First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

4.30, ouch :(

I'm very impressed with all you Fledglings who have been productive on such little sleep! Star

DCs are just doing another box full of easily-tidyable stuff.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 07/03/2016 14:50

I have just discovered that the 2nd smoothie bottle that I opened in the kitchen has exploded smoothie bits all over the ceiling, walls and window. Don't have the energy to deal with it today. :(

Curled up in bed with a hot water bottle finishing off bits and bobs of craft projects that just needed ends weaving, poppers applying etc etc Hoping to get some of the errands run in a bit. Just building up the energy by eating sweeties Blush

Ratbagcatbag · 07/03/2016 15:05

Sliding in to say hello. I'm not sure if I'll be allowed as I have a cleaner for the general stuff. I just feel overwhelmed with "stuff" I had a good January with taking bags and bags to the charity shop, but I've failed again and now I am just feeling that there is too much. :(

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 07/03/2016 16:48

Ratbag - it's fine, there are several people here with cleaners, the clutter and organisation side of things is just as important in the Flylady system as the actual cleaning.

SC - hmm, well, it varies. Mostly I just ask them over and over again till it's done. Eventually the habits do seem to embed themselves. If we have overslept I do let them off, or if someone is feeling a bit under the weather, equally I expect them to do a bit more of one of us is under the weather. WE are generally OK homework wise, but extra curricular stuff does get in the way. I would add that no single job they are asked to do should take more than 5 mins (empty DW, wash cat bowls, empty recycling, tidy shoe rack, change hand towels, stuff like that).

fuzzpig · 07/03/2016 18:17

Good to read about how other families get their DCs involved with chores. All mine do regularly is putting their own clean clothes away. We've got them involved in other bits like loading the washing machine etc but they don't have chores etc yet (they are 8 and 6). Obviously they've been helping with the big tidy/declutter but I hope that once that's done we can start a proper routine.

Welcome rat :) I don't really do the routine stuff either on here, major sympathies on the clutter, that's our biggest challenge!

fuzzpig · 07/03/2016 18:19

On another note can somebody please give me a kick? I have loads of stuff I should be doing, oddly it's computer stuff that I'm procrastinating over and I am actually feeling like I'd rather tidy. I mean WHAT THE ACTUAL JEFF. I think I must have been abducted by aliens or something. Hmm

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 07/03/2016 18:39

do 15mins tidying and then 15mins computer. might suck you into the computer stuff doing a little tidying and then actually starting. Starting is the hardest part!

fuzzpig · 07/03/2016 18:58

Ooh good plan that! Thanks :) seems manageable.

Dryer is on, I need to go on a uniform hunt for the washer and I'll move some stuff from the bed (only a bit as I can't manage multiple trips up and down stairs), must find a lingering WBD token, and then yes I will SIT DOWN AND WORK.

fuzzpig · 07/03/2016 19:55

Right. A few things put in their rightful places, uniform wash is on, then I did half an hour's work on the computer. Just going to have a snack break and then will carry on - should be able to get another half hour done before the others get home.

Fizrim · 07/03/2016 22:28

Have still not done any ironing or washed the dancewear but it's not needed until Wednesday so I'll move that to tomorrow's list. A more productive day for me for once.

Will try not to stay up too late tonight reading t'internet. G'night all!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 07/03/2016 22:44

Well another mixed day today. Accidentally woke up an hour early having not resetvthd alarm clock from Saturday but managed to doze back off. Then got stuck in the traffic jam from hell going to work, took an hour longer tgan usual (normally about 20 mins).

However I was quite productive at work and finished off a few jobs that have been hanging around for a while. Was also efficient once back at home (finished work at 2.30).

Tada!

Washed car
Made sure DCs did new chores
Shopping
Washing
Fridge sorted out
Bill paid
Subscription cancelled
Craft project finished
Ballet class
New bookcase filled from contents of old child storage unit
Bags/clothes sorted for tomorrow - school/mufti day/ballet/swimming.

fuzzpig · 07/03/2016 22:58

child storage unit now I have the image of children sitting on shelves :o

Got 2x 30mins done in the end but somehow wasted DH's entire ironing session pissing about online. Fail. Although did follow up a possible lead for a new pupil so that's something productive. Still quite awake so going to do some more work now.

The next baby step is to start building your Control Journal

Habit of the month is getting dressed to your shoes. A tad controversial on here, some do, some don’t… (I certainly don't)

Good morning all - I was up at 4:30 again with DS (I'm considering snorting lines of ground coffee beans, I'm that shattered)

Welcome Rat - jump in! I have a weekly cleaner too - thank heavens - but as others have said, a cleaner can't organise and run your home, you still need to do that and Flylady can help.

I will be dropping DS off at nursery this morning then I'm planning a serious declutter of my kitchen cupboards: mostly utensils, mismatched crockery, oven dishes and unused gadgets.

Back later....

fuzzpig · 08/03/2016 08:56

Good morning. I am flipping knackered although I feel embarrassed saying that as my early morning was... 7.30! Blush I'd got used to sleeping a bit later but now the days are getting shorter again so the DCs are getting up earlier.

They are very stroppy this morning too. Sigh. Got lots to do today.

Slimmingcrackers · 08/03/2016 10:10

Morning all! Another knackered one here joining the assembled ranks. It was hard to get out of bed at 5.40 am this morning [urgh] (school run is earlier than ever as traffic tunnels close to us have closed for maintenance involving long detour by car or trip by metro or even longer walk), having woken at 3.30 am with mahoosive headache although thankfully that has cleared now.

Sorry to hear you are both sleep deprived too Grey and Fuzz.

Good luck with kitchen decluttering ¨Grey

Mahoosive gym kit fail today too (partly dd's fault for not bringing the correct kit home and so it wasn't done at the w/e with the rest of the school stuff, and partly mine for forgetting to take it out of the wm last night Blush) Oh dear. She went in this morning with a non-uniform white t-shirt saying "I am going to be killed" and me saying "I'm sure it won't be quite as bad as that". Grin

And mahoosive home bleugh fail yesterday for the ridiculous reason that it was hideously boring and I ran out of willpower Blush and did loads of on-line shopping admin instead, leaving me all the more to do today Blush.

On the positive side: back hugely better although being careful.

Whoknows thanks for the tips about dc and chores. Especially about keeping the chores do-able within 5 mins. We are marvellous here about drawing up charts and new contracts, and useless at following them through. But dh and I have decided to be a little more proactive with limiting the Ipod and laptop use on weekend mornings (she has a two hour limit per day on Sats and Suns) and with insisting on family chore time.

We already do family bed-making on a Sat (essential with bad back and a house with so many stairs etc) but we are going to extend it to two half hours of full-on activity for all of us. DD does keep her bedroom reasonably tidy and puts her own clean and ironed clothes away. I have nearly got dd to the point where she washes her own school uniform and is responsible for hanging it up too (with reminders and help). But still can't get her to keep the dog's water bowl clean and full on a daily basis; which literally takes 3 mins per day ie pick it up, swap it for clean one, run tap and fill! Must keep trying though!

Welcome Ratbag I have a cleaner too who hasn't shown up for the past three weeks and, I am ashamed to say, someone who comes to do the ironing fortnightly. But my house is v. large and cleaning it is v. physically demanding ie combo of lots of falling plaster and dust and leaks and lots and lots of stairs and it requires lots of hefting of industrial hoovers and equipment about and climbing of ladders etc. Overwhelmed with "stuff" here too in some rooms, so you are not alone!

Hope everyone has a good day!

Fizrim · 08/03/2016 10:13

Good morning all. I've had my first coffee for a week (darn that headache) so I'm hoping it doesn't trigger the head to get any worse!

Today I aim to do a bit more detail cleaning of the lounge/diner and kitchen, but also need to work on the bedrooms. We have some furniture being delivered in a couple of weeks and it will need to be stored in the spare room before it is put up in the master bedroom. My usual panic bedroom tidy is to throw everything into the spare room, but that's not gonna work this time! Aiming to declutter a bit of clothing at the same time too.

Has anyone ever tried those weigh-in places for old clothes?

Will close the laptop down until lunchtime now, resist the temptation to read on ....

Slimmingcrackers · 08/03/2016 10:49

Waves to Fiz Good luck with ground floor tidying.

Oh yes, forgot to mention the other reason why I didn't get as much done yesterday as planned. Was with dd from 4pm until 10pm doing hwk with only a 30 min break for supper Shock. (Dh away on business currently.) She had got herself in to a bit of a Pickle with Latin, but other than that, just had loads to do (she did less than normal at the weekend because we were away for half of it and up very late on Sat). And as we were on a bit of a roll, we got ahead with maths due in on Thurs. And she then gave me her daily 20 min French lesson (which I have instigated in a crafty attempt to get her to do more French Wink) but it has in fact ended up as a "win win "because it is genuinely helping me too.

And breathe.

Following Fizrims good example and switching off screen now too! Time for some chores ... .

Hope everyone has a good week!

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 08/03/2016 15:21

Just looks odd with the extra spaces.

Greymalkin · 08/03/2016 16:04

Glad your back is feeling better SC, hope it stays that way.

Fiz our spare room is the dumping ground of doom as well Blush We also have new sofas coming in a couple of months so we need to get organised too.

Seems to be working Einstein [I think]

Greymalkin · 08/03/2016 16:22

Ok, so I have:

Had a mega declutter of five big kitchen cupboards
Once cupboards were emptied, all were thoroughly cleaned, dried and restocked with the items that are staying
New space in cupboards meant lots of the things on the worktops can now live in the cupboards
Chucked some dodgy appliances
Two big crates of unwanted stuff filled and taken to the charity shop
Good stuff put aside to eBay
Chucked a spice rack in which every spice tasted like dust!

And outside of Zone 2 I have:

Taken DS to nursery
Fed cats
Made the beds
Washed our dressing gowns and hung up to dry
Dishwasher on
Ruthless chucking of hoards of paper on the dining room table
Spoken to DS's new nursery about start dates and induction
Finished the purge of my desk

Still to do:

Cross check calendar and diary
Deal with cat litter trays
Put bins out for collection tomorrow
Pick up DS
Finish my reading book
