/2017 20:58

Today I got rid of 8 drinks bottles and have orders for 6 more and a mug. Also a birthday present. And we have had leftovers for tea to use up some gubbins.

SandAndSea · 12/12/2017 00:15

Well, I thought I'd slacked off today so I decided to go through our bedding this evening. I've ended up binning a sackful of old stuff: 2 large mattress protectors, some curtain ties etc. I know I've got too many pillow cases too but I lost the will. Still, not too bad for a slow day!

SandAndSea · 12/12/2017 00:17

Just to clarify: when I say 'binning', I mean the rag bin, not the rubbish bin.

StealthNinjaMum · 12/12/2017 09:52

A good day. Bags and bags of shredded paper have left the house. The broken electrical goods are ready to leave the house and I have more piles of charity shop stuff. The roads are a bit icy so I might wait til the weekend. I have also put a few more bits for sale on Facebook.

I have also been sorting through dd2s clothes because she has had a growth spurt. .

SandAndSea · 12/12/2017 09:56

Well done, Ninja! Sounds great!

SandAndSea · 12/12/2017 10:33

Is anyone else surprised at how, even after getting rid of many sackfuls of stuff, the house is still full? I've found it quite amazing. I've definitely got more spaces now, but it's far from empty.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 12/12/2017 11:48

Re motivated to de clutter as just found out I'm pregnant! Eek! So happy

tigercub50 · 12/12/2017 12:47

I am a bit of a hoarder but equally find it very satisfying when I have a clearout, especially DD’s stuff as she keeps EVERYTHING! Today I am going through some bags & boxes that have been lying around since we moved in. The charity shop will do well!

StealthNinjaMum · 12/12/2017 13:02

My house is definitely still too full but much of my clutter was shoved in cupboards which are definitely clearer. I am much better organised and tasks like finding bedding or tidying things away is easier.

Congratulations grumpysquirrel. A thread baby! Please keep us updated. Is it your first? How exciting. And well done for decluttering before the baby was born. Hopefully you won't end up like me!

SandAndSea · 12/12/2017 13:35

Congratulations, Grumpy! Lovely news.

Well, I'm doing OK today. Our air fryer has finally died so is by the door, ready to leave the building. I just love throwing out big items like that.

I've also been going through my herbs and have thrown out the equivalent of a large shoe box full.

I'm aware that I'm avoiding tackling certain big jobs (clearing old laptops, sorting photos, paperwork etc). But, at least I'm still moving in the right direction.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 12/12/2017 14:33

Thank you Smile it's my second baby (well my first is almost 13 now!) but been trying for a year with my now DH (including 1 miscarriage) so really really thankful! Feeling very lucky and just hope this one works out 🤞🏼

So.. house. Well we have living room being redecorated this week but that's already pretty minimalist. I think I'll have to get DH to tackle the kitchen clutter as that's the worst but it's his domain. FIL is taking a huge table that we don't use (except as a clutter store!) but he needs an appropriate vehicle to be able to move it.

Gibble1 · 12/12/2017 19:11

Congratulations grumpy!
Nowt out today. 18 boxes of tiles in but they will be stuck to the walls soon so will be out again within a week.
New front door being fitted tomorrow so an old door will be out ASAP and the new dog flap will be decluttered into the new door.

StealthNinjaMum · 12/12/2017 19:38

Hmmm talk of doors Gibble reminds me we have a few in the garage that we moved from the last house 8 years ago

I attempted to go to the dump and charity shop today and the car was frozen solid. Took about 3/4 of an hour to defrost in then it was pickup time so I didn't have time.

On a small scale For the last two days, while dds have been doing homework, I have been testing one of our shoeboxes of pens and pencils sharpening pencils and throwing pens away that no longer work.

Gibble1 · 12/12/2017 19:49

I have just finished off a tub of stuff and put the tub in the recycling. Also remembered that I returned 4 sample tiles to the tile shop today and got £3+ back. Found out that when you pay contactless with your phone, it gives a different card number than your card. Interesting, I thought.

Gibble1 · 13/12/2017 00:07

Productive evening. 8 bottles and two mugs printed. Will take to work in the morning. But Dd has scratched the bath with a flipping metal bowl and pulled the plug off it. She’s so careless. 😕

Betsy86 · 13/12/2017 00:30

Gingernaut · 13/12/2017 01:38

Someone has probably posted this already.

If not, IT'S LIGHTHEARTED

AliceWhatsth3Matter · 13/12/2017 20:16

A week since I posted! I took the van full of junk to the recycling centre. That was very, very, satisfying.

Since then I have delivered 4 parcels to a family member. Some of those had been in my study for months.
I washed and then donated 2 duvets to a charity.

I've not managed a bag a day but I've got a bit of time off work and doing some serious decluttering will be one of my main goals. I can't do any lifting for a while but I can sort, clean and shred.

I also want to sell some stuff via Facebook, gumtree and eBay. For some reason I procrastinate doing that but I must get on and do it.

StealthNinjaMum · 13/12/2017 22:52

I have been trying to sell / give away things today and have possibly got rid of two quite big baby / toddler toys. I think a few people have said they really hate the whole process of selling things, I do too. It seems to take forever and involve endless waiting in for people who are always late.

AliceWhatsth3Matter · 13/12/2017 22:57

I've had mixed success, but I'm going to put some things up for sale. It is a hell of a faff though.

Betsy86 · 13/12/2017 23:01

Totally agree selling stuff is hard work!!! Iv got so many things to try and sell mainly because good condition and know i could make some money towards things we need buttttt it jus sits there in the way forever it seems! Mainly because im slow at it all lol
