Fledglings are raucous in August - the Flylady thread

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 31/07/2017 18:04

Thanks to paxillin for our August thread title Smile.

Hello all and welcome to the August Flylady thread. We are a friendly bunch who try to roughly follow the Flylady system. How strictly you follow it is of course up to you! Every day the thread leader posts information about which zone of the house we are in and the missions for the week.

Newbies are always welcome. All information is available on the Flylady website www.flylady.net

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

There is enough information on this thread to start getting on with things but you can also trawl through the (confusing at times) website:-

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

I'm on holiday this week with intermittent internet connection so will not be on much but will keep an eye on the thread and hopefully everyone else will feel free to jump in!

With it being summer holidays it may be pretty quiet on here but missions etc will be here for those who want them.

Sandycarrots · 31/08/2017 07:36

Good morning fledglings!

[SC flies back in to thread low from the east... crash lands in a large pile of laundry.]

Hope everyone is ok and had/is having a lovely summer!

For the first time in ages, we had a really fab, carefree summer and best of all, for the first time in living memory, dh actually took a decent slice of holiday ie 10 consecutive days whoo hoo! Makes it harder being back in the polluted city though!

Thread business:
Haven't caught up with thread and have to run dd to school this morning to pick up her text books for the year ahead and sort

paperwork etc - back this afternoon - but just wanted to say that I am available for thread running in Sept (or October) depending on who else has thrown their hat in to the ring!

Tally-ho and catch up later! Huge wing flaps to one and all!

Newchick · 31/08/2017 07:44

Hello all - haven't been on the thread for a while but have been keeping up with some flying basics. Need to get back into swing of it so thought I'd rejoin you in time for 1 Sept. nice to see some familiar faces and new ones here!

celeste4 · 31/08/2017 08:01

Morning all,

Hi Newchick and Sandy

No major plans for today as such. From the weather forecast i think ds and i will head to the park at some point in the morning as the afternoon looks set to be a washout here.

Blitzing the bathroom is on my list today. I will need to nip to the shop on my way back from the park to stock up on some bleach though. Millions of bathroom germs will die. Grin

Wheelycote · 31/08/2017 08:04

Morning☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️BrewBrewBrewBrewBrewBrewBrewBrewBrewBrew tea and coffee anyone

Not sure whether to start from the beginning as a fledgling or jump straight back in.

I might start from beginning to get back into the habits I.e the sink

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 31/08/2017 08:57

Morning all and welcome to the last day of August Smile.

I'm at work but will be back on at lunch.

Morning all! Thanks for the birthday wishes we all had a fab day, can't believe my littlest Caglet is 8 😱 (and that soon he will no longer be the youngest 😱😱).

Welcome back new and wheely (did a double take there as you're also on Frugaleers! My two favourite MN threads :)).

Hi SC so glad you had a lovely summer, and love the new moniker :o

Achieved nothing yesterday and starting to get annoyed by stretchy ligaments etc - can't walk far sometimes. Need to rewash current load as it's been left since Tuesday 😳😳 and then do another. Should make some phone calls and do a few internetty/paperworky errands too.

I'm going to adapt flylady to my own needs next month and write down the habits I really need most myself, so that I can spend September trying to cement them. Really depressingly embarrassingly basic stuff that frankly I should be doing already, but I'm NOT so there's no point pretending is there? We all have to start somewhere I guess. I will update when I've come up with the list.

Melatonin update - DD was asleep before 10pm last night. Within a few minutes of getting into bed (having stayed up late playing a board game DS got for his birthday). I am starting to let myself believe this may be more than coincidence now and that it is possibly actually slightly working Shock.

Mumofazoo · 31/08/2017 10:36

Morning all,
cag that's great about the melatonin. My eldest ds has been on it for 3 years now and it's a small blessing getting him to sleep.

Ta da
Dishwasher emptied
Breakfast done
Phoned podiatrist about youngest ds

To do
Last load of laundry
Next weeks meal plan
Go chemist

That's it for today as it's a pretty easy day.
Hope you all have a productive day Smile

Cagliostro · 31/08/2017 11:12

Thanks mum :)

I wrote a to do list... it's huge 😱 And doesn't include any of the decluttering and tidying that I really ought to be doing too 😱

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 31/08/2017 11:17

day one of ds being back. He has been up less than an hour and we have already argued about the fact he had to get up and the fact he has to get dressed. fucking teenagers Anyhow, if he has wrestled himself into close we are making raspberry and white chocolate cookies (all milk free natch) wish me luck I have to get him to try on uniform and get that later tonight too. SadHmm

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 31/08/2017 11:17

clothes not close

Afreshstartplease · 31/08/2017 11:43

Morning all

Ta da

Breakfast and tea pots done
Table and highchair cleaned post breakfast
One load dry
Two loads washed - one in dryer and one waiting
Fire and surround scrubbed
Dds bedroom quickly tidied

CotswoldStrife · 31/08/2017 12:03

Just spent a fair bit of time on the phone to the customer services of a company we deal with after receiving a crap email response to a query! I can't say it is sorted exactly but it's about the best we can do Sad The staff were pleasant but blamed it on 'systems' Angry I've raised the same point repeatedly but I suppose I know now that I have to pay first and query later Hmm Last year of it anyway, hopefully! (school related)

Bit of laundry done and planning a cinema trip this afternoon. Will attempt to simmer down from frustrating customer service experience with a film!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 31/08/2017 13:39

teenager has been slightly tamed by the cookies....

ta da
child up and dressed before lunch
raspberry and white chocolate cookies
folding
school uniform sizing checked
pencil case contents needed checked
Paint sheets in washer
Ikea list written

Am about to put bread for slicing loaf on and do the ironing mountain. Then I need to deal with the rest of the rbc stuff on the lounge floor

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 31/08/2017 15:32

Hello SC Smile. Welcome back newchick. At work now but hoping to do some uniform sorting later. Exciting times!

Cagliostro · 31/08/2017 15:40

Well I'm 9 items down on my list, yay! Have stalled a little while chatting with friends but pleased I have achieved stuff. Must get on with more of it. Here's my September Habits aims:

LAUNDRY - seriously need to get better at the one full wash load done and put away daily, as recommended by the great Flylady herself. Need to think about what the best time of day to start it is (e.g. Overnight so it can go in the dryer in the morning and we have more time to put it away...?)

MORNINGS - to continue cementing the Caglets in their Morning Lists, and getting them done at a decent hour. Want to get them waking up at a set, earlier time, and also... I really need to get dressed myself rather than hanging out in jammies all day if we are indoors Blush

EVENINGS - should be easier if melatonin continues to work! Need to start using the weekday meal plan as clubs start back, and gradually build up an evening list like their morning ones but with bath etc. Hopefully they can start getting to sleep earlier but it's going to be a slow process I reckon.

ORGANISATION - make sure we both use the diary as we had got a little out of the habit last term. Also use the weekly planner whiteboard and try and plan ahead for when we will need packed lunches etc.

EDUCATION - gradually adding in more structured stuff, both 'lessons' and computer things. Hopefully we can slowly build up a bit of a schedule that fits in around other stuff e.g. always doing science and English before my pupils arrive on Wednesday etc.

That's a totally achievable list for a heavily pregnant woman right? 😂😂😂

Haven't even included any decluttering (which really REALLY needs doing) as I no longer have any clue where to start with what's left.

Afreshstartplease · 31/08/2017 15:43

Ta da

Breakfast and tea pots done
Table and highchair cleaned post breakfast and lunch
Two loads dry
One load in washer, one in dryer, one on line
Fire and surround scrubbed
Dds bedroom quickly tidied
Taken delivery of multiple parcels
Swept hall and second living room
Sorted junk for tip
Paint away in cellar

Dds uniform all washed or in washer now. Tape tapes have been delivered. Any tips for keeping whites white? Have always ended up with greying polos before and would like them to last longer!

foxessocks · 31/08/2017 16:13

Welcome back SC!

I have just realised I've been flying for a year! This time last year I was hugely pregnant with ds and madly nesting ! Wish I could have some of that nesting energy now Hmm

Einstein those cookies sound lovely!

I've just shined my sink with a Flash magic eraser after seeing someone mention them on here...sorry I can't remember who it was but it was the floor ones which I couldn't find but I spotted a surface cleaner one for £1 in wilko so thought I'd try it, they are good!

foxessocks · 31/08/2017 16:17

cag cross post ...you've got the nesting energy!

Ta das
Daily routine
Got few bits from shop
Picked up parcel
Magic erasered my sink!

To do
Cook dinner
Living room
Ironing
Polish mirrors

I also really need to get back into some pilates DVDs as that hasn't happened for a seriously long time! Argh. Lack of motivation at the moment.

Cagliostro · 31/08/2017 16:48

Oh I don't know if I can call it nesting really, the list is mostly stuff I can do sitting on the sofa! I am trying to antiprocrastinate, you know that feeling where all those little admin tasks build up and become this massive Thing that's hanging over you? Or is that just me Blush?

Anyway I have done a little more so I'm going to post my list:

Pizza Express feedback thread on MN
Spend clubcard vouchers that expire today (opted for family RSPB membership!)
Book DD onto climbing club for next week
Pay for trampolining block
Email gym club and sort out payment
Put wash on
Put wash in dryer
All clothes put away (can't do until dryer is done!)
Write September habit plan
Collect all dirty laundry (pretty much done but need to check for lurking socks etc)
Write tidying plan for tomorrow (we have family round for game night and DH is off so hoping to achieve a fair bit in the living room before they arrive)
Reply to PMs (done FB but not MN - I get stupidly anxious sometimes and ignore messages!)
Phone charity furniture shop about fridges (tried twice so far)
Order new laptop/case (shouldn't be a big deal as I we have pretty much chosen)
Decide food for game night (text sent to DH to buy bits at work that we don't have)
Fill in tae kwon do forms for DS
Read (it's a heavyish non fiction so I need to push myself to read IYSWIM)
Plot weather graph with Caglets
Set up group chat to organise one of the clubs DH teaches
Text DD's friend's mum (need to arrange something and I am shy)
Catch up on Hoarders support thread
Think about 'everyday drawer' plan (we had one of these when DCs were at school - hair stuff etc so it didn't get lost - but not sure where best to keep it)
Try to transfer money to ISA (didn't work but thanks to Frugaleer thread I now know how to sort it in branch)
Plan when to visit mum
Science with the Caglets

Sandycarrots · 31/08/2017 17:27

Hi all, just diving in quickly to say that ...

... the new September Flylady thread is here!

Toostressy, I think you will all agree, deserves several cases of Gin, many Halo , a shed load of Star and a huge thank you for guiding the thread through July and August; from home, from work, from her parents-in-law's house, when travelling, and from a holiday cottage, which is what you might call, above and beyond the call of duty!! Flowers Flowers Flowers and humungous thanks and more Flowers

Bit hectic here as school starts tomorrow but will bbl to catch up!
Cheery wing flaps to all!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 31/08/2017 18:07

cag advice from fire service is to not run overnight (or when out) because washing machines and tumbler dryers are in the high risk of catching fire during use category.

Didn't get the ironing or the brc stuff done but did pair and fold the sock pile of doom and help ds make clay model. Before he disappeared for a dvd marathon and I attempted to take a nap with him sticking his head in every 20 mins Hmm Not much nap had but hot water bottle has calmed the shivers and feeling well enough to drag the grumpy one out for ikea and shoe shopping. He is very unimpressed Wink but it has to be done and it ticks off a number of things from the list. thank fuck

Cagliostro · 31/08/2017 18:29

Ah thank you I knew that about tumble dryers but (oddly) not washing machines! Hmmm possibly wash on in evening then, so it's finished before bed and ready to start dryer first thing? Basically I don't want the putting away bit to happen too late because we are so often out in the afternoons and I totally envisage it Not Happening when we are too tired.

Still plodding on with the list. Got to do dinner now as well.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 31/08/2017 18:41

I generally try to time it that I put clothes away in the morning when I am getting up and in the drawers for clothes. For me it works well but I don't have to consider small children or pets who might screw up anything folded the night before.

My lungs hurt today, as does my back Hmm still got to go out and do errands as I refuse to head into major shopping areas during the day and will happily take advantage of the late night opening to avoid people. Need to construct a new to do list and check over ds' one that I wrote last night as we can cross stuff off it. Grin

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 31/08/2017 18:42

Meant to say sounds good but you might want to leave the washer door open to prevent damp smell in the clothes. it creeps in so quickly Hmm
