Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

Just seen on tv that its ‘giving tuesday’ today! Encouraging giving stuff to charity shops/people thag will use them etc having a declutter.
Going to find atleast one thing to rehome..........

Medwaymumoffour · 28/11/2017 10:44

I might take some stuff to the charity shop today - bu5 I have dd with me so might come home with more..,,

BrutusMcDogface · 28/11/2017 13:38

Big bag of rubbish and another big bag of recycling out the door- woop!

StealthNinjaMum · 28/11/2017 13:57

I haven't been able to do anything for a couple of days (apart from sell a book collection on Facebook) but I am just about to do an hour of the dreaded paperwork before school pickup.

I have been spending so long decluttering (compared to cleaning) that I got behind on the normal housework - hoovering, washing, changing bedding etc so I have been doing that. Anyway I need to get back on it my 3 inch post pile is looking at me. A year ago it used to be about 4 times the size so it is a massive, massive improvement. Most of it is catalogues and the bills are paid through direct debit so it won't take long to clear.

Lotta thinking of you.

StealthNinjaMum · 28/11/2017 14:04

Medway well done on all the visitors. And good luck in the charity shop, our local ones are full of exciting looking toys with missing bits so I try to avoid them with dc.

Mil is threatening to visit next week for a night so I'll be frantically cleaning in anticipation of the visit. Usually the spare room is relatively clear but if you open the wardrobe a tonne of stuff falls out but the bed currently has piles of stuff to be sold or go to charity shop so I'll work on that tomorrow. I really need to set some targets for this week because I find that I achieve the most when I know what I have to do will grab a cup of tea and spend an hour setting targets and then do nothing

StealthNinjaMum · 28/11/2017 15:26

Done an hours worth of paperwork and feeling pleased with myself. The Room of Doom has a bigger area of visible carpet. Also I have gone through the kitchen and cobbled together about a carrier bag's worth of odd plates and bowls and another unwanted cheese grater.

I'm now looking at my glasses. I have lots of glasses that have gone cloudy with dishwasher use (some of these are 20 years old). How do people throw these away? I know that bottle banks always say you shouldn't throw away domestic glasses but do people do it anyway? They're too scruffy to give to a charity shop.

Gibble1 · 28/11/2017 23:15

All I managed to de clutter today was returning 2 items to screwfix. However, they are gone and I am £18 better off again. So am pleased I did it.

Betsy86 · 28/11/2017 23:35

Thats good gibble!! Decluttered and made money is a win!!

Gibble1 · 29/11/2017 10:27

Builder has come today to clad my futility room. Lots of polystyrene out of my dining room now! Sadly, can’t get on and do anything as dogs are here and need constant supervision. So I am mumsnetting. Else I might end up declutyering 2 woofers!

TheGrumpySquirrel · 29/11/2017 11:29

Futility room, great typo.

Gibble1 · 29/11/2017 17:33

No typo! That’s what I call it. Cause- you know 😂.
Boot full of stuff to tip today. Have cleared and cleaned the piano and the sideboard. Took sideboard drawer with me to shop to buy a new badge box for Cubs as I wanted to be certain that it would go in that drawer. Now have old badge box out ready to put badges across so I can chuck the old broken one. New one is far smaller so won’t fill with junk but I have managed to run the badges down quite significantly since I took over the badge ordering from the old Leader.
I have also bagged up all the errant paperwork so that I can sort at my leisure.
Dining room table is almost clear so I will finish that this evening and then dining room will be almost back to par.

StealthNinjaMum · 29/11/2017 20:40

Impressive work gibble.

I shredded and chucked out more papers today and some cooking pot lids that didn't have the cooking pots any more (think they were dh's). It doesn't feel like I am being very productive. I am getting rid of a few small things a day but the house never feels emptier.

Gibble1 · 30/11/2017 21:32

Had to work today so less done. However, I took to work 2 carrier bags full of decorating sheets which the girls at work were delighted to split between them.
DH has brought far less food into the house than he would normally get too as we can actually see in an instant what we have got!

YoungBritishPissArtist · 03/12/2017 12:30

I've read through this entire thread and it's really galvanised me in to action!

Packed up and ready to take out tomorrow:
-two big bags to the charity shop
-a bag of unused/expired meds to the chemist
-a bag of chargers/leads to the electrical recycling bank

I'm trying to drink a cup of herbal tea every day to clear some space in my tea and coffee cupboard Smile I'd take some to the food bank but the boxes are all opened.

StealthNinjaMum · 03/12/2017 18:41

Well done pissartist. The herbal tea drinking is hilarious. I have a similar thing in that I have been using hand cream and body lotion to empty my overflowing bathroom cabinet.

It's been slow here, Over the past week or so I have put things in a couple of charity shop bags and I'll put them in the car tonight. I have also shredded and filed a few papers. So while I am getting rid of at least one thing a day they're small things you wouldn't notice which I'm feeling a bit sad about.

Gibble1 · 03/12/2017 23:59

Today I emptied the hoover. And we lit the fire so that used up a bag of bracken logs. Did bugger all else though 😳

StealthNinjaMum · 04/12/2017 11:26

I wouldn't worry gibble sounds like you've an incredibly productive couple of weeks

I have done lots of housework in anticipation of mil visit. My spare room is usually 'guest ready' but it had xmas decorations out and charity shop piles so I tidied those away. I also went to the bottle bank. None of these are really decluttering but but they are kind of progress. Mil is usually rude about the state of my house, I'm not sure if she's been for a year so it'll be interesting to see if she notices it's tidier. she probably won't

I have thrown away a big cake box that fell apart whenever I put a cake in it and I have two big dustbin bags of paper and cardboard that I have collected over the last week so even though it feels like I've done nothing lots is leaving the house.

Gibble1 · 05/12/2017 11:02

While I was waiting for DS to get up to take him to the dental hospital A&E I sorted a pile of paperwork. One wastepaper basket full of rubbish. An equal amount to be filed 😕.
Am now here at A&E and could be here for most of the day. He kneed himself in the face last night and knocked his two front teeth backwards. Looks bad. Trying to see if we can save them.

StealthNinjaMum · 05/12/2017 12:31

Poor ds, I hope your day goes well and the teeth can be saved.

Mil has just left and unusually did not mention the house being a mess! i take it that means it meets her standards of tidiness cupboards are still overflowing with unneeded rubbish though

Today is bin day so lots has left the house.

SandAndSea · 05/12/2017 14:35

Only just found this thread - what an inspiring lot you all are!

I've been clutter clearing all year and have done loads but have fallen down a bit in the last couple of weeks.

I'm ill today so won't be doing much but have contacted a couple of sellers on eBay about refunds/returns. I'm also building up to selling a printer and cartridges. The cartridges are in the loft though so I might have to wait for DP to help get them.

I've been trying to sell a coffee maker for quite a while and have just decided to give it away. It needs to go.

Does anyone know if there's a way to recycle boots with holes in? (The holes are in the boot, not the sole.) Or should I just put them in the bin? (I'm guessing bin.)

I've already got a big sack in the boot ready to go and I'm still enjoying looking at our front garden after a double tip run at the weekend. (I'm basking in previous results to make up for lack of action today.)

I think I might go through the fridge soon. See what I can chuck.

Great thread!

SandAndSea · 05/12/2017 15:43

Just heard from one of the eBay sellers that they've credited me in full for the item, so I won't have to waste time sending it back. Woop-woop!! (I think the basking helped.)

Since my last post I've also cleaned round the kitchen, sorted the dishwasher, put washing on and made (a simple) dinner. It's all so much easier when the surfaces are clear. :) (Loads more to do but it's good to be positive.)

Where's everyone else?

StealthNinjaMum · 05/12/2017 16:50

I am in the car (with a full boot of stuff to go) while one dc has an after school activity and the other is playing on the iPad.

I went through a kitchen drawer and found a few more bits to go to a charity shop.

Tomorrow I have no plans so I think I am going to actually drop my bags off to the charity shop - parking is expensive in my town so I only go to the charity shop every couple of weeks.

I am also going to look for happylamd toys in dd2s bedroom so I can start selling complete sets, do more paperwork and sort though some arts and craft stuff. I try to set myself targets. It has been one carrier bag a day but that is getting harder ad I'm really tidying now and putting similar items together.

SandAndSea · 05/12/2017 18:00

Oh, well done, Ninja! Yes, I think targets are a good idea. I've emptied my Doom Room onto the dining room table which looks awful! I'm going to have to get down to it very soon.

Gibble1 · 05/12/2017 19:47

Well DS and I decluttered a sleep when we got home. The teeth are still in for now. Unlikely to survive. Just thanking my lucky stars that we have such fantastic nhs services.
DH has cleared the kitchen sides today. It’s looking great again.

SandAndSea · 06/12/2017 12:14

Fingers crossed for the teeth, Gibble. I was brought up with a story of a child whose tooth came out and was pushed back in the wrong way round and it survived. She grew up with a back-to-front tooth! So, you never know! :)
