Join me in getting rid of at least one thing a day decluttering challenge?

I am trying to declutter, starting with our loft and garage both of which need some work doing so need to be a lot emptier! After they're done I want to declutter the rest of the house. I've already got rid of loads of stuff but I'm starting to lose motivation alone!

We have quite strict rules for what we can put in rubbish so I'm selling, free cycling, taking stuff to the clothes bank etc. At least one thing a day. I'm hoping to be done by Christmas!

Anyone want to join me?

Betsy I am a master of hiding clutter too If we have visitors I can get my house 'visitor ready' relatively quickly - apart from a few messy piles my house is generally clean and tidy. (But I have got rid of 290 bags of rubbish this year which were all hidden in cupboards and the Room of Doom!)

I think it's getting increasingly hard to get rid of soft toys as they're not very hygienic. Dd school have a fair once a year so I donate some to them. I have got rid of some of my 40 year old cuddly toys recently but I make dds pick a few to get rid of them but I realise this is probably a battle I won't win for a few years. I have been focusing on selling toddler toys (which dd2 still loves years later) and jigsaw puzzles that take up lots of space.

I've justeft the charity shop!! Found somewhere to take baby stuff, and did a quick initial weed of everything outgrown, 3 bags of clothes, bouncy chair, play mat and some toys!!

StealthNinjaMum · 22/11/2017 16:52

Well done nottalotta.

I have shredded about 5 pieces of paper but filed stuff and put a few things away. I wasn't intending to do anything today as I went out xmas shopping but I did manage to do half an hour of sorting stuff out.

Tomorrow I am home all day so I am going to try to actually tidy / declutter all day.

YesThisIsMe · 22/11/2017 17:02

I’ve emptied my full shredder into the compost bin ready to start again, and have found the box where my previous employer’s pension docs need to go, so I can get them out of the Big Bag Of Miscellany and Doom and back where they actually belong. I’ve also had the plumber fix the bathroom sink so I can take all the toothbrushes and paste out of the kitchen. I’m also going to pay my credit card bill on the day it arrives so I can ditch the receipts that go with it, and file it away. At the same time I’m going to make my Xmas charity donations now so I can bin the begging letters I’ve kept as a reminder. No huge visible changes but progress of a sort. That’s why paperwork is such an arseache when it comes to decluttering - each piece is so tiny but they all require thought.

Medwaymumoffour · 22/11/2017 18:03

I’m done with my buying phase. I need to get back on it. 150 items left and only eight days to find them 😥

Yes same here my house is clean im abit ott on clean but clutter is just a never ending battle but can be made visitor ready swiftly Grin
Although if they happened to stumble through one of the bedroom doors by mistake i fear they would never find there way back out....

True is hard to shift soft toys there are all immaculate though dd was never really bothered by them jus been sat in big storage tubs in her room so really dont know why i cant let go lol. Telling myseld some have to go before the xmas build a bear hoard hits us lol.
Wow to 190 bags thats amazing!!!!!
Well done everyone sounds like some good progress happening atm xx

BrutusMcDogface · 22/11/2017 18:45

I think I might have posted in here before...maybe?!

Anyway, if I did, I achieved a grand total of nothing so now with dc4 on the way (aaaaaaghgggghhhhh!!) I need to get back on it in a very big way.

My problem is that I sort stuff out "to go" but then never actually get rid of it...so tomorrow I'm going to the charity shop!!

Lots of progress made here!

Gibble1 · 23/11/2017 00:27

Another 2 carloads of cardboard boxes to tip today. Also went to Ikea (again) and returned £200+ of kitchen stuff that isn’t needed.
Bought a load of kitchen stuff to help organise inside drawers and things but that’s all planned.
Kitchen fitter has gone for now but will be back before Christmas to fit a new back door and do the tiling for me.
I now have 2 days before I go back to work and I have to get everything back into the kitchen and weed out junk as I go 😱

Medwaymumoffour · 23/11/2017 09:19

Well done on taking things back to ikea. I never leave that place without £100 of candles I never use. But I’m set for a nuclear Winter I guess....

The best thing to do is put a charity bag over a door handle upstairs and downstairs. Once it’s full just put it in the boot, then it’s ready to go.

I’m back on it today. Hoovering under the sofa which is next the toy box / toy heap

Sparrowlegs248 · 23/11/2017 09:53

I've been given two large bin bags full of clothes for the boys. The size that Ds1 is just into so financall you this is great! He's pretty much set for the next year. But now I need to make room for them.

I've just gone through them it pretty much all of it is OK. I have been weeding my own baby clothes and have just binned about 15 manky old bibs with non sticky velcro.

I find with charity shop stuff I have to take it immediately. So yesterday I sorted the bags of clothes and toys, put them straight in the car and took them . Very satisfying.

Baby is just nodding off so going green to do a quick bit on the paperwork, going to mums tomorrow so will take it there to shred.

Betsy86 · 23/11/2017 18:10

Good progress folks :)
Im the same sort stuff out but it never leaves the house. Had the same bag of stuff sat in corner of front room ‘to sell’ never going to happen it needs to be out my house by monday if not sold then charity x

Gibble1 · 24/11/2017 00:10

Less progress here today. Car is filled with packaging to go to tip tomorrow and I will add more to it but am likely to be housebound for a lot of the day waiting for gas man to come and fit hob.
Have started the sorting and cleaning of stuff to go away in the new kitchen and am slowly excavating the dining room table. So much junk, I can’t wait until I have got rid of it all!

StealthNinjaMum · 24/11/2017 00:37

I procastinated all day. I cooked lots, went shopping and am now about to throw away a few bits of paper. What a pathetic effort.

I am so jealous of those of you with cars filled with bags. Tomorrow has to be better. I really need space before xmas.

StealthNinjaMum · 24/11/2017 11:48

A better day. I have finally finished sorting out Xmas decorations. A few home made ones are in the bin. Popping out to lunch with some friends today but am going to come back to do paperwork.

Sparrowlegs248 · 24/11/2017 20:46

Well done stealth. I shredded the paperwork I sorted yesterday, and went through the mountains of plastic cups and cutlery that the dc don't use. It's in a bag ready to go!

Gibble1 · 24/11/2017 23:34

I have a car full which was put in there on Thursday. I have a few more boxes of cardboard boxes and some items weeded out of the kitchen boxes as I put other stuff away.
More to do after work tomorrow 😱

StealthNinjaMum · 25/11/2017 14:52

It's not really decluttering but I have put some amazon packaging in a recycling bag.

I have also put one of my four cheese graters to one side to go to a charity shop. It was a present from a cousin and I do think of him when I see it but I never use it.

Sparrowlegs248 · 26/11/2017 14:12

Looks like ultimate declutter is occurring today. Husband us moving his stuff out. Well some of it.

Gibble1 · 26/11/2017 14:26

@nottalotta hope it goes ok. At least you will now be doing things under your own terms. Is he taking the jugs? (Or am I muddling you up with another poster?).
I have taken 2 car fulls of rubbish to the tip today. House is becoming considerably clearer. Sadly once all the big rubbish is gone, big wins like this become less frequent and then it becomes a slow slog to minimise carp.

Sparrowlegs248 · 26/11/2017 15:33

No that's me!! Haha. No, I don't think he's taken the jugs. Although I feel compelled to keep them for when he gets a flat. To make it homely Hmm

Well he's gone but will be bringing the children back later .

Medwaymumoffour · 27/11/2017 11:02

Visitors! Argh! Help!

Betsy86 · 27/11/2017 18:56

Hows it going with husband moving stuff out nottalotta??

Medway ohhh nooo are they planned guestd or just arrived?

I took 4 bags of rubbish, some hard plastic and carboard stufff and bag of textiles to tip today felt good. Have to face the bag of stuff sat in front room now thats been there agesssss and iv not sold it etc it needs to go this week charity or friends etc i dont care would like to sell but only random stuff just means it sitting there longer i guess x

Sparrowlegs248 · 27/11/2017 20:34

Nothing more gone today. He moved a lot of the stuff cluttering the house, yesterday. So the large pile in my bedroom is gone, and I can use my front door again (hallway has been full for years)

He'll be at work all week I imagine so nothing more will go yet.

Medwaymumoffour · 27/11/2017 22:44

Nott big hugs - although we’re not allowed to on MN so maybe a manly punch on the shoulder instead? I hope the departure is as painless as possible and you can both get on better with some distance and space between you.

Visitors was planned but we left tidying up till the weekend and I had a good tidy up today. But it was mentally hard work. I had a blood test in the morning and my bp must have been off the chart as it gushed out faster then main pressure water burst pipe 😂
We have visitor at the weekend so I need to maintain normality for the week.
So much paperwork went in the bin, tidying up makes me feel ashamed I let it all creep up n me like this. I just spent the weekend muttering ‘why??’ While looking at mountains of old unopened mail

Gibble1 · 27/11/2017 23:36

Medway, I do that with mail too. I need a system!
Lots more stuff put away in units tonight. About an equal amount deemed utter tripe and thrown away. Now have an almost clear worktop 😁.
Persuaded DH to get rid of a coffee pod holder that had rusted and is generally a pita. I would rather have boxes of them in the cupboard.
Cladding man due tomorrow so all the cladding will be removed from my dining room. Hope he will drink enough cups of tea for me to get the lid on the tea caddy too!
