Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

Someone just collected a big baby bouncer? Yay a bit more space. Am wondering whether to take dds to the dump now to get rid of our broken electrical items.

SandAndSea · 19/12/2017 15:30

Oh, well done on the clear table, Ninja! It's wonderful when you start to notice things like that. Going to the dump is always uplifting too - afterwards I mean, when the stuff has gone.

Gibble - yes, I used to make them. (This also helps to explain several boxes of herbs, petals and oils.) Tbh I'm tempted to rescue the broken ping pong ball but I'm trying to be strong.

I've had a few setbacks today. Firstly, the router stopped working and the utility supplier couldn't guarantee delivery before Xmas. So, we ended up having to drive miles to find a new one. (Our local PC shops don't sell them.) Rather than making the most of the trip, we then had to rush straight home for the decorator. But, unfortunately, on arrival, he discovered that the outside wall was too wet to paint so had to cancel. Our nosy cat somehow managed to get masonry paint on her tail, so I had to wash it. (She wasn't too impressed, as you might imagine.) Then, whilst trying to clean a candlestick, I spilled hot wax all over the kitchen floor. (I am currently building up to ironing the floor to get it off.) Smile

So, I haven't done much clearing yet today, apart from the old router, which has been replaced. I have moved a few things about though! Grin

SandAndSea · 19/12/2017 15:54

@SandSnakeOfDorne - How are you doing?

AliceWhatsth3Matter · 19/12/2017 16:11

Just sold a dog crate! So a bit of cash and a bit less clutter.

Mostly doing admin today but it gets it out the way.

Gibble1 · 19/12/2017 16:26

I have got rid of 2 sacks full of junk today from DS and DD’s bedrooms.
DS’s room has been cleared and cleaned and he has now set up his projector 📽.
I have done eleventy billion loads of washing and the kitchen man has almost finished hanging the lounge and dining room doors. Grouting is all done. Now we have the big push to get sorted and ready for Christmas 🎄

AliceWhatsth3Matter · 19/12/2017 17:09

I have done a fraction of my usual Christmas decorating this year. Only me and DS 20 here at he moment and I'm recovering from illness.

It still looks lovely. Today I surveyed it and thought "That'll be a lot quicker to put away this year!".

AliceWhatsth3Matter · 19/12/2017 21:59

Got rid of a carrier bag of recycling. Old tourist guides from the 90s, that kind of thing which my parents had stashed away in their attic. For some reason.

A small step forward.

Betsy86 · 20/12/2017 02:22

Everyones doing so well :)
Annoying about dropping the wax though!
I still havent sorted out the collapsed clothes rail in wardrobe lol! I was decluttering dds tiny room ready for xmas stuff but all iv done is make about 4 bin bags of stuff that i now dont know what im doing with.... once xmas bits are out of my storage cuboard i guess they could go in there and am decorating after xmas so figured anything else im getting rid of can go in there... then my plan was to do a bootsale and whatever doesnt sell can go to charity shop.
Its all nice stuff and it pains me not to try and make something back....
But at the same time i know i could just bag the lot charity it and be free of the mess swifty rather than just ‘stuffocate’ myself even more i just cant reason with myself. Gahhhhhh xx

AliceWhatsth3Matter · 20/12/2017 08:59

I get stuck in that cycle too. Maybe we need to make firm plans- book the place at the boot sale, organise stuff ready to sell, price tickets and the like?

Otherwise it all just makes a big "To Be Sold, one day" pile of clutter.

Gibble1 · 20/12/2017 12:10

So far today, just one bin bag removed from the kitchen bin. However (drum roll please).... my kitchen is now finished and the kitchen man has ordered 3 mugs and 2 bottles so that will be more clutter gone 😁

SandAndSea · 20/12/2017 13:19

Great news on the kitchen, Gibble. Smile

Well, I advertised something on fb a while back and it didn't sell, so I decided to keep it and use it instead and guess what? I've got a buyer coming tonight!

I've also freed up 2 suitcases which were under the bed and am now debating whether or not to get rid of them. One definitely doesn't bring joy (ref. Kondo) so I think that will be going today.

The decorator is here again today and the window man is getting back to us soon so that could well all be done before Xmas.

Right! I'm off to finish the bedrooms now followed by the launderette to dry all the washing. It's all go!!

StealthNinjaMum · 21/12/2017 15:21

Very jealous of the home improvements I'm reading about Sand and Sea Gribble. Must be making such a difference removing clutter and having newly decorated rooms.

I went to the dump Tuesday which was enormously satisfying. Broken electrical goods are gone.

Since then I haven't done much other than putting items for sale on Facebook. I am going to stick dds in front of the television (again!) while I tackle some stuff in the room of doom. Dds have never seen so much television before!

SandAndSea · 21/12/2017 18:29

Don't be too jealous, Ninja. My window man couldn't come till the new year in the end and my buyer didn't show up. Hey-ho! DP has been working with me today. He fixed up a light and put a box together for outside and has stored all the old paints away. I should be finished with all my Xmas house prep tomorrow, which is great. I put a big box away in a cupboard today and it fitted in there easily - very satisfying. And, when I went to the supermarket the other day, the shopping bags fitted easily into the boot - none of the usual squeezing and juggling. I'm really feeling the results of all the clearing now.

StealthNinjaMum · 21/12/2017 19:12

I have four people coming tomorrow / Saturday to pick up junk things I'm selling so I will be really pleased if they all turn up. They don't take up much space but it's still progress.

Today I threw away some of dds crafts. Feel a bit guilty but they do so much we just can't store it all.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 21/12/2017 19:47

Bike buyer picked it up today! 1 less bike in the house 🙌🏼

StealthNinjaMum · 22/12/2017 09:43

Excellent news Grumpy, that's a nice big item gone.

I put loads of stuff on facebook yesterday that hasn't had any interest so I think I'll bump it today and if it still doesn't go it'll be the charity shop tomorrow. Feeling sad as some of it's lovely baby stuff - but then I've been attached to it for too many years anyway so it needs to go!

StealthNinjaMum · 22/12/2017 16:11

An embarrassing update. Decided to spend a few minutes emptying my handbags. Managed to find lots of useful stuff like pens, hair clips, money, USB sticks but also a whole very full carrier bag full of old tissues, receipts, make up that has presumably gone off and tickets for things.

New year's resolution 1: Always empty handbag when swapping to new one.

Hope everyone else is OK.

Gibble1 · 22/12/2017 17:56

Managed another carrier bag out today. Now home for Christmas. Have to return DD’s pyjamas as I have picked up a size 6! She’s a size 14. She’d not thank me for that!

StealthNinjaMum · 23/12/2017 09:33

Had a late night last night, tidied for about three hours and came up with about 10 carrier bags of stuff to go to charity shop or rubbish. I bagged up lots of toys and things the dds don't play with and haven't done for years. Feeling very pleased with myself, normally I'm in bed by 9.

Betsy86 · 23/12/2017 20:06

Ahhh amazing progress your all doing so well!! Good work Stealth love nights like that when you have a energy burst to do things!!
Was hoping that would get me today had today off work was hoping i wouls sort last bits of presents out pack paper etc away clean upstairs change beds do washing..... currently led eating quality street with minimal achievements. Hows rest of your days been?x

StealthNinjaMum · 23/12/2017 21:45

Ha betsy I have days like that too. I have had another really good day where I wrapped most presents, did more decluttering and finished my shopping. Despite all my efforts the house is a mess as I have spent so long decluttering rather than tidying up so I am going to try to get the house tidy tonight for inlaws who arrive Xmas day. Mil is quite sweet but always comments on my messy house. Not this year she won't!

StealthNinjaMum · 25/12/2017 09:55

Good work Freshprincess. I find I often don't do much then really blitz the place. Having said that since this thread started I now always get rid of one thing a day no matter how small - sadly today's item will be a gravy boat dh broke yesterday.

Yesterday's good news was I persuaded dh to throw away a rucksack that was full of holes, unusable and had been hanging around in MY wardrobe for about five years!

Today dds brought their Santa presents in my room so I could see them open them and I struggled to take photos without clutter on my dressing table. Next Christmas I would like minimal clutter on dressing tables and bedside drawers so I can take clear photos.

Merry Christmas everyone!

PenelopeFlintstone · 26/12/2017 05:21

Hi Everyone, can I join in? I have got a LOT of junk in my house! So far today I've sold a small kitchen appliance and 2 separate bags of books. Typing this here feels a bit like writing something on my To Do list that you've just done - just so you can have the satisfaction of ticking it off! Grin

PenelopeFlintstone · 26/12/2017 05:22

Oh, and someone also came and collected a laptop case that they'd bought off my Facebook. So, four carrier bags out today. Yippee!
