52 Weeks To an Organised Home Challenge 2015 - Who fancies it then?

I'm pretty excited! Realised that the reason I can't keep on top of the housework is because I'm so disorganised and so cluttered. This shoud deal with both, and with a week per challenge, allows enough time for it to be habit forming (I hope!).

Theres also a Declutter your home in 15 minutes a day challenge running alongside it, which looks fab!

Starts on Monday - so, who's in?

This sounds good. Back later for a proper read.

AfternoonsandCoffeespoons · 06/01/2015 22:11

Feeling pretty accomplished after today. STILL not caught up with what I missed (really getting stupid now) but mammoth decluttering, all done on very little sleep with major period pain, so pretty proud right now!

Day 7 - Declutter and organise kitchen sink area
www.home-storage-solutions-101.com/sink-organization.html

And don't forget we're still organising kitchen counters all week.

I'm out for a lot of the day tomorrow, so trying to be super organised and get most done before I go out. Hopefully will get a better nights sleep tonight.

Well, I had good intentions for this thread, but haven't done anything so far. :( My mum was rushed to hospital on New Year's Day and I've had little time to do anything since.

I will try to read through and catch up on what I've missed. I have at least put the Christmas stuff away, both at our house and for my parents!

VioletandRoger · 06/01/2015 22:19

Still to reorganise the recipes and oil the kitchen surface. However I have managed to Hoover, scrub and sweep all the floors throughout the house whilst tidying all the way. House is spotless now, although there are still lots of decluttering and DIY jobs to do.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 06/01/2015 22:26

Snapes hope your mother is ok.

I haven't had a chance to start properly yet. I hope to catch up at the weekend.

HazyShadeOfWinter · 06/01/2015 22:33

Snapes sorry about your mum, getting Christmas decs away in two houses is a job enough for anyone, I'd say.

Afternoons the 15 minute thing has to be flexible I guess, I had planned to try and set aside 15-20 minutes for the daily bit and do as much as I can. Some days I might do more, others (when both DC at home) I will likely do nothing. but I can catch up later because, scanning ahead, I can see I won;t be busy on the day we are looking at potholders (own none) or the attic/cellar/garage weeks (we have none of these things). So if I haven;t finished an earlier challenge I can catch up then. That's the theory, anyway.

Hope you sleep better tonight, feeling proud at progress made.

I managed to clear one side of the kitchen, moved a few bits off the counter which I don't use weekly and got rid of a few bits too. Did one of the cutlery drawers -t he one with random, little used things like ice cream scoops. Left the everyday one til tomorrow/potholder day... Have also got three bags out to charity shops since 1 Jan, and finally got to post office to return various bits and bobs I ordered online pre-Christmas and then decided I didn't need/didn't fit etc. So progress made. Asked DH to print off the whole list of challenges so I can tick them off as I go Love a good list to tick :)

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 06/01/2015 22:59

I love a good list to tick off. It's just not the same on a computer screen.

Hamper · 07/01/2015 09:28

Snapes, sorry to hear about your mum, I hope she is ok.

Hamper · 07/01/2015 17:33

Ok sink sides done! And the cure challenge was to go through the larder so did that too. Luckily I did it before I went shopping as there was more in there than I thought!

I'm up to date for the rest of the week! Cleared and cleaned the utensils drawer and although I didn't get rid of loads it looks SO much better. Counters are cleared because I had a blitz before Christmas. I also bought a load of new tea towels in the sales and have relegated the old ones to cleaning cloths to 'swish and swipe' the bathroom.

Just wondering now whether to make a start on other tasks or to have a rest...!

AfternoonsandCoffeespoons · 08/01/2015 21:53

Hello! Did manage yesterdays task despite not posting, cleared away all the empty bottles that seem to breed around the sink, and tidied up the area. Todays task (Clear off kitchen counters) I have been doing all week really so they're looking so good atm.

Day 9 - Clear off kitchen table
www.home-storage-solutions-101.com/declutter-kitchen-table.html

I don't actually have a kitchen table, so will use the time to try and get on top of my ever growing to-do list, and go back over the tasks so far, check anything I've missed!

HazyShadeOfWinter · 08/01/2015 22:10

Well done Pocket!

Was feeling quite smug yesterday as cleared round the sink and also under it, and our counters/table are already pretty clear (cos its all shoved in cupboard) so was ahead of self. Today nothing done as took both DC to visit family, but hopefully tomorrow will start on kitchen towels (The next challenge which I need to do, as own only one 'everyday table cloth')

Qwebec · 08/01/2015 22:42

joined the club!
I love this, small managable challenges, my counter top never looked so amazing.

but where do you find the daily challenges?

Loobylou3 · 08/01/2015 23:03

too sleepy to read now but want to come back tomorrow to join inSmile

birdonaroof · 09/01/2015 17:41

(name change)

Sink area finished today.

I don't have a kitchen table. My dining room table was clear ...... until I put all the things on it that I sorted out to sell!
Have sold a couple of bits today, which is great.

Took two big bags to the charity shop too.

Thanks again OP. I don't think I would keep it up if it wasn't for this thread!

PocketFluff · 09/01/2015 20:53

It's more luck that I'm ahead of myself, helped by the fact that our table is too small to have clutter on it and be used and we only have the one table cloth!

HazyShadeOfWinter · 09/01/2015 21:39

Us too Pocket - one table cloth and a small table means I'm nearly done for the week too. Just got to superglue a broken spoon rest thing as I guess thats the nearest thing to a pot holder that I have, and I've been meaning to fix it for ages. Even though I didn't actually do any decluttering on the counter tops, having started the challenge has made me more aware of keeping them clear through a day as much as I can, which is great as it means the table is free for painting/play do if the toddler asks for it, rather than a panic clear while he gets bored.

Maybe she's deliberately starting us off easy so we don't give up before the end of Jan?!

Snapespotions · 11/01/2015 00:55

Thanks for all of the good wishes about my mum. It hasn't been the easiest couple of weeks but I think we're starting to get back to normal now.

Today, I have been trying to catch up on all of the challenges that I've missed. My counter tops are beautifully clear, and the utensil drawer has been decluttered. I have a binder for the household notebook thing, but not quite sure yet what to put in it or how to use it!

My donation box is almost full, so need to make a trip to the charity shop soon. Also did music magpie with some old CDs and DVDs which has cleared a bit more clutter out of the house.

I haven't looked at tablecloths/place mats yet, but we don't have much so that shouldn't take long. Likewise for tea towels.

Hoping I can keep up with it!!

HazyShadeOfWinter · 11/01/2015 20:51

Glad things are getting back to even keel snapes, well done on catching up!

Qwebec, when you sign up to the weekly emails (link in OP) you get sent a link to PDF with all the daily challenges in. Or I could DM to you (feel a bit bad posting it on here outright as it's her incentive to get subscribers to her mail list).

Kitchen counters clear again no, but they do get pretty bunged up in the day time - it's being busy with kids partly, but also fact that cupboards etc so clogged with stuff. Am thinking that while the kitchen -based challenges are a good way to start year, I also need to do some more drastic stuff. Keep dipping into the Kondo threads and wondering whether I should try that. Might Kondo my shoes tomorrow...

ClockwiseCat · 11/01/2015 23:44

I'm really behind. How realistic would a catch up be at this stage?

Snapespotions · 12/01/2015 00:27

Entirely realistic, I would say. :)

I only started properly yesterday and have pretty much caught up now, though I still need to do some work on the household notebook.

I can see why some might find it a bit too slow, but I quite like the easy pace - I tend to lose motivation if it's too ambitious!

PocketFluff · 12/01/2015 08:10

I think by following this it should be really easy to catch up because of the nature of the tasks. Monday is just a reading day and there are lots of tasks where you won't have to do much or anything at all (there are several days devoted to coupons next month, I think it will take me about 5 minutes to sort through mine!!).

I'm also determined to never think of myself as 'behind' as that is when I know I'll give up or lose interest. Instead I'm thinking of it as ongoing - it doesn't have to be done in a year, and you could repeat it or tack a lost month on to the end.

For me, the important thing is, is to get into the habit of doing something, anything, but doing it in little bits and often, rather than trying to devote whole days to decluttering and tidying and then giving up when I don't get this time to myself or would rather spend my time doing something more fun
