Inspired by the wet wiping the stair carpet thread. It got me wondering what other cleaning tips i dont know and i do like to collect them Grin

So what do you do that you think others should know about?

I'm trying to think of any of my own but cant right now. Will add if i do.

I vacuum out the bottom of the oven, and the freezer. Picks up all the crumbs easily, especially the gap between the bottom of the oven and it's door.

I use old toothbrushes for scrubbing the taps, and for cleaning where the glass meets the frame on the windows.

I also have a special mop which I use to wash the kitchen walls with. Not the floor, that has it's own cleaner.

I brought ds2 a pair of clippers with cleaning stuff underneath, so that he would clean the floor whilst walking around. He wouldn't wear them though. Perhaps I sold dig them out and wear them instead!

Sgtmajormummy · 23/06/2015 16:39

Dropped white toothpaste (not gone in your mouth yet!) is good for smearing over chrome taps and washing off by hand. At least it doesn't go to waste...
Another tip is to leave any product on to do its job before you start scrubbing. My bathroom gets 15 minutes' soaking time and the toilets as long as possible.

cleanmachine · 23/06/2015 16:42

I've used the steam mop yo freshen my hair if it's a bit greasy. Read that tip on here years ago and have it a try. Oboe done it the one mind. ... Oh and you have to use the curtain accessory if you want to do this.

cozietoesie · 23/06/2015 16:43

Many years ago, an older acquaintance once said to me that the true test of a good house-keeper was how clean they kept their lampshades and I've been phobic about them ever since. Other parts of the house may be drowning but my lampshades are pristine!

NotBanksy · 23/06/2015 16:54

I put a denture cleaning tablet in mugs/teapots that are stained. Leave to soak (the more stains the longer you leave) and the stains will wipe away with a sponge.Grin

SurlyCue · 23/06/2015 17:39

I dust the Hoover down with a duster before I put it away.

This isnt a cleaning tip as it actually creates work i dont really need to be doing but i always take the hoover head off and hoover the bristles with the narrow attachment after ive done the floors. I just like a nice clean bristle set when i put it away. Grin

I use a squeegee on my bathroom shower screen and tiles after wiping with a cloth and spray. Quick, easy and streak free. I also use same process for my kitchen cupboards (gloss white) and my cooker glass front and mirrors and windows come to think of it! Less elbow grease required with the mirrors and windows as there is no polishing.

judebump · 23/06/2015 18:57

Does anyone know how to get mould off sealant on windows? Just moved to find the windows are full of it and a little scared to use the bleach and bicarb stuff as its spread to the paint and pvc - any tips welcome. Mother in law visiting from Fri so hero status awarded to anyone who can help...

I am so fucked.

YaTalkinToMe · 23/06/2015 19:03

My Mum hovers the garage floor and has a hoover just for this purpose.
Surely no one else does this? Grin

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 23/06/2015 19:12

judebump, the best cleaner for shower silicone grout is supposed to be HG - it's £4-5 in places like Homebase (I may have seen it somewhere cheaper but forget where) - it should be as good on windows

I have tried it in my shower & my mildew seems to be HG resistant. but worth a try!

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 23/06/2015 19:13

"shower silicone grout" was meant to say shower silicone mildew

dontcallmelen · 23/06/2015 19:16

Nanasueathome · 23/06/2015 19:17

I take my loo seat off every few days and soak it in the bath with Ariel overnight
Works a treat

cozietoesie · 23/06/2015 19:18

jude

You don't need to fix it - use it as your 'obvious fault' and ask for her advice. That will sort her for the whole visit. Grin

MegMurry · 23/06/2015 19:19

Blimey - how dirty does your loo seat get?

dontcallmelen · 23/06/2015 19:19

Nanasueathome · 23/06/2015 19:20

The loo seat never gets dirty
I just like to do it

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 23/06/2015 19:21

You need to soak loo roll with that HG stuff and put it on the black mould and leave it over night.

Another one that uses baby oil to polish anything stainless steel, cooker hood, hob, toaster, kettle, light switches......

TheRealNightsWatch · 23/06/2015 19:25

I put the toothpaste tube lids in the dishwasher to clean them. Loser!

dementedma · 23/06/2015 19:27

Oh dear. Cleaning threads o MN make me feel like such a slattern. Hoovering light shades, removing loo seats, washing the hoover......dear God! Are you all the same people who only wear pjs once and wash towels after every use?
I'm impressed and horrified in equal measure.

Carrie5608 · 23/06/2015 19:28

Jude Hydrogen peroxide from the chemist for mould.

For stained toilet seats use a brillo pad.

SurlyCue · 23/06/2015 19:30

Noooooo!! Dont open that can of worms! There'll be all out war. Grin
