Inspired by the wet wiping the stair carpet thread. It got me wondering what other cleaning tips i dont know and i do like to collect them Grin

So what do you do that you think others should know about?

I'm trying to think of any of my own but cant right now. Will add if i do.

I'd like to hoover the cat- genius! And the lint roller on cat flap idea -must tell my dh, I'm sure he could rustle up something like this.

Corygal · 24/06/2015 15:32

I use microfiber car washing gloves (99p shop), damp, to get dust and fur off everything. Including Mr Cory.

Peppapissinpig · 24/06/2015 15:38

How the hell do you manage to get a loo seat off and on regularly? Shock

cozietoesie · 24/06/2015 15:56

If it's a standard UK loo seat, you just unscrew the fitment using the screws underneath the porcelain at the back. Go have a look. Smile

cozietoesie · 24/06/2015 15:57

*retaining screws

Davros · 24/06/2015 16:00

I use Flash Magic Erasers (or equivalent) for lots of things. Not be essayist housework but cleaned Ugg boots and Long Champ bag

cozietoesie · 24/06/2015 16:04

Sorry - I described that badly. There are threaded bolts which go through holes in the porcelain fitment and are held in place by (usually plastic) nuts which are easily manipulated by hand. You just loosen and remove the washers and remove the fitment.

cozietoesie · 24/06/2015 16:06

*remove the nuts and fitment.

Blush

(I think I'll go for a snooze. It looks as if I need it.)

Always but ALWAYS use a fresh clean cloth for cleaning plus fresh clean soapy water, it's no use rubbing dirt around the surfaces with grubby cloths and nasty water.

This seems obvious to me but so many people make things worse by cleaning with a dirty cloth! We took over a cleaning job where the nanny had cleaned before us - she was not a professional cleaner so why on earth they thought she'd be ok at this I have no idea but she'd smeared so much grease around the windows with their own dishcloth it took AGES to remove and get them right again.

Damnautocorrect · 24/06/2015 17:17

Egg cup of white vinegar, toothbrush gets the mould and lime scale off your grout.
Leave to dry then damp cloth wipe.
All else fails cotton wool balls dunked In bleach will stick to the grout/tiles.
My shower screen has stayed immaculate as I clean it with window cleaner.
I live in a really hard water area

Janethegirl · 24/06/2015 17:28

After clearing the worst of the ash from the coal fire, I finish off with the vacuum cleaner. Much easier to get the fine ash with a vac instead of a dustpan and brush Grin

I recently bought a loo seat that you can remove from the top! it's a revolution! pull it off, into the bath, spray with whatever cleaner you prefer, wipe over and shower it off! leave to dry or wipe over with clean, dry cloth and push back onto the prongs!

Baddz · 25/06/2015 19:59

Solo...where from!?

mineofuselessinformation · 25/06/2015 20:04

The alternative to hoovering a patio if it's very dry and dusty is to water it (just enough to damp it) first. The dirt collects into balls as it's swept.

inmyheadimthequeen · 25/06/2015 20:12

Solo our loo seat does that! We got it in Homebase Baddz. Enjoying this thread [saddo]

Baddz · 25/06/2015 20:22

Thank you!

mineofuselessinformation · 25/06/2015 21:49

When dcs were younger, arguments used to break out over using each other's toothbrushes, so I used to but a multipack and let them have new ones as necessary, but every now and then I'd round up the used ones that weren't worn and stick them through the dishwasher and put them back in the packet....

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 25/06/2015 21:57

IKEA also do the loo seat that pulls away from the backing mounting (dead cheap, plus it has nifty screw fittings where you can clip them outwards instead of unscrewing all the way down)

Cleaning the seat is then a doddle but the backing part becomes steadily ranker with orange congealed wee underneath ewwwww Shock

(Only a problem with mis-aiming males of course. Why won't the fuckers just sit down???)

LinkDat · 25/06/2015 23:13

I mop my floor, clean and rinse mop and change water then go over floor again for extra cleanliness. I then wash out mop again and leave in a bucket of bleach solution overnight so I always start the mopping with a clean mop. Overuse of the word mop there totally but I get very excited by my mopping. Mop mop mop.

SurlyCue · 25/06/2015 23:23

Linkdat

If you buy a vileda mop you can remove the heads and wash them in the machine. I mop, remove head, put on new one, mop again then both heads go in the machine.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/06/2015 23:31

Me too, mine go through the machine.

LinkDat · 26/06/2015 07:09

Ooo never thought of that what a good idea!

afreshstartplease · 26/06/2015 07:11

This thread is amazing!

I have to clean soooo much because DH is disabled so I have got it down to an art. I don't clean like other people and quite frankly, I wouldn't advise anyone to! Good god. You'd have to be mad. I designed the entire house to control infection, though, so a lot of the work is done for me by fixtures and systems. But a few things that might translate:

Steam mop = essential! Steam mop all floors (we only have non-porous tiled floors everywhere) twice daily and it's so much quicker than double mopping. I had the light Morphy Richards one but that just died so I replaced it with a Vax, which is a lot heavier but the head is better for getting round furniture legs and you can get coral mops for it so, eh, I like it. The carers moan about this one though, because it is so bloody heavy.

Vac Mop = so useful. I've got one of those dust and vac things -Vax again - and use that three or four times a day to pick up dust. It's better than the hoover because it doesn't kick up any dust and it's really light and the mop heads can be sterilised in the washing machine.

Vienna broom = one of those brooms with big foofy sides that do the skirting boards as well as sweeping. Expensive but worth it IMO to save my back, and they last forever.

You can buy 36 packs of microfibre towels/cloths at Costco for £7.99 and 12 packs of tea towels for a tenner. I have one of those triple basket laundry sorters with the lift out bags, but then inside one I tie two redliners (infection control requirement) and sweep all the cloths and towels into that once a day. Ideally I'd have a cover for that bag but I have never found anything that will work properly - the carers just dump dirty stuff on top of the lid if it's closed, alas.

I put everything in the dishwasher. Everything.

echt · 26/06/2015 08:30

Every day in the kitchen, clean surface wipe cloth, clean sponge/scrubby scourer, new tea towel. On a busy weekend, twice a day.
