It's August - can the Fledglings keep FLYing with children underfoot?!

BlueEyeshadow · 29/07/2011 14:32

Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome to August's edition of the Fledgling Flyers,
Meine Damen, Mesdames, Ladies! (although any Herren, Messieurs and Gentlemen would be very welcome too, I'm sure, and apologies for the show tunes now lodged in everyone's heads ...)

If you're trying to keep out of CHAOS over the summer holidays, with the dear children creating havoc all around, then pull up a chair, roll up your sleeves and join in the fun.

Fly Lady's website is here, but we don't recommend signing up for the emails unless you want an ironically cluttered inbox. I'll post the links to the information for every day this month and try to keep up with all the chat.

There are babysteps to get you started on forming a routine, and missions to do once each room is decluttered and, as the Fat Fairy says, it's amazing what you can do in fifteen minutes. We'll be starting August in the entrance, front porch and dining room, and sifting the sense from the cutesy language. :)

I notice from the archive that it's the thread's second birthday so I'm sure there'll be cake as well as plenty of Brew, Biscuit and Wine - virtual, so no calories - along the way. Finally, a big thank you to CHB and Swan for leading us heroically through a hectic July! Grin

Morning everyone, feetheart shuffles in late as usual :)

Am posting from my Mum's where DC and I have been since last Weds. DH as been left at home with the cats and I am dreading what will greet us as we step through the door late tonight - be warned, there may be a lot of ranting tomorrow Hmm

Will attempt to catch up and then join in.
I have been reading 'Time Management for Manic Mums' (an excellent 50p charity shop investment) whilst I've been away and I HAVE PLANS!! DH may not know what has hit him and I may need to use a lot of my long forgotten psychology degree on all the family but I really want to change things. Wish me luck.

Right, need to round up DC and get them dressed so better set a good example :)

Feet - give us a clue to your plans! I'm intrigued now.

Ihatecobwebs - how is the new job going?

Have just finished catching up with emails. Am disobeying Flylady's dictum and I am still not dressed Shock. About to tackle the washing and the kitchen.

I have return from a successful coat cupboard tidy, I finished dusting the spare room for grandparents visit, two loads of washing done and third load on now. Shame it's pissing down with rain so the house now looks like a laundry Angry Coffee time now while DS naps Grin

Qwepoi - we've still got boxes of junk from when we moved into our first house - 10 years ago!
When we moved to this house, it was easier to just move the boxes and say "we'll sort it out when we get there" - they're still in the eaves! Blush
Hoping that once I'm flying properly, I can get through them too.
Isn't it nice to feel organised and not worry about guests coming?! Smile

toffee the Cozi calendar is OK. The zone list is a bit daunting, and i think that's what put me off! I get a weekly reminder of what I'm doing during the week. Thats good, and I have filled in the month, so I'll get reminders for that. There's such a lot to the Cozi thing, it can get quite time consuming though to fill in!

How is it lunchtime already? I feel like i am losing control of the day already. So much to do so little time.

This list is the same as yesterday with the exception of the banking and shopping that i managed to get done.

Hellllloooooo!!

Still haven't had a proper chunk of time in which to catch up on thread but hope everyone is OK.

Having a "creative" day here. Painting a "thank you" card for my sister and baking cakes and sewing her an apron as token of appreciation for all her help when visitors were here. Dh will post whatever I have finished in UK tomorrow on his travels.

The only Flying I am doing is trying to keep everything fairly tidy and am taking advantage of bright sunshine to tackle humungous washing pile. Loads and loads of post-visitor bed linen....

DD and I are wafting around in pyjama-like clothing and flip-flops and it is all very relaxing. We may not even leave the house today except to nip to supermarket and back.

I love the school holidays !!!!!!

A warm welcome to qwepoi!

And welcome back to noeyedear!

Dedalus I have horse Envy We are city-based and so have to make do with weekly trips to local riding establishment. Extensive woods available for rides though thankfully.

Nice to see Nicknacks Feetheart OM and huge waves to everyone else!!

Thanks for links and round-up Blue!!

Happy holidays Whoknows !! IOW IS popular this year ....!!

yOU can do it CHB!

Sorry to slope off without any more personals but must get as much ready to post tomorrow as poss. Waves back frantically to Toffee!!

Sort kitchen done
Washing doing
Declutter our bedroom still to do

We are all dressed - at last. Lunch is cooking and the DC have ice lollies for pudding, so they are happy. Plus I am letting them watch telly (lots of benign neglect this morning).

I have swished and swiped in the bathroom. New list for after lunch:

Wash up
Book carpet cleaner for sitting room (would like whole house done, but too costly)
Ring bank
Ring MIL
Declutter bedroom
Wrap present
Party
Tesco delivery later
Evening routine, etc.

Fuzzled - glad you emerged safely from the coat mountain.

Noeyedear - hmm, I was a bit worried that the Cozi calendar would just be another chore to do, rather than a help. Sounds a bit like it was that way for you. On the other hand, I do love compiling lists and feeling organised. Plus, DH might actually look at an online calendar, whereas he never remembers to look at our written calendar, so we end up double booking.

Anyone else used the Cozi calendar yet?

CHB - will be joining you in a 15-minute burst of decluttering activity in the bedroom after lunch (er, my bedroom, I mean - am not helping you with yours, I'm afraid Wink).

Dedalus - glad the morning with four Shock little ones went well, apart from the cut lip. When I was a childminder, I was always far more worried about other people's children hurting themselves than my own! I just wanted to return them unscathed. I found it very nerve-wracking! Whereas I was relaxed and used to my own children.

Lunchtime now...

Declutterin question: If i get rid of ds' height chart am i going to regret it?

Report
DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 02/08/2011 13:57

Does it take up a lit of space? Can it easily be stored? I would keep it, but seriously, no one wants to take decluttering advice from me!

I have just done about 20mins in the bedroom sorting the bookcase and various other 'hotspots' in an attempt to get ready for decorating.

Now sat in the garden, it is nice but a bit too hot

Report
CHBitchy · 02/08/2011 14:09

Its floating about on the floor in too halves again, getting mangled. tbh i don't think i am that fussed about keeping it. His red book has all his heights in it and I don't bother measuring him regularly. Its not like the marks on the door frame thing the folks did for us when we were little.

Wash up done
Book carpet cleaner for sitting room (would like whole house done, but too costly) done
Ring bank no, but did ring tax office, which wasted at least 15 minutes that I could have used decluttering
Ring MIL feeling guilty about this now, but don't have time till later
Declutter bedroom no, no, no
Wrap present done
Party
Tesco delivery later
Evening routine, etc.

CHB- I might keep the height chart if it's not taking up much room. Saying that, I'm sure I've thrown away my DC's height charts. I mark DS2 on his bedroom wall now. Will never be able to paint over it.

Off to kids' party now.

evening all
V tired so apologise in advance for lack of individuals Blush

toffee I have just started using the cozi calendar. I like a number of things about it : like that I can add everyones stuff to it and that it is colour coded so I can easily see who needs to be where when, like that I can have my "to Do" list on screen along with snap shot of calendar, like that I can add grocery list as I go along. Especially like the way I now have it set up so that it will email me AND DH every Sunday Evening with full weeks events!! DH likes he has found some way to sort of link it with his work Outlook calendar so may actually use it!Also like that it is internet based so that I can view it on oc at work too.
On the downside when I tried adding the FLYlady zone lists to it it was just swamped and way too much info to make it useful so I took that off it. Also the screen view isnt great due to the adds you dont get to see a whole week at a time without scrolling down (minor detail but it annpys me!)
Once registered I have found it quite easy to add stuff to and not too time consuming. I'm going to stick with it for a bit as so far it is proving useful!

swan glad your back safe and sound. Post holiday mess is a pain though...(especially when combined with pre-holiday mess!)

welcome all newbies!!

dedalus choc peanut butter fairy cake sounds yummy!

chb like your un-intentional achievement of the day!

well, my day looked good first thing this morning, fairly clear diary, nice quiet day at work...but as usual turned out manic! Lots of unexpected stuff at work - as is often the way!survived though! was a bit late home...but did manage to go for a run. had planned a slightly new route involving paths through the woods but got a wee bit lost so ended up running round the woods for slightly longer than planned and came out of wrong end of woods meaning an extra mile home! Was shattered by the end of it but it was good for me.

Need to try and get early night as I seem to be permenantly absolutely exhausted...Hmm

dont even know what I need to do tomorrow...will now go consult my cozi calendar to find out LOL Grin

Hello! It's been another busy day here and I still have laundry to sort before the morning. Sigh. Still, DS2 has been to the park, yet again, and this time we had a picnic with friends. I've also managed a civilised, grown up conversation with my babysitting friend while he was asleep and half an afternoon's work, plus getting downstairs acceptable for the ILs bringing DS1 home again tomorrow.

So, what's everyone else been up to?

noeyedear rejoined the thread and sparked discussion of cozi calendars. I'm not sure if I should say "welcome" if you were here before me, but welcome back!
silken popped in for pre holiday tidying.
Fuzzled braved the coat cupboard and, happily, re-emerged.
DDPW was swapping children and offered yummy cakes.
mm still has a shiny sink.
Toffee had a birthday party to go to and major infrastructure construction works to admire (repeatedly).
qwepoi was seeking advice on decluttering her DH before moving.
feetheart has PLANS! [intrigued]
cobwebs had a busy day ahead.
CHB was battling against time but went to Ikea and posted a very motivational list.
SC had a creative day.
swan is back at home and missing the holiday cottage.
pink is flying while pregnant and has done lots of errands.
OM got lost in the woods but didn?t meet a big bad wolf?
Lady has decorators in so is allowed time off flying!

Here are tomorrow's links:
Babystep: Keep up the good work and stay away from the Big Tent!
Mission (when it updates): dining room walls and windows.

My own to do list for tomorrow: Keep the house vaguely presentable for MIL, welcome back DS1, make sure DS2 still gets some attention!

Thanks for the welcomes back! how are we doing this now? Do we write our to do lists on here and then say what we've achieved? Sorry, I haven't had time to read the whole thread ( even though it's not that long) Blush. I updated my Cozi calendar for the month. Forgot to say there are a few recipes on the Cozi website that are quite nice. A bit americanish, but adaptable. It is OK actually, but like overflowingmum my biggest mistake was downloading the Zone lists- They really are daunting, even with the irrelevant stuff taken out ( childrens bathroom, parents bathroom, walk in closet, swimming pool etc!)

my mumsnet layout has turned very strange...all miniature in bits, so you will have to excuse me if I don't notice very obvious spelling grammar mistakes.

I had to keep remembering that there is no reason why today should not be a holiday as good as any other...ahem...London is after all a interesting place. Also reminded by fact that many of you live near inviting forests/beaches that holiday is a state of mind rather than a place itself...

HOWEVER, that said, I have not had a restful day.
managed to stay patient with children till about 2pm when I dissolved into resentful tears and then again I lost it on the way to Swimming pool (why do I end up taking children swimming at 6pm? must be desperation?) due to incessant windup of ds2 by ds1, lack of help with any aspect of tidying up and worst of all, THEY DON@T LET ME USE MY OWN COMPUTER Grin House very messy, DH suffering aftermath of using his holiday allowance without actually as he put it, "having a holiday", and tomorrow we have to spend whole morning at CAMHS. Also he has cut down the hedge, and not had time to clear up any of the branches which are littering front path! I wish someone would take children away for a whole day or alternatively give them a magic draught to make them be nice to each other, and then I could get house into order for the "holidays".

On plus side I have swum ten lengths,
almost finished cleaning/tidying kitchen
taken children for swim (not ds1 of course, he had to play on computer at poolside)
swept one lot of floors
dealt with newspaper clearout
cooked supper
two friend phone calls
one email
two loads of washing
tidied dd's room
intervened to promote happiness and harmony for most of the day...

Feet pointless to brood, just give two essential tasks for him to do(change sheets?, bin out? cut hedge?), and expect no miracles. The house is always scuzzy with DH left behind, I have never known hiim to succeed to wiping a single worktop, or sweep any floors, however he is good at washing and bedmaking...

Feet actually I'm lying, I felt v.resentful when walked in the door yesterday, despite all his kind help over accident, leaving work at short notice, losing his weekend etc; all I thought was, FGS man, why can't you clear the * newspapers out of the hall, or do the washing up before you leave??? Luckily I didn't say it, as he told me what an effort he had made to tidy up Shock

SC I am trying the pjs and flipflops day on Thursday. May have to combine it with pressups though for those fidgety dcs!

Car to garage, sort out the lounge which appears to look like a bomb has gone off in it but no idea how as i haven't been in there. Tackle the kitchen and I still have tons to do in my room before even getting around to tackling the long list of projects that are over due. And as that list is rather depressing and i suspect that burnout is likely something that i shall be fighting tomo.

Good night all, hope you are all sleeping well and that tomo brings you productive days!
