Flying into September - a new term for the Fledglings

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/08/2013 22:14

Welcome to the September Fledgling Flylady Thread.

This thread is for people with CHAOS (can't have anyone over syndrome). We follow Flylady, the website with a mission!

All are welcome on this thread, experienced flyers and newcomers alike.

We try to follow the commandments of Flylady as we run our homes, loosely anyway. In between there's lots of chat and support as we go through our daily lives. We have coffee, cake, and a naughty corner for those who want to chat but CBA with their house some days. However you follow it, this thread is designed to make your life a little easier and more fun.

For those who are new to the system (and those needing a refresher), there are several aspects to the system:

  1. Babysteps. These build a routine. Some are really useful, some are downright odd and some are, quite frankly, there to be ignored. They build a good foundation though.
  1. Decluttering. Flylade is evangelical about clutter. In order to feel good about our homes we need to ditch the clutter. Flylady divides the home into zones, week by week and repeating monthly. As well as babysteps, we have to declutter in the relevant zone. Once that is achieved we move on to...
  1. Missions. Also in the current zone, these are targetted tasks to tackle one particular aspect. One a day, they vary month to month.
  1. Deep Cleaning. Once we have completely decluttered (some of us seem to be stuck permanently on that stage) there are deep cleaning lists for each zone. Achieve that and your house will be spotless!

One last thing - the Flylady website encourages us to subscribe to her emails - one word - DON"T! You will be overwhelmed by them. Instead come to this thread every morning and the relevant links for the day will be there waiting for you except when the thread leader has been on the Wine

A big thank you to Bitchy for last month, and also for doing this Sunday's links as I am off camping.

Tesco came just after 8pm (hurrah!) so I got my early night, but I still managed to sleep through my alarm this morning. My ears are still bunged up from the ear infection and I just didn't hear it. Which meant I wasn't up early enough to go for a run Sad

Anyway, am hoping that my day improves. I'm working this morning, then knuckling down with cleaning the kitchen, rather motivated by the fact that MIL is babysitting while we go to see Kaiser Chiefs tonight. Nothing like an impending MIL visit to focus the mind...

Castlelough · 10/09/2013 08:16

Finally! I'm here!
Jumping back in! Parking my bucket and mop!
Have been DROWNING in chaos, but got things together last night - tackled the laundry mountain, with two hrs of ironing, and the mountain of dinner dishes and pots to reveal a shiny sink!
Feel much happier for it!
Felt I needed to make a start before I could come back and join you lovely ladies Smile.
Bitchy thanks for August (though I spent it in the naughty corner Blush) and WhoKnows thanks for Sept!

Asheth · 10/09/2013 09:08

Morning everyone! Well DS3"s first day at school didn't go well, so didn't get a lot more flying done yesterday. Fingers crossed it all goes better today.

So far - packed lunches made, school run done and washing put on.

Main task for today is to clear out DS3's room in preparation for his new bed which will, hopefully, be arriving today.

PositiveAttitude · 10/09/2013 09:20

Asheth I hope school goes better today. Makes you feel rubbish for the whole day when they aren't happy, doesn't it?

Jemima Kaiser Cheifs?????? Envy Envy Envy I saw them at our local -very large- annual music festival here a few years ago. They were amazing!!!

I have been having problems with internet - think I know how to resolve it now, though. Just flying through now as I am off to collect DD3 and take her for her consultant appointment. She is doing well. 16 weeks now and has just last weekend come out of her size 6 jeans! Hmm
Then onto work for a few hours, so I will tyr and get back here this evening. #
Sorry for the mad dash......

Jesstryinghard · 10/09/2013 09:31

Morning all any

Jesstryinghard · 10/09/2013 09:33

Oops sorry guys !! Morning - anyone for a Brew ??

I feel so groggy ! Second day of coming back from
School run and slobbing !

Someone inject me with some serious caffeine, please !!

BlueEyeshadow · 10/09/2013 09:48

Have done the mission again but need to get on with various bits of admin and work-related stuff...

Hope school goes better today Asheth.

Waves to Castle.

Jesstryinghard · 10/09/2013 09:54

Is it just me or does the mumsnet logo on the coffee mug emoticon look like a cannabis leaf .....

Oh god I need new ways of procrastinaykng

Swanhilda · 10/09/2013 09:56

[puts head in hands] another bad start to day,

no not house, not organisation, not getting kids to school, but

an argument with dh over how best to encourage ds1 to learn Spanish. Dh can speak 3 languages fluently and one extra unfluently so he was complaining that ds1 should learn more vocab. I was suggesting that as ds is musical he may only pick it up by immersion ie: conversations with Spanish people. Cue massive row - I didn't get where I am today without learning vocab.. etc etc Angry Then German Dh just happened to mention that he consistently got D's through school in English (he is absolutely fluent in it, both written and spoken now and has a BA from an English uni in History) and I thought, you have no idea how you learned, but it wasn't in school clearly Hmm

However
done
dropped ds2 at school by car - he is very chirpy and enjoying school so far
ds1 and dd off by bus, all in good spirits

pushmepullyou · 10/09/2013 10:00

Yes it does jess i have often thought so.

I have 2.5 child free hours where I'm not at work. It is over a year since this has happened Shock

Very quick list as I want to get on.

To do
paint stairwell
weed herb bed
Tidy kitchen
Mission

Doesn't look like much but I reckon the stairwell painting will take most of the time!

ToffeeWhirl · 10/09/2013 10:38

Welcome back, Castle. I can see the glow of your shiny sink from here Grin.

Jess - yes it does! And I think you should allow yourself some serious slobbing time. Sounds like you need it.

swan - your DH sounds exhausting! Glad your DC are settling into the new school term ok.

PA - good luck to your DD3 with her appointment today. Envy at her size 6 jeans

Jemima - hope your ears are better soon and that you enjoy the Kaiser Chiefs tonight.

WhoKnows - did you manage to get DD out of bed on time this morning?

Asheth - so sorry DS3's first day at school wasn't good. Crossing my fingers that he finds today easier.

Bitchy - am impressed that your DS decided to face his fear by making himself go into school. That's very brave.

pushme - hope your 2.5 childfree hours go as slowly as possible...

Blue - you have reminded me that we have missions to do. Sometimes I forget what we're here for on this thread and think it's just a nice place to chat Blush.

Had no idea what a 'dremel' was, so had to google it. Am not a DIY-er and am not married to one either.

Anyway, I have a 'ta da' (not too long this time):

Up at 5am (why?!), so started dealing with some paperwork
Heard DS1 get up at 6
Managed to scald head in shower

DH warned me that my hair might fall out . Now I keep checking the back of my head. And it hurts too Sad.
B/fasts
Packed lunch for DS2
Texted friend about arrangement tonight
School run
Listened to children reading at school
Home for b/fast
Called DS1 down for home ed. No reply. Found him fast asleep on his bedroom floor.

To do :
Print out birthday card for DS1's friend
More wading through forms
Lunch
Friend here at 1pm
School run
DS1's friend coming round
Order pizza for the boys (whoohoo - no cooking!)

Will try to fit some housework in there too.

Have a lovely day.

ToffeeWhirl · 10/09/2013 10:45

Friend cancelled Sad. Ah well, now have more time for paperwork. And had forgotten to add home ed to my list (if DS1 ever wakes up Hmm).

BitchytheGreat · 10/09/2013 10:45

I hate to say it but most teachers of teachers of languages will say that even people who can learn languages in school learn better when immersed in the culture and actually it should be the recommended method. Hence why a lot of school do language exchange programms. In Used to anyway. My mother speaks 10 different languages, 6 of which fluently to hold conversation the rest suffuciently to make herself understood. She would be horrified at the ignorance of your dh when it come to language learning!!! Angry on your behalf. my question is he picking this fight as displacement and that is not actually the issue and just one where he know he will get the fight he is looking for? not that the mother does this at all, oh no.

Trying to have a productive day not off to a good start.

ta da
superficial clear out of car
car to garage
make lunch box
remove washing up and laundry from where it has been scattered
Coffee with some friends

Right i have just over two hours to be productive, best get moving then... ready set zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

BitchytheGreat · 10/09/2013 10:50

Toffee we have been facing our fears this summer through activities in a way to build up to getting him to communicate about them more. This includes me having to do stuff that scares me and discuss it with him. Ie This scares me but you really want to do it so you can and I will try. I did and then he got to see me go death white and shake until I recovered. But when we talked about it i did agree it wasn't as bad as i had feared, but didn't mean to say i liked it. fucking hated it actually but he had a blast Also he was just warey of shouty teacher but tbf it was just the settling back into school routine period and I know from experience that after the 1st week the kids are more used to the teacher as long as they are consistant. And knowing the teacher, that will be what they get. My only fear is what he is going to try to talk me into doing next Hmm

ToffeeWhirl · 10/09/2013 11:03

Well, it looks as if your hard work with DS over the summer has paid off, Bitchy. That's fantastic. I have to do similar stuff with DS1 in terms of modelling how to deal with fear. The most embarrassing was on the Isle of Wight (staying at a certain lovely Fledgling's house Grin), when DS1 persuaded me to accompany him on the Collossus Swinging Galleon (see here). We started off with me cuddling him because he was so scared and ended up with me having to stop the ride so I could get off, whilst all the kids and teens laughed at me Blush Blush Blush. DS1 then went on it three more times!

GoingGoingGoth · 10/09/2013 11:28

Bitchy that's brilliant, Toffee you're both braver than me, I hate rides DH isn't keen either luckily DD has no interest yet, but does want to start rock climbing Grin

Am on a baking mission today, bread rising, cakes in oven, planning to do some scones and cheese straws too.

Done
Morning routines
Dd to school
Greengrocers
Laundry hung out
2nd load on
Baking started
Washing up

BBL

Consider sorting the paperwork mountain, but decide to stick it in a box and deal with the general crap today and that another day.
Decide that actually two boxes are needed for this and wonder where there is another spare box.
Decide that it is time to cull some of the shet music i have because actually it is highly unlikely that I will ever use it again.

Write a new training kit list as lost the original

Hmm need a drink, an allergy tablet and to finish ds' passport app so it can get sent off.
Also need to get a shit load of more stuff to be done but right now a break has been earnt.

JemimaMuddledUp · 10/09/2013 13:31

Swanhilda I'm with you, immersion is definitely the easiest way to learn a language. I teach a nursery class through the medium of Welsh. We have lots of children who have no Welsh at home and who are learning it as a second or even third language and they pick it up incredibly quickly simply because everything is done, day in day out, in Welsh.

PA They are playing at our local arts centre in the back of beyond For a small venue they do get some good acts.

Put my washing out before going to work, then it rained. So I have just pulled it all back in again and started tumbling it Angry

Right, need to crack on with the housework.

To Do
Wash dishes
Finish tumble drying washing
Ironing
Put clothes away
Clean kitchen, including wiping cupboard doors and door handles
Sort out swimming kit for DS2's lesson tonight
Wipe round bathroom and toilets
Run hoover round downstairs
Pick DC up from school
Cook dinner for DC (DH and I are going to get something at the concert)

Oh, and I need to decide what to wear tonight.

ToffeeWhirl · 10/09/2013 14:09

Just finished filling out a very, very long form. It has taken me all morning and part of the afternoon. Feeling absolutely washed out now.

Want to go to sleep, but friend needs to come round and use our shower (her heating has broken), then it's the school run, then DS1's friend is coming round for pizza, etc etc. Might need some of Bitchy's strong coffee to get me through the next few hours.

Anyone know of a charity or something that takes old glasses which are in good condition for sending off to be used where glasses would otherwise be impossible to get hold of. A local opticians used to do this but no longer seem to do this tbf they could have stopped years ago, there is quite a collection here

GoingGoingGoth · 10/09/2013 15:25

I think Specsavers may do that Bitchy and possibly Boots

BitchytheGreat · 10/09/2013 16:19

I have found a whole heap of dvds that I have acquired with every intention of getting watched and not having done so. So i guess a film night will need to be planned fairly soon. Not tonight though. I doubt i will be able to sit still long enough to watch anything. But going to make the most of it and continue tackling my bedroom

And i have discovered a complete fail as I appear to have too totally different files containing different aspects of the same thing. God my filing system is going to have to be completely reviewed Hmm
