First of all, a big thank you to Fuzzpig Flowers for leading us through the February thread, (you can hung up your duster for a bit now!)

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chat along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around next month again!

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with her marketing and testimonial nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the babysteps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names!) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a Brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

That is a genius costume! Golden ticket! I'm writing that one down for next year.

There were a lot of Gangster Grannies last year. Harry Potter is always popular (stick a cloak on school uniform for Harry/Hermione) and the usual selection of supermarket costumes. Bah humbug for a theme, that makes it so much more difficult. Ours are supposed to dress as their favourite character she's never read the book and the infants are asked to take a copy of the book with them!

fuzzpig · 02/03/2016 00:28

Do you mind saying what the theme is Einstein?

Links for Wednesday 2nd March

We remain in Zone 1 the Entrance, Front Porch and Dining Room

Today’s mission is to set your timer for 15 minutes and clear off your dining table

Our second baby step is to get dressed to shoes and put some war paint on

Habit of the month is getting dressed to your shoes. A tad controversial on here, some do, some don’t… (I certainly don't)

Wednesday is anti-procrastination day - pick a task you have been putting off, roll your sleeves up and JFDI (just f*^@ing do it!!)

Mornin' Grey :)

Feeling sleepy this morning but pleased because we got a lot done yesterday. The boudoir doesn't actually look any different (yes it was THAT BAD to start with) but I know we did a lot. Today's focus must be the living room though as I have a pupil tonight.

Didn't actually do the mission or daily focus yesterday Blush

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 02/03/2016 10:51

Good Morning.

We have Snow and it is falling from the sky with intent atm. The only saving grace is that the ground is a bit too warm for it to stick. But if it keeps up falling at this rate with the way the temp is going it is entirely possible that it will stick by the end of the day!

ta da
send tip run stuff to tip with dmum who was going in that direction Flowers
muttered, mumbled about state of house
Rung school again as ds is still off
picked up knitting but not the birthday present BlushHmm

to do
stop procrastinating
empty the bins
get on with the birthday present

Thankfully am feeling a bit better today having slept so much yesterday. So keeping fingers crossed it is all just burn out from having fun.

BlueEyeshadow · 02/03/2016 12:17

Boo to the theme, Einstein! Seen some interesting looking weather on a friend's FB which must be somewhere in your neck of the woods.

Just slightly sleety rain here.

Feels like quite a successful morning, but all took longer than planned.

Ta da!
Scoured charity shops for DS1's WBD outfit - just plain coloured long-sleeve top, why so hard to find?!
Laundry
Work
Got distracted by the wool shop
Bought wool. Oops.

Trying to decide between 2 fantastic-sounding but expensive CPD events in the summer holidays. One is for my weaker language so might be very beneficial, and won't be available in this country again for several years. The other is something I've wanted to do for over a decade (!!) and we are finally around over the relevant dates. I wish I could just do both. Agh, decisions!

fuzzpig · 02/03/2016 12:21

Pretty certain the living room looks worse now. We have put stuff away though, from the boxes/bags that were previously stuffed during a panic tidy.

So now we have more space for today's panic tidy :o Blush

I will be much more careful during said PT though - if I see something that does have a home I WILL tell the DCs to put it in the right place.

DD seems a bit under the weather, so with that and the actual weather (not snow but horrid rain) I'm glad I didn't tell them about the adventure playground meet up today - we're having a quiet day at home instead. Hopefully she will be ok for Brownies.

fuzzpig · 02/03/2016 12:25

Ooh tricky decision Blue [confusion] is it expense that means you can't do both, or time, or do they clash?

I think my head would say the one in your weaker language as it'd improve your work (am I right in thinking you are a translator?) especially as it's also not going to be around in future years. But I can see why you're in a dilemma as 10 years is an awfully long time to wait for a course you want to do! If that one is annual or thereabouts, is there not a chance that it'll come up again at the right time next year? :)

fuzzpig · 02/03/2016 15:06

Aaargh flagging! Someone kick me off the sofa pleeeease!

Slimmingcrackers · 02/03/2016 15:28

Well, we are experiencing every type of weather under the sun here today .. wind... bright sunshine... sleet... rain... and sunshine again ... and rain again... . Of course the minute one of us takes the dog out the heavens open.

I am in middle of humungous cooking session (for friend who is poorly) and for office and for us. Hoping the back holds up as spent the morning on my feet at parish vestiare, sorting donated clothes [groan].

A warm welcome to Mama!

Einstein Oh I hated it when they had a theme! Really limits the imagination!

[Proffers Fuzzpig extra cushion - [sorry] ] Well done on making such a a good start on the boudoir.

Blue could you possibly live on baked beans and lentils for six months (!) and go for both? If they come around so rarely, it seems like a good investment to me. Or is it more a logistical issue? Could you get a grant/or a client to sponsor you/or a career development loan (if any of these things exist any more?).

Fizrim like the sound of the swanky new make up!

Crikey Greymalkin you certainly started the month with some killer lists! Glad your ds is letting you lie in a little. And thank you for links; really determined to Fly 'properly' this month, so following them closely.

Had better get back to my chewy oat and raisin cookies and resist eating any and my pork and veg marinade thingy.

Slimmingcrackers · 02/03/2016 15:30

Forgot to say Einstein glad you are feeling a little better today Thanks

BlueEyeshadow · 02/03/2016 19:11

Thanks, SC and fuzz. Am currently veering towards the former option. Yes, it's cost that prevents doing both - that and childcare logistics. The 2nd one is on every year, but not always in my languages, and we've often been away for the relevant dates.

Oh and thanks, Fiz - can't take credit for the costume idea though: I found it on a MN thread!

We have also had all kinds of weather today - it did actually turn to snow briefly this afternoon!

Greymalkin · 02/03/2016 19:21

Hello everyone and welcome to Mama, jump right in.

I am so relieved tomorrow is a non-nursery day for DS, no WBD malarky for this year. Have you got anything sorted yet Einstein?

Fizrim - I gave my clothes and DS's the Kondo treatment a year ago and I would thoroughly recommend it. I don't regret chucking anything, haven't missed anything and only wear the things I love. Plus I can see everything I have at a glance thanks to the vertical folding.

As others have said Blue, is doing both courses possible? It sounds like a good investment as SC says

Don't worry Fuzz - I haven't done anything in the weeks focus zone either Blush

SC hows that back?

I had a busy, busy day....:
Fed cats and DS
Put bins out
Took DS to nursery
Made beds
Finished descaling the kettle
Went to my weekly therapy appointment
Emptied, washed and refilled cat litter trays
Emptied dishwasher
Hand washing up
Washed more bedding and towels
Hoovered living room
Finished my reading book
Fed cats
Picked up DS

Anti-procrastination task completed: For months now our bookshelves have been a dumping ground for all kinds of crap and the dust was so thick I could write in it Blush So I put on an audiobook and took everything off all three floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, dusted every book and dvd, cleaned all the shelves and replaced the books etc.
However... all the ornaments have been dumped on my dining table (oops, ruined the mission then!). DH and I will sort them tonight.

Back later with links.

I had a terrible migraine today - don't often get them that bad - and actually gave up and went back to bed for a bit, so minimal stuff done here today. Will head back to bed soon and it will hopefully be a lot better tomorrow.

I didn't see any snow perhaps because I was asleep so we seem to have skipped the worst of the storm unlike Blue, that looks bad! DD is so disappointed there has been no snow here this year!

mamamermaid · 02/03/2016 22:44

Thank you, I have been reading but seriously bleach my sink daily?!! I'm not mental enough Confused

Slimmingcrackers · 02/03/2016 22:56

Evening all... on my way to bed... back is totally crumped, but thanks for asking Greymalkin Smile. Desperate to return to normality as it is getting really tedious now. Boy how one takes a functioning back for granted. Certainly will not be making that mistake again. All household tasks seem to involve bending down! Even labour saving devices such as hoovers, dw and wms involve stooping!

Wow you are on a roll Grey congrats on your extremely productive day. The bookshelf clearance sounds amazing! (But mind your back too!!)

Love the daffodils in the snow Blue!

Sorry to hear about the migraine Fiz they are hideous. Hope it clears soon.

Big waves to everyone else!

I volunteered and cooked for the entire day today, and did three loads of washing. So much for trying to Fly seriously. Never mind, hope to catch up tomorrow.

Furry one is in disgrace as he keeps trying to stalk the rabs.

Generally mood quite chipper here though as dd has become, over the past four to five weeks, really, really happy at school! Phew! Can't tell you how relieved I am! Simply cannot believe the contrast between the child who found it so hard starting secondary in Sept (and who was withdrawn, stressed, sullen, cranky and just plain unhappy right up until Christmas and beyond) and the confident, smiley, bouncy, relaxed child who is now saying "I hope they don't alter the composition of our class groups too much next year, as I will never, ever, get a better set of girls to be with" Shock Smile Long may it continue!

When your child is happy, nowt else really matters does it? Smile

G'night all!

Slimmingcrackers · 02/03/2016 22:58

Mama indeed, just adapt the system to suit yourself. The Fat Fairy can be a little, er, barking eccentric, but I promise you the underlying system is sound.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 03/03/2016 02:48

Plan for wbd? Yep. Ds is still off. He still is off colour but is getting to get better with the cough starting recede slightly.

I must confess I never did stop procrastinating. And I accidentally had coffee a bit late so that I am up rather late. Just working away on the project I picked up this morning.

Blue that picture was about what it was like here. Nothing has stuck but the wind has been gusting badly on and off. Weird weird weather.

Fizrim · 03/03/2016 09:50

DD came home complaining of toothache last night, so DH rang his dentist and they fitted her in this morning before school with just a few minutes notice. Luckily the appointment was so early that we were not very late to school, and the wobbly tooth is fine (calpol for the pain). A pity she didn't get to see everyone's costumes in the playground (and the teachers) though.

Head still a bit painful from the migraine but so much better today, really need to crack on. With mornings like this one it makes such a difference to have everything ready - no way could we have got out the house in 5 mins otherwise.

fuzzpig · 03/03/2016 17:08

It's official. I'm not going back to my job. Applying for redeployment, if there isn't anything available I'm out altogether. Boo.

Going to continue building my Lego from Christmas now to cheer myself up!

Greymalkin · 03/03/2016 21:36

oh dear Fuzz - has it come as a bolt from the blue? Regardless, an unpleasant situation and it couldn't have been worse timing thinking about your DH's job too Confused Sad You must be so worried

Are you feeling better Fizrim? I've only ever had two migraines and the pain was terrible. I can't imagine how horrid they are for people who have them regularly

SC - has the furry one proffered an olive branch to the rabbits yet?!

Mama - like we always say at the start of each new thread, we follow Flylady in a very relaxed way; pick and chose what works for you. I've found that the system helps with my perfectionism, that even a little progress is better than none at all, 15 minute blasts of housework can be very effective and the zones and daily focus give me a structure to work with. Do stick around, some of the ladies on here have been following this system for ages and will have lots of advice and suggestions

I've had another busy and productive day:
Fed cats and DS
Made beds
Took DS for his haircut and then to soft play
Yet another trip to the post office
Used a 'magic eraser' on so many grubby marks on the walls and the results were fab! Can't believe how good it was at getting crayon and greasy fingerprints off the walls!
Did a happy dance when the cleaner arrived!
Began the rather terrifying task of completely emptying my desk and having a ruthless declutter
Made dinner
Put DS to bed
Cracked open the [homemade] wine Wine. Tis good ;)

Will post links in a tick

TBH I've been preparing myself for it for a while, so it's not a shock - I had already had an occupational health meeting where we agreed that my job just isn't suitable for my condition(s). They recommended moving me to a desk role, so I just have to fill in the form and see if they have anything that's suitable in terms of tasks/location/hours. I'm not really expecting anything to come of it but it's worth a try. If it doesn't work out it'll be the boot. Eek.

Yes, not great timing Confused but all my energy is going into just getting through the next couple of weeks, until DH's notice period is up. We have a few days away (a bargain booked before any of this shit happened) after that, and then although obviously DH is looking hard for work, if he doesn't start a new job straight away then actually I will be very relieved to just get some time together. I feel like our lives have been on hold for the last couple of years TBH, DH doing such ridiculous hours, me being so incapacitated. Number one priority is getting the house sorted while DH is off work. I'm quite excited about that part. We've made great progress lately considering what's going on, but we will be able to achieve a lot more over an intense couple of weeks if we aren't waiting for one (or two if he's lucky) day off a week. Hmm

I'm feeling rather wrung out after today, so I don't expect to be Flying tomorrow!

Shannaratiger · 04/03/2016 07:56

Morning all

Still here and FLYing. Being inspired by You Tube organizing videos, still can't sort my kitchen cupboards right though! Hmm

Fuzzpig sorry about your job situation. Hope you can get redeployed and DH finds a new job soon, preferably with less hours.
SC hope you're taking it easy, although I know that's easier said than done. My back is really hurting when I bend down and my knees when I kneel down! Hmm
Grey thanks for the thread, impressed with the Ta Da list.
Mama welcome

Hi to everyone else.
Back later with lists as need to get ds dressed and reading and homework done.
