First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

Morning all :)

I am very sleepy. Determined not to waste the day though - not expecting a lot of myself, but equally don't want to end up doing nothing. Mainly because we got into a really good home ed/housework routine with the DCs, and I don't want to let that slide.

Especially because DD did that exaggerated sigh thing when I dared to mention the home ed stuff - she's fine (enthusiastic generally) when we actually do it, she just likes to moan about it. I said, "Don't be rude, would you have done that to your teacher at school when she asked you to do some work?" and she said, "Well maybe I should have, she didn't do anything to help me when [bully] was hurting me." :( Poor thing. I'm so glad she's out of there.

Anyway. Nearly 9 so best get on.

Fizrim · 04/03/2016 09:43

Morning all. Fuzz must be quite a time of mixed emotions for you - no-one wants a job that is causing them physical distress, but you'd much rather choose the time of your own departure/job swap and not have it brought upon you. I expect your emotions will be up and down over the next few days.

My head is still aching a bit, but lots better. I hardly ever get migraines this bad nowadays, so just avoiding coffee/chocolate/wine for a few more days should sort it Sad

Not sure I've done any zone work this week, hung one spring decoration on the mirror! Will crack on and be back at lunchtime (one good thing about the headaches is that I stay away from the laptop as it makes them worse!).

fuzzpig · 04/03/2016 11:34

Yes that's it really, it would be different if I had a job that I didn't enjoy (like DH!) but it is really fun.

Have only done a little home ed this morning as it's really sunny so I've shoved the DCs outside to make the most of it! DS is trying DD's rollerblades (we're thinking of getting him some for his birthday) and according to their happy shouts he's doing well, I haven't actually been to look yet as I'm still in my jammies nobody needs to see me without a bra on they'll be scarred for life Blush

I've put a few random bits away and restored a backup hard drive from an old computer (not our previous one which I stupidly didn't back up before it died - need to figure that one out) as DSD asked for some old photos. Also need to proof read DSS' dissertation at some point! Confused AND FINISH THE DAMN BOOK!

Hope you continue recovering Fiz I've only had one migraine and would not wish that on anyone! DD used to get them through stress (exactly the same as DH used to get) but hasn't had any since leaving school thankfully.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 04/03/2016 11:42

We have had enough snow overnight and this morning to cause utter chaos.

Ta da
rearrange travel plans
find and fill thermos flasks
pack emergency food
find snow chains
check tires and fluids
find thermal base layers
deal with panicky ds
find fault with phone line and report
wonder where the camera is so can show a pretty snow picture to you all Hmm
soak grill pans from last night's sauage, mash and oninon gravy
make shopping list
put a load of washing on
pack ds' stuff for weekend
arrange for allergy friendly food's list to be sent
sort out easter presents for multiple people (discussions as to suitable none chocolate ideas only)
realise not written an important letter that needed to be sent today (argh....)
print pictures for above letter
start stripping my bed for washing bedding later
turn on the turn fruit into smoothies so it all disappears before going off Grin

Right still got a bit more to do before leaving in half hour. Catch up with you all tonight.

fuzzpig · 04/03/2016 12:01

Crikey that's one heck of a list! Star

All I've done is washing and a tiny bit of tidying and home ed, but DCs are in now from their skating so on with the next bit (phonics for DS, poetry for DD, maths fact families for both!) and then a little tidying before lunch I hope.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 04/03/2016 12:18

I am quite pleased with myself as I was still asleep at 10:30am! Shock

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 04/03/2016 12:19

Not a great picture as there are still camera issues (and i was not actually going outside to take the picture)

Fizrim · 04/03/2016 12:19

I'm on laundry duty again today. Recklessly hung a load outside (first of the year) but the snow has just started despite it being a bright and sunny day. I don't think there is enough to stick but I'll do my shopping before picking DD up just in case!

Need to crack on with the tidying really. Sorted tea for tonight, just need to decide on my lunch, may just have a quick sandwich and get off mumsnet

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 04/03/2016 12:22

Grin Good luck with that not sticking snow thing Fizrim Grin

BlueEyeshadow · 04/03/2016 13:58

Crazy weather! It's gorgeous sunshine here today, so I'm going to go out and enjoy it, just for a walk, and because I can.

Sorry to hear about all the stresses and strains.

Brew Cake Flowers for all in need.

Slimmingcrackers · 04/03/2016 14:52

[Waves from prone position] Went to physio yesterday - felt great - then did too much. Paying for it today but starting to feel a bit better again now.

Brew in return for Blue with spring flowers Thanks

Shock at the dpeth of that snow Einstein hope you will be OK driving

So sorry to hear about the job Fuzz

Hope migraine is still receding Fiz wine, oranges and coffee are my triggers but must be some particular type or combination because occasionally partake (separately) and they don't always cause a reaction. Confusing.

Hope your dd's tooth pain has gone away too!

Shannara ouch at painful knee and back combo! I daren't look at organising vids Blush

Thanks for links Grey and as for dog-rabbit amnesty; let's just say I am not pinning my hopes on it ... he gets "the look" and all sense goes out the window Grin and nose and instinct take over!

Plan is (if can get comfortable position in car and dd can be cajoled in to joining us) off to N. France tonight.

Big waves to everyone else and wishing you all as restful a weekend as poss!

Greymalkin · 04/03/2016 18:49

Attempted some DIY (was a disaster wishes GreyTowers was close to Dogsbum)

Once on main roads it was less scary but getting to them was a bit hair raising. I think the council were caught off guards a bit because they are usually reasonably good at keeping the roads gritted.

I have managed to hot spot my car. It still needs a damn good hoover but not with the snow falling as fast and as heavy as it was.

Any hows dishwasher is on and I am off out in half out so shower, change of clothes and tea.

Have fabulous weekends

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 04/03/2016 18:56

*out in half an hour.

Greymalkin · 04/03/2016 19:25

Have fun Einstein (my car is ankle deep in sweet wrappers, parking tickets and dry cereal crumbs Blush most of which I can blame on DS)

Forgot a Ta da

It was only a brief flurry of snow and didn't stick - honest! We have really escaped it, our relatives in the north-west have been hit hard though.

Done more laundry (yawn, boring myself now) and cooked the tea but not cleared up after it properly

New music book ordered for DD has arrived. She then claimed she didn't need it, but the note in her book says she does!

I think another early night is in store for me. The excitement never starts here ...

fuzzpig · 04/03/2016 21:24

S'ok Fiz I'm spending the evening proofreading DSCs' coursework and making home ed quizzes for the DCs! Rock 'n' roll life here! :o

Dancing is off tomorrow, not sure why but quite glad of another day at home. Will probably have the neighbour DC running in and out but that'll be it.

Managed to put a few more things in their rightful homes. Going to carry on with editing now and then have to clear the bed later (it's gone a bit 'worse before it gets better' up there). And must put washing in the dryer.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 04/03/2016 21:49

Shower and change of clothes was too much effort so I sorted a hot water bottle and crawled into bed around 7pm Blush Finished the craft project that I was working on this week. I currently working on another one. And yes it is not the birthday present I should be working on Hmm

fuzzpig · 04/03/2016 22:20

There's nothing like having an essential task to make you get all sorts of OTHER things done is there :o

Right I've done 30mins work, got to stick the dryer on and clear the bed.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 05/03/2016 05:10

Why do i suck so badly at baby step 17? Some of you will be almost up for the day and I have not even been to sleep yet Hmm

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 05/03/2016 07:14

Me too Einstein, although I am sitting on a train to London as I type, being out and about this early isn't in my nature (was in A&E 10 miles from home at this time yesterday too, false alarm luckily).

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 05/03/2016 07:15
fuzzpig · 05/03/2016 09:38

Oh no Who that must've been stressful yesterday! Glad it was a false alarm though.

Einstein I hope you've dozed off now! I sometimes only sleep because of amitriptyline.

Ah, Saturday. Quiet day in thanks to lack of dance club. Took me a long time to get up this morning, so I sat up and grabbed what I could to sort through (yes, our room is still so bad that everything is piled up high all over the floor...). Will do some more later. In quite a positive phase at the moment, I'm proud of myself that I'm managing to do little bits and pieces of tidying, rather than getting all rabbit-in-headlights which is my usual style.

Also need to get DCs to put their clothes away (yes, ours are still all over the place, we never lapse on the DCs' clothes though!), dig out a DVD and put it in a case for a friend who's borrowing it, DD has 2 lots of homework (Brownies and writing club). Need to order Tesco as well, I think as it's the last week of DH working (eeek) I'll make it another lazy week food-wise. More editing to do and reading DSS' dissertation too. And still need to decide if we're staying at Mum's in the next week or so.

Hope everyone has a lovely Saturday. Chocolate

Greymalkin · 05/03/2016 10:55

Morning (evening Einstein?!) all

DH got up with DS this morning so I got to catch up on some much needed shut eye.

We were thinking of going to a local nature reserve this morning, but the weather is grotty, so might have to think if a plan B.
