Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

2 very full carrier bags gone to charity shop. A mixture of clothes, mugs, kitchen bits. I donated some mugs. I still have 30 mugs but they fit in the cupboard and don't have to sit inside each other.

Am about to turn the Christmas music on and tackle dd2s happyland toys.

StealthNinjaMum · 06/12/2017 14:42

Whizzed through dds bedrooms and chucked loads out of plastic bits out and tidied stuff up. Have got a pile of things to sell on Facebook /or take to a charity shop. Tidied their wardrobes mainly by moving toys to playroom which means I have made t he house messier again! I don't really mind sai found things they never play with as they don't see them so this should improve that.

Will spend the last 20 mites before pickup clearing away arts and things.

Well, the printer has made it into the living room where it is still waiting for its cartridges, so I can advertise it.

SandAndSea · 06/12/2017 15:12

Been going through some woolies and remembered that we have a bench in town where people put scarves etc for anyone who's cold to take. Have a nice little collection to pop down there later.

SandAndSea · 06/12/2017 16:34

The printer and cartridges are now up for sale! Woop-woop! I hate doing those ads, it always takes me ages. It's a bargain so will hopefully be gone soon.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 06/12/2017 19:29

Checking in to say I finally put DD's bike on eBay 👍🏼

SandAndSea · 06/12/2017 21:26

Oh well done, Squirrel. Good luck with the sale.

Gibble1 · 06/12/2017 22:47

Well done everyone sounds like good progress being made.
I have a huge Ikea bag overflowing with blankets which have all been wrapped ready to give the cubs at their Party tomorrow evening. I also have 2 shopping bags full of mugs and drinks bottles which have been printed and sold so now need to take to work and cubs tomorrow. DS has secured a space on the world scout jamboree 2019 so needs to raise £3495 to go. He’s printing and selling mugs, enamel mugs and bottles. He may do tshirts soon too.
I have also provisionally sold a cake dome on Facebook. Another £5 to his jamboree pot!

StealthNinjaMum · 07/12/2017 00:23

Well done sand and sea and grumpysquirrel I hope the printer and bike go quickly.. i don't know how to advertise on eBay so do Facebook but I do find it quite stressful.

Dh's aunt popped in to drop off Xmas presents just as I had been sorting out toys so I was able to give her some orchard board games and an unopened craft set for her granddaughter (ie the 2nd cousin to my dds). Feel pleased that's another bag gone, I've done 10 or 11 this week.

StealthNinjaMum · 07/12/2017 14:02

Sorted through the wardrobe in the room of doom as its where I keep presents, school stuff and some arts and craft stuff. Threw away about a bagful of dcs arty things. Feel guilty about chucking it away, it is so bad for the environment but dds are the sort of kids who will take an old egg box and turn it into a glittery monster so we have a mountain of the stuff.

StealthNinjaMum · 07/12/2017 21:21

Am I the only left? Have I killed the thread? (Or do I have the biggest hoarding problem?)

Put kids to bed and spotted a Thomas pink bag and iron box. Dh must have put them ibehind the bin in our bedroom months ago and I've just got used to them! They're now in a recycling bag downstairs.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 07/12/2017 21:47

Sent DH a photo of his clutter asking who he expected to clear it up. Grin

StealthNinjaMum · 07/12/2017 22:03

no! The chances are he has forgotten they are there - much as I grew used to them and if I mention them he'll announce he needs them. If I discretely chuck them out he'll never notice.

My girls break up from school next Friday. I aimed to get rid of 365 bags of clutter in the house / garage garden in one year and I'm up to over 300. I have six days to do 50 bags!

Eryri1981 · 07/12/2017 22:53

Spent the evening scanning and binning (for recycling) paperwork. Two box files done (down to a third of a box file that I need to keep hard copies of) and two box files to go.

It is also a delaying tactic for not doing my tax return!!!!

Gibble1 · 07/12/2017 23:18

Got rid of all the blankets and mugs and bottles today. Equivalent of 6 carriers full. Woohoo!
More bottles ordered by work colleagues today so have had to put in another order for bottles, paper and added 5 printable hold all’s. Will see how they sell 🤞

SandAndSea · 07/12/2017 23:32

You're all doing really well!

I've got rid of quite a few bits in recent days. Loads still to do though. Paperwork! Ahh!

I've also got a buyer booked to come tomorrow which is great news, not for the printer though, sadly.

The woolies are back in the house temporarily as it was too windy to leave them outside. I'm going to have to go again with string and safety pins to fix them to the bench. No biggie.

It's all coming along! :)

SandAndSea · 07/12/2017 23:37

One thing I'm really pleased I got rid of: a box of business cards from a biz I had a few years ago. I've previously avoided throwing them out as there was so much of 'me' in them. But I've done it now and it feels good! Smile

I've got a large cuddly toy I'm struggling with though. He's got a name fgs!! I just don't have the room but can't bear to give him away. It's a dilemma.

AliceWhatsth3Matter · 08/12/2017 10:44

May I join in? I am currently preparing my deceased relative's house for sale which is involving years and years worth of clutter. Attic full, outhouses too.

I also have too much in my own home -some of which is theirs! I'm probably downsizing in the next year and need to get rid of this excess stuff in cupboards and, of course, the spare bedrooms.

Today I'm taking a van load of rubbish, basically, to the dump. I've loaded it up and I'll be taking it later. It's a small dent in the mountains of stuff, but I'll feel I'm getting somewhere.

We can do this, right?

SandAndSea · 08/12/2017 10:53

Course we can, Alice!

Just keep going and you'll get there.

StealthNinjaMum · 08/12/2017 11:06

Well done Alice that sounds like a massive job. Someone up thread posted articles about people who declutter to save their children from doing the job, it's definitely one of my considerations.

Today I have focused on paperwork and have shredded / bagged up several hundred bits of old paperwork. I now have about 4 large recycling bags of stuff for the bin men next week.

I am also building up a pile of electrical things to take to the dump. I have a printer that doesn't work, my old shredder, and I have just put dh's old computer on his side of the bed with some screwdrivers so he can take the memory out.

AliceWhatsth3Matter · 08/12/2017 11:53

Thanks for the encouragement, much needed.

Unfortunately I can't just lob boxes of assorted junk into the dump.

I want to recycle what I can and amongst some of these newspaper wrapped parcels are some lovely things from my childhood.

90% junk though.

StealthNinjaMum · 09/12/2017 10:15

Dh's computer (which broke 10 years ago) is now on the bedroom floor. It has been in the spare room (used as a bedside table) for at least three years and we have got used to it. Dh keeps saying he is too busy to destroy the memory chip which has confidential information on it so I will be taking its lid off shortly so he HAS to do it.

SandAndSea · 09/12/2017 15:54

Today I've sold something, taken more things to the Charity shop and saved over £550pa on my gas and electricity bills by switching!! (which has been on my list for ages!!) I've also swapped Tesco vouchers for a restaurant token worth 4x more! (I know that's not a clutter thing but it's still worth mentioning, I think.) :)

SandAndSea · 09/12/2017 15:55

Ninja, you could just drill it. That's what we do.

Eryri1981 · 09/12/2017 15:57

Trying to declutter paperwork, anyone have any idea what I need to keep from house conveyancing (ie solicitors letters, search results), obviously the land registry document is filled safely but the rest is just taking up room and I'm too scared to throw it!
