Calling all hoarders out there......why?

muriel76 · 10/08/2011 17:10

My DH is a bit of a hoarder. Some of his family are the same but particularly his mum, she seems to keep everything. They both like to also display pointless things ie books that will never be/never have been read etc.

Don't get me wrong, it is not a big deal or anything but I do want to understand why. It's hard to understand as my mum is the complete opposite and I am the same. DH and I have agreed to give the house (another!) big clear out and it would help me to hear a hoarder's view!

(Obviously I have talked with him about it many times BTW, I am just looking for other people's more neutral insights)

Thanks for any replies.

weevil I know! THough they were all on top of wardrobes, but other stuff can go there now.
Whole shopping trolley of books went on Friday (mostly ones my parents had just dumped on me), plus a couple other bags of stuff, so that was great.
Annoyingly though the fish tank we sold on Ebay is still here as buyer's wife threw a wobbly... and it's in the middle of the dining room in the way. Also have picked up first load of baby stuff from my friend.

However MrNC did great yesterday - I helped him throw out 2 recycling bags of papers, mostly insurance docs from the 1990s and details of all the jobs he applied for at the time. Lovely insight into his brain from before I knew him (and I agreed to keep the letter congratulating him on his performance in his first job in 1986 and raising his pay to a whole £2 an hour!)

And scrap merchant took a bunch of old computers from the doorstep, so that's handy.

Solo · 15/11/2011 19:38

Well, I seem to be on a bit of a roll atm :) although, it is so bad that it still looks terrible ~ and the dust!!!! good job none of us are asthmatic...
Bookcase still in the car, but I have got to have that out by the morning as I am taking Mum shopping then.

Nc are they going to let you down with the fish tank? hope not!

weevilswobble · 15/11/2011 19:57

I'm poorly. Sad

weevilswobble · 15/11/2011 20:03

A week of feeling grotty, lost my voice at the w/e, horrible cough and TICKLY hurty throat. The stress of the aborted warehouse move has sent me insane and depleted my immunity.
At last the cunt new landlord has got the plasterers in and i just might have staircase, electrics and doors by the weekend. Weevils having a major wobble! Still office stuff everywhere but the new office and everyones yelling at me to get new stock on the website. 'Yes, i know, but i cant get at the boxes, or the photographic stuff'
Its like a bad dream.
At some point i will sort my hoard........

Solo · 15/11/2011 22:13

You've done so well weevils so stop beating yourself up girrrl! It will get done, you know it will :)

Solo · 15/11/2011 22:16

And I hope you feel well again soon.

By the way! top tip to get shot of germs...Cut the top off an onion and place it into a glass and keep it by your bedside or in the room you are in. Smells, but sucks up all the viruses from the air. Cheap and effective!

weevilswobble · 16/11/2011 08:07

Really Solo? How can that work?

Solo · 16/11/2011 23:42

Dunno, but it does!

MsUrsa · 17/11/2011 20:49

Onion thing: if it works, it's most likely because the stuff in onions that makes your eyes sting is bad for viruses. The onion-stuff reacts with water (hence stinging eyes) and the viruses will be attached to water from your breath/snot/whatever.

Hmm.

Anyway, hi. I'm not a hoarder (fairly emphatically not, it makes me sick and stressed) but I do have a list of Things That Need Doing Round The House, including a bit of decluttering, and you are providing me with motivation. And inspiration. You're awesome, all of you.

In return for this free motivation, I will attempt to provide some in return. Somebody asked 'what's it like when you get there? When it's done?' Well, I'm not done, but regardless, it's kind of like this.

Imagine coming into your house. Keys in the lock, opening the door, hanging up your coat and scarf and whatnot. Now imagine immediately feeling better, much better, because now you're At Home, and home is a lovely, relaxing place to be.

So you think: hmm, best tidy up. Imagine whizzing around and chucking the odd thing back where it goes in less than 10 minutes, and then sitting down to drink steaming hot tea from your favourite mug in your living room, which contains only those things that pertain to living rooms.

And after this lovely cup of tea? Ah! Doorbell. And someone you know and love was just going past and thought they'd say hi. And you can let them in, make them a cup of tea (with your ample supply of clean mugs) and not be in the least bit embarrassed about anything in your house. Not even if you have bras on the radiator, because...well, everyone has laundry.

Imagine no more clutter, and your house being...lovely. Not perfect, because perfection is static and unchanging. But lovely.

...

One bite at a time, and it will get done. And maintenance? SO MUCH EASIER than getting it there. Honest.

And Brew for all. :)

weevilswobble · 17/11/2011 20:58

Yeah! Obviously! I was thinking on a heavier pyschological level!

MsUrsa · 17/11/2011 21:04

Yeah...but I can't really help with that. shrugs Especially as I sometimes think I have self-sabotage down to a fine art.

Me: This food will make me feel horrible.
Me: But it tastes nice!
Me: But...feel horrible...
Me: OM NOM NOM
Me: You idiot.

Blush

Only thing to do for that is watch for it, I guess. Or hide the biscuits, in my case.

Solo · 18/11/2011 00:19

Wow! MsUrsa just wow! I'd forgotten those feelings actually, so thanks for the reminder :)
And if you need some motivation re the food stuff and not eating it when you know it'll make you feel bad, then please join in on the Paul McKenna thread (number 7). We'll sort you out encourage you :)

MsUrsa · 18/11/2011 09:17

[thinks] Who's Paul McKenna?

[Googles]

I thought the name sounded familiar! I'll search up that thread then, thank you!

Anyway. Thankfully not so very, very hungry today. And inspired by you all, I'm going to tackle the utility room. Containing the Cat Box.

Which doesn't contain any actual cats, please note. But our cat died a few weeks ago, and while I chucked away stuff like dirty/bloody/nasty towels, I haven't really looked at the other stuff.

And while it seems a bit ridiculous to weep over flea spray, I just might. Wish me luck. :( I'll feel better when it's done.

MsUrsa · 18/11/2011 11:18

I did it! Hooray! I can actually go into the utility room now! Grin

Brew time!

Solo · 18/11/2011 14:57

Yay! MsU I did type out a long post, but am having troubles with my laptop...so the shortened version is. I know what you mean re the flea spray and tears. And I have been busy today :) The end!

MsUrsa · 18/11/2011 15:21

Yay solo! I'll we'll want to hear all about it when your computer is less grumpy!

Solo · 18/11/2011 17:58

Scrubbed disgusting kitchen sink. In my defence, it is white and a bloody nightmare to keep clean! the draining board was very clean surprisingly though, but it was still scrubbed. Plug holes cleaned (cilit bang and HOT water), cooker top cleaned, but oven will hopefully be done tonight and wiped clean in the morning (that's the plan)...dish washer and washing machine both chemically cleaned and all washing up done either in the dishwasher or by hand...not even made a mark in the mess that is my house! :(
Going to keep going though.

Solo · 18/11/2011 18:00

Saw two pairs of my sandals for sale in the charity shop yesterday, one pair was in the window! ...must find the others and drop them in too.

MsUrsa · 18/11/2011 20:27

Love that! Clearly they really appreciated your donation! (I saw a dress I donated on a mannequin in Oxfam once. I felt quite virtuous).

And hey, your sink and washing machine and bits of oven and (my personal bugbear) dishes are done, which isn't bad either!

DH spotted my pile of his stuff, found in the utility room with nowhere to go...

'Why are you throwing out my stuff dear?'
'I'm not, I'm putting it in the loft because I bought these for you three years ago and you haven't used them once, oh well, my bad'

Solo · 20/11/2011 22:36

Got loads to get on with tomorrow.

I didn't do the oven Blush I hate that job too...but I must do it before Christmas.

I have to kit me and the Dc's out in 80's apparel for a party soon...makes me wish I hadn't been so good at getting rid of stuff 10 years ago now as I had loads of it in size 10, which I certainly am not now.

weevilswobble · 21/11/2011 07:58

Hoarding victory/justification:

DD had to do a collage as part of a ongoing red pepper project in art. Guess who had lots of lovely art resources? Oh yes! I'm waiting the A grade and 3 merit marks that the resting piece will undoubtably receive!

pinkytheshrunkenhead · 21/11/2011 09:33

I am currently clearing my Nanas house as she has had a major stroke and has had to go into a nursing home. The saddest thing about it is that you cannot just chuck things out as I found important things stuffed in with complete crap. Two tiny chests of drawers yielded 3 black bags of charity stuff and 4 black bags if rubbish and two death certificates and some childhood pictures of my Mummy I have never seen before!

She has a four bed house stuffed into a one bed place with the loft stuffed to the top too and I actually think it is going to take me a year to do it (not exaggerating here as have 4 children and expecting another)

I am a clutter person and this has been a very clear lesson in sorting myself out as moving house soon - oh yes another thing which may take up some time.

My nan has electricity bills addressed to a house we moved from 36 years ago!

Horrible horrible horrible

weevilswobble · 21/11/2011 20:52

Oh Lordy Pinky. That sounds like a whole lotta work. How is your Nana doing?

Solo · 21/11/2011 21:36

Weevils Grin

Pinky how sad and awful for both you and your Nana. You have to do it and she has to relinquish control. I too have a 4 bedroomed, 3 reception roomed house crammed into a two bedroomed house; it's so not funny. I hope that you find the time, energy and patience to go through it all.

I didn't get anything done today. My friend wanted to go to Makro and as I have a card and she doesn't...
Tomorrow is out too as I have to collect Mum and take her for a hair cut. Wednesday might be Ok, Thursday is out and Friday not sure. Another less than fruitful week then.

pinkytheshrunkenhead · 23/11/2011 19:04

My nana went into a nursing home today Sad - she is not great and I haven't been able to take her stuff in because I have the flu, so sadly she has to be without her personal things until I am a bit better. Fortunately her annexe is on my step dads house and I have no time constraint (within reason i guess) to sort it out - God knows what would happen if this were a rental or something.

I do feel I owe it to her to sort through everything sensitively and properly. Honestly it is the last thing I can do for her as she has been very resistant to any help and would hate the idea of anyone else rifling through her belongings.

Being able to donate so much to charity makes it all a bit better - for instance in the lost there are probably 4 or 5 duvets still all new in packets which are going to a homeless charity along with new bedding in packets. If I can find the time I might Ebay some 'vintage' stuff for her and then she can have a bit in the bank (not that there is any point in this) or maybe I can send her nice flowers for her room each week? Not a lot one can do for someone in her situation Sad

But pregnant with two toddlers and two older makes it time wise very hard but there it is - she would have done anything for me during her lifetime and I need to do this for her.
