First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

I rather like the idea of a hovering session. [wingardium leviosa] :o Much more fun than hoovering.

Not a chance of Flying today. Quick tidy of living room for pupil at 7.30 but that's it.

Slimmingcrackers · 31/03/2016 09:39

What ho fledglings!

Hope everyone ok! (And those who are ailing, including dc, are on their way to recovery!)

Hope you are catching up on shut eye Einstein. And thank you very much for offering to cover the first few days of the new thread (which I will set up today). Don't worry - I will be back by evening of 5th.

Welcome back Knitting! Sounds as if your trip away has been v restorative! (Restorative for the damp cottage too, thanks to your efforts!)

And thank you again everyone for validation re: the boundaries/routines etc with regard to dd. I know that it is better to stick to the rules and be consistent but I doubt myself all the time re: this parenting lark! And dd is so laid back with her and the furry one that I sometimes think it pushes me to the other extreme ifyswim. At one point last week I was v worried because it seemed as if almost all of the interactions between dd and me were negative. But thankfully that has almost totally reversed itself now we are on holiday and things are less stressful!

Knitting I winced a bit when I read about Easter eggs and sharing Smile. I am your dh I think! Grin I am always insisting on sharing because dd is an "only" and want her to turn in to a generous 'only' and not a spoilt one! But now I think I probably have over-done that too Blush

However, I am happy to report that she was a great help yesterday and behaved beautifully with the guests and a good time was had by all it was just the furry one who seriously disgraced himself .

Caglio congrats on tackling under-stair cupboard of doom!

And good work with the feather-duster wielding ¨Needastrongone!

Sorry to hear your dd is still suffering Cotswold! I hope she feels better tonight! Congrats on getting the laundry done despite nursing duties!

Hope furniture assemblage continuing well Fizrim

Celeste hope everyone in your household is feeling a bit better too!

Big waves to Ellie Feetheart Nicknacks PA Blue Honu WhoKnows,Dogsbum, Toffee, Midlife, WoodenSpoon Shannara and everyone I've missed!

Flying-wise, the downstairs is looking unusually "visitor tidy". Second floor is as passable as it ever gets as I changed all the beds yesterday and dusted and hoovered. First floor is a bomb site (except for the bathroom which I cleaned yesterday)!

One day to turn it around and then we are away for a bit. I'm annoyed with dh again though who, in typical style, has invited "a few friends/contacts of his" around to lunch on Sat where we are going, because of course just having a holiday with ourselves and dsil is not enough is it? He has also added a complicated extra trip to a third country to the schedule. So a merry jaunt has turned in to a bit of a logistical nightmare and I am stressing about menus and timings and packing etc. He just can't help himself sadly ... .grrrrrr.

First though, dd and I are going to make some blueberry pancakes with some fruit we have left over from yesterday ... .

Then I have to do a mound of washing and packing.

(Can't believe that was your last lot of links Grey! Thank you very much for them! March raced by didn't it? Shock Yikes, can anyone else believe it is April tomorrow? Seriously need to sort boudoir and home office thoroughly and permanently upon our return.)

celeste83 · 31/03/2016 09:53

Morning.

I didn't do much again yesterday as i was still not on best form so only the basics done. Housework is seriously lugging behind now. I feel much better today however after a good nights sleep not up coughing all night! I need to be getting the bleach and dettol out and start zapping these germs but its a lovely day here so i feel compelled to get ds out and get some fresh air in our lungs so we are going to make a packed lunch and get on the train and go down the seaside. Will try and get a few bits done before and then maybe do some more this evening.

Bathrooms and kitchen are a priority over the lounge at the moment however although the place could do with a hoover like the mission suggested. I'll put it on my list. Hopefully get it down some point before the weekend.

Cagliostro · 31/03/2016 09:58

We only started the cupboard, nowhere near done yet! Blush

We're off to the DCs' rock climbing club today, meeting another HE family who are coming back to ours after. We're really close so don't need a panic tidy :o

I should probably get out of bed though

SpareCrust · 31/03/2016 11:10

Glad you are feeling better Celeste and a trip to the seaside sounds like just what the doctor ordered!

Ah Caglio the verb "to tackle" is very broad and inclusive in my book and covers varying degrees of thoroughness Wink Grin Good luck with the rest of it!

Error from below: meant dh so laid back with dd

April thread here!.

(with name change)

[Will post first set of links before I leave and will be back by 5th!]

A big Halo and lots of Thanks Cake Biscuit Chocolate and Wine to Greymalkin for leading us so splendidly through March! It is hugely appreciated!

CotswoldStrife · 31/03/2016 13:24

Thanks for March Grey, fabulous work there.

Have still not gone shopping. Few more loads of laundry done.

Have a fab trip Spare, I would find that stressful too. Get well soon Celeste.

April already. Where is the year going? nowhere fast here

SpareCrust · 31/03/2016 15:22

Thanks all (and thanks again Einstein!) See you all next week!

Tally-hoooooooooooooo!

knittingwithnettles · 31/03/2016 15:25

I've cricked my neck on a long walk (scrambling up a hill) a few days ago, and it is really annoying me now Angry

made a long list of things to do in the garden but I don't think I can do anything that involves bending down and lugging things so that is out. I keep finding I am bent double like a tortoise and have to keep stretching my neck out very delibarately to correct. Fear I need to track down a physio.

done
lunch
swept floor
dw
worktops
wash on

celeste83 · 31/03/2016 15:40

So are we posting on this thread or the new thread? Confused

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 31/03/2016 16:13

We post on this thread until tomo Celeste most of the posts are place marking type posts. Links are up for tomo now because SC posted them before she left. Transition can be a bit messy sometimes. But most people will check this thread until end of tomo, whilst transisitioning.

Remove baby stuff for getting rid of.

Just taking a coffee break before going back into the office. The middle of the room is just plain dangerous atm, and that is before the hazadous levels of dust. You can taste the air ShockSad

celeste83 · 31/03/2016 16:21

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 31/03/2016 19:05

Half the middle of the room done, Christmas stuff returned unsorted, 3 boxes of stuff transferred to the study for another day. Just waiting to put the 2nd load of washing on before pouring myself into the bath. Office and my room are just airing so the dust level gets less stupid. Early night will be needed that was hard work

knittingwithnettles · 31/03/2016 19:39

done
taken kids swimming and slightly decricked my neck by sitting in a hot jacuzzi at swimming pool, feel slightly better but very tired now
emailed solicitor
dh has hung the washing out and piled up some dry stuff!
ds1 went to a revision class today and said he did his English Language mock GSCE - easy he said (which means he didn't write enough Sad) It seems to be impossible to get any information out of him.

I managed to throw away some books before I went on Easter Break and get them past the thought police (dh). Today I spirited away a nightie which didn;t suit me...shall now set myself the task of decluttering some more stuff from my bedroom, like clothes which I am thoroughly sick of, but are "serviceable". Spring clearouts are very therapeutic.

knittingwithnettles · 05/04/2016 17:54

done
dh and I did loads of gardening, and yesterday too. My cricked neck has much improved, even before I saw physio, although that was bliss (didn't know physios did such wonderful massage)
My lower back seems to be holding out too, the more I lift things I think the stronger it gets, if I just hold my stomach in Grin
saw friend for coffee
ds2 went off to see a friend and play football. Unfortunately he wearing ds1's school trousers Confused so when he returned they were literally falling down Shockbut he didn't seem to care. An ironed pair of trousers for footie - what a waste Wink

cooked macaroni cheese
cooked pancakes for afternoon snack

Dh has ordered a taxidermist's Himalyan Mountain Goat for his business Shock I won't say more, except that it is 100 years old. It has been banished to the shed, dh says it is a disappointment (for obscure bookselling reasons) but he has been cheered up by vigorous gardening and continuing to plant himalalyan plants like rhododendrons and azaleas.

dd is in a good mood Smile Ds1 is still lurking, after an exam at school this morning, he seems extremely cheerful but is still in revision denial.

knittingwithnettles · 05/04/2016 17:55
