Calling all hoarders out there......why?

muriel76 · 10/08/2011 17:10

My DH is a bit of a hoarder. Some of his family are the same but particularly his mum, she seems to keep everything. They both like to also display pointless things ie books that will never be/never have been read etc.

Don't get me wrong, it is not a big deal or anything but I do want to understand why. It's hard to understand as my mum is the complete opposite and I am the same. DH and I have agreed to give the house (another!) big clear out and it would help me to hear a hoarder's view!

(Obviously I have talked with him about it many times BTW, I am just looking for other people's more neutral insights)

Thanks for any replies.

Solo, You are doing so well. Sounds like the attic is looking good.

I am moving slowly between bad back and baby due in next month or so. Still keeping on top of general housework.

But I do need to sort out new baby clothes (already down from attic but need washing and ironing again) and stuff for me, to get us though the new born bit. In particular car seat base and playpen are needed this time around, so I need to look at Ebay.

:)

Babieseverywhere · 07/07/2012 15:24

Arghh, I have no bathroom, no walls, floor, bath, shower, no water !

BUT in a few days time I'll have no rotten floorboards (the discovery of which prompted this rapid make over) and nice clean white tiles to look at...yeah. It has to be done fast before the new baby arrives....or I will be crossing my legs until it is finished.

My shed should be erected tomorrow!!!Grin

Babieseverywhere · 10/07/2012 22:47

Did the shed go up alright ?

We have a working toilet ! Loads to do mind.

Solo · 11/07/2012 00:02

Well almost! It started bucketing down as we were getting the roof panels on, so had to put a tarpaulin over it and leave it. Getting there though! budget shed is just that though! A budget shed!! but it's mainly for my craft stuff, not high value, so should be Ok.

Yay! to working toilet :)

My friend plumbed in my replacement (only had it just short of two years!!) electric shower a couple of weeks ago...Oh the relief!! no more boiling kettles for strip washes (problem with tank) or screeching at Ds to wash!!! (13.11 need I say more?! Hmm).

Babieseverywhere · 11/07/2012 20:57

You have had no shower for two years !

I have been without a working shower for five days and I am going insane (and I am lucky enough to be able to drive daily to my mothers to use her shower) no way could I cope long term without one. DH promises me our shower will be back working at the weekend. Hurrah

Solo · 12/07/2012 00:13

Shed is finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now just got to hope for dry weather so I can fill it!

Babieseverywhere · 12/07/2012 17:08

Yeah for shed building.

We have the chickenpox, such bad timing as new baby due very soon too :(

Solo · 12/07/2012 22:46

Bummer Babies! :( hope you are all better soon.

Solo · 17/07/2012 23:06

Started filling up my new shed! got all the huge boxes of fabric out, a tub chair which is going into Dd's space when it's completed and a few other bits and pieces too! I can see floor! and spiders. Amazing though; I knew it was a tip in the dining room, but looking through the patio doors from outside the room, well! Shock
I started going through some boxes of paperwork, which have all kinds of crap in them and I've got rid of some outdated paperwork. I've begun again!!

Babieseverywhere · 18/07/2012 09:18

Yeah, for your work on the dining room. Sounds like it is going well. I really want a tub chair for our new living room, but that will wait for the time being.

Yesterday
I cleared and cleaned as much of the bathroom as I could and took out two bin bags of DIY rubbish out of there ! We have a functioning cleanish bathroom. Well as far as a room with three plaster walls no floor etc can be clean. Hmm

I stacked all the tiles, cutters and other DIY stuff up in one corner and aired room and cleaned the window. All in all, it is bearable room now. DH to continue working on this room on Saturday.

Today
I want to address the hall upstairs and downstairs which has become overflow from the DIY bathroom job. I intend to tidy stack and hoover, probably won't be able to clear it :( If I have the time and my back does not give out, I will address the last overflow from the bathroom into our room. Picture chest of drawers full of soap etc and piles of clean towels and toilet rolls. Again it is more an organise than clear job but will make me feel a little better.

Solo · 19/07/2012 12:27

Babieseverywhere · 02/08/2012 21:29

Plus I was stuck in the hospital for a week, long story...but I'm home now with DD3 a beautiful big 'un weighing in at 9lb 7oz :)

Housework/decluttering will wait until next week :)

TheSoloPelvicFloorGoldMedalist · 03/08/2012 01:05

OOooooOOOOOOoooo!!! ouch!!! and Congratulations to you all Grin. Are you all Ok? what's the story re the hospital stay? and do you we have a name yet?

I got the green Ikea Robin wardrobe cupboard out of the dining room yesterday with Ds's help and put it at the back of the new shed. It will hold lots!!
